Equipment.

PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS:
1. Someone shoul be within range of your voice or close enough to come to your ai when you work near
a battery.
2. Have plenty of fresh water an soap nearby in case the battery electrolyte contacts skin, clothing, or
eyes.
3. Wear complete eye protection an clothing protection. Avoi touching eyes while working near a
battery.
4. If the battery electrolyte contacts skin or clothing, wash imme iately with soap an water. If the
electrolyte enters the eye, imme iately floo the eye with running col water for at least ten (10)
minutes an get me ical attention imme iately.
5. Never smoke or allow a spark or flame in vicinity of a battery.
6. Be extra cautious to re uce risk of ropping a metal tool onto a battery. It might spark or short-circuit
the battery or other electric part that may cause an explosion.
7. Remove personal metal items such as rings, bracelets, necklaces, an watches when working with a
battery. A battery can pro uce a short-circuit current high enough to wel a ring or the like to metal,
causing a severe burn.
8. NEVER charge a frozen battery.

PREPARING TO CHARGE
1. If necessary to remove the battery connections, always remove groun e terminal from the battery
first. Make sure all loa s are isconnecte an unit is off, so as not to cause an arc.
2. Be sure the area aroun the battery is well ventilate while the battery is being charge .
3. When cleaning battery terminals, be careful to keep corrosion from coming in contact with eyes.
4. Stu y all the battery manufacturer’s specific precautions such as removing or not removing cell caps
while charging, recommen e rates of charge, an maintenance proce ures.
UNIT LOCATION
•Never place this unit irectly above the battery. Gases from the battery will corro e an amage
equipment. A seale maintenance free or valve regulate lea aci (VRLA) may be place below this
equipment.
•Never allow the battery electrolyte to rip on this unit when rea ing the specific gravity or filling the
battery.
•Do not operate this unit in a close -in area or restrict ventilation in any way.
•Do not set a battery on top of this unit.
DC CONNECTION PRECAUTIONS
Connect an isconnect DC output cables only after setting all of this unit's switches to off position an
removing AC input supply.
GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS
This battery charger shoul be connecte to a groun e , metal, permanent wiring system; or an equipment
groun ing con uctor shoul be run with circuit con uctors an connecte to equipment-groun ing terminal or
lea on battery charger. Connections to battery shoul comply with all local co es an or inances.

RECEIVING INSTRUCTIONS
Unpacking an Inspection: Examine the shipping crate upon arrival. If there is obvious amage, escribe on
the receiving ocuments. Within a few ays after elivery, the equipment shoul be uncrate an carefully
inspecte for hi en amages. When removing packaging material, be careful not to iscar any equipment,
parts, or manuals. If any amage is etecte you shoul :
1. File a claim with the carrier within five (5) ays.
2. Sen a copy of the claim to La Marche Mfg. Co.
3. Call La Marche Mfg. For a RETURN MATERIAL AUTHORIZATION NUMBER.
Failure to properly file a claim for shipping damages, or provide a copy of the claim to La Marche
Mfg , may void warranty service for any physical damages reported for repair

The Mo el A70B is a microprocessor controlle in ustrial battery charger for use on forklift an electric vehicle
batteries. It is esigne to recharge a battery of the proper amp-hour capacity in eight hours.
The Mo el A70B features:

