WARNING: Risk of scalding or other severe injury.
CAUTION: Risk of scalding hazard. This device has been
calibrated at the factory to ensure a safe maximum water
temperature. Any variance in settings or water inlet
conditions from those used during factory calibration may
raise the discharge temperature above the safe limit, and may
present a scalding hazard.
•Before completing installation, the installer must set the
maximum water temperature setting of this valve to minimize the
risks associated with scalding hazards according to ASTM F 444.
The installer is responsible for adjusting the maximum water
temperature of this valve according to instructions.
This valve meets or exceeds ANSI A112.18.1 and ASSE 1016.
If you do not understand any of the temperature adjustment
instructions in this document, in the United States please contact our
Customer Service Department at 1-800-4KOHLER. Outside the U.S.,
please contact your distributor.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please fill in the blanks in the information box
in the Homeowners Guide and on the valve label. Retain the
Homeowners Guide for future reference.
•The maximum temperature is calibrated so the outlet water
temperature does not exceed 120°F (49°C).
•Factory calibrated inlet conditions are:
Hot and cold water pressure = 45 psi (3.2 kg/cm
2
)
Hot water supply temperature = 145°F (63°C)
Cold water supply temperature = 65°F (18°C)
•If inlet conditions differ from those used during factory
calibration, it may be necessary to re-calibrate the valve after
installation. The installer must check the mixed flow
temperature after installation, and adjust the valve as needed
according to the instructions.

Integral Supply Stop Operation
NOTE: Use a 3/8″square drive or 10 mm hex wrench to adjust the
stops.
Turn Off the Stops
Use a 3/8″square drive or 10 mm hex wrench to turn the integral
stops 90° counterclockwise to shut off both the hot and cold water
inlet supplies.
NOTE: If the integral stop turns, but the outer ring does not turn,
firmly tighten (clockwise) the integral stop. Then rotate
counterclockwise. The outer ring should then turn with the integral
stop.
Confirm the stops are closed using the diagram above.
Turn the flow control counterclockwise to release excess water.
The cartridge may now be removed for servicing or replacement.
NOTE: Keep a rag handy to catch excess water that will gradually
drain when valve cartridge is removed.

Service the Stops
NOTE: Keep a rag handy to catch excess water that will gradually
drain when stop cartridge is removed.
Turn off both the hot and cold water at the nearest supply
shut-off or water main.
Verify that the water is off before continuing.
For models with a locking bar, loosen the two screws, slide the
locking bar up until it is clear of the stops, and tighten the screws
to keep the locking bar from sliding back down.
Use a 3/8″square drive or 10 mm hex wrench to remove the stop
assemblies.
Thread the new stop assemblies into the valve and tighten.
Open the stops using a 3/8″square drive or 10 mm hex wrench.
Loosen the screws on the locking bar and slide it down.
Tighten the screws.
Turn on the hot and cold water supplies.
Check for leaks.

Servicing the Filters
Turn off the water supply.
Remove the trim.
Close the stops following the directions in the previous section.
NOTE: 1/2″models do not have a locking assembly, 3/4″model
shown.
Insert a 3/8″square drive or 10 mm a hex wrench into the
appropriate stop (hot is left side, cold is right side) and remove it.
Remove the screen assembly by turning clockwise.
Clean or replace the screen assembly as needed.
Rotate the flow control clockwise 90° to close it.
Install the screen to the stop assembly.
Reinstall the screen assembly by pushing in and turning
counterclockwise.
Open the supply stops and check for leaks.
Reinstall the trim.

Check the Maximum Water Temperature
CAUTION: Risk of personal injury. If the maximum water
temperature is above 120°F (49°C) the water temperature
must be reset to 120°F (49°C) or below to minimize scalding
hazards. Do not set the water temperature above 120°F
(49°C). Setting the water temperature at or below this
temperature will minimize the risk associated with scalding
hazards.
Turn on the water supply if it is not already on.
Remove the plaster guard.
Turn the water to full hot by turning the handle counterclockwise
until it stops.
Let the water run for at least two minutes.
Use a thermometer to determine the temperature. Make sure the
maximum temperature is below 120°F (49°C).

Maximum Hot Water Adjustment
Turn the valve off.
Remove the trim or mud guard if present.
Remove the stem screw. Do not remove the stem adapter.
NOTE: The spline adapter will most likely stay inside the stem
adapter. Do not remove the spline adapter from the stem if it does
not remain in the stem adapter.
Insert the provided 2.5 mm hex wrench into the center of the
stem. Make sure it fits snugly into the head of the hex screw at
the bottom of the stem.
Turn the hex screw clockwise to decrease the temperature,
counterclockwise to increase it.
Position the stem adapter on the stem and turn the water to full
hot.
Use a thermometer to determine the temperature of the water.
Repeat the adjustment with the hex wrench until the desired
temperature is attained.
Reinstall the screw and tighten.
Reinstall the trim.
Allow the water to flow for several minutes to stabilize the water
temperature.
Loosen and remove screw.
Do not remove stem adapter.

Troubleshooting
This troubleshooting guide is for general aid only. For warranty
service, contact your dealer or wholesale distributor.
Symptoms Probable Cause/Recommended
Action
1. Only hot or cold water from
outlet. A. Inlet supplies are reversed. See ″Reversed Inlet Supplies″section
of the valve Installation Guide.
B. No hot water reaching shower
control.
C. Check filter screens for
blockage.
2. Fluctuating or reduced flow
rate. Normal function of thermostatic control when operating conditions
are unsatisfactory.
A. Check filter screens for flow
restriction.
B. Make sure that the minimum
flow rate is sufficient for supply
conditions.
C. Make sure that inlet
temperature differentials are
sufficient.
D. Service stops are not fully
threaded in. Rotate both service
stops until fully threaded.
E. Service stops are not fully open.
Open them all the way.
F. Check thermostatic performance;
renew thermostatic cartridge, if
necessary.
3. No flow from shower control
outlet. A. Check filter screens for blockage.
B. Hot or cold supply failure;
thermostat holding correct
shutdown function.
C. Flow control cartridge does not
work. Check and replace if
necessary.
D. Service stops are shut off.
Rotate both stops
counterclockwise.
4. Blend temperature drift. Indicates operating conditions
changed.

5. Maximum blend temperature

6. Water leaking from the valve
body. Seal(s) worn or damaged.
A. Obtain service kit and replace
seal(s).
B. If leaking from around the
temperature spindle, replace the
thermostatic cartridge.
7. Flow knob or temperature
knob is stiff to operate. A. Impaired free movement of internal components. Remove the
trim faceplate and reinstall with
the drive features aligned as
directed in the installation guide.
B. Replace the valve cartridge.
8. Flow control handle does not
move. A. Remove the flow handle, rotate the flow control on the cartridge
clockwise to the ″OFF″position.
Turn it slightly counterclockwise
(about 5 degrees) and reinstall the
flow handle. Confirm the
temperature control is engaged
and test the operation of the
controls.
B. Replace the valve cartridge.
