Chapter 1: Initial Set Up
This chapter will walk you through the set up and basic workflows to get you started
printing with your Create 3400 System.
1.1 Unboxing
Please read this section thoroughly. Failure to remove all the packaging can damage your
printer. Create O&P recommends you save the box and shipping materials in the event you
need to transport or ship your printer. If damage to the printer or shipping materials
occurred, please document with pictures and contact Create O&P immediately.
•Inspect the box for any damage that may have occurred during shipping.
•Remove the straps
•Lift the sides of the box off.
•Remove the Styrofoam cap. The cover is in the cap. Gently remove the cover from
the Styrofoam.
•Remove the remaining Styrofoam.
•Gently remove the printer from the box by lifting it up. This is a two-person job.
•Once the printer is out, inspect for damage.
•Remove all 24 X and Y axis shipping clips and their zip ties.
•Using a 3mm hex wrench, unscrew the 2 Z axis shipping clips located on the Z
Screws.
•Manually raise the print bed using the Z Screws.
•Remove the items inside the printer.
•The power cord can be found in the box inside the printer. It plugs into the back of
the printer.

1.2 Install the hatch box
•Remove the pieces from the Hatchbox.
•Using the included nuts and bolts, attach the
filament roll to the holes on the top.
•Attach the included filament guide tube, found in
your Create toolbox.
1.3 Printer Hardware
For a complete list of printer parts and
terminology, see Appendix A.
•A) The home position for the Create 3400 is
in the front left hand corner.
•B) The two vertical screws spanning the
height of the printer are the Z Axis screws.
They control the height of the print bed.
•C) The Calibration screw is responsible for
zeroing the Z axis. See Section 1.5 Calibrate
Print Bed for instructions.

1.4 Printer Screen Functionality
Home
•Change the temperature by clicking on the current
temperature (left & right nozzle, heated bed). A key pad will pop
up to set the temperature. Enter the desired temperature and
click enter. The set temperature is the small green number and
the current temperature is the larger white number.
•Click the gear to reach the settings menu.
•Stop/Pause Button allows you to stop or pause the print. This
may take several minutes to see a change.
•The image of what you are printing will only appear if you
generate the g-code in IdeaMaker.
Tune
•L-Nozzle Temperature and R-Nozzle Temperature- allow
you to change the temperature of the nozzle after the
print has started.
•Heated Bed Temperature- allows you to change the
temperature of the heated bed after the print has started.
•Feed rate- allows you to change the speed of the print as
a percent of the initial speed. 100 is equal to the speed
set in the slicer.
•Fan Speed- allows you to change the fan speed as a
percent of the initial speed.
•L-Flow Rate and R-Flow Rate- changes the amount of
filament being extruded as a percent of the initial flow rate.

Utilities
•Colored Arrows- moves the respective axis (green- x and y,
blue- z, red- nozzle).
•Colored Home Button- move the respective axis to its original
location.
•Filament Loader Arrows- changes the temperature set point
for the desired nozzle to load filament.
•Load/Unload- warms the nozzle up to the corresponding
temperature and allows for filament loading or unloading.
Print
•Local Storage- files preloaded onto the machine
•SD Card and USB Storage- files loaded via SD Card or USB
Storage
1.5 Calibrate Print Bed
•Locate the calibration screw. When you open the printer door, the calibration screw
is in the upper left hand corner on the front of the machine. See Appendix A: Printer
Terminology for reference.
•To raise the print bed, turn the screw clockwise. To lower the print bed, turn the
screw counterclockwise. Repeat until the nozzle is approximately 0.2mm off the
build plate. For your convenience, a 0.2mm gauge is included in your toolbox.

•Select the Blue Z-Axis Home button on the Utilities screen to see how the calibration
went. You may need to repeat this process several times.
1.6 Loading and Unloading Filament
•Navigate to the Utilities Screen.
•Set the loading/unloading temperature for the desired nozzle.
oPLA- 215°
oPETG/PCTG- 255°
oFlexy- 235°
•Select Load/Unload for the desired nozzle. The printer will begin to heat up. When it
reaches the set temperature the printer will prompt you to continue.
•For Loading: Select load. Insert the filament into the top of the extruder. Be sure to feed
the filament through to the gear. Once the filament reaches the gear, it will take 1-2min
for filament to begin extruding through the nozzle.
•For Unloading: Select Unload. The printer will unload the filament. When the filament is
through the gear, remove the filament from the extruder.
1.7 Remove and Install a Nozzle
You will need:
•Needle nose pliers
•6mm Socket Wrench
•Desired Nozzle
Prep:
•Unload the filament.
•Heat both sides to at least 260°by tapping the Left Nozzle Temp/Right Nozzle Temp
on the Home Screen and entering the desired temperature.
Steps:
•Use the needle nose pliers to hold the heater block still while using the socket
wrench to unscrew the nozzle.

