Thischaptercontainsthesafetyinforationthatyouustbefailiarwith.
Powercordsandpoweradapters
Useonlythepowercordsandpoweradapterssuppliedbytheproductanufacturer.Donotusetheac
powercordforotherdevices.
Thepowercordsshallbesafetyapproved.ForGerany,itshallbeH05VV-F,3G,0.752,orbetter.For
othercountries,thesuitabletypesshallbeusedaccordingly.
Neverwrapapowercordaroundapoweradapterorotherobject.Doingsocanstressthecordinwaysthat
cancausethecordtofray,crack,orcrip.Thiscanpresentasafetyhazard.
Alwaysroutepowercordssothattheywillnotbewalkedon,trippedover,orpinchedbyobjects.
Protectpowercordandpoweradaptersfroliquids.Forinstance,donotleaveyourpowercordorpower
adapternearsinks,tubs,toilets,oronfloorsthatarecleanedwithliquidcleansers.Liquidscancausea
shortcircuit,particularlyifthepowercordorpoweradapterhasbeenstressedbyisuse.Liquidsalsocan
causegradualcorrosionofpowercordterinalsand/ortheconnectorterinalsonapoweradapter,
whichcaneventuallyresultinoverheating.
Ensurethatallpowercordconnectorsaresecurelyandcopletelypluggedintoreceptacles.
Donotuseanypoweradapterthatshowscorrosionattheacinputpinsorshowssignsofoverheating(such
asdeforedplastic)attheacinputoranywhereonthepoweradapter.
Donotuseanypowercordswheretheelectricalcontactsoneitherendshowsignsofcorrosionor
overheatingorwherethepowercordappearstohavebeendaagedinanyway.
Generalsafety
Followtheserulestoensuregeneralsafety:
•Observegoodhousekeepingintheareaoftheachinesduringandafteraintenance.
•Whenliftinganyheavyobject:
1.Ensureyoucanstandsafelywithoutslipping.
2.Distributetheweightoftheobjectequallybetweenyourfeet.
3.Useaslowliftingforce.Neverovesuddenlyortwistwhenyouattepttolift.
4.Liftbystandingorbypushingupwithyourleguscles;thisactionreovesthestrainfrothe
usclesinyourback.
Attention:
Donotattepttoliftanyobjectsthatweighorethan16kg(35lb)orobjectsthatyouthinkare
tooheavyforyou.
•Donotperforanyactionthatcauseshazardstothecustoer,orthatakestheequipentunsafe.
•Beforeyoustarttheachine,ensurethatotherservicerepresentativesandthecustoer'spersonnelare
notinahazardousposition.

•Placereovedcoversandotherpartsinasafeplace,awayfroallpersonnel,whileyouareservicing
theachine.
•Keepyourtoolcaseawayfrowalkareassothatotherpeoplewillnottripoverit.
•Donotwearlooseclothingthatcanbetrappedintheovingpartsofaachine.Ensurethatyoursleeves
arefastenedorrolledupaboveyourelbows.Ifyourhairislong,fastenit.
•Inserttheendsofyournecktieorscarfinsideclothingorfastenitwithanonconductiveclip,approxiately
8centieters(3inches)frotheend.
•Donotwearjewelry,chains,etal-fraeeyeglasses,oretalfastenersforyourclothing.
Remember:Metalobjectsaregoodelectricalconductors.
•Wearsafetyglasseswhenyouare:haering,drilling,soldering,cuttingwire,attachingsprings,using
solvents,orworkinginanyotherconditionsthatightbehazardoustoyoureyes.
•Afterservice,reinstallallsafetyshields,guards,labels,andgroundwires.Replaceanysafetydevice
thatiswornordefective.
•Reinstallallcoverscorrectlybeforereturningtheachinetothecustoer.
CAUTION:
Hazardousmovingparts.Keepfingersandotherbodypartsaway.
CAUTION:
Beforeyouopenthecomputercover,turnoffthecomputerandwaitseveralminutesuntilthe
computeriscool.
