1. BEFORE YOU BEGIN
A. INTRODUCTION
Please read these instructions carefully to familiarize
yourselfwiththerequiredtools,materials,andinstallation
sequences.Followthesectionsthatpertaintoyourpartic-
ular installation. This will help you avoid costly mistakes.
In addition to proper installation, read all operating and
safety instructions.
All information in this manual is based upon the latest
productinformationavailable atthetime ofpublication.

2. PRODUCT REQUIREMENTS
A. SUMMARY OF KEY REQUIREMENTS
Observe all local plumbing and building codes.
Install the unit level with the subfloor.
Provide properly-dimensioned framing.
Make sure the drain location corresponds to the
bath outlet.
Beforeyoubeginanywork,carefullyuncrateandin-
spect the new bath for any damage. Enameledcast
iron may chip; make sure there is no damage to the
newbath.Ifthereisaproblem,donotinstallthebath
– report the problem to the dealer immediately.
B. PRODUCT INSPECTION
Carefully uncrate and inspect the bath for damage.

4. INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

C. CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS
Check roughing-in and room dimensions to provide
adequate space for the bath unit.
D. NEW OR REPLACEMENT INSTALLATION
REQUIREMENTS
This bath unit can be installed in new or existing
bathrooms.
For new installations: Position plumbing according to
roughing-in dimensions located on Page 2. Cap the
supplies and check for leaks.
For replacement installations: Remove the old bath,
the old wall material, and the old finished floor material
fromthearea.Removeanyoldplumbingwhichdoesnot
conform to roughing-in requirements.
5. SITE PREPARATION
A. OLDBATH REMOVAL
Disconnect the drain at the trap. Remove the old wall
material. Slip boards under old bath feet to protect
the floor and slide the old bath out of the recess as
illustrated.

B. SUBFLOOR PREPARATION
Check the flooring under the bath and repair it if
necessary. Make sure the subfloor is level. Seal the
subfloor to reduce the risk of water damage.
C. STUD POCKET PREPARATION
Construct a recess designed for this particular
installation. Framing is of 2x4 construction. When
constructing framing, allow for the thickness of sub and
finished wall materials.
Bath should be installed in a recess. Possible studding
arrangement is illustrated below; modifications may be
needed for other types of construction.

D. PLUMBING PREPARATION
Position plumbing according to roughing-in dimensions.
Cap the water supplies and check for leaks.
6. BEFORE INSTALLING UNIT
A. PARTIALLY INSTALL BATHDRAIN
Install the drain to the bath according to the
manufacturer’s instructions.
B. PROTECT BATH UNIT
Position a drop cloth or similar material in the bath
bottom. Be careful not to scratch the bath.

7. INSTALL BATH
A. BATH SET-IN
Slidethenewbathintoposition.Insertthedrain tailpiece
intothetrap.Levelthebathbyplacingmetalshimsunder
the bath feet, as necessary. The bath must be level and
resting on all four feet. Check for level along the top and
endofthebath, andacross the drainside. Thebathmay
have to be moved in and out of the recessarea until itis
shimmed properly if the feet are not accessible from the
back or side.

B. INSTALL PLUMBING
1. When the bath is securely positioned, connect the
drain into the trap. The drain tailpiece may have to
be removed and cut to fit the trap properly.

2. Install the faucet valving and spout tee. If the
faucets are deck-mounted, the deck must be
finished before the handle trim and spout can be
installed.Open thehotandcold watersuppliesand
check all connections for leaks.
3. Run water in the bath and check the drain
connection for leaks.

8. FINISHED FLOOR REQUIREMENTS - OPTIONAL K-8740 DRAIN SHROUD
NOTE: For installations that use the optional drain
shroud, the finished floor thickness cannot exceed
1-1/8”. If the thickness of the finished floor exceeds
1-1/8”, shim the bath to provide clearance for drain
shroud installation.
1. Apply a very thin (not to exceed 1/16”), even bead
ofclearsiliconesealanttothetwobackedgesofthe
drainshroud. Setthedrainshroudasideonaclean,
soft surface until the silicone sealant has fully
cured.
NOTE: The purpose of this silicone sealant is to provide
a strain-relief cushion between the bath wall and the
drain shroud. It is not required to provide a water-tight
seal.

