mediamusicalinstrumentisthefirstinthisclassofmusicalinstrumentstocombinemodernfeatures
suchasaveryintuitivetouchscreen,multiplayercapabilitiesincludingthenewAudioMultiTracking
feature,StyleModelingandliveSoundsintoaveryaffordablepackage‐designedbymusiciansfor
musicians.Rightoutofthebox,theSD7isreadyforanymusician,performer,studioengineeror
entertainertouseonstage,ataplaceofworship,orinthestudio–withincredibleAudioDrums,
authenticlivebassandbackingtrackssuitableforalmostanysong,thankstothevastlibraryof
professionalsoundsandrhythms.Forsimplicity,thistutorialwillfocusonthemainareasoftheSD7
suchasSOUNDS&VOICES,ARRANGER/STYLES/BEATS,andMultiMediaPLAYER.Mostofthefunctions
ofthismachinerevolvearoundtheseandinsomecasescombinethesefeaturestoofferyoucapabilities
yettobeseenorheardofonanyotherkeyboardinthemarkettoday.
DependingonyourpurposeofpurchasingtheKETRONSD7,youcansetitupforvariousPLAYMODES
basedonyourneeds(Pianist,Organist,Accordionist,Guitarist…etc)simplybypressingtheMENU
buttonontherightsideofthepanel‐ .TouchPLAYMODEtodisplaythefollowingscreen
andselecttheplaymodeyou’reinterestedin.

GETTINGAROUNDTHESD7–NAVIGATION
GettingaroundtheSD7isveryeasyandcanbedoneinanumberofwaysusingthesekeybuttons:‐
1. TOUCHSCREEN:‐Thebrighttouchscreenallowsyoutotouchiconsdirectlyon
thescreen.Toaccesscontentsthatarewithinfolders,simplydoubletouch(asyouwoulddouble
clickonamouse).
2. DATA/VALUEDIAL/WHEEL:‐Thiswheelallowsyoutochangethevaluesofselected
items.So,ifyoutouchanumericicononthescreen(foranexample),youcanturnthiswheelto
changeitsvaluequickly.
3. EXITbutton:‐Thisbuttonisveryusefultogetoutofsubmenusorfoldersandget
backtothemainoperatingscreenoftheSD7duringoperation
4. ENTERbutton:‐Thisbuttonisusedtoenteranddisplaythecontentoffoldersinthe
screenortoconfirmoperationsonthescreensuchaspopupmessages.
5. SAVEbutton:‐Dependingonwhichscreenisbeingdisplayed,thisbuttonisusedto
SAVEcurrentsettings,customstartup,Userstyles,Registrationsetc.Thiswillbeexplainedin
detailswithinthemanualbelow

1. PLAYINGINFULLKEYBOARDMODE(PIANIST)&SPLIT
(ARRANGER)MODE
WhenyouturnontheSD7,itturnsonintheSPLIT/ARRANGERMODE,thekeybedhasaSPLITPOINT
wheretotheleftofthesplitarethekeysusedtocontrolthearrangerorplayseparateLEFTvoice(s),and
thekeystotherightsideareusedtoplayleadvoice(s).TheDEFAULTVOICEfortheRIGHTsideisthe
GRANDPIANO,whilethedefaultvoicefortheLEFTsideistheELECTRICPIANO.
Toassignanewsplitpointonthekeyboard,pressandholddowntheSPLITbuttononthepanel(right
side)

Thecurrentsplitpointwillbedisplayedonthescreen(rightside)asshownbelow:‐
YoucanthenassignanewSPLITpointwhileholdingdowntheSPLITbuttonbypressingthekeyonthe
keybedwhereyouwantthesplitpointtobe.SoifyouwantthesplitpointtobeatF#2,asyouhold
downtheSPLITbutton,presstheF#2keyandthiswillbecomethenewsplitpoint(anditwillbe
displayedonthescreen–rightsectionwherethesplitvalueiscurrentlybeingdisplayed).Releasethe
SPLITbuttononcesetasneeded.Ifyoudon’twantaSPLITpoint(whileholdingdowntheSPLITbutton),
youcanalsopressthefirstkeytotheleftofthekeyboard(C)andtheentirekeyboardwillnowbethe
lead/rightvoice.
TheproperwayhowevertoignorethesplitpointwouldbetopressthePIANISTbutton(leftsideof
panel).
ThisbuttonautomaticallyremovestheSPLITpointandtheentirekeyboardbecomesone…(PIANIST
MODE)‐withonevoice/voices,governedbytheRIGHT/Leadvoiceselection.Inthismode(PIANIST),
youcanthenselectavoiceorvoicesandplaythroughtheentirekeyboard–justasyouwoulddoona
regularkeyboard.InthePIANISTmode,amusiciancanalsoplaythearrangerasaregularpianoandstill
havetheautomaticaccompanimentfollowalongastheyplay(thekeyboardfollowsyouandnotthe
otherwayaround).Thisisdiscussedinmoredetailbelowinsection4.J‐PIANIST(page59)