THEORY OF OPERATION & INDICATORS
FRONT PANEL
The front panel consists of a printe wiring boar which is connecte to a microprocessor boar through a
keye 26 pin ribbon cable.
The panel has a igital isplay, select button, equalize button, on/off switch an eight (8) LED lamps.
The igital isplay in icates Output Amps, Output Voltage, Ampere Hours Returne , an Elapse Time
Charging.
A "Push to Select” button an associate in icator lights allow you to rea any one of the four (4) operating
parameters on the igital isplay. After powering up the unit an connecting the battery, the igital isplay
in icates the output amperage of the charger; push the "Select” button once an the output voltage will be
isplaye . Push the "Select” button a secon time an the Amp Hours Returne will be isplaye .
NOTE: The Charger must be charging the battery for 1 minute to obtain this rea ing; the amp hours are
up ate every minute. A thir push of the button shows the elapse charging time in hours/minutes.
A "Push to Equalize” button when pushe allows the charger to charge six (6) a itional hours after the 80%
charge is reache .
NOTE: The equalize button can also be use to start the charger even if a battery is ischarge below 1.6
Vpc. Caution must be use when using this feature to start the charger because the initial battery voltage
sensing is being isable an the wrong battery coul be being connecte .
An "On/Off” switch allows you to turn off the charger when isconnecting the battery uring the charge cycle.
The lamps are as follows:
* "On Charge" Lamp
This in icates after the charger has successfully complete the autostart cycle an the input contactor has
close .
* "80%/Complete" Lamp
This (LED) in icator will flash when the battery voltage reaches 2.40 volts per cell. This means the battery is
80% charge . The 3 (normal) or 6 (equalize) hour timer is activate . This (LED) also gives you valuable
information after the charger has complete its charge cycle an the ("On Charge") LED is off.
A. Flashing at one secon intervals in icates the electronic timer has complete its normal
cycle an the battery is fully charge .
B. Rapi flashing in icates a low output current shutoff. Usually this in icates a fully
charge battery.
C. Flashing at five secon intervals in icates a fully charge battery was connecte to the
charger an it turne off after charging for 15 minutes. The isplay will also alternate
between time (15 minutes) an voltage.
* "Equalize" Lamp
Lamp in icates when the equalize mo e is activate by the equalize switch.
* "Failure" Lamp
The "FAILURE” lamp is a summary alarm. When the failure light illuminates, the number on the igital isplay
in icates the type of failure. See below:

NOTE: CODE 100 INDICATES DEFECTIVE S2A-122A PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD OR S2A-123 OR
WRONG AC VOLTAGE FROM THE CONTROL TRANSFORMER.
The Mo el A70B charger accomplishes its charge cycle completely automatically without the use of any moving
parts except for the input AC contactor.
An SCR regulator controls the charge rate so that the charger puts out near maximum output current up to the
gassing point of the battery, then automatically re uces the output current own to a trickle charge on a taper
curve as the battery comes up to full charge. The shape of this tapering curve is pro uce by the software in
the microprocessor. The voltage of the battery is continuously sense by the microprocessor which calculates
the changes in control that are necessary to properly charge the battery. These new up ates are sent to the
unit's SCR's at a rate of approximately 100 times per secon .
The charger provi es automatic AC input line compensation. This eliminates the nee for a justing taps to
match the input line voltage. The automatic compensation also eliminates charging problems that arise from a
varying input line when charging continually or for two or three shift operations.
The unit is self-protecting when subjecte to abnormal overloa ing con itions. The current limiting feature
limits the output current to not more than 105% of the output rating of the charger.
It shoul not be necessary to make any a justments to this charger. Shoul any a justments be necessary, a
factory service representative shoul be contacte .
Because of the stability of esign, the unit nee s no perio ic a justment. This, along with the rugge
construction an conservatively rate components, insures long life an trouble-free operation.
The automatic start/stop circuitry senses when a battery is connecte an then slowly ramps the output current
up to start the charge. If the ischarge battery is not the correct number of cells, the unit will not start an
the igital isplay will in icate number "0003".
The automatic start/stop feature senses the connection of a battery an etermines if it is in the proper range,
1.6 volts per cell to 2.45 volts per cell. It also etermines if AC input line voltage is in the proper range. The
high AC input voltage limit is 10%, the low AC input voltage limit is -15% of nominal. Five secon s after both
of these con itions have been met, the AC input contactor will close. If the recommen e proce ure is not
followe an the DC output connector is isconnecte from the battery, the AC input contactor will open within
five secon s.
An on/off switch is provi e to e-energize the charger. Be sure to turn this switch off before isconnecting
the battery uring the charge cycle.
With the normal/equalize switch in the normal mo e, the rate of change program begins after the charger is
energize . The rate program operates by measuring the battery current continuously uring the charge cycle
an storing it. As new battery, current information is receive , the ifference between the ol an new values
is calculate to etermine the rate of change uring the interval. This rate is then compare against a
reference an the ecision is ma e whether or not to terminate the charge cycle.

