A 1.1 Meaning of the pictograms
Situation which can lead to danger,
damage to material or operating
faults if the information is ignored.
Important information for operators
and technicians.
A 1.2 Important information
The Operating Instructions should be
read by the user before putting the
unit into operation for the first time, in
order to avoid incorrect operation and other
damage.
If other language versions are required,
please request these from KaVo.
The following operating mode represents
the ma imum allowable load of the motor
(full load at ma imum speed):
30 seconds operating time
9 minutes pause time
Realistic in practice are impulse-loads over
seconds and pause-times over minutes.
The ma imum possible motor-current is
normally not reached. This is in accordance
with the common way of dental treatment.
Duplication and distribution of the
operating instructions require prior consent
from KaVo.
All technical data, information and
properties of the unit described in these
Operating and Assembly Instructions are
correct at the time of going to press.
Modifications and improvements to the
product on the basis of new technical
developments are possible.
This does not imply any entitlement to
upgrading of e isting units.
KaVo assumes no responsibility for
damage arising through
• e ternal effects (poor quality of the
services or improper installation)
• use of incorrect information
• improper use of the unit
• unauthorised performed repairs.
Maintenance and service are performed by
KaVo.

The following are authorized to repair and
service the KaVo ELECTROtorque:
• the engineers of KaVo agents through-
out the world
• the engineers of authorised KaVo dealers
who have been specially trained by KaVo
• independent engineers specially trained
by KaVo.
The approvals will be null and void if
modifications are carried out by third
parties. Use only original spare parts for
operating or repairing the ELECTROtorque
unit.
Disposal of wastes and residues of the
unit and of the accessories at the end of
the service life.
The resulting wastes must be recycled or
disposed of in a manner which presents no
danger to people and the environment, and
the valid national regulations must be
complied with.
In the event of inquiries, please contact
your nearest KaVo agent.

A 1.3 Safety measures
Each time before using a unit, the user must
ascertain that it is operating safely and is in
the proper condition.Check that set values
are correct for use.
The unit must not be further operated
if any functional parts are damaged.
In accordance with these requirements, it is
the duty of the user
• to use only flawless materials
• to observe the correct applications
• to protect the patient, and others, from
e posure to injury
• to avoid contamination by the product.
• to working not with demaged functional
parts.

• designed to be used for medical purposes
only – any form of misuse can be
danger- ous and is not allowed.
• a medical product in accordance with
applicable national legal requirements.
• not approved for operation in areas where
there is a risk of e plosion.
• desinged to be used in lurgeries only
■ Each time before switching on, check the
set speed.
■ Observe the permissible ma imum speed
and ma imum pressure of the tools
(according to tool manufacturer's
instructions).
Safety information
Interference with electromagnetic units
by radio telephones
To ensure safe operation of electromagnetic
units, it is advisable to prohibit the
operation of mobile radio telephones in the
area of the practice or clinic.
In the presence of e treme interfering
high-frequency fields, speed varia-
tions up to ma . 20% may occur.

Cardiac pacemakers
When treating patients with implanted
cardiac pacemakers, it must be borne in
mind that the pacemaker function may be
influenced; see the communications which
appear from time to time in the technical
journals.
As a rule, the patient wearing a cardiac
pacemaker must state at the beginning of
every treatment that he is wearing an
electrical heart stimulator. Presentation of
the pass identifying the cardiac pacemaker
enables the well informed dentist to
estimate the possible effect of his technical
equipment. Today, it should be obligatory,
especially in the case of elderly patients,
also to inquire about the implantation of a
cardiac pacemaker, in addition to questions
concerning previous diseases, tendency to
haemorrhage, etc., when recording the case
history.

accordance with the prescribed purpose and
must be fulfilled.

A 1.4 Purpose and potential
applications
The ELECTROtorque 4890 is a dental
treatment unit for operation of a dental
electrically operated or air-operated drive
for straight and contra-angle dental
handpieces.
A 1.5 Cleaning and care of the unit
The wide range of medicaments and
chemicals used in the dental practice may
damage painted surfaces and plastics.
Investigations have shown that complete
protection of surfaces against all materials
available on the market is not possible.
Since damage to the surface from these
materials is very dependent on the time of
action, it is essential to clean the affected
areas immediately with a moist cloth.
Any residues of disinfectants can be
removed to a limited e tent from painted
surfaces and plastic surfaces by means of
neutral, nonabrasive detergents and
cleaning agents.
In the case of new painted surfaces on
which water still forms droplets, cleaning
with water and nonabrasive, mild cleaning
agents is sufficient.
Paints subjected to stress, detectable from
declining gloss and dark and indefinite
colours, are first cleaned as described
above and are preserved with commercial
paint care agents.
Apply paint care agents with a fluff-free
cloth and circular movements. Then polish
with a cotton wool pad or a cloth until the
surface shines. Damage to the paint may
occur if other cleaning agents are used.
During cleaning/disinfection, ensure
that no liquid enters the interior of
the unit since this may lead to faults.
In general, use only disinfectants which are
approved for use on painted surfaces and
plastic surfaces in dental medicine.

