FOCUS 1
1Introduction
1.1 FOCUS™ Intraoral X-ray
FOCUS™ (hereafter called “the unit”) is a
microprocessor controlled intraoral X-ray unit with
a HF DC generator, which produces high quality
dental images with film or digital sensors.
This manual covers the installation of the FOCUS
intraoral X-ray unit. For information about how to
use the unit, please refer to the User Manual.
Device Installation Manual and User Manual are
shipped with each unit.
These manuals and future updates will be available
upon request from the manufacturer.
It is strongly recommended that you read and
understand both unit manuals before the
installation.
1.2 Intended use
The unit is intended to be used for producing
diagnostic X-ray radiographs of dentition, jaws
and other oral structures.
CAUTION! USA only: Federal law restricts this
device to sale by or on the order of a dentist or
other qualified professional.

3.1 Pre-installation checklist
Radiation protection:
Follow all local regulations for radiation shielding of
the X-ray room.
During the exposure the operator must follow
applicable radiation shielding requirements and
stay at least 7 feet (2 meters) from the radiation
source.
Mounting requirements:
The wall and mounting hardware must sustain a
pull of 350 lbs./1500N, from each wall bracket bolt.
When replacing an old X-ray unit using a wide wall
mount plate, observe the space that is covered by
the wall mount plate to minimize painting where
applicable.
Mounting on a treatment unit is allowed only when
the manufacturer of the treatment unit has tested
the mechanical stability and allow the integration.
For KaVo treatment unit integration refer the
compatibility table of the accessories available.
For OpenMount installation, the mounting shall
contain a bearing designed for a shaft of diameter
of 32 mm (h7) and a length of 105 mm when
mounting on a 3rd party adapter, to ensure that
the maximum load ratings of the adapter are not
exceeded by the FOCUS OpenMount unit. The
installation must provide tilt adjustment to level
and balance the arm. The installation must not
allow rotating the X-ray unit more than 360
degrees to prevent twisting of the cables.
Electrical requirements:
Mains voltage:
Verify the mains voltage (3 wire: single-phase, 115
V or 230 V with protective ground).

Verify that the unit power is supplied through a
circuit breaker with current rating of max. 16 A
slow blow.
NOTICE! Some countries and/or localities may
have regulations on fault current protection. Such
regulations must be observed.
Protective ground: Verify the protective ground.
Grounding resistance should be measured from the
screws in cone fixing element on the tube head
side.
Reach and coverage:
Refer to section 6 Dimensions for reach and
mechanical dimensions. The reach of the system is
measured from the tip of the cone with the arm
fully extended and the cone pointing back towards
the pivot of the wall plate. This measurement
method accommodates the normal positioning of
the Tube head to the patient.
This product is available with three different
horizontal arm lengths. This allows the system to
have three different areas of reach. Do not select a
longer arm than what is needed for the required
reach.
“Short” horizontal arm allows a reach of 176 cm
“Medium” horizontal arm allows a reach of 191
cm
“Long” horizontal arm allows a reach of 216 cm

NOTICE! The reaches listed are with the 9-inch
(229 mm) cone. Using the optional 12-inch (305
mm) cone will reduce the arm reach by 3 inches
(76 mm).
3.2 Tools and hardware
NOTICE! All screws, bolts, nuts and washers used
in the unit are in metric sizes.
The following tools are required during the
installation:

Mounting hardware for wall bracket
Pencil or drawing ink
Spirit Level

Tape measure
Make sure that you have all tools and items needed
prior to installation.
NOTICE! This unit is intended for fixed installation
only, therefore mobile installation is prohibited.

4.2 Installing the mounting device
The FOCUS™ mounting system comprises a
mounting bracket with an adjustment part that
mounts to the applicable mounting device with four
(4) bolts.
There are several supported mounting devices for
FOCUS installation:
a single stud wall mounting plate (narrow)
a 16 inch center stud wall mounting plate
(wide).

4.2.1 Narrow wall mount plate
Prior to mounting of the unit, locate the supporting
material of the wall or a mounting surface and
choose the mounting system according to the
following examples. Mount the unit so that the
lower edge of the mounting plate is approximately
47 inches (1100 mm) from the floor.
To position the drill holes easily, use the mounting
template included in the device delivery.

If the wall is constructed with metal studs, a
support plate is needed when mounting the unit.
Attach a sturdy wooden or steel plate to the
opposite side of the steel stud wall and bolt through
with the single stud mounting plate.
Before mounting the plate make sure that the
bolts, which are used for attaching of the unit, are
put first to the holes so that they come out visible
when the plate is mounted on the wall.
4.2.2 Wide wall mount plate
If the unit is mounted to a wall with 16 inch center
studs specify the site of the unit and fasten the
mounting plate firmly to the wall. Level the
mounting plate.
NOTICE! Any property damage or personal injury
resulting from improper installation could become
the responsibility of the person who has done the
installation.

Accurate dimensions for the mounting plate are in
section 6 Dimensions. To position the device easily,
use the mounting template delivered with the unit.
Place the mounting cover over the mounting plate.
4.2.3 Integration to KaVo treatment unit
Use an appropriate X-ray unit adapter for your
treatment unit. The adapter kits are available from
KaVo as treatment unit accessory.
An integration kit with hardware and mains cable is
available when mounting FOCUS on the KaVo
treatment unit adapter.
Only short reach and medium reach configurations
of the FOCUS can be installed to treatment unit
using the KaVo unit mount adapter.
Short arm is usually recommended. Use the
medium length arm when X-rays are taken in a
laying position.
Follow all local and national safety and electrical
regulations when you install the device.

1. Install the KaVo unit adapter to the treatment
unit's light mounting pole according to the
instructions included with the adapter.
2. Attach the long protective ground wire of the
adapter to the treatment unit according the
instructions with the adapter.
3. Route the mains cable of FOCUS together with
the Ethernet cable from the Remote Control
into the bottom of the treatment unit's pole and
up through the KaVo unit mount adapter,
leaving approx. 15 cm/6 inches of the cables
sticking out through the adapter.
To make the routing upwards through the pole
easier, a string can first be routed down
through the KaVo unit mount adapter and down
the pole. Attach the string to the cables and
carefully pull up the cables using the string.
It is also possible to surface mount the remote
control (see section 4.8 Installing the remote
controller), in this option the Ethernet cable is
routed outside the treatment unit.