Electricalsafety
CAUTION:
Electricalcurrentfrompower,telephone,andcommunicationcablescanbehazardous.Toavoid
personalinjuryorequipmentdamage,disconnecttheattachedpowercords,telecommunication
systems,networks,andmodemsbeforeyouopenthecomputercovers,unlessinstructedotherwise
intheinstallationandconfigurationprocedures.
Observethefollowingruleswhenworkingonelectricalequipent.
Important:Useonlyapprovedtoolsandtestequipent.Soehandtoolshavehandlescoveredwithasoft
aterialthatdoesnotinsulateyouwhenworkingwithliveelectricalcurrents.Manycustoershave,near
theirequipent,rubberflooratsthatcontainsallconductivefiberstodecreaseelectrostaticdischarges.
Donotusethistypeofattoprotectyourselffroelectricalshock.

•Findtherooeergencypower-off(EPO)switch,disconnectingswitch,orelectricaloutlet.Ifanelectrical
accidentoccurs,youcanthenoperatetheswitchorunplugthepowercordquickly.
•Donotworkaloneunderhazardousconditionsornearequipentthathashazardousvoltages.
•Disconnectallpowerbefore:
–Perforingaechanicalinspection
–Workingnearpowersupplies
–ReovingorinstallingFieldReplaceableUnits(FRUs)
•Beforeyoustarttoworkontheachine,unplugthepowercord.Ifyoucannotunplugit,poweroffthe
wallboxthatsuppliespowertotheachineandlockthewallboxintheoffposition.
•Ifyouneedtoworkonaachinethathasexposedelectricalcircuits,observethefollowingprecautions:
–Ensurethatanotherperson,failiarwiththepower-offcontrols,isnearyou.
Remember:Anotherpersonustbetheretoswitchoffthepower,ifnecessary.
–Useonlyonehandwhenworkingwithpowered-onelectricalequipent;keeptheotherhandinyour
pocketorbehindyourback.
Remember:Thereustbeacopletecircuittocauseelectricalshock.Byobservingtheaboverule,
youaypreventacurrentfropassingthroughyourbody.
–Whenusingatester,setthecontrolscorrectlyandusetheapprovedprobeleadsandaccessoriesfor
thattester.
–Standonsuitablerubberats(obtainedlocally,ifnecessary)toinsulateyoufrogroundssuchas
etalfloorstripsandachinefraes.
Observethespecialsafetyprecautionswhenyouworkwithveryhighvoltages;theseinstructionsarein
thesafetysectionsofaintenanceinforation.Useextreecarewheneasuringhighvoltages.
•Regularlyinspectandaintainyourelectricalhandtoolsforsafeoperationalcondition.
•Donotusewornorbrokentoolsandtesters.
•Neverassumethatpowerhasbeendisconnectedfroacircuit.First,checkthatithasbeenpowered-off.
•Alwayslookcarefullyforpossiblehazardsinyourworkarea.Exaplesofthesehazardsareoistfloors,
nongroundedpowerextensioncables,powersurges,andissingsafetygrounds.
•Donottouchliveelectricalcircuitswiththereflectivesurfaceofaplasticdentalirror.Thesurfaceis
conductive;suchtouchingcancausepersonalinjuryandachinedaage.
•Donotservicethefollowingpartswiththepoweronwhentheyarereovedfrotheirnoraloperating
placesinaachine:
–Powersupplyunits
–Pups
–Blowersandfans
–Motorgenerators
andsiilarunits.(Thispracticeensurescorrectgroundingoftheunits.)
•Ifanelectricalaccidentoccurs:
–Usecaution;donotbecoeavictiyourself.
–Switchoffpower.
–Sendanotherpersontogetedicalaid.