2.SOUNDS&VOICES
Unlikeanyotherkeyboardyou’vecomeacross,youwillquicklyrealizethattheSD7producessomeof
thebestnaturalsoundsforakeyboardinthisclass.TheSax,trumpets,Pianoandothernatural
instrumentscometolifeand‘breath’inyourhandsasyouplaythemontheSD7,provingonceagain,
thatKETRONhasliveduptoits“BestNaturalSounds”motto.
2.A‐PLAYING&USINGSOUNDS(LEADVOICES)
TheSD7comesloadedwithover500voices.Thereareover350presetvoices(whichareeither
individualsoundsorlayeredvoicesaspreparedbyKETRON).PresstheVOICEbuttonontheSD7’spanel
(rightside)ortouchthecurrentvoiceinthetoprightboxonthescreentodisplaythevoicegroups(to
therightofthescreen)andthevoicesinthecurrentvoicegroup(totheleftofthescreen).

Asyoucansee,theleftsideofthescreenshowsthevariousvoicegroupsorcategorieswhereallthe
voicesinthekeyboardresidein.Thecurrentvoicegroupselectedishighlightedinyellow(intheabove
case,PIANO),whilethevariousvoicesinthisgroupareshownontheleftsideofthescreen(inthiscase
thevariouspianosfoundinthePIANOgroup).Touseavoice,simplytouchit.Ifyoucannotfindavoice
youwant,pressthevoicegroupbuttononcemore(orpresstheENTER/PAGEbuttonbelowthewheel)
toaccessthenextpageofvoicesinthissamegroup.Onceyoufindthevoiceyouneed,simplytouchit
ontheleftsideofthescreenandthisbecomesyournewlead/rightvoice.
2.B‐ACCESSINGANDUSINGMOREVOICES(RAMSOUNDS)
Ifyouneedevenmorevoices,thereareover40professionalhighqualityTonewheelOrganand
OrchestralvoicesonthebuiltinSolidStateDrivewhichyoucaninstantlyloadintomemoryanduseat
thetouchofabutton.ToaccesstheseRAMvoices,presstheRAMbuttononthepanel(rightside).
Thescreendisplayedissimilartothiswhichshowsyouthefirstpageof8ofthesesuperiorvoices.

Byturnin atawheelgthedorpressingtheENTER/PAGEbutton,youcanaccesstheotherpages
ofvoices.[THEAJAMSONICVERSIONHAS30EXTRAVOICESINTHISCATEGORY].Touchthevoiceonthe
screenyouwanttoloadanduse.Whenthehourglassdisappears,thevoicehasbeenloadedandis
readyforuse.

canbeplayedinstantly.Anyvoiceyoutouch(whichisinred)canbeusedinstantly.Ifyoutouchanother

Toselectanew2ndvoiceforthisleadvoice,touchthecurrentvoiceinthe2ndVoicebox.A
screensimilartothisonebelowwillbedisplayed.Thisscreenshowsthecurrent2ndvoicethatis
beingusedforthisleadvoice(left)andthevoicegroupfromwhichthisvoicewasselected
(right).
Youcannowselectyournew2ndvoiceforthisleadvoice,simplyselectthevoicegroup(tothe
right)whereyouthinkyour2ndvoiceresides,thenselectthat2ndvoice(totheleftofthescreen).
Ifyoudonotseethevoiceyouarelookingfor–turnthedatawheelorpresstheENTER/PAGE
buttontodisplaythenextpageofvoicesthatexistinthecurrentcategory/voicegroup.There
aremanypagesofvoicespervoicegroupwhichyoucanaccessthisway.

