Kinsa Smart Ear User manual

How to maintain the accuracy of your Smart
Ear
We developed and tested our thermometers for maximum accuracy around typical human body
temperatures ranges:
Between 95 ℉ and 107.6 ℉
Between 35 ℃ and 42 ℃
If you notice or suspect inaccurate readings from your Smart Ear, follow these steps to fix the
issue:
1. Make sure the tip of the Smar Ear thermometer is clean. First, remove the cap. Using a
cotton swab with alcohol, gently circle it around the inner sensor area at the tip of the
Smart Ear. Be sure to clean the inner flat surface of the sensor - not just the rim (see
picture below).
2. To ensure an accurate temperature reading for children 1 year or older, and adults, gently
tug the ear straight up and back, then snugly insert the tip into the ear canal and press the
large button. Per the U.S. Mayo Clinic, digital ear thermometers aren't recommended for
newborns.
3. Remove the batteries for one minute and then reinsert them. This will allow the Smart
Ear’s internal components to reset which can fix accuracy issues.
4. Lastly, perform a factory reset your Smart Ear by holding down the large power button
and the small button on the left side for about ten seconds. Let it power all the way off
before you pair and take a new reading.

Smart Ear Setup
Once you download the free Kinsa app from the App Store or Google Play, go to your phone’s
Settings and enable Bluetooth. On most devices, it’s listed at the top of the Settings menu. Then
go back to the Kinsa app, open it, and select the Ear you are setting up –Sesame Street Ear or
Standard Ear.
Next, remove the Kinsa Ear battery cover and check that the Kinsa is set to display the units you
want. You can choose to have the Ear display either Celsius or Fahrenheit. Put the batteries in,
press the big button to turn on the thermometer, and follow the prompts in the app to pair.
NOTE: The Bluetooth pairing mode on your Kinsa thermometer turns off after 30 seconds of
inactivity to save battery life, so if you're having trouble pairing you can reset the Ear:
1. Remove or delete any previously connected Kinsa devices from your smartphone's
Bluetooth settings
2. Press and hold the small white Bluetooth button which is on the left side of the
thermometer.
3. Next press and hold the large round power button located above the LCD screen.
4. Keep holding both buttons down until the screen resets twice. The screen should start
flashing, beep, flash again, beep again and then display the Bluetooth icon at the top.
You should hear two beeps in total.
That should get the app to prompt and get you paired so that you can take temperature readings!
Once you’ve taken some readings, if the Kinsa app wasn’t running when you took them, they’re
very easy to import into the app. For instructions please see “How do I import Kinsa Ear
readings?”
If you run into any problems while setting up your Kinsa, please see:

Android - Troubleshooting connecting the
Smart Ear
If you are having trouble connecting your Kinsa Smart Ear, don’t worry! There are just a few
simple steps to getting you on track.
IMPORTANT: If you are a Nougat OS user, and pairing the Kinsa ear keeps failing, go to the
phone’s Settings and turn off Bluetooth. Power off the phone and then power it back on. Turn on
Bluetooth and try pairing the Ear with the Kinsa app once more. For a running thread on this
issue see Google’s forum post here.
Get latest version of the Kinsa app (new customers skip this step):
If you were using the Kinsa Ear but it stopped connecting, on your Android device go to the
Google Play app store and tap “Menu > My Apps & Games”. See if there is an update for the
Kinsa app. If so, update the app.
Remove the Kinsa Bluetooth device from your phone:
1. On your Phone, open Settings > Bluetooth (must be on).
2. Under Paired devices look for KS_ If it appears, tap on the gear icon next to it and select
“Unpair”.
3. Press the Home button to exit settings.
Reset the thermometer:
1. Press and hold the small white Bluetooth button which is on the left side of the Ear
thermometer.
2. Next press and hold the large round power button located above the LCD screen.
3. Keep holding both buttons down for 5-7 seconds until the screen resets. The screen
should start flashing, beep, and then display the Bluetooth icon at the top.
Now you’re ready to pair!
1. Open the Kinsa app.
2. Open the menu on the top left.
3. Tap “Set up Thermometer”.
4. Tap the appropriate “SET UP NOW” option (Elmo or Standard Ear).

