transponderfunctionality,SSBLandLBLpositioning,andtelemetrycapabilities.
cNODEMiniS1.11-50VTiiscompatiblewithbothCymbalprotocolforpositioningand
datalinkandFSKchannelsandtelemetry.
Thetranspondersareratedto11000mwithahousingmadeoftitanium.Theyhave
aninternaltiltsensor±90°,anexternalon/offfunctionandapressurereliefvalvefor
safetypurposes.

andcanbepoweredfromROVs24Vduringoperation.Anon-deckbatterychargeris

Thebatterychargerchargestheinternalbatteryinapproximately1hour.TheLED
chargestatusindicatorshowswhenchargingiscomplete.
InadditionthebatterychargerforthedeepwaterMiniS1.11–50VTihasanadapterfrom

Generalacoustic
considerations
Takethisinformationintoconsiderationwhendeployingthetransponders.
Acousticrange
Thetermdepthratingshouldnotbeconfusedwiththetermacousticrange.Theacoustic
rangeisdependentonmanyfactors,andsomeofthefactorsareoutsidethecontrolof
theuser.
Vesselsystem
Thedirectivityandcoverageareaforthevesselsystemisdifferent,dependingonwhich
systemyouareusing.Somesystemshavehighdirectivityandomnidirectionalcoverage,
whileothersystemshasreducedcoverageandlessdirectivity.Thetranspondershould
alwaysbewithinthecoverageconeofthevesselsystem.
Transducertype
Therearedifferenttypesoftransducersusedwiththetranspondersdependingon
operationalneeds.Anomnidirectionaltransducer,suchasaTD180,coversalarge
area,buthaslessacousticpowercomparedtoafocusedtransducer,suchasTD50V .A
focusedsignalgiveslessfootprint/coverage.Thevesselshouldalwaysbewithinthe
signalfootprintofthetransponder.
TxPower
Theabilitytodetectsignalsdependsonthesignalstrength.Thetransmissionpowercan
beadjusted,bothforthevesselsystemandforthetransponder.
Acousticnoise
Acousticnoiseispresentatallvessels.Atgivenconditions,thenoiselevelcanbe
excessive.Acousticnoiseiscausedbymainpropellersandthrusters,andinsome
instancesalsofrommachineryand/orpumpsonboard.Heavypropeller/thrusteruseor
alsowavescanalsogenerateairbubbles,whichcangetinfrontofthevesseltransducer
andblocktheacousticsignal.

2Connectwire6and8inthepigtail(theON/OFFfunction).
When6-8arelinked,thetransponderisON.
Withnoconnectionbetween6-8,thetransponderisOFF.
3Makesurethattheexternalpowersupply24VDCisbetween20and28VDC.
4Checktherespondertriggersignal.
5SwitchONtheunitbyinsertingtheexternalpower/respondercable.
Changingbetweenresponderand
transpondermode
Thetranspondercanalsobeusedasaresponderunit.
Prerequisites
Thetranspondermustbechargedbeforeuse.
BydefaultwhenthecNODEMiniS1.11-50VTiisturnedonitisintranspondermode.
Thesignalinputfortheresponderfunctionmustbebetween2and6mswithapositive
pulseof5to24V .
Procedure
1Whenrespondertriggersignalsarereceived,themodeisautomaticallychanged
toresponder.
2Oncetherespondertriggersignalsstop,itwilltake1minutebeforethecNODE
MiniS1.11-50VTichangesautomaticallybacktotranspondermode.

1Iftheunithasbeenalteredfromthefactorypre-sets,checkthattheunitis
conguredaccordingtoyourrequirements.
2Makesurethebatteryisfullycharged.
3Pushthepressurereliefvalvein.
4SwitchthetransponderONbyinsertingtheon/offplug.
5PerformanacoustictestusingaTransponderTestandConguration(TTC)unit:
aInterrogatethetransponder.
bReadbatterystatusandconrmthatitwilllastfortheupcomingoperation.
cReadthepowersettingandconrmitiscorrectfortheupcomingoperation.
Result
Thetransponderisthenreadyforuse.

Thetransponderisdesignedforoperationinwateronly.Thetranspondermaybe
operatedinairfortestpurposesoverashortperiodoftime.

Recoveringthetransponder
Itisimportanttoperformtheserecoverychecksaftereveryoperation.
Procedure
1Washtheunitthoroughlyinwarmfreshwatertodissolveanysaltdepositsand
cleanoffanysandorsilt.
2Asanextraprecaution,itisrecommendedthattheunitislefttosoakinfreshwater
toallowsalttodissolveanddiffusefromhard-to-reachareas,suchascrevices
betweenmatingparts.
Leavetheunittosoakfor24hours,oraslongaspracticalconditionsallow.
3Dryofftheunitandmakesurethatthereisnowateraroundtheon/offplugor
theexternalconnector.
4Turntheunitoffbyremovingtheon/offplugordisconnectingtheexternalcable.
5Rechargetheunit.
Result
Thetransponderisthenreadyforuse.

Cymbalistheacousticprotocolusedbothforpositioningofsubseatranspondersin
SSBL/LBLmodanddatacommunicationtoandfromtransponders.ItusesDirect
SequenceSpreadSpectrum(DSSS)signals.