Whendone,presstheSAVEbutton(belowthedatawheel)tosaveyournewUSERVOICEand
it’scorresponding2ndvoice(remember,youcannotoverwritethefactoryvoicessowhenevera

modificationismadetoafactoryvoiceandyouwanttosaveit,itissavedasaUSERVOICE.This
thereforemeansthatifyougobackandselectthisfactoryvoice,theoriginal2ndvoicethatwas
assignedtoitbyKETRONwillstillbethere,andnotyours).
oSAVE:‐ThissavesyournewuservoiceintheUSERVOICElocationbutwiththesame
factoryname.
oSAVEAS:‐Opensakeyboardwhereyoucannameyournewvoiceandsaveitby
touchingtheENTERbuttononthescreen.Yournewvoicewillnowbesaved(together
withyourmatching2ndvoice)asaUSERVOICE.
oCANCEL:‐NothingissavedandyouwillbereturnedtothepreviousGMVOICESELECT
screen.YoucanpressEXITtogetbacktotheVoiceEDITORscreenandpressEXITagain
togetbacktothevoiceselectionscreen.(TheEXITbuttonusuallystepsyououtof
functionsthesamewayyoucamein…meaningasyougoindeeperanddeeperinto
functionsormenus,youcanusetheEXITbuttontostepoutinstepsaswell…veryuseful

Toplaythisvoice(withyournew2ndvoiceassignedtoit):‐
oPresstheVOICEbuttononcemoretoaccessthevoices.
oTouchUSERonthebottomrightsideofthescreen(itcomesonyellow).Whenyou
touchanyofthevoicegroupbuttonsfromhereon,thevoicesdisplayedtotheleftof
thescreenwillbetheUSERVOICES(notfactoryvoices).Toplaythefactoryvoicesonce
more,thisUSERbuttonmustbeoff(notyellow).
oTouchthegrouptotherightofthescreenwhereyournewvoiceresides(PIANO,
GUITAR).(Hint:‐Itwillbethesamegroupfromwhichyoustartedwithabovewhenyou
wantedtocreateanew2ndvoiceforyourleadvoice).Alltheuservoicesinthatgroup
willnowbedisplayedtotheleftofthescreen.
oTouchyournewvoicetotheleftofthescreenandplay.
oToturnonthe2ndvoice(justasyoudidforthefactoryvoices),simplypressthe2ndvoice
buttonontherightsideofthepanel.Adjustitsvolumeusingthevolumesliderbelowit.
oYoucanalwaysgobackandforthbetweentheFACTORYVOICES(USERVoicebuttonoff
–notyellow)andtheUSERVoices(uservoicebuttonon–yellow)bytouchingtheUSER
voicebuttonthenselectingwhichvoiceyouwanttouseforyourperformance.

EDITING/CUSTOMIZING

Stillnotsatisfiedwithonly2voicestoplay/layerontherighthandandwanttolayer3‐4voicesatonce?
DespiteallthevoicesfoundontheSD7,manywanttobeabletocustomizevoices,layerwith2or3
voices,makechangesandsaveastheirowncustomizedvoice(USERVOICE).Thisisveryeasilydoneon
theSD7.Better,still,usingthissametool/editorasdescribedaboveforthe2ndvoice,youarequickly
abletolayer2or3voicesandcreateoneUSERVOICE(madeupofyour2‐3voices…or4ifyouinclude

the2ndVoicetoo).Thisway,atthetouchofthescreen,youcaninstallrecallyourlayered/editedvoice
andusethemasyouwish.
Tostarteditingavoice,touchandholddownfor2secondsavoiceyouwanttoeditorlayerorthat
comesclosetothevoiceyouwishtocreatetoopentheVOICEEDITOR.Yourscreenshouldlook
somethinglikethis(inthiscase,theLoungeTenorSaxwasselected):‐
ThevoiceeditorintheSD7isquitextensivebutveryintuitiveandeasytouse.Oncethisscreen(Page
1/6)isdisplayedyouwillnoticethefollowing.
4Rowsofvoices.
oThefirst3rows(shownwiththeredarrowsabove)arethevoicesthatcanbelayeredto
createanewvoice.Inthiscase,only1voicewasused(LoungeTenor)tocreatethe
LOUNGETENORvoice.BytouchingtheON/OFFicontotheleftandnexttoeachvoice,
youcanturnon/offindividualvoicesyouwanttouse/layertogether.Asyouturnthe
voicesON,theparametervalues(voice,volume,shift,tune…etc)associatedwitheach
voiceturnsblackshowingthatthisselectedvoiceisnowactivesoyoucanchangeasyou
seeneeded.NB:‐ Evenwheninactive(white)youcanstilleditparametersofavoice
(touchtheparameterandturnthewheeltochangeitsvalue),howevertheeffectsof
thesechangeswillonlybeheardifyouturnthisvoiceON(bytouchingtheOn/Officon
totheleftofthescreen.
oThe4throwisthe2ndvoicetiedtothislead/mainvoice.Thisiswhereyoucanchange
the2ndvoiceofeachleadinstrumentandthenlatersaveasaUSERVOICEofyourown
TotheRIGHTofthisscreen,youcanalsoturnon/offeffectsthatyouwantassociatedwiththe
individualvoices.Theeffecttypeisselectedatthebottom.Youcanalsoassigneffectsthatwill
beactivatedbythevolumepedal(e.g.OVERDRIVETOPEDAL)asshownabove

