Unpacking the KNP3D

WhenunpackingtheKNP3D,werecommendplacingtheprinteronthefloor.Openthetopofthe
boxandremovethecartonsthatsurroundtheprinter.Next,removetheprinterbyliftingitbythe
topmetalframe.DoNOTremovetheprinterbyliftingitbythecables.takenotethatthe2boxes
atthebottomoftheshippingboxcontainthepowercable,USBcableandthefilamentguides.
OncetheKNP3Dhasbeenremoved,andplacedonaworksurface,opentheboxthatcontains
theKNP3Dextruderandremovetheboxfromtheprinter.Thebuildplateshouldnowbevisible.
You’llnoticeathinyellowlayerofkaptontapecoveringtheceramicbuildplate.Donotremove
thisfilm.Thisiswhatyou’lleventuallybeprintingon.

Next,thebuildplateneedstoberaised.Thiscanbedonebyeitherrotatingthegiantthreaded
screwdirectlybehindthebuildplate,orbygentlyliftingthebuildplate.Raisethebuildplateupas
highasyoucan,towhereit’salmosttouchingtheextruders.

Underneaththebuildplateyou’llfindtwoboxesoffilament.Carefullyremovethese,aswellas
anyremainingpackaging.Besurenottoliiftthebuildplatetohigh,asitcanhit,anddamagetheZ
axislimitswitch,(locatedonthesmallcircuitboard,onthebacktopcenteroftheprinter).


Hardware Setup

It’stimetofastentheextrudersintoplace.Startbyloweringthebuildplateallthewaydownby
turningthegiantthreadedscrew,orgentlypushingdownonthebuildplate.Opentheboxwhich
containstheextruderandremoveitfromtheplasticsleeve.Placetheextruderontheextruder
mount.Makesurethatthecoolingfansarefacingforward.Onceinplace,locatethehexwrench
and2silverbolts,(foundinthesameaccessoryboxthattheextruderwasin).Tightenthetwo
boltsonthebottomsideoftheexturder.

Next,openthetwolongboxesthatwereonthebottomoftheshippingcartontolocatethe2
spoolholders.OnthebackoftheKNP3D,you’llnotice2holes—Oneforeachofthespool
holders.Installthesebyunscrewingtheoutermostnutonthespoolholder,instertintothe
circularholeandthentightenthenut,frominsidetheKNP3D.

Locatethetwoblackfilamentguidetubes.Slipeachtubeintothefastenersonthebackofthe
KNP3Dandsnaptheminplace.

Nowplugthepowercableintothepowerportonthebackoftheprinter.Besurethepower
switchisturned“off”beforepluggingthepowercordintoapoweroutlet.

Laststep!placearolloffilamentonrightspooloftheKNP3D.Makesureyouplacetherollon
wherethefilamentfeedsupfromthebottomsideofthefilament.


Software

Thereareafewpiecesofsoftwareyou’llneed,tocreatefilesthattheKNP3Duses.


KNP3D converter overview:

KNP3DConverterisapostprocessingapplication.ThiswilltakethegcodefilesfromSlic3rand
convertthemintoaformattheKNP3Dunderstands.
DownloadKNP3Dconverterhere

Windows Installation:
KNP3DConverterisaselfcontainedexecutable.Thismeansthereisnoinstallprocess.You
simplydownloadit,extractitandit’sreadytouse.Wesuggestsavingitsomewhereaccessible,
likeyourdesktop.

Mac OSX Installation:

DoubleclickthedownloadedDMGfile.OnceFinderopens,dragtheKNP3DConvertericoninto
yourapplicationsdirectory.

KNP3DConvertercanbeutilized2ways:

1. OpenKNP3DConverter,selecttheinput(gcode)filecreatedfromSlic3r,choosean
outputlocation,(Ex:anSDcard)andhit“convert”.

2. AftercreatingaagcodefilefromSlic3r,openthefolderwherethefile(s)hasbeensaved.
Simplydragthegcodefile(s)ontotheKNP3DConvertericonanditwillautomatically
generatethe.x3gfilesandsavethemintheoriginatingfolder.







Slic3r Overview:
Slic3risthetoolyouneedtoconvertadigital3Dmodelintoprintinginstructionsforyour3D
printer.Itcutsthemodelintohorizontalslices(layers),generatestoolpathstofillthemand
calculatestheamountofmaterialtobeextruded.



Windows Installation:
MuchlikeKNP3Dconverter,Slic3risalsoaselfcontainingexecutable.Simplysave,extractand
andyou’rereadytogo!

Mac OSX Installation:
DoubleclickthedownloadedDMGfile.OnceFinderopens,dragtheSlic3riconintoyour


Eventually,you’llwanttocreatesomeofyourownprofiles.However,we’vecreatedafewfor
you,togetyoustarted.Unlessyouhaveexperiencewith3Dprintingand/orSlic3r,westrongly
recommendstartingwithourprofiles:


PleasenotethatusingtheourprinterprofileswillonlyworkproperlywhenrunningSlic3rin
Expertmode.Tochangetoexpertmode,gotoFile>Preferences:

Your first print
Athispoint,youshouldhavealreadycoveredtheGettingstartedsection.PowerontheKNP3D.
We’renowreadytolevelourbuildplate.

Leveling the Build Plate
Thelevelingprocedureisverystraightforwardandrathereasy.You’llneedtofindasmallpiece
ofpaper,(computerprinterpaperwillworkjustfine).Goto:Utilities>LevelBuildPlate.Then
clicktheOKbutton.Theextruderheadwillfirstmoveoverthetherightandthebuildplatewilllift.
Oncethebuildplatehascomeallthewayup,theexturderheadwithpositionistelfinthecenter
ofthebuildplate.Youcannowmanuallymovetheextruderheadindifferentpositionsonthe
buildplate.Sincethisisamanualprocess,youcanmovetheextruderheadinasmany
positionsasyouwouldlike.However,we’regoingtomovetheheadto3differentpositions,(over
eachadjustmentknob).Onthebottomofthebuildplate,you’llnotice3adjustmentknobs—Two
inthefrontandoneontheback.gentlymovetheexturderheadaboveeachknob.
Usethepieceofpapertotestyourlayerheight.Youshouldbeabletoslipthepaperbetweenthe
extrudertipsandthebuildplatewithslightresistance.Ifyoucan’sslipthepaperbetweenthe
extruderandthebuildplate,youhaveittoohighandneedtotightentheknob.Ifyoucanslipthe
paperbetweenthebuildextruderandbuildplate,withroomtomovethepaperupanddown,you
havethebuildplatetoolowsoitwillneedtobeloosened.Thisprocesscanalwaysberedoneby
goingtoUtilities>levelBuildPlate.

Loading Filament:
Beforeloadingthefilament,besuretodisconnecttheguidetubefromthetopoftheextruder.
Next,feedthefilamentintothebottomoftheguidetubeuntilitcomesoutthetopside.
Nowthatyouhavefedthefilamentthrough,onthecontrolpanelgoto:Utilities>Filament>Load
Right.(Ifyouplantouseonlyonefilament,therightsideisconsideredthedefault).Theextruder
headwillnowbeginheatinguptoabout220°C
