ACCORDANCE WITH NATIONAL AND LOCAL ELECTRICAL CODES.

- PLEASE READ THIS SECTION CAREFULLY BEFORE INSTALLATION -
WARNING – TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE, ELECTRIC SHOCK OR PERSONAL INJURY,
OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING:
1) Installation work and electrical wiring must be done by qualified professionals and in
accordance with all applicable codes and standards, including fire-rated construction.
2) When cutting or drilling into wall or ceiling, be careful not to damage electrical wiring or
other hidden utilities.
3) Ducted fans must always be vented to the outside.
a) Before servicing or cleaning unit, open the light panel and SWITCH POWER OFF AT
SERVICE PANEL.
b) Clean fan, optional filter and grease laden surfaces frequently. To reduce the risk of fire
and to properly disperse air, make sure to vent air outside. DO NOT vent exhaust air
into wall spaces, attics, crawl spaces or garages.
NOTE - This warranty is invalid without an authorized
agent’s receipt or if unit is damaged due to misuse,
poor installation, improper use, mistreatment,
negligence or any other circumstances beyond the
control of KOBE RANGE HOODS authorized
agents. Any repair carried out without the
supervision of KOBE RANGE HOODS authorized
agents will automatically void the warranty.
- KOBE RANGE HOODS will not be held responsible
for any damages to personal property or real estate
or any bodily injuries, whether caused directly or
indirectly by the range hood.
CAUTION – FOR GENERAL VENTILATION USE ONLY. DO NOT USE TO EXHAUST
HAZARDOUS OR EXPLOSIVE MATERIALS AND VAPORS. TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE,
USE ONLY METAL DUCTWORK. SUFFICIENT AIR IS NEEDED FOR PROPER COMBUSTION
AND EXHAUSTING OF GASES THROUGH THE FLUE (CHIMNEY) OF FUEL BURNING
EQUIPMENT TO PREVENT BACK DRAFTING. FOLLOW THE BEATING EQUIPMENT
MANUFACTURER’S GUIDELINE AND SAFETY STANDARDS SUCH AS THOSE PUBLISHED BY
THE NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION (NFPA), AND THE AMERICAN SOCIETY
FOR HEATING, REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING ENGINEERS (ASHRAE), AND
CODE AUTHORITIES.

-IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS-
WARNING – TO REDUCE THE RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY IN THE EVENT OF A
RANGE TOP GREASE FIRE:
 Keep fan, optional filter and grease-laden surfaces clean.
 Always turn hood ON when cooking at high heat.
 Use high settings on cooking range ONLY when necessary. Heat oil slowly on low to
medium setting.
 Don’t leave cooking range unattended when cooking.
 Always use cookware and utensils appropriate for the type and amount of food being
prepared.
 Use this unit only in the manner intended by the manufacturer.
 Before servicing, switch power off at service panel and lock service panel (if possible) to
prevent power from being switched on accidentally and DETACH the fuse (see section
Changing the Fuse).
What to Do In The Event Of ARange Top Grease Fire
1) SMOTHER FLAMES with a close fitting lid, cookie sheet, or metal tray, and then turn off
the burner. KEEP FLAMMABLE OR COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL AWAY FROM
FLAMES. If the flames do not go out immediately, EVACUATE THE AREA AND CALL
THE FIRE DEPARTMENT or 911.
2) NEVER PICK UPABURNING PAN – You may get burned.
3) DO NOT USE WATER, including wet dishcloths or towels – a violent steam blast will result.
4) Use an extinguisher ONLY if:
a) You know you have a Class ABC extinguisher and you already know how to operate it.
b) The fire is small and contained in the area where it started.
c) The fire department has been called.
d) You can fight the fire with your back to an exit.
What to Do If You Smell Gas
- Extinguish any open flame.
- Do not try to turn on the lights or any type of appliance.
- Open all doors and windows to air out any amount of gas. Call the Gas Company and
Fire Department right away.
CAUTION Turning on any switch may cause ignition or an explosion.

Unpack hood and check contents; remove template, & plastic packet of small parts.
- PREPARING THE INSTALLATION LOCATION -
----SAFETY WARNING----
INTERIOR OF HOOD MAY HAVE VERY SHARP EDGES, PLEASE
WEAR PROTECTIVE GLOVES IF YOU HAVE TO OPEN THE
HOOD FOR CLEANING OR SERVICING.
NOTE: TO AVOID DAMAGE TO YOUR HOOD,
PREVENT DEBRIS FROM ENTERING THE
VENT OPENING.
Make sure the surface of the wall is clean and free of debris.
Providing Electrical Power Line Access (SHOULD BE DONE BYALICENSED
PROFESSIONAL)
1. If there is no electrical power line access opening, you will need to make an opening first
before you can proceed further. To make an electrical power access opening, mark an outline
for the opening on the cabinet bottom. Use a 1-1/4” wood bit to form the access opening.

EXISTING ELECTRICAL CABLES, WHICH WOULD CREATE A
HAZARD. ALL ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS MUST BE IN
ACCORDANCE WITH LOCAL CODES, ORDINANCES, OR
NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE. IF YOU ARE UNFAMILIAR
WITH METHODS OF INSTALLING ELECTRICAL WIRING,
SECURE THE SERVICES OF A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN.

WITH ANY SOLID-STATE SPEED CONTROL DEVICE.

- INSTALLING THE RANGE HOOD -
(Keep all packing materials for return or exchange)
Temporarily wire the hood to test for proper operation before installing.
Before installing, please peel protective film off the hood first, if any.
For Mounting on a Cabinet with a Flush Bottom
1) If you need to move the cooking range to work on the cabinet, turn off the power for an
electric range at the main electrical box. SHUT OFF THE GAS BEFORE MOVING AGAS
RANGE.
2) To make an electrical line access opening, please refer to section Electrical Power Line
Access. Attach the template guide under the cabinet where the hood is to be installed making
sure the arrows on the template is pointing to the wall (Fig 1a). Measurements are provided
on patented installation template guide for those having difficulty using the template to
install on a recessed bottom cabinet.