keys.IfthisbuttonisOFF,thenturningonthePIANISTbuttonwillhavenoeffectonthissound.

oWHA‐WHA:–Ifchecked,thiselement/voicewillhavethewhawhaeffectappliedtoitif
avolumepedalispluggedintotheSD7.Thisvolumepedalcanthenbeusedtomanually
turnon/offthewha‐wha.
oHARMONY:–Addsaharmonytowhichevervoiceitischeckedinhere(wheneverthe
HARMONYbuttononthepanelisturnedon–describedinmoredetailsbelowinsection
2L–HARMONYonPage23).Thishasbroughtaboutgreatharmoniesforsingleor
layeredvoices–dependingonwhichofthe3voicesinthisscreenyouwant
harmonized.

appropriateforyournewvoice(e.g.Steel–whereif2notesareplayedandyoubend
thepitchwheel,onlythelowestnotebends),DuetandTrio–harmonymodeswith2or
3voicesharmonicallyaddedtotheleadvoiceetc.

2.F‐PLAYINGUPTO2VOICESWITHTHELEFTHAND(LOWERVOICES)
Youcanalsoassignupto2separatevoicesandplaythemtogetherorseparatelyontheleftsideofthe
keyboard.Thesevoicesareusuallydeterminedbythestylethatiscurrentlybeingused,butwewill
showyouhowirrespectiveofthestyleselected,youcancallupandusevoicestotheleftoftheSPLIT
pointofthekeyboard.
FirstmakesureyourSD7isdisplayingthedefaultscreen(screenitpowersonwithorsimilar.If
not,simplypressEXITrepeatedlyuntilyougetthere).Yourscreenshouldlooklikethis:‐
PresstheVIEWbuttonfromthispagetodisplaytheSTYLEVIEW–allthe
elements/musicians/tracksthatmakeupthestyle.ThiswillincludetheLOWER1(LOW1)and
LOWER2(LOW2)‐2leftmanualvoicesasshowninthenextscreen:‐

Inthisexample,thefirstLOWERVOICE(LOW1)iscalledSOFT,andthe2ndLOWERVOICE(LOW2)is
calledEL.PIANO1.ThismeansthatiftheLOWERvolumesliderisupandyouplayanykeytotheleftof

whichyoucanchangebytouchingitandadjustingusingthedatavaluewheel.TheLOWERvolumeslider

usefulespeciallyifyouhavePAD/SYNTHorSTRINGvoicesontheLEFTsideandyoudonotwant
abreakbetweenwhenyouplay/changechordsontheleft.Inordertohaveacontinuousvoice,
usethisfeature.Tostopplayingthevoice,turnofftheHOLDSTOPontheappropriateLOWER

YoucanalsoplaylefthadBASSontheSD7,i.e.playbasslinesmanuallyontheleftsidewithyourleft
hand,whileplayingleadpartswithaseparatevoiceontherightsideofthekeyboard.Toaccomplishthis
quicklyandeasily,simplypresstheMANUALbuttonontheleftsideofthepanel.
NowwhenyouplayanynotestotheleftoftheSPLITpoint,youwillhearthebass(Bassinstrumentis
determinedbywhateverstylehasbeenselectedpriortothis).So,youcannowplayamanualbasssolo
withyourlefthand.Tochangethebassinstrumentcurrentlybeingused–
