Chapter 1. afety information
This hapter presents the following safety information that you need to be familiar with before you servi e a
Lenovo notebook omputer.
General safety
Follow these rules to ensure general safety:
• Observe good housekeeping in the area of the ma hines during and after maintenan e.
• When lifting any heavy obje t:
1. Make sure that you an stand safely without slipping.
2. Distribute the weight of the obje t equally between your feet.
3. Use a slow lifting for e. Never move suddenly or twist when you attempt to lift.
4. Lift by standing or by pushing up with your leg mus les; this a tion removes the strain from the
mus les in your ba k. Do not attempt to lift any object that weighs more than 16 kg (35 lb) or that you
think is too heavy for you.
• Do not perform any a tion that auses hazards to the ustomer, or that makes the equipment unsafe.
• Before you start the ma hine, make sure that other servi e te hni ians and the ustomer's personnel are
not in a hazardous position.
• Pla e removed overs and other parts in a safe pla e, away from all personnel, while you are servi ing the
ma hine.
• Keep your tool ase away from walk areas so that other people will not trip over it.
• Do not wear loose lothing that an be trapped in the moving parts of a ma hine. Make sure that your
sleeves are fastened or rolled up above your elbows. If your hair is long, fasten it.
• Insert the ends of your ne ktie or s arf inside lothing or fasten it with a non- ondu tive lip, about 8
entimeters (3 in hes) from the end.
• Do not wear jewelry, hains, metal-frame eyeglasses, or metal fasteners for your lothing.
Attention: Metal obje ts are good ele tri al ondu tors.
• Wear safety glasses when you are hammering, drilling, soldering, utting wire, atta hing springs, using
solvents, or working in any other onditions that might be hazardous to your eyes.
• After servi e, reinstall all safety shields, guards, labels, and ground wires. Repla e any safety devi e that
is worn or defe tive.
• Reinstall all overs orre tly before returning the ma hine to the ustomer.
• Fan louvers on the ma hine help to prevent overheating of internal omponents. Do not obstru t fan
louvers or over them with labels or sti kers.
Electrical safety
Observe the following rules when working on ele tri al equipment.
Important: Use only approved tools and test equipment. Some hand tools have handles overed with a
soft material that does not insulate you when working with live ele tri al urrents. Many ustomers have,
near their equipment, rubber floor mats that ontain small ondu tive fibers to de rease ele trostati
dis harges. Do not use this type of mat to prote t yourself from ele tri al sho k.
• Find the room emergen y power-off (EPO) swit h, dis onne ting swit h, or ele tri al outlet. If an ele tri al
a ident o urs, you an then operate the swit h or unplug the power ord qui kly.
• Do not work alone under hazardous onditions or near equipment that has hazardous voltages.
• Dis onne t all power before:
– Performing a me hani al inspe tion
– Working near power supplies

– Removing or installing main units
• Before you start to work on the ma hine, unplug the power ord. If you annot unplug it, ask the ustomer
to power-off the wall box that supplies power to the ma hine, and to lo k the wall box in the off position.
• If you need to work on a ma hine that has e posed ele tri al ir uits, observe the following pre autions:
–Ensure that another person, familiar with the power-off ontrols, is near you.
Attention: Another person must be there to swit h off the power, if ne essary.
– Use only one hand when working with powered-on ele tri al equipment; keep the other hand in your
po ket or behind your ba k.
Attention: An ele tri al sho k an o ur only when there is a omplete ir uit. By observing the above
rule, you may prevent a urrent from passing through your body.
– When using testers, set the ontrols orre tly and use the approved probe leads and a essories for
that tester.
– Stand on suitable rubber mats (obtained lo ally, if ne essary) to insulate you from grounds su h as
metal floor strips and ma hine frames.
Observe the spe ial safety pre autions when you work with very high voltages; Instru tions for these
pre autions are in the safety se tions of maintenan e information. Use extreme are when measuring high
voltages.
• Regularly inspe t and maintain your ele tri al hand tools for safe operational ondition.
• Do not use worn or broken tools and testers.
•Never assume that power has been dis onne ted from a ir uit. First, check that it has been powered off.
• Always look arefully for possible hazards in your work area. Examples of these hazards are moist floors,
non-grounded power extension ables, power surges, and missing safety grounds.
• Do not tou h live ele tri al ir uits with the refle tive surfa e of a plasti dental mirror. The surfa e is
ondu tive; su h tou hing an ause personal injury and ma hine damage.
• Do not servi e the following parts with the power on when they are removed from their normal operating
pla es in a ma hine:
–Power supply units
– Pumps
– Blowers and fans
–Motor generators
– Similar units as listed above
This pra ti e ensures orre t grounding of the units.
• If an ele tri al a ident o urs:
–Use aution; do not be ome a vi tim yourself.
– Swit h off power.
– Send another person to get medi al aid.
afety inspection guide
The purpose of this inspe tion guide is to assist you in identifying potentially unsafe onditions. As ea h
ma hine was designed and built, required safety items were installed to prote t users and servi e
te hni ians from injury. This guide addresses only those items. You should use good judgment to identify
potential safety hazards due to atta hment of non-Lenovo features or options not overed by this inspe tion
guide.
If any unsafe onditions are present, you must determine how serious the apparent hazard ould be and
whether you an ontinue without first orre ting the problem.
Consider these onditions and the safety hazards they present:
• Ele tri al hazards, espe ially primary power (primary voltage on the frame an ause serious or fatal
ele tri al sho k)
• Explosive hazards, su h as a damaged athode ray tube (CRT) fa e or a bulging apa itor
•Me hani al hazards, su h as loose or missing hardware