In the normal mo e, the charger will charge the battery for 3 hours after the 80% point is reache (unless the
rate program terminates the charge first) or the battery is isconnecte . In the equalize mo e, a 6 hour timer
is initiate after the 80% point is reache .
A momentary equalize switch is provi e so that equalizing may be selecte to give a 6 hour charge after the
80% point is reache . Equalizing shoul be one perio ically as recommen e by battery manufacturer. This
switch, when activate , will start the equalize charge mo e for that cycle only. After completion of the cycle,
the charger will automatically be reset to the "normal" mo e.
When the 80% point is reache , the 80% charge lamp will flash at a one secon rate. At this point, the timer
in the microprocessor is set for 3 or 6 hours epen ing on whether or not the equalize mo e is active. The
charger will continue the trickle rate until the microprocessor control turns unit completely off. When a charging
cycle is complete correctly, the 80%/Complete light will in icate until the battery is unplugge . Unplugging a
charge (charge complete light "On") battery will place the unit back in the autostart mo e.
Disconnecting the output connector while a battery is being charged is not recommended If the
battery is isconnecte uring a charge cycle, the complete light will not light, all timers will reset, an the unit
will go into the autostart mo e.
If the battery never reaches the 80% charge point ( ue to battery failure), the unit will turn off in 12 hours
from the overri e timer. The complete light will not light. The "ON CHARGE" light will turn off, the "FAILURE"
lamp will light an the isplay will in icate "0004." If this occurs, the unit will not autostart. The on/off switch
will have to be turne off to reset the lights an turne back on to initiate the autostart mo e. If the AC input
voltage goes below the AC voltage set point, the unit will stop an the failure lamp will light. When the AC is
restore , the unit will turn on again an resume the charge where is left off. A high voltage con ition will also
cause the failure light to come on. (0001 - Low AC voltage, 0002 - High AC voltage)
After starting, the microprocessor imme iately activates the 12 hour overri e timer. This timer is in epen ent
of battery con itions an overri es all other timing functions. The overri e timer will terminate the charge in
the event that the rate control or the 80% timing control oes not terminate the charge before the maximum
time limit of 12 hours is reache .
If the AC input line fails uring the charge cycle, all internal time registers will hol their count until the power
returns. The cycle will then resume from where it left off. The "FAILURE" lamp will light if this con ition is
reache an , epen ing on a low or high AC line, a "0001" (low) or "0002" (high) will in icate on the isplay.
Optional remote start inputs can be provi e so that the charger start up an timer initiation may be controlle
from elsewhere. The battery an "Autostart" con itions must, however, still be met.
A start up elay (measure from the time of vali battery connection) can be pre-selecte by a printe circuit
boar switch for 0,1,4, or 8 hours. This elay will operate both in the normal or equalize mo es. When the
start up elay is active, the "ON CHARGE" light will flash at a one secon rate until the elay is complete an
the igital isplay will show how much time remains until the charger will turn on. Upon completion of the
elay, the charger will perform the "Autostart" function.
A high DC current, high DC voltage feature is incorporate in the charge control system. If an unusually high
DC current occurs simultaneously with a high voltage con ition as a result of a charger malfunction, the high
current feature will terminate the charge cycle an turn on the "FAILURE" light. A "0005" will in icate on the
igital isplay. In this mo e the charger will not restart again unless the on/off switch is toggle to the "off"
an then to the "on" position. If the high current failure still exists the charger will again turn off. At this
point, a factory service representative should be contacted