Safetyinspectionguide
Theintentofthisinspectionguideistoassistyouinidentifyingpotentiallyunsafeconditionsonthese
products.Eachachine,asitwasdesignedandbuilt,hadrequiredsafetyitesinstalledtoprotectusers
andservicepersonnelfroinjury.Thisguideaddressesonlythoseites.However,goodjudgentshould
beusedtoidentifypotentialsafetyhazardsduetoattachentoffeaturesoroptionsnotcoveredbythis
inspectionguide.
Ifanyunsafeconditionsarepresent,youustdeterinehowserioustheapparenthazardcouldbeand
whetheryoucancontinuewithoutfirstcorrectingtheproble.
Considertheseconditionsandthesafetyhazardstheypresent:
•Electricalhazards,especiallypriarypower(priaryvoltageonthefraecancauseseriousorfatal
electricalshock).
•Explosivehazards,suchasadaagedCRTfaceorbulgingcapacitor
•Mechanicalhazards,suchaslooseorissinghardware
Theguideconsistsofaseriesofstepspresentedinachecklist.Beginthecheckswiththepoweroff,and
thepowercorddisconnected.
Checklist:
1.Checkexteriorcoversfordaage(loose,broken,orsharpedges).
2.Power-offthecoputer.Disconnectthepowercord.
3.Checkthepowercordfor:
a.Athird-wiregroundconnectoringoodcondition.Useaetertoeasurethird-wireground
continuityfor0.1ohorlessbetweentheexternalgroundpinandfraeground.
b.Thepowercordshouldbetheappropriatetypeasspecifiedinthepartslistings.
c.Insulationustnotbefrayedorworn.
4.Reovethecover.
5.Checkforanyobviousalterations.Usegoodjudgentastothesafetyofanyalterations.
6.Checkinsidetheunitforanyobviousunsafeconditions,suchasetalfilings,containation,wateror
otherliquids,orsignsoffireorsokedaage.
7.Checkforworn,frayed,orpinchedcables.
8.Checkthatthepower-supplycoverfasteners(screwsorrivets)havenotbeenreovedortaperedwith.
Handlingelectrostaticdischarge-sensitivedevices
Anycoputerpartcontainingtransistorsorintegratedcircuits(ICs)shouldbeconsideredsensitiveto
electrostaticdischarge(ESD).ESDdaagecanoccurwhenthereisadifferenceinchargebetweenobjects.
ToprotectagainstESDdaage,equalizethechargebetweenobjects.Then,theachine,thepart,the
workat,andthepersonhandlingthepartareallatthesaecharge.
Notes:
1.Useproduct-specificESDprocedureswhentheyexceedtherequireentsnotedhere.
2.MakesurethattheESDprotectivedevicesyouusehavebeencertified(ISO9000)asfullyeffective.
WhenhandlingESD-sensitiveparts:
•Keepthepartsinprotectivepackagesuntiltheyareinsertedintotheproduct.
•Avoidcontactwithotherpeoplewhilehandlingthepart.

•Wearagroundedwriststrapagainstyourskintoeliinatestaticonyourbody.
•Preventthepartfrotouchingyourclothing.Mostclothingisinsulativeandretainsachargeeven
whenyouarewearingawriststrap.
•Usetheblacksideofagroundedworkattoprovideastatic-freeworksurface.Theatisespecially
usefulwhenhandlingESD-sensitivedevices.
•Selectagroundingsyste,suchasthoselistedbelow,toprovideprotectionthateetsthespecific
servicerequireent.
Note:TheuseofagroundingsysteisdesirablebutnotrequiredtoprotectagainstESDdaage.
–AttachtheESDgroundcliptoanyfraeground,groundbraid,orgreen-wireground.
–UseanESDcoongroundorreferencepointwhenworkingonadouble-insulatedor
battery-operatedsyste.Youcanusecoaxorconnector-outsideshellsonthesesystes.
–Usetheroundground-prongoftheacplugonac-operatedcoputers.
Groundingrequirements
Electricalgroundingofthecoputerisrequiredforoperatorsafetyandcorrectsystefunction.Proper