To determine whether there are any potentially unsafe onditions, use the following he klist at the
beginning of every servi e task. Begin the he ks with the power off, and the power ord dis onne ted.
Che klist:
1. Che k exterior overs for damage (loose, broken, or sharp edges).
2. Power off the omputer. Dis onne t the power ord.
3. Che k the power ord for:
a. A third-wire ground onne tor in good ondition. Use a meter to measure third-wire ground
ontinuity for 0.1 ohm or less between the external ground pin and the frame ground.
b. The power ord should be the authorized type spe ified for your omputer. Go to: http://
www.lenovo. om/servi eparts-lookup
. Insulation must not be frayed or worn.
4. Che k for ra ked or bulging batteries.
5. Remove the over.
6. Che k for any obvious non-Lenovo alterations. Use good judgment as to the safety of any non-Lenovo
alterations.
7. Che k inside the unit for any obvious unsafe onditions, su h as metal filings, ontamination, water or
other liquids, or signs of fire or smoke damage.
8. Che k for worn, frayed, or pin hed ables.
9. Che k that the power-supply over fasteners (s rews or rivets) have not been removed or tampered
with.
Handling devices that are sensitive to electrostatic discharge
Any omputer part ontaining transistors or integrated ir uits (ICs) should be onsidered sensitive to
ele trostati dis harge (ESD). ESD damage an o ur when there is a differen e in harge between obje ts.
Prote t against ESD damage by equalizing the harge so that the ma hine, the part, the work mat, and the
person handling the part are all at the same harge.
Notes:
1. Use produ t-spe ifi ESD pro edures when they ex eed the requirements noted here.
2. Make sure that the ESD prote tive devi es you use have been ertified (ISO 9000) as fully effe tive.
When handling ESD-sensitive parts:
• Keep the parts in prote tive pa kages until they are inserted into the produ t.
• Avoid onta t with other people.
• Wear a grounded wrist strap against your skin to eliminate stati on your body.
• Prevent the part from tou hing your lothing. Most lothing is insulative and retains a harge even when
you are wearing a wrist strap.
• Use a grounded work mat to provide a stati -free work surfa e. The mat is espe ially useful when
handling ESD-sensitive devi es.
• Sele t a grounding system, su h as those listed below, to provide prote tion that meets the spe ifi
servi e requirement.
Note: The use of a grounding system to guard against ESD damage is desirable but not ne essary.
– Atta h the ESD ground lip to any frame ground, ground braid, or green-wire ground.
– When working on a double-insulated or battery-operated system, use an ESD ommon ground or
referen e point. You an use oax or onne tor-outside shells on these systems.
– Use the round ground prong of the a plug on a -operated omputers.

Grounding requirements
Ele tri al grounding of the omputer is required for operator safety and orre t system fun tion. Proper
grounding of the ele tri al outlet an be verified by a ertified ele tri ian.