INSTALLATION
The LaMarche Mo el A70B charger is esigne to operate on a specific type of battery with a specifie number
of cells. The nameplate on the charger in icates the type an number of cells require . When connecting the
DC output cables to the battery, be certain the positive terminal of the charger is connecte to the positive
battery terminal, an the negative terminal is connecte to the negative of the battery. A groun ing connection
is also provi e for complete protection. Once properly installe , the unit shoul automatically complete its
charge cycle every time it is connecte to a ischarge battery. Install the unit so that the flow of air through
the ventilators is vertical an not obstructe .
A terminal block is provi e within the unit for the AC input connections. Before connecting the AC input
cable, check the line power with that specifie on the nameplate of the unit. Units with multiple AC input
units have taps insi e which must be set for the proper AC setting. (See tap car insi e oor.) The AC input
current specifie on the nameplate is for rate output.
Input AC breakers must be size for the overloa or current limiting point of the charger, which is 130% of the
rate nameplate value.
OPERATION
After the installation has been complete , the Mo el A70B is rea y for operation. Be sure that the battery
charger is of the correct type for the battery that is to be charge .
CAREFULLY READ AND ADHERE TO ALL BATTERY AND BATTERY CHARGER INSTRUCTIONS AND
SAFETY WARNINGS
To operate the charger, it is only necessary to turn on the on/off switch an connect a battery. After the on/off
switch is place in the "on” position an prior to the battery connection, all of the LED’s on the front panel will
flash until a battery is connecte . This is the lamp test mo e. The igital isplay will hol four (4) eight's
("8888") until the proper battery is connecte to the charger. When the battery is finally connecte , the "ON
CHARGE" lamp will light an the igital isplay will in icate a slow increase in output current. The charger will
automatically start to charge the battery at some rate up to its maximum capacity epen ing upon the state of
charge of the battery.
START-UP
A. Turn the on/off switch to the "on" position. Apply AC voltage to the units input terminals. Four (4) eight's
("8888") will flash on the isplay.
B. To select the equalize charge mo e, activate the "EQUALIZE" switch on the front panel. If the equalize
mo e is selecte , the "EQUALIZE" LED will be on.
C. If a time elay before start up is require , the " ip" switch (S1) on the main circuit boar may be
programme . The " ip” switch has eight switches marke "1 through 8” mounte in a package which looks
similar to an integrate circuit. Switches 1 an 2 are use to program the elaye start time. Switch settings
for the various start elays are shown in Figure 1. To initialize a new switch setting, the on/off switch must be
turne "off" an then "on" again.
D. DO NOT change switches 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8. These have been factory set. (See P25-LA70BDSS-1 . Page 1)
E. To select a constant current finish charge mo e, constant voltage finish rate or exten e cable lengths, the
ip switch (S2) on the S2A-122A circuit boar can be re-programme . The switches are factory set for a 10
foot cable length an a 10% constant current finish charge. Do not change switches 6, 7, an 8. (See P25-
LA70BDSS-1 , Page 2)

