Introduction

Getting Started
We recommend that you:
•Unpack the equipment carefully and save the original box and packaging materials for
possible future shipment.
•Review the contents of this user manual.
Go to www.kramerav.com/downloads/VM-400HDCPxl to check for up-to-date user manuals,
application programs, and to check if firmware upgrades are available (where appropriate).
Achieving Best Performance
•Use only good quality connection cables (we recommend Kramer high-performance,
high-resolution cables) to avoid interference, deterioration in signal quality due to poor
matching, and elevated noise levels (often associated with low quality cables).
•Do not secure the cables in tight bundles or roll the slack into tight coils.
•Avoid interference from neighboring electrical appliances that may adversely influence
signal quality.
•Position your Kramer VM-400HDCPxl away from moisture, excessive sunlight and dust.
Safety Instructions
Caution:
•This equipment is to be used only inside a building. It may only be connected to other
equipment that is installed inside a building.
•For products with relay terminals and GPI\O ports, please refer to the permitted rating
for an external connection, located next to the terminal or in the User Manual.
•There are no operator serviceable parts inside the unit.
Warning:
•Use only the power cord that is supplied with the unit.
•To ensure continuous risk protection, replace fuses only according to the rating
specified on the product label which located on the bottom of the unit.

Overview
Congratulations on purchasing your Kramer VM-400HDCPxl 1:4 DVI Distributor. The high
quality VM-400HDCPxl accepts an DVI/HDMI™signal and distributes the selected signal to
up to four DVI output connections.
VM-400HDCPxl is a 1:4 distribution amplifier for up to 4K@60Hz (4:2:0) HDMI signals,
complying with HDCP 1.4 content protection standard, via single-link DVI connections. The
unit takes one DVI input, equalizes and reclocks the signal, and distributes it to four identical
outputs.
The terms HDMI, HDMI High-Definition Multimedia Interface, and the HDMI Logo are trademarks or registered trademarks of HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc.
Exceptional Quality
•High Performance Distributor –Professional 1:4 DVI distributor for up to 4K@60Hz
(4:2:0) video resolution signals. Via single-link DVI connections, one HDMI, HDCP 1.4
input signal is amplified and distributed to four identical output signals, with signals
rebuilt using Kramer Equalization & re-Klocking™ Technology to gain longer distances.
•Secured Operation –Highly-secured operation is ensured by lockable wiring connectivity
with protection against unintentional cables disconnection.
•HDMI Signal Transmission –HDCP 1.4 compliant, supporting deep color, x.v.Color™, lip
sync, 7.1 PCM, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, 2K, 4K, and 3D as specified in HDMI 2.0.

Figure 1 defines the front and rear panel of VM-400HDCPxl.

Function
OUT DVI Connectors
Connect to DVI acceptors.
OUT 4 is located on the front panel OUT 1 to OUT 3 on the rear panel.
INPUT DVI Connector
Connect to an DVI/HDMI (over DVI connection) source.
PROG Mini USB Connector
Use to send serial commands.
Connect to a PC RS-232 port to perform firmware upgrades
(via K-Upload) and work with the EDID Designer.
K-Upload and EDID Designer can be downloaded from our website at:

To use the mini USB port, you need to download and install the Kramer
USB driver from our website:
www.kramerav.com/support/product_downloads.asp.
EDID SETUP Button
Press to capture an output EDID or select the default EDID.
IN LED
Lights green when an active input signal is detected.
OUT LEDs
Light green when an active output acceptor is detected (from 1 to 4).

Current EDID on page 7and Forcing RGB Mode on page 8.
ON LED
Lights green when the unit receives power.
5V DC Connector
Connects to the 5V DC power supply.

Mounting VM-400HDCPxl
This section provides instructions for mounting VM-400HDCPxl. Before installing, verify that
the environment is within the recommended range:
•Operation temperature –0to 40C (32 to 104F).
•Storage temperature –-40to +70C (-40 to +158F).
•Humidity –10% to 90%, RHL non-condensing.
•VM-400HDCPxl must be placed upright in the correct horizontal position.
Caution:
•Mount VM-400HDCPxl before connecting any cables or power.
Warning:
•Ensure that the environment (e.g., maximum ambient temperature & air flow) is
compatible for the device.
•Avoid uneven mechanical loading.
•Appropriate consideration of equipment nameplate ratings should be used for avoiding
overloading of the circuits.
•Reliable earthing of rack-mounted equipment should be maintained.
To mount VM-400HDCPxl in a rack:
Mount the unit in a rack using the recommended rack adapter
(see www.kramerav.com/product/VM-400HDCPxl)
To mount VM-400HDCPxl on a table or shelf:
•Attach the rubber feet and place the unit on a flat surface.
•Fasten a bracket (included) on each side of the unit and attach it to
a flat surface.

Always switch off the power to each device before connecting it to your VM-400HDCPxl.
After connecting your VM-400HDCPxl, connect its power and then switch on the power to
each device.

To connect VM-400HDCPxl as illustrated in the example in Figure 2:
1. Connect the DVI source (for example, a Blu-ray player) to the DVI Input connector
on the front panel.
2. Connect the DVI outputs to up to four DVI acceptors (for example, an LCD display).
3. Connect the power adapter to VM-400HDCPxl and to the mains electricity (not shown in
Figure 2).

Acquiring and Setting Current EDID
Press the EDID SETUP button once to display the current EDID source: OUT 1, OUT 2,
OUT 3, OUT 4, or all OUT LEDs flash indicating the VM-400HDCPxl default EDID.
To acquire an EDID:
1. Press the EDID SETUP button .
The current EDID status is displayed.
2. Press the EDID SETUP button (a second time).
The device enters EDID setup mode.
3. Press the EDID SETUP button repeatedly.
The device cycles through the EDID source options and the OUT LEDs light up in
the following order: OUT 1 -> OUT 2 -> OUT 3 -> OUT 4 -> all OUT LEDs flash.
Stop pressing the EDID SETUP button once the required EDID source is reached.
4. Wait a few seconds, until VM-400HDCPxl acquires the EDID.
When complete, all OUT LEDs return to normal operation, displaying the present
output connection status.
If an unconnected output is chosen or the connected EDID cannot be read, VM-400HDCPxl
loads the default EDID.
Acquiring a Custom EDID
You can acquire a custom EDID, using the Kramer EDID designer, via the mini USB port on
the front panel.
To acquire a custom EDID:
1. Download EDID Designer to your PC from our website at Kramer EDID Designer.
2. Connect the device to your PC via the mini USB port.
3. Follow EDID designer instructions.
To use the mini USB port, you need to download and install the Kramer USB driver from
our website at: www.kramerav.com/support/product_downloads.asp.

Forcing RGB Mode
Normally (the default state), when acquiring EDID, the device supports any color space that is
defined in the acquired EDID parameters. In case of a color space problem, using the Force
RGB mode may improve the colors of the image on the display.
To
Do the following:
Force the acquired
EDID to support only
RGB color space:
Press and hold the EDID SETUP button for a few seconds until all the output
LEDs flash together four times.
Continue to acquire the desired EDID.
This acquired EDID is then forced to support the RGB color space only.
Return to the normal
EDID mode:
Press and hold the EDID SETUP button for a few seconds until the output LEDs
flash together once.
Continue to acquire the desired EDID.
View the force RGB
activation status:
Power cycle the unit.
All output LEDs flash together once when in normal EDID mode, and four times
when in Force RGB mode.