3) Screw four 1” wood screws (for mounting the hood) into the exact center of the plastic
anchor marked on the template guide (Fig.1b). Make sure the head of the screw is
comfortably resting against plastic anchor. CAUTION: The plastic anchor is the exact
thicknesses of the top of the hood so do not over-tighten screws.
4)
a) For top venting: (CH-178 Series) cut along the dotted line of the template leaving a
rectangle opening on the bottom of the cabinet. Tear out & dispose of the template. This
rectangle opening is required for 6”, 7” or 3 ¼” X 10” ducts. Remove temporary
plastic vent portion on the top of the hood. Replace with the actual vent cover that came
with the hood. Cut along the indented outline for the size of the duct opening that you
need. (Fig. 2) Fasten plastic vent piece with the raised surface facing outward back onto
the top of the hood. Follow step 4).

b) For rear venting: (CH-178 Series) unscrew the rectangular plastic vent portion at the
back of the hood. (Fig.4) Turn over the vent piece so that the flat surface is facing you.
Cut along the indented outline until there is a 3 ¼” X 10” opening. Fasten plastic vent
piece with the raised surface facing outward back onto the hood.

5) Take the hood, place electrical power line through access opening (Fig. 1d), align the 4
mounting slots at the top of the hood to the 4 screws, hook the hood into place & slide toward
wall. The hood should snap backward into place (Fig.1e). CAUTION: MAKE SURE THE
HOOD IS SECURE BEFORE RELEASING.
6) Unfasten the safety screen screw just enough to allow the hooked end of the screen to slide
between the hood & the screw. Place the rectangular side of the safety screen into the open
slot just to the back of the recessed fan, then place the hook end against screw & tighten
screw. Do NOT over-tighten screw.
7) Slide each rectangular oil container into the oil container slots at the back of the safety
screen. (Fig.5)
8) Finally, place a round oil container with the three prongs into the larger holes in the specially
made openings in the center of the screen & turn clockwise until it snaps into place. Do the
same for the other round oil container. (Fig.6)

For Mounting on a Cabinet with a Recessed Bottom
1) If you need to move the cooking range to work on the cabinet, turn off the power for an
electric range at the main electrical box. SHUT OFF THE GAS BEFORE MOVING AGAS
RANGE.
2) Measure the space (under the cabinet) between the inside front edge and inside back edge
(Fig. 3). With a saber saw, cut two wood filler strips (not included) to fill in the bottom of
the cabinet. Use 2-1/4” long wood screws (not included) to attach wood strips to the cabinet.
For metal cabinet, use 3/8” x 2-1/2” bolts and nuts to secure the strips to the cabinet. The
hood will be mounted on these filler strips. (For a more secure installation, you can also use
screws from inside the cabinet down into the wood filler strips.) Make sure the filler strips
do not cover the electrical power line access opening.

3) Follow installation instructions from the section For Mounting on a Cabinet with a Flush
Bottom.
Installing the CH178 (42”)(48”) Hood
1) A minimum of 2 people should lift the CH 178 (42”) (48”) hood in installing under
cabinet to avoid injury and damage to the hood.
2) Proceed to the instructions from the section “For Mounting on a Cabinet with a flush
Bottom.”
For Venting the CH 178(48”) Hood
1) The CH7848 should be discharge upward to utilize the maximum power of the fan.
2) For vertical discharge, run ductwork between the hood locations to the roof cap.
For best result use a minimum number of transitions and elbows.

Making The Electrical Connection (SHOULD BE DONE BYALICENSED PROFESSIONAL)

HOOD FOR CLEANING OR SERVICING.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE ELECTRICAL POWER IS TURNED OFF BEFORE STARTING
THIS SECTION.
1) After turning off the electrical power at the main power source, push the electrical power line
through the access opening drilled earlier in the wall or bottom of the cabinet. There are three
different color wire strands to be connected. Strip solid wire 5/16” and strip stranded wire
3/8”.
2) Connect the power line ground wire to the grounding green lead supplied with the hood.
3) Make the electrical connections by fastening the black power wire to the black wire and the
white power wire to the white wire located in the electrical wiring compartment. Align any
frayed strands or conductors. Screw on conductors; push wires firmly into connectors when
starting. Stop when the bottom of the connector reaches conductor. Follow all codes.
4) Plug into electrical outlet. Turn on power and check operation of fans and light.
Congratulations, your KOBE range hood is ready to be used!
NOTE: The recommended height from range hood
bottom to top of the cooking surface is 30”.

- OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS -
KOBE range hood motors can be operated independently of one another.
This KOBE range hood model is operated by two 2-speed switches located on the front of the
hood. Each switch controls a separate motor with high and low settings. (Fig. 4) The low
setting will handle most exhaust requirements while the high speed should be used for heavier
cooking.
The light switch is located to the right of the control switches. (Fig. 4) NOTE: Before replacing
light bulb, turn off range hood. See section on Changing the Light Bulb. DO NOT uses more
than 12V 20W halogen light (CH-178 Series).
If your range hood is equipped with the QuietMode™ feature, the LED indicator switch will be
located to the right of the light switch. When the QuietMode™ switch is turned on, the LED
indicator will be lit and both fans will change into QuietMode™ regardless whether one or both
fans were on. When QuietMode™ is switched off; the previous controls will take effect.
Remember to turn off control switches after you are finished.
The QuietMode™ feature offers continuous ventilation at a greatly reduced noise level.