F. Connect the battery to the charger. After a 5 secon elay, which assures proper battery connection, the AC
contactor shoul close an the on charge light shoul turn on. The battery charger shoul start to charge,
showing output amps on the igital isplay. This completes the "Autostart” sequence. If a battery with the
wrong number of cells is connecte or the AC input line voltage is not within the operating range, the unit will
not start an the "FAILURE" light will be on. The igital isplay will in icate the cause of failure. This
con ition will also occur if the battery being connecte is ischarge so eeply that the open terminal voltage
will not come up to the 1.6 volts/cell require to initiate the start cycle.
NOTE: To isable this feature push the equalize button. Caution: Make sure a battery with the correct
number of cells is connecte to the charger.
G. If the A70B has been programme for a "start elay” other than 0 hours, the "ON CHARGE” light will flash
at a one secon rate an the igital isplay will in icate time remaining until charger cycle begins. After the
"start elay” is finishe , the unit will perform an autostart sequence; if the battery is still connecte , the "ON
CHARGE” lamp will light without flashing. If the battery is isconnecte uring "start elay", the A70B will reset
an the "start elay" will begin over again once the battery is reconnecte .
H. When the "80% CHARGE” point is reache in the charge cycle, the "80%/COMPLETE" light will flash. There
will be an a itional 3 hours (6 hours in the equalize mo e) of charge after this point is reache .
I. When the charge cycle is complete , the charge "80%/COMPLETE" light will flash at one-secon intervals
an the "ON CHARGE" lamp will turn off. Rapi flashing of 80% light in icates a low current shutoff. Usually
this in icates the battery is fully charge . If the charger turns off on rate, the charge "80% COMPLETE” light
will turn on without flashing an the "ON CHARGE" light will turn off.
J. If for some reason the AC input voltage falls below the factory set limit (about 85%), the "FAILURE” light
will turn on an the battery charger will turn off. The isplay will in icate number "0001". During this interval,
the time registers in the microprocessor are hel at their present count. When the AC has returne to normal,
the charge cycle resumes where it left off. Co e "0002" in icates high AC voltage.
K. If for some reason the normal, equalize, or rate timers o not terminate the charge cycle in less than 12
hours, the overri e timer will time out, shut own the charger an turn on the "FAILURE" light. The isplay will
in icate number "0004".
L. If for some reason, the unit output current excee s 105% of its output, simultaneous with high DC voltage,
an in epen ent software shut own will stop the charger. The isplay will in icate number "0005." In this
con ition, the lamps will not up ate an the unit will not turn back on until the on/off switch has been toggle .
The A70B will reset back to the autostart mo e when the battery is isconnecte , or when the on/off switch is
turne "off” an then "on" again. In the autostart mo e, four (4) eight's ("8888") will be hel on the isplay.
NOTE: TURN THE ON/OFF SWITCH TO THE OFF POSITION BEFORE DISCONNECTING THE
BATTERY DURING A CHARGE CYCLE
M. If the battery current rises approximately 10% uring the charge cycle, the charger will turn off an the
isplay will in icate number 0006.
N. If a fully-charge battery is connecte , the charger will turn off in fifteen (15) minutes an the complete
light will flash at a 5-secon interval. The isplay will flash elapse time of charge an DC voltage alternately.
To bypass this function, push the equalize switch an the unit will charge the battery for up to six (6) a itional
hours.

INSTRUCTIONS
Before troubleshooting unit, check for shipping amage. (i.e. broken wires, loose connections, etc.)
Quick-Check A70B Trouble Analysis
Problem: Blown AC input fuse
1. Check AC input voltage with tap setting on power transformer an control transformer. If AC input
an tap setting agree, see step #2.
2. Check AC input current raw after replacing blown AC fuse. NOTE: If AC fuse clears as soon as
the AC contactor pulls in, go to STEP #5. On three (3) phase units, if the AC current is not
approximately equal, check the AC voltage input to the S2A-123 printe circuit boar . Connector
#1, 4-5, 5-6, 6-4 shoul be 30 Vac. - 60 Vac. If this voltage is not there, retrace the wiring back to
the SCR/Dio e mo ules. If voltage is there, continue to step #3.
3. Check the AC voltage output on the S2A-123 printe circuit boar , Connector #2, 4-1, 4-2, 4-3.
Voltages must be approximately equal or greater than 5 Vac. If it is not greater than 5 Vac.,
replace the S2A-123 printe circuit boar .
4. Connect charger to ischarge battery, check output voltage an voltage across charger shunt bar.
If output voltage is below 2.3 Vpc., the voltage across shunt must not excee 97mV. If it is over
97mV, a just P4 on the S2A-122A printe circuit boar counterclockwise which lowers the output
until 97mV across the shunt bar is in icate .
5. If AC input fuse clears when the AC contactor pulls in make sure the correct AC fuses are being
use , time elay fuses. If the correct AC fuses are being use , isconnect J3 connector from the
S2A-122A printe circuit boar .
6. Replace blown AC fuse, turn on AC power. (If fuse is goo , efective S2A-122A p.c. boar .) If fuse

7. Separate secon ary lea s from P.T. to SCR/Dio e mo ules. If fuse still clears, problem is in the
(P.T.) power transformer. If fuse is goo , problem coul be in the SCR/Dio e mo ule.