2. Center the drain shroud around the installed drain.
Besuretoaligntheholesintheshroudtabswiththe
holesintheundersideoftherim.Drawtheoutlineof
the drain shroud bottom edge onto the subfloor
surface or a flat piece of cardboard. Then measure
and mark a series of closely-spaced cut lines
outward from the drain shroud outline. These cut
lines must be between 3/4” and 7/8” out from the
drain shroud outline.
NOTE: If the finished floor cut out is less than the 3/4”
minimum required, the finished floor will interfere with
future drain shroud removal and drain access. If the
finished floor cut out is more than the 7/8” maximum
required, the finished floor may extend beyond the
outside edges of the drain shroud base.
3. Use the cut lines to establish the finished floor
cut-out area for the drain shroud. Cut out the
finished floor.

9. OPTIONAL K-8740 DRAIN SHROUD INSTALLATION
Slip a flat washer onto each of the hex-head screws
provided. Insert one of these screw/washer
combinations up through the hole in one of the drain
shroud tabs. Set a plastic spacer over the screw so the
spacer rests upon the top of the drain shroud tab.
Carefully lift the drain shroud up against the underside
of the bath rim, and start to thread the screw into the
correspondingthreadedholein therim.Repeatthisstep
for the second screw.
Pressthedrainshroudtightlyagainsttheapronwall,and
use a 7/16” ratchet or combination wrench to tighten
each screw until the drain shroud is secure.
NOTE: Do not overtighten the screws.

Apply a thin bead of silicone sealant to the bottom,
outside edge of the shroud base. Apply a second thin
bead of silicone sealant close to the bottom of the inside
surface of the shroud base.
Carefully install the shroud base at the bottom of the
drain shroud so there is a small, uniform gap between
the drain shroud and the shroud base.
Allow the silicone sealant to cure before cleaning the
drain shroud and shroud base.

10. COMPLETE FINISH WALL
CAUTION: Risk of product damage. Do not
support the weight of the bath by the rim.
Protect the bath surface. Cover framing and walls with
gypsum wallboard.
Apply a bead of silicone sealant where the gypsum
wallboard meets the bath. Install wall covering so it is
1/16” above enameled surface. Install finished wall
material to subwall. Seal joints under bath rim and
finished wall.
Apply a bead of silicone sealant along the bottom edge
of the apron. It is not necessary to apply additional
silicone sealant to the optional drain shroud assembly

11. COMPLETE INSTALLATION
A. INSTALL HANDLES AND SPOUT
After the deck is finished, attach the handles and spout
to complete the faucet installation according to the
faucet manufacturer’s instructions.
12. CLEAN-UP AFTER INSTALLATION
When cleaning up after installation, do not use
abrasive cleansers as they may scratch and dull the
bath surface. Use warm water and a liquid detergent to
clean the surface.
Stubborn stains, paint, or tar can be removed with
turpentine or paint thinner. Do not allow cleaners
containing petroleum distillates to remain in
contact with the bath surfaces for long periods of
time. Plaster can be removed by scraping with a wood
edge. Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, or other
metal tools. A powder-type detergent may be used on a
dampclothtoprovidemildabrasiveactiontotheresidual
plaster.
13. IMPORTANT CARE AND CLEANING INFORMATION
Quality Kohler enamel is fused to red-hot cast iron. The
resulting glass-hard surface and lustrous depth of color
isbeautifultolookat,easytocarefor,andmoreresistant
to scratching than plastic materials. As with any smooth
surface, however, avoid using abrasive cleansers on
your cast iron bath. Abrasive cleansers will scratch and
dull the surface over time.
