T320 Quick Start Description
This Quick Start contains information you need to install and configure the router quickly.
For complete installation instructions, see the T320 Core Router Hardware Guide at
http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/hardware/.
WARNING: This Quick Start contains a summary of safety warnings in “Safety
Warnings” on page 27. For a complete list of warnings for this router, including
translations, see the T320 Core Router Hardware Guide at
http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/hardware/.
The router is shipped in a wooden crate. A wooden pallet forms the base of the crate.
The router chassis is bolted to this pallet. The shipping crate contains:
•One accessory box (the box to which this Quick Start is taped)
•One Juniper Networks router
•One Quick Start (this document)

Step 1: Prepare the Site for T320 Installation
Before installing the router, make sure that the site meets power, environmental, and
clearance requirements for the router. See the site preparation guidelines in the T320
Core Router Hardware Guide.

Rack-Mounting Requirements
•You can install the router in a four-post rack or cabinet, or an open-frame rack.
•The rack rails must be spaced widely enough to accommodate the router chassis's
external dimensions: 25.13 in. (63.82 cm) high, 31 in. (78.7 cm) deep, and 17.4 in. (44.2
cm) wide. The front-mounting flanges and center-mounting brackets extend the width
to fit into standard 19-in. (48.3 cm) racks.
•The rack must be strong enough to support the weight of the fully configured router.
Each router can weigh up to 369.9 lb (167.8 kg) if fully configured. Up to three routers
can be installed into one standard (44-U) rack that can handle their combined weight,
which can be greater than 1100 lb (499 kg).
•For service personnel to remove and install hardware components, there must be
adequate space at the front and back of the router. Allow at least 24 in. (61.0 cm) both
in front of and behind the router. NEBS GR-63 recommends at least 30 in. in front of
the router.
•The rack or cabinet must have an adequate supply of cooling air.
•In a closed cabinet, there must be a minimum of 6 in. (15.2 cm) of unobstructed airflow
behind the router, or airflow baffles must be installed to prevent recirculation of hot
air and overheating.
•If the router is the only unit in the rack, mount it at the bottom of the rack.
•When mounting the router in a partially filled rack, load the rack from the bottom to
the top with the heaviest component at the bottom of the rack.

Step 2: Install the Mounting Hardware
To install the mounting hardware, perform the appropriate procedure for your rack or
cabinet type:
•Install the Mounting Hardware in a Four-Post Rack or Cabinet on page 7
•Install the Mounting Hardware in an Open-Frame Rack on page 9
Install the Mounting Hardware in a Four-Post Rack or Cabinet
To install the mounting hardware for a four-post rack or cabinet:
•Install cage nuts, if needed.
•Install the large mounting shelf and the spacer bars on the front rack rail.
•Install the small mounting shelf on the rear rack rail.
•Remove the center-mounting brackets from the chassis.

Install Cage Nuts, if Needed
For racks without threaded holes, you must install cage nuts in the mounting holes
specified in Table 1 on page 8:
1. On each front rack rail, install cage nuts for the large shelf and spacer bars.
2. On each rear rack rail, install a cage nut for the small shelf.
Install the Large Mounting Shelf and Spacer Bars
The large shelf and spacer bars install on the front rail. See Figure 2 on page 7.
1. On the front side of each front rail, partially insert a mounting screw in the lowest
mounting hole location specified in Table 1 on page 8 for the large shelf.
2. Install the large shelf on the front side of each front rail. Rest the bottom slot of each
flange on one of the mounting screws.
3. Tighten all the screws completely.
4. Remove the screws that fasten the spacer bars to the back of the front-mounting
flanges on the chassis.

5. Place one spacer bar over a flange of the large shelf. Position the notch in the rear of
the spacer bar so the upper part of the bar is flush with the rack rail and the lower part
is flush with the flange of the shelf.
6. Secure the spacer bar by inserting a mounting screw through the nonthreaded holes
in the recesses of the spacer bar into the threaded hole on the rack.
7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 for the other spacer bar.
8. Tighten all the screws completely.
Install the Small Mounting Shelf
The small shelf installs on the back of the rear rails, extending toward the center of the
rack. See Figure 2 on page 7.
1. On the back side of each rear rail, partially insert a mounting screw in the highest
mounting hole specified for the small shelf in Table 1 on page 8.
2. Install the small shelf on the back of each rear rail. Align the lower of the two slots in
the flange of the small shelf with the partially installed mounting screw. The bottom
of the small shelf must align with the bottom of the large shelf.
3. Partially insert screws into the open holes in the flanges of the small shelf.
4. Tighten all the screws completely.
Remove the Center-Mounting Brackets
The router is shipped with a spacer bar attached to the back of each front-mounting
flange, and two center-mounting brackets attached to the chassis. Remove the
center-mounting brackets from the chassis by loosening the screws at the top and bottom
of each bracket.
Install the Mounting Hardware in an Open-Frame Rack
For open-frame racks, you install the large mounting shelf:
•Front-mount: Attach the large mounting shelf and the spacer bars to the back of the
rails. Remove the center-mounting brackets from the chassis.
•Center-mount: Attach the large mounting shelf to the back of the rails (See
Figure 3 on page 10). You do not have to remove the spacer bars from the
front-mounting flanges.
The small mounting shelf is not needed for open-frame racks. Table 2 on page 10 specifies
the holes in which you insert mounting screws, and cage nuts if needed.
