CONTROLS & CALIBRATION
ThecontrolsfortheI5311-DSShakerIncubatorincludepowertotheoven,temperaturesetting,
safetytemperatureovershoot setting and shakerspeed and shaking time. Inadditionthere is
adoor-openshakershut-offswitchand a chamber light switch.
- Main Power Switch - Thisswitch(illuminated GREEN when on)turnsthe power to theunit
OnandOff.
-Temperature Controller and Temperature Set – The controller has a 3-digit display for
displaying chambertemperature or setpoint information. UP andDown arrow pads areused
tochange the set pointand controller modeof operation. To enter theset point modeof
operation, press either the UPor DOWN arrowpad one time. The display willstart to blink,
goingfrom bright to dim. Whileblinking, the displayis showing theset point.Tochange the set
point, use the UPand DOWN arrow pads. If the arrow pads arenot pressed forfive (5) sec-
onds, thedisplay will stop blinkingandwill read the chambertemperature. Aftersettingtem-
perature, allowatleast one hour forthechambertemperature to stabilize and24hoursfor
optimumstabilization.
-Calibration-TheShakingIncubator is calibratedat 37C atthefactory. The unit can bere-
calibratedafterthechamber temperature has stabilizedatthe set point forseveralhours.
Suspendacertified reference thermometerin the chamber. Comparetheunitsdisplayto the
referencethermometer.Ifthereisanunacceptabledifference,putthecontrollerintocalibration
modeby pressing boththe UP andDOWN arrow pads at the same time until the two outside
decimalpoints begin to flash. While the decimalpoints are flashing, the display canbe cali-
bratedtomatch the reference thermometerbypressing the UP orDOWNarrow pads until the
displayreadsthe correct value.Allowtheshaker incubator to stabilizeagain, andrecalibrateif
necessary.

-Heating Indicator-Thisindicatorwillilluminate GREEN when the controlleriscallingforheat
fromtheheater. Thisindicatorwillbeoncontinuously while the oven heatsuptothesettem-

-Safety Thermostat-Thesafetythermostatlocatedonthe back of the unitismanuallysetand

failureoftheMainController that would allow temperaturetorisepastthe safety set point. If
thetemperaturerisesto the safety set point, theSafetytakes control of the heatingelement
andallowscontinued use of theincubatoruntil the problem canberesolved or service canbe
arranged.
-Safety Indicator-ThisindicatorwilillimunateREDwhen the Safety Thermostat isactivated.
Undernormaloperatingconditionsthis indicator should never beon.
-Chamber Light Switch-Thisswitchturns the chamber lightonand off when powerison.
-SHAKER CONTROLS-The shaker controls are also microprocessor based.
-RUN lamp-Thislampilluminateswhentheshakerisstartedand stays illuminated when the
shakerisrunning.
-Timer lamp-Thislamp is illuminated whentheshaker display isinthe time displaymode

-RPM lamp-Thislamp illuminates when theshakerdisplay is speed displaymodeshowing the
currentshakingspeed or showing theset shaking speed.
-Stop / Start-Thispad starts and stopsthe shaking mechanism andcauses the RUN lampto
beilluminated.
-Push to Shift / Turn Set Knob- This encoderprovides the followingmultiple functions:
•Itincreases and decreasesthe shaker speedsetting in 1 rpm increments from 20 rpm
to 300 rpm.
•Itincreases and decreasesthe run timesetting from 30seconds to 99minutes and 50
secondsand HOLD (Hld) forcontinuous operation. Timeis changed in 1second
incrementsto10minutesandthen10secondincrementsthereafter.
•Itshifts the shakerdisplay from timedisplay to speed display and back
-Shaker Display- This three digit display shows the shaker speed setting or shaker time
settingorremainingshakerruntimewhile counting down. It also shows:
•Hld -Whentheshakerissetforcontinuousun-timedrunning
•Opn -Whentheincubator door has beenopened, automatically stopping the shaking
motion(notethetimercontinues to count down butisnotdisplayed)
•End -When a timedshaking run hasended
•F60 / F50 -When the shakingincubator is firstpowered up indicatingthe line
frequencyofthepowerline.
-Door Open Switch - Thisswitch senses when the incubator shakerdoor is openand sends
asignalto the microprocessorwhichcauses the shaker tostop running as asafety measure.
However, inatimedrun, the timer willcontinuetocount down when the doorisopen. Closing

OPERATING THE LABNET I-5311-DS INCUBATOR SHAKER
Asadvisedin the installationsection,it is veryimportantthat the unitbelevel and placedon a
verysolid surface. When loading theplatforms, it isalso important to loadthese in abalanced
mannerortheunitcan vibrate and possibly walk. Shakingunbalancedloadsfor extensive
periodsmay also damagethe shaker.
Beforepoweringuptheunit, youshould first set the mechanical SafetyThermostatontheback
oftheunittoa temperature just aboveyourintendedoperatingtemperature or at max (setting
of10) this safetyis not needed.
Afteryoufirstpoweruptheunit you should notice the shaker displayfirstshowingdashesthen
thepowerinputline frequency (F60 or F50for60Hz or 50Hz) and thetemperaturecontroller
displayshowingsomerandom numbers and dotsblinking.
Theshakerdisplayandtemperaturedisplayshouldthensettle down with the shaker display
showingthelasttimethat was set (orHLd)forcontinuousoperation, and the temperature
displayshowingthechambertemperature.
Youmaynowsetthe desired operatingtemperature, the desired shakingspeedand the
desiredshakingtime (see Controls sectionof this manual). It isrecommended that you testall
loadsto be shaken aslow speed underobservation and then graduallyraise the speedto
insuretheload and unit arestable. The unit should alsobe allowed to equilibrateto the set
temperaturebeforeusing.
Oncethe temperature, shakingspeed and shakingtime are set,use the Stop/ Startpadto
initiateshaking. When shaking in the timed mode, theword End willbe displayed onthe
shakerdisplaywhen the shakingisdone. In timed modetheword Hld (hold)willbe displayed
ontheshaker display. The user may switchthe shaker display toshowthe shaking speed by
pressingthe“PushtoShift” knob.
Theusercanobservetheload being shaken through theglasswindowandcanalso turn on
the chamber light for additional visibility. The chamber light should not be left on for an
extended period as it adds heat to the chamber and may cause the chamber tempera-
ture to rise above the set point.
Theusermay open thechamberdoor at anytimeto gain accessthechamber.Ifthe shaker is
runningwhenthedoor is open, theshakerpowerwill be immediately cutcausingtheshaker to
slowandstop. Theshaker display will showOpnfor open. Shakingwillautomaticallyresume
whenthe door isclosed if thereis still timeremaining on theshaker run. Note: The clock
continuestocountdownwhenthedoor is open even though the shakerhasstopped.
CARE & MAINTENANCE
Noroutinemaintenanceisrequires for the electrical ormechanicalcomponentsofthe unit. The
incubatorexterior, interiorandshaking platform should be wipeddownperiodically with a soft
dampcloth with mild soap.Do not usechlorine-based bleach orabrasives. Any spills in the
incubator and/orontheshakingplatformsshouldbecleaned upimmediately. Be sure to
disconnect the power cord before cleaning or decontaminating the oven.