5. If the Kinsa turned off, press the power button to turn it on. If the Ear is on but the
Bluetooth icon has disappeared, hold down the white Bluetooth button until the Bluetooth
icon appears again.
6. Tap “PAIR DEVICE”. Note that for some Android devices, the pairing request dialog
may appear in the Notification bar at the top of the screen.
Unless the PIN message below appeared, that’s it! Now you’re ready to take a temperature
reading with your Kinsa Ear.
PIN Message: Some Android users may report seeing an “Incorrect pin or pass key” message
preventing further set up. Certain android phones have a security feature named "Smart Lock”
which prompts a PIN or pass key in order to complete set up of Bluetooth devices. The prompt
can present itself in various ways, depending on phone type. Sometimes the prompt is in the
Notifications bar at the top of the screen, it’s an audible alert, or it’s a dialog box on the screen.
Each user should research how Smart Lock works on their individual device, including finding
out what your PIN or pass key is for your device, for it may vary across device types.
Pairing issues can sometimes be related to receiving a pair prompt by Smart Lock, while not
being aware such a prompt was received. It may be possible to adjust the Smart Lock settings to
either not require a PIN for Kinsa, or disable it entirely. There are a number of tutorials and
support articles about how to manage Smart Lock, so you can choose your favorite.

Android - Troubleshooting Stick Setup or
Temperature Reading errors
There are a few issues that can interfere with the setup or temperature reading of your Kinsa
Stick thermometer on an Android device, but don’t worry – we will take you through each
possibility until you’re ready to go.
The first thing to check for is your device compatibility by accessing “Which smartphones work
with the Kinsa?”
If it is compatible, using about 3 minutes of your time this is what we will check for next:
Physical device connections
Audio settings:
oTurn off all sounds –Off
oMono Audio –Off
oAudio Balance –centered
Disabling apps like BoomSound or PowerAmp
Latest app version
Reboot Smartphone
By checking each of these, we can almost guarantee that your problem will get solved - and stay
solved! So let’s begin.
Connection Problems
Sometimes connection problems happen between the app and the thermometer. To be sure there
aren’t any, the following tips should be applied.
1. Launch the Recent Applications menu.
2. Swipe right to close the Kinsa app.
3. Be sure the headphone jack is clear of lint. You can clean the headphone jack by gently
using a toothpick to clear it out.
4. Finally make sure you listen for a ‘click’ when you use any of these combinations of
plugging your:
oKinsa into the black adapter (setup only)
oBlack adapter into the phone (setup only)
oKinsa into the phone
oKinsa into the extension cord
oExtension cord into the phone

Audio Settings
Now that everything is clean and connected, let’s check some of your smartphone's audio
settings as these can cause setup and temperature reading issues as well.
NOTE: We will be calibrating / setting up the thermometer after checking these settings. If setup
was completed once before, don’t worry. Calibrating the thermometer a second time can only
help with temperature reading accuracy.
Most Androids will look something like this, but with slightly different names and locations.
1. Open your Android Settings.
2. Navigate to Accessibility > Hearing.
3. If turned on, switch “Turn off all sounds” to off.
4. If turned on, switch “Mono audio” to off.
5. Access the Sound Balance section (you might need to tap “Left and right sound
balance”). Nexus 6 users: Because you DO NOT have a sound balance section, if you
have installed an app that allowed you to change the audio balance, open that app to
center the audio.
6. Move the audio balance slider to the far left and release it.
7. Move the slider back to center. It should snap into place once you're close enough. Make
sure the slider is completely centered. If it is even slightly off like the first image below
you’ll need to try again. The second image is centered.
8. Tap SET (if displayed).

NOTE: In order for Kinsa to work every time you take a temperature reading:
“Mono Audio” and “Turn off all sounds” need to be off
Audio balance needs to be centered
Apps that amplify sounds or music, like BoomSound or PowerAmp, need to be disabled
in order to use Kinsa. This is because Kinsa utilizes the headphone jack for calibration,
and requires the audio settings to be at the system default values.
Update the Kinsa App
Finally let’s update the app in case it is an older version (skip these steps if you just installed the
app).
1. On your phone, go to the Google Play app store.
2. Tap “Menu > My Apps & Games”.
3. Scroll down and see if there is an update for the Kinsa app. If so, update the app.
Reopen the Kinsa app, navigate to the menu option (upper left), and tap “Set up
Thermometer”. Do not touch the volume during setup.
If the app doesn’t appear to sense the adapter/thermometer, make sure the flat side of the
thermometer is even with the surface it is resting on. You can even give the adapter and
thermometer a quarter or half turn each. Turning the audio plug(s) may help the phone detect the
connection and initiate setup.
If still an issue, restart your phone and try setup once more (leaving volume untouched).

After set up completes, try a reading but:
Avoid eating or drinking any liquids, exercising, taking showers or baths, or smoking for
15 minutes prior to use, as these activities can cause mild elevations in temperature.
Leave the thermometer still while you take a temperature.
Don’t change the phone volume.
Wait about 30 seconds between readings. Kinsa takes its best readings from room
temperature, so back-to-back readings can confuse it.
Reboot Smartphone
Lastly, we recommend rebooting or restarting your smartphone to clear out any junk settings or
glitches which may be causing trouble.
This should resolve your setup or reading issue. Note that if your phone is running Nougat,
please see our other FAQ here for additional information: https://support.kinsahealth.com/hc/en-
