Easy Phase Finder
a new concept in locating
the true live supply
Anyone who has used phase (live conductor) detection devices
to locate the true live supply will know the frustration of
false indications.
With lights flashing and beepers sounding off at every
opportunity it is small wonder that so many live cables are cut
causing potentially serious accidents.
We also have the typical service feed into a premises
where the connection must guarantee the main
service cut out fuse is really in the phase - live feed

Battery Installation
Before operation of your Kew Technik
Phase Finder a MN 1604 (or similar)
9V battery (not supplied) must be
correctly installed.
Remove the screw securing the battery
compartment (be careful not to lose
it). Slide the cover down and connect
battery ensuring correct polarity.
After insertion of the battery it is
essential to test for correct function
before use.
Pre-Use Check
EPF 10 Quick Test - test by placing the tip on a known live
source, the red LED should light
EPF 20 Craftsman - press and hold the self test button the
red LED should light with a continuous tone to indicate correct
operation.
EPF 30 Professional - press and release the test button, the
red LED will blink with an audible bleep to indicate correct
operation and memory scanning functions operating.
Press and hold down for over one second for off.
Note auto power is a feature to conserve battery life.
The unit will auto power off after three minutes of inactivity.
Remove screw
(do not lose it) and
slide off cover to
replace batteries.

Holding the Instrument
Uniform sensitivity in operation will be achieved by holding the
phase finder in the position illustrated on page 2, gripping the
unit fully in the hand, and not changing your grip during testing.
The raised finger guard protects against accidental contact with
the conductor. Always keep fingers below the guard as shown.
Operating Instructions
With all three Models EPF 10, EPF 20 and EPF 30 the tip
should be placed in (firm) contact with the terminals or
exposed cables under test - live conductor(s) found will be
indicated by:
EPF 10 Quick Test - A bright red LED
EPF 20 Craftsman - A bright red LED and continuous tone
EPF 30 Professional - A bright red LED and continuous tone
(after switch on EPF 30 will give flashing LED and bleep to
indicate correctly operating plus scanning function).

EPF 30 Professional Scanning Feature:
One problem for all single pole contact and non contact
devices is the FALSE LIVE indication of ‘floating’ (typically open
circuit) conductor(s) that are in the proximity of the true live
conductors. EPF 30 Professional uses Patented ‘True Phase
Locate’ memory scanning to eliminate false signals to give a
clear and positive indication of true live phase(s) found with a
continuous bright red LED and continuous tone.
The test button can be momentarily pressed at any time to
clear and reset the memory function (this feature helps to
‘focus’ on true live conductors if there are many open circuit
conductors in a cable bundle or terminal block).
To use the memory scanning feature momentarily press the
memory scanning button (to reset the memory) and
sequentially touch the tip to each conductor.
If the EPF 30 Professional still detects more than one live
signal repeat the test KEEPING THE TIP IN PLACE ON EACH
CONDUCTOR FOR A MINIMUM OF 2 SECONDS so the
memory can ‘lock’ the true signal until only true live
conductors are found.
Warning
By the law of chance you may contact the live cable first (or
you may choose to check what you assume is the live cable
first). Clearly the true phase locate memory function will then
eliminate all lower voltage cables WHICH MAY STILL BE
CARRYING VOLTAGES GREATER THAN 50V AC.
It is always good practice to hit the memory re-set button
and re-test any conductors or terminals BEFORE attempting
to handle or cut them AS EVEN INDUCED VOLTAGES CAN
BE DANGEROUS.

Explanation of symbols used on instrument
CATIII 300V
- Installation Category III classification 300V a.c to Earth
The phase finder is double insulated
Hazard - Disconnect from supply before opening battery cover
Suitable for use on 110V, 230V & 400V mains supplies. Note this
includes 400V a.c. mains phase to phase supplies as the phase
finder measures phase to earth voltage which is a nominal 230V
a.c. on a 400V a.c mains supply.
Specification
Voltage 50-300V a.c to Earth. Frequency 50-60Hz. Current<5µA.
Installation category III. Pollution degree 2. Suitable for use only in
a dry environment. Temperature range 5-40°C.
Maintenance
Apart from the battery replacement this unit is maintenance free
and contains no user serviceable components. Clean by wiping
with a damp cloth with a light soap (non-detergent). Do not
allow ingress of water. Ensure unit is thoroughly dry before use.
Warnings
Before each use check the unit for damage and conduct the
pre-use check. If the unit is damaged in any way or is suspected
of not working correctly it should be withdrawn from service and
replaced or returned to Kew Technik.
If used in a manner not specified by Kew Technik the protection
provided by the equipment may be impaired.
