1 Overview
1.1 Introduction
This anual covers the ESUL6-FL2 series. The KBC ESUL6-FL2 products are high
perfor ance, un anaged, eight port industrial Ethernet switches designed for use in
a wide range of operating te peratures in non-environ entally conditioned,
industrial applications. All ports are auto atically configured and the plug-and-play
design provides ease and speed of installation. Redundancy is offered through the
DT-Ring technology that recovers cable or port failures auto atically in less than
100 s. The unit has redundant power supply ter inals and an alar output for
power supply and uplink port failure.
1.1.1 ESUL6-FL2
The ESUL6-FL2 is an un anaged switch which provides 6, 10/100Base-TX twisted
pair copper ports and two uplink, full-duplex, ulti ode or single ode 100Mbps
fiber ports. Each copper port supports a self adaptive function allowing it to be
configured to 10Base-T or 100Base-TX, full or half duplex operation ode,
supporting auto atic MDI/MDI-X connection. The settings of the DIP switch (see
page 9) sets the ode of the fiber uplink ports 4 & 8 (see Fig. 2.2) as either
redundant or straight-through and aster or slave. It is available as either DIN rail
or wall- ount configurations.

2.3 Installation Method
2.3.1 DIN Rail Mount
• Re ove all packaging aterial.
• Attach the device to a DIN rail.
• Attach copper and/or fiber cables as required.
• Insert the ale power block (attached to the supplied in-line PSU) to the
fe ale power socket on the device and tighten the ter inal locking
screws using the flathead screw driver provided.
See Section 2.8 for LED status.
2.3.2 Wall-mount
• Re ove all packaging aterial.
• Unscrew the DIN rail ounting plate fro the switch taking special care
to retain the 2 screws using a Phillips No.1 or No.2 screwdriver.
• Attach the supplied wall ount plate to the switch using the 2 screws that
have just been re oved fro the DIN rail ounting plate with a Phillips
No.1 or No.2 screwdriver.
• Position the unit on the required, flat surface and secure with screws via
the ounting plate holes. Screws are not provided.
• Attach copper and/or fiber cables as required.
• Insert the ale power block (attached to the supplied in-line PSU) to the
fe ale power socket on the device and tighten the ter inal locking
screws using the flathead screw driver provided.
See Section 2.8 for LED status.
2.4 Ethernet RJ45 Connections
The ESUL6-FL2 offers 6, 10/100 Base T/TX RJ45 ports. Each port is adaptive and
supports auto MDI/MDI-X connection. They can be connected by straight through or
cross-over cables to ter inal devices, servers, hubs or other switches. Each switch
supports IEEE802.3x so the opti u trans ission ode (either half-duplex or full-
duplex) and data rate (either 10Mbps or 100Mbps) will be selected auto atically.
The connected devices should support this feature too however, if the connected
devices are not adaptive the port will send at the correct rate but with default ode
of half duplex.

2.5 Fiber Optic Connections
The ESUL6-FL2 offers two pairs of uplink redundant full duplex fiber ports of
100Base-FX which can be either single- ode or ulti- ode. Each optical connector
is a duplex SC. The interface should be used in a pair (Tx and Rx), where the Tx
interface is the optical trans itting ter inal which connects to the optical receiving
ter inal (Rx) of the re ote device. The optical Rx is the receiving ter inal which
connects to the trans itting ter inal (Tx) of the sa e optical interface of the
re ote device. The two pairs of uplink redundant fiber ports can be used to for a
fiber optic redundant ring network. If a syste failure occurs the redundant recovery
ti e of the ring network is less than 100 s.

2.6 Grounding / Earthing
The ESUL6-FL2 has an earth point located on the top panel of the switch. To achieve
the best earth connection, a circular cold-press ter inal should be cri ped to one
end of the earth wire and attached to the unit with the screw, aking sure that the
star washer stays in contact with the body of the switch. The cross-section of
grounding wire should not be less than 2.5
2
.
2.7 DIP Switch Setting
The DIP switch settings are used to set either the fiber uplink ports to redundant
ode (in a ring configuration) or straight-through (not in a ring configuration) and if
they are in redundant ode then whether they are a aster or slave.
Note: In a redundant ring network, only one switch can be set as the aster and
others are set as slaves.

2.9 Power Input Terminals
The ESUL6-FL2 has two green screw ter inal blocks ounted on the top panel of the
switch (see Fig 2.2). The power inputs can be used independently or they can be
connected to two separate external DC power supplies to provide redundancy.
Figure 2.2 Power Input Ter inals
2.10 Alarm Relay Output
The alar ter inal (see Figure 2.3) has a relay output. Under nor al conditions the
relay is open if there is a failure of either of the power supplies the ter inal relay
beco es closed. This ter inal can be connected to other switching devices, lights or
alar s to indicate that a power source has been lost. The axi u voltage this
ter inal can be connected to is 350Vdc and axi u current is 120 A (see the
diagra below for an exa ple of this kind of set up).

3 Troubleshooting
3.1 Self-testing
When the device is powered on, the Power LED will be illu inated showing that there
is power to the unit. The RUN LED will be either on, flashing or off depending on the
DIP switch setting (see Page 9).
3.2 Twisted Pair Port Testing
As shown in Figure 3.1, with the switch powered on, connect two RJ45 ports fro
the switch to two test co puters and send the “ping” co and between each
co puter. If both the co puters receive the co plete co and without packet loss
and the green LED flashes, this eans that the two RJ45 ports are working correctly.
Test the other RJ45 ports as required, using the sa e ethod. During nor al
operation the green ACT LED will flash to show data transfer and the yellow LINK
LED will either be off to show 10Mbps (10BASE-T) operation or on to show 100Mbps
(100BASE-TX) operation.

3.3 Fiber Port Testing
As shown in Figure 3.2, connect two ESUL6-FL2 units via their fiber ports. Then
attach a co puter to any RJ45 port on each device and send the “ping” co and
between the connected co puters. If both co puters get the co and without
packet loss and the corresponding ACT indicators of the fiber ports flash, this then
shows the fiber ports under test are functioning correctly.

5 Networking Configurations
The ESUL6-FL2 offers 6, RJ45 10/100Base-TX ports each of which can be connected
to ter inal devices directly or to another industrial Ethernet switch or hub. The
ESUL6-FL2 also has 2 pairs of uplink 100Base-FX fiber ports which can be used to
for a redundant optical ring which has a recovery ti e of less than 100 s. A
typical redundant ring set up is shown in Figure 5.1 below.
