Keithley 195A User manual

INTRODUCTION
The Keithiey 195A DMM is easiiy interfaced to common cono-ollers us-
ing the IEEE-488 bus. This programming guide contains condensed
specifications and instructional material which describes the various
features of the Mode! 195A. Programs used in this booklet select the 2V
range and crfjtain areading on some common controllers.
All other parameters are left in the tum-on state. Other parameters may
be programmed by expanding the programming command, entered
after "TEST SETUP’’ appears on tie CRT.

ZERO MODE
The zero mode s«ves as ameans of baseline suppression allowng a
stored offset value to be subtracted from

FRONT PANEL FILTER
Filter 1, which is the front panel filter,
averaoe of 64 successive reading samples. Filter 1can also be enabled

The display resolution of the Model 195A may be set to either 414 or 5’A
digits with the front panel RESOLN button.

EXTERNAL TRIGGER
ExtM-nai trigger operates much like front pane! trigger exc^t for the trig-
ger stimulus it^lf. In this case, tiie trigger is applied to the rear panel
BNC 0<TERNAL TRIGGER connector. The input trigger pulse must
conform to TTL logic lev^s. Trigger occurs on the negative going edge
of the pulse.
VOLTMETER COMPLETE
The Modd 195A has an available trigger pulse that can be used to trig-
ger other instrumentation. Asingle pulse, conforming to TTL logic
levels, will appear at the VOLTMETER COMPLETE output on the rear
panel each time the Model 195A completes a conversion.
DIGITAL CALIBRATION
FRONT PANEL CALIBRTION
Front panel calibration is accomplished by connecting an appropriate
calibration signal to the instrument and ainning front pan^ Program 5.
IEEE-488 BUS CALIBRATION
The digital calibration command (V) performs the same operation as
front panel Program 5. Through the use of this command, acalibration
value can be transmitted to the instrument. The calibration command is
of the form Vnnnnnn, where nrepresents anumeric digit.
NON-VOLATILE MEMORY STORAGE
The Model 195A uses anon-voiatile (NV) RAM to store the IEEE primary
address, line frequency, calibration constants, and Model 1950 option
statiis. Once the correct parameters are entered into the machirie,
NVRAM storage can be done ather with front panel Program 1,or with
the Lcommand over the IEEE bus.
The front panel program mode is entered by pressing "PRGM''
followed by the cone^ndlng number.
0. CLEAR
PRGM 0cancds program mode.
1. NON-VOLATILE RAM STORAGE
PRGM 1stores parameters from Programs 3, 4, 5, 6and 8in non-
volatile RAM. Press ENT to perform the store. (Storage occurs
only if in^nai jumpers are set appropriately. See manual for
details).
2. MULTIPLEX
PRGM 2defeats the multiplexing of the input amplifier, "n on =
multiplex ffliabled; "n off' =multiplex disabled.
3. IEEE BUS MODE
PRGM 3aiiowa IEEE address entry. Enter 0-30 for primary ad-
dress. Enter 40 or 41 for talk only (output formats GO and G1
respectivelYl.
4. LINE FREQUENCY
PRGM 4toggles line frequency from 60Hz to 50Hz.
5. CALIBRATION
PRGM 5^Tables digital calibration. First select range and func-
tion to be caMbrated. After properly zeroing, apply calibration
signal to inputs. Press PRGM 5to display default calibration
value. Press "ENT' to perform calibration. If calibration signal
otiier than default is desired, enter new value before hitting
"ENT".
6. TEMPERATURE
PRGM 6enables entry into the temperauire function. Repeated
entry of PRGM 6toggles between °C and °F. To exit, enter
another ftjnction.
7. 100 POINT DATA LOGGER
PRGM 7witCTS the data logger mode. Enter inten.rai from 0to 9.

Press "ENT" to store interval. Press "ENT” again to start data
logging. Press "RECALL" to read data. In recall mode, the
following is available: Press "ENT” =scroll tfirough readings.
"-ENT" =scroll reverse through readings.
0=resume front panel operation.
1=highest buffer reading.
2=lowest buffer reading.
3=average buffer reading.
8. DIAGNOSTIC
PRGM 8performs RAM, ROM, and display test. Pressing a
number performs the following tests.

9. TRIGGER
PRGM 9toggles the hold mode. In the hold mode, areeding can
be triggered by pressing the "TRIG" button, any front panel but-

are not intended to suit specific needs. Detailed programming informa-
tion can be found in the manual.
These programs display one reading at the output of the controller. The
program provides an ASCII string variable output of the form.

The program below obtains one reading from the Model 195A DMM
and displays the reading on the DEC LSI 11 microcomput^ CRT ter-
minal The LSI 11 must be configured with 16k words of RAM ar’d an
IBV 11 IEEE Interface. The software must be configured with IB soft-

The program below obtains one reading from the Model DMM
?and displays the reading on the APPLE II screen, using an APPLE
IEEE-488 interface.

IBM PERSONAL COMPUTER XT or PC

The following program sends acommand string to the Model 195A from
an IBM PC or XT computer and displays the instrument reading on the
CRT, The computer must be equipped with aNational Insmjment
Model GPIB-PC IEEE-488 interface, and the B.O software must be In-
stalled and configured as outlined in the interface instruction manual.
DIRECTIONS
1.Using front panel Program 3, set die Model 195A primary address to
16.
2. With the power off, connect the Model 195A to the 1EEE488 inter-
face installed in the IBM computer.
3. Using the interface software IBCONF program, set up the GPI8.
COM handler ao that "DEV16” has aprimary address of 16. Again,
consult the interface board instruction manual for complete details.
4. Place the Interface software disc In the default drive type LOAD
"DECL", and press the return key,
5. Enter the program below into the computer, pressing the return key
'after each line Is typed. Lines 1-6 are part of the DECL program
previously loaded and need not be typed In,
6. Run the program and type in the desired command swing when
prompted. For example, to place the Model 195A In the one-shot on
talk trigger mode and In the 2VDC range, type in T1 F0R3X and press
the return key.
7. The display will show the Model 195A reading string on the CRT. For
example, with 0volts in, the display will show NDCV +O.OOOOOE +
0.

The following program sends adata sting from the E-H computer to die
Modd 195A and then displays the instrument reading on the computer
CRT. The E-H 7000 must be configured with MS-DOS, lO-SYS, and
BASICA as outlined in its instruction manual.
DIRECTIONS
1. Uang front panel Program 3, program the Mode! 195A for
aprimary address of 16.
2. With the power off, connect the Model 195A to PORT 1of die conv
3. vSle in BASICA, type LOAD "EHE488.CMP" to load the GPIB
handier software.
4. Add tile lines below to the front of the program now in memory;
press the rettim key after each iine is typed. The complete program,
including the GPIB handler software may now be saved in the usual
manner.
5. Press tiie compute F2 key to run the program. The CRT will prompt
wfltii COMMAND? .
6. Type in the desired command. For example, to program the instru-
ment to the 2VDC range and take areading, type in FW2X and press
return.