NOTE: Blown printe circuit boar s, fuses or loose printe circuit boar s fuses coul cause an out of phase
con ition. (Blowing AC input fuses) If a blown printe circuit boar fuse is foun , a wire on the gate lea of
the SCR/Dio e mo ule coul be isconnecte or a efective SCR/Dio e mo ule coul exist.
Problem: Blown DC fuse
1. Make sure the correct type of fuse is being use .
2. Check all connections to DC fuse to be certain they are tight.
3. Check polarity of output cables, output connector, SCR/Dio es mo ule an io e SD4 for shorts.
Problem: Blown control transformer fuse CTF1
1. Defective contactor (shorte coil)
2. Control taps set wrong on control transformer.
3. Defective control transformer.

X3 - X4 = 11Vac.

Problem: Complete "ON" but battery not charged
1. Recor all rea ings on igital isplay boar before isconnecting battery. Check status of complete
light.
2. Check battery for efective cells.

Problem: Contactor does not pull in
1. Check AC input voltage an fuses.
2. Check DC voltage at DC output terminals (battery connecte ).
3. Check AC voltage output on control transformer.
4. If 120 Vac. is present at AC contactor coil, contactor may be efective.
5. If 120Vac. is not present, isconnect 15 pin connector from the S2A-122A printe circuit boar , an
jump pin #10 an pin #11 together. If AC contactor pulls in, efective S2A-122A printe circuit
boar .
Problem: Failure light on CODE 0001 OR 0002
1. Check AC input voltage must be +/- 15% of nominal AC voltage for the low AC sensing point, +/-
10% for the high AC sensing point.
2. Check taps on power an control transformer.
3. Check AC contactor.
4. Check voltages on the secon ary si e of the control transformer.
5. Loose connections on the control transformer.
Problem: Failure light on CODE 0003
1. Check battery for correct number of cells.
2. Check for efective or shorte cells in battery.
3. Open circuit battery voltage must be above 1.6Vpc..
4. Defective S2A-122A Drive Boar .

Problem: Failure light CODE 0006
1. Check for efective or shorte cells in battery.
2. Check finish rate of charger.
Problem: Fuses, battery, AC voltage and taps okay, but no indication on display board
Check voltage across capacitor C-1 on S2A-122A rive boar . Voltage shoul be approximately 12V c., if
voltage is zero replace both the S2A-122A & S2A-146 "p.c." boar s. If 12 volts is present, replace the S2A-146
boar .
TROUBLESHOOTING
SCR/DIODE MODULES A70B - 3 PHASE
1. Disconnect power transformer secon ary wire from top connection of mo ule.
2. Disconnect positive buss bar from mo ule.
3. Disconnect negative buss bar from mo ule.
4. Disconnect 6 pin connector from terminal J3 on S2A-122A Assembly.
5. Measure resistance from top terminal of mo ule to center - terminal must rea high resistance.
Reverse lea s must rea high resistance.
6. Measure resistance from top terminal of mo ule to bottom - terminal must rea high resistance
one way; low resistance when you reverse lea s.

2. Make sure all connections are tight.

magnetics an power io es on a parts replacement basis only for nine (9) more years un er normal use.
Any part or parts of the equipment (except fuses, DC connectors an other wear-relate items) that prove efective within
a one (1) year perio shall be replace without charge provi ing such efect, in our opinion, is ue to faulty material or
workmanship an not cause by tampering, abuse, misapplication or improper installation. Magnetics are warrante for ten
(10) years after ate of purchase. During the last nine (9) years of this ten (10) year warranty perio , the warranty covers
parts replacement only, an no labor or other services are provi e by La Marche, nor is La Marche obligate to reimburse
the owner or any other person for work performe .
Shoul a piece of equipment require major component replacement or repair uring the first year of the warranty perio ,
these can be han le in one of two ways:
1. The equipment can be returne to the La Marche factory to have the inspections, parts replacements
an testing performe by factory personnel. Shoul it be necessary to return a piece of equipment or
parts to the factory, the customer or sales representative must obtain authorization from the factory.
If upon inspection at the factory, the efect was ue to faulty material or workmanship, all repairs will
be ma e at no cost to the customer uring the first year. Transportation charges or uties shall be
borne by purchaser.
2. If the purchaser elects not to return the equipment to the factory an wishes a factory service
representative to make a justments an /or repairs at the equipment location, La Marche's fiel service