A 1.6 Disinfecting the unit
In general, use only disinfectants
which are approved for use on
painted surfaces and plastic surfaces in
dental medicine.
Use of alcoholic disinfectants
An important requirement is that the
disinfectants be used in accordance
with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Disinfectants are available on the market in
various concentrations.
As a guideline for the use of disinfectants,
the ingredients present in the preparations
tested and found to be satisfactory are
indicated below:

Choose the place of installation of the
ELECTROtorque 4890 so that the
connection between ELECTROtorque 4890
and the unit connection can be made with
the previously used turbine or pneumatic
motor tube 2.

A 5.1 Installation

ocation at the dentist unit:
Place the ELECTROtorque 4890 in the
intended location (see also A 4.1).
Remove previously used turbine or
pneumatic motor from tube and connect
turbine tube or pneumatic motor tube
connection 4to four-hole connector 3at
the back of the ELECTROtorque 4890.
ocation at transformer:
Connect the ELECTROtorque 4890 to the
intended transformer 5via screw
connection 2.
Factory settings for the transformer is
230 V.

By removing the fuse holder 7
out of the letting modul 8,the bridge 6
can be removed.
Replace the bridge that way, that the
relected voltage (115 or 230 V) can be
read.
Finally please replase the fuse holder 7
into the setting modul 8.

A 5.3 Connection requirements
• The compremend air coming from the
dental unit into ELECTROtorque unit
need to be dry, clean and oil-free.
• If necessary please use air-filter, water
reparator or air-dryer.
• To avoid demages at the motor and the
handpiece it’s important to observe the
air requirements.
Air requirements:
Dry, free from contamination and oil.
If necessary
• Use a compressor with a dry air system.
• Install an air filter if necessary (50 µm).
• Blow out the lines before installation.
• cooling air pressure : 2,5 - 4,5 bar
• spray air pressure: 1,0 - 2,5 bar
• spray water pressure: 0,8 - 2,0 bar
• Air flow for the handpiece, coming out
from e- type connection, must be
between 6 - 10 NL/min.
this can easly be proofed with the KaVo
flow meter 10.411.4441 or 1.001.9932.
Please push the flow meter upright on
the motor and start the motor by pressing
the foot control. Check the upper edge of
the ball 2.

A 6 Preparation for commissioning
A 6.1 Calibration of the foot control
At commissioning or when changing the
compressed air conditions, the foot control
5must be calibrated (with the motor
stationary).
Call up the “Calibration“ subroutine by
pressing the keys 1↑and 2↓
simultaneously. The display 3shows
“DO“ (down = lower pressure value).
The foot control may not be pressed
(pressure = zero). After about 1 second,
the value “No pressure“ is detected and the
display changes to “UP“ (up = upper
pressure value).
Now press the foot control pedal fully
(ma . pressure) and press the key 1↑for
recording. The display changes to a
flashing “UP“. The factory setting for the
ma imum pressure is 3 bar.
After the foot control 5has been
released, the calibration is completed by
pressing for a long time on key 4
REVERSE, and the values are saved.
If more than 10 seconds are required for
calibration of the ma imum pressure
(display “UP“), the display 3shows the
error message F2 and the input values are
not saved. In this case, the ELECTROtor-
que 4890 should be switched off for about
5 seconds and the calibration repeated.

A 6.3 Setting the lamp voltage
The lamp voltage can be changed in the
range from 3.0 V to 3.8 V (measured at the
housing plug) with the motor switched off.
The voltage at the lamp itself is 500 mV
below the set value.
The factory setting on delivery is 3.2 V
(about 2.7 V at the lamp).
Call up the “Lamp voltage setting“
subroutine by pressing the keys 4
REVERSE and 1↑together. The display
3shows the value last saved (in volt).
This value last saved can be changed
continuously between 3.0 V and 3.8 V by
pressing the keys 1↑and 2↓.
The setting is completed by pressing key
4REVERSE for a long time, and the
setting is saved.
There is an automatic switch-off for the
light after 2 seconds.