•Start threading the desired nozzle into the heater block. Use the socket wrench as
needed.
oThis can be done by hand. Be careful because the nozzle heats up quickly.
oThis does not have to be done while holding the heater block still.
•As soon as nozzle has any resistance, hold the heater block with the pliers and
continue to tighten the nozzle.
If the nozzle is not tight enough, it will cause the filament to leak out of the heater

1.8 Setting up for a print
•Install the handles on the right side of the
printer.
•Gently grab the extruder and be sure it
moves in all directions.
•Load the Build plate into the machine.
Slide it into the installed clips in the back
and add 2 binder clips on the front edge.
Note: the build plate is not perfectly
square so you made need to rotate it 90
degrees.
•Open the box of accessories that came in
the printer. Inside you should find a power
cord. Plug the cord into the back of the
printer and into the wall. Turn the printer on.

•When the printer is fully on, the screen will display the home menu. Click on utilities
and select the Green House Button to home the X and
Y axis.
•Next, select the Blue House Button to home the Z
Axis. Your Z axis was calibrated before shipping;
however, when the print bed is done leveling, ensure
the nozzle is approximately 0.2mm off the top of the
build plate. A 0.2mm gauge has been included in the
toolbox for your convenience.
oIf you need to recalibrate your machine, See
Section 1.5 Calibrate Print Bed for details.
•Load the filament into the machine. See Section 1.6
Loading and Unloading Filament for details.
•Select the print you want. For your first print, use the
Mini Socket which was pre-programmed onto the included USB drive. See B.1: PLA
Socket for complete details. When you are done with B.1, print the wrist brace using
the B.2 worksheet.
1.9 Cleaning and Maintenance
To keep your printer running smoothly, routine cleaning is required. Cleaning should occur
after every print.
•Heat the printer up to 270° and load 9”-12” of extruder purge.
oIf the purge shows dirt and debris through the entire piece, load another
piece of extruder purge.
oIf this does not solve the problem, unload any filament in the machine and
use a cleaning needle which corresponds to the nozzle size. Then load
another piece of extruder purge.
oRepeat these processes until the purge no longer contains debris after
extrusion.

1.10 Tips and Tricks to Solve Printing Problems
Starting a print:
•If the z-height isn’t calibrated correctly, you can manually turn the z-screws to adjust
the height of the print bed. Keep in mind that if the nozzle is too close to the print
bed, it will make it more difficult to remove it from the build plate.
•If the print is not adhering to the build plate, check the distance between the nozzle
and build plate. See details above on adjusting the z-height. If you are printing with
Flexy, replace the tape and spray with spray adhesive. If you are printing with PLA or
PETG, make sure the print bed is heated to 70°. Adding a layer of tape may also be
useful.
During a print:
•The speed can be adjusted under the Tune menu on your Create 3400. Slower
speeds will increase quality.
•If the print is shaking, check that the build plate has all 4 clips on it. If it does, you
can add some superglue to the base of the print to keep it adhered to the print bed.
After a print:
•If the print is stuck to the print bed, heat the print bed to help remove it.
•It may be necessary to use an Exact-O blade or grind the print to remove any ooze
and travel.

Chapter 2: IdeaMaker
IdeaMaker is a powerful slicing software included with your printer package. It allows you
to take a 3D model and transform it into a file your printer can recognize and print, a
.gcode.
2.1 Installing and Setting Up IdeaMaker
•Load the USB drive into your computer and launch the IdeaMaker installer.
•Choose your language preference. Select Okay. It recommended that you close all
other open applications at this point. When you are ready, click next.

•Choose your install location. IdeaMaker will default to C:\Program
Files\Raise3D\ideaMaker\. Select Browse for a different install location. Click next.
•Choose your Components. You do not need the Printer Driver and may deselect it if
you would prefer. When you are ready, click install.

•When the installation is complete, click next, and finish on the next screen.
•If IdeaMaker didn’t automatically open, launch it.
•Go to Printer Printer Settings Add Printer

•Import a 3D model by clicking the “Add” button or FileImport Model.

•Once the model is imported, click “Start” or Slice Start Slice. A pop-up should
appear allowing you to select a template.
•Import the 3 templates provided by Create O&P by clicking “Import”. The templates
can be found on your USB drive.

•Enter the desired template name and click OK. Repeat for all 3 templates.
•At this point, you can exit the Select Template pop up.
•IdeaMaker is now set up!
2.2: Make a Printer File (G-code)/ Introduction to IdeaMaker
If you just completed Section 2.1 Installing and Setting Up IdeaMaker, and imported the
model you would like to print, start at step 3. If you would like to print a different model,
select the current model and click “Delete”. Start at step 2.
1. Open IdeaMaker.

2. Click the “Add” button to import a model.
3. Use the “Move” and “Rotate” buttons to orient the model as desired. With one of
these tools engaged, you can click and drag the model or click the wrench on the left
side of the screen to enter the desired values.

4. With your model positioned correctly, click on the “View” tool.
5. To select your extruder, select your model, then click the wrench. A drop-down
menu will appear with options for Right or Left Extruder. If you are printing with
Flexy, select left extruder. If you are printing with PLA/PETG/PCTG or another rigid
material, select right extruder.
