1Unpack your printer
Remove all tape and packing material from the
Lexmark 1100 Color Jetprinter™.
Do not install the print cartridge until you are
prompted to do so during the software installation.

2Attach the paper exit tray
2a. Rotate the printer onto its
back

2b. Attach the exit tray
1Align the tabs on the paper exit tray with the slots
on the base of the printer.
2Gently press the printer and paper exit tray
together until the exit tray snaps into place.
2c. Rotate the printer to its
upright position

3Install the paper support
1Locate the slots on the back of the printer.
2Push the paper support tabs into the slots until
they snap into place.
3Make sure the paper support is in the upright
position as shown.

4Connect the parallel cable
4a. Connect the cable to the
printer
Use a parallel cable that supports bidirectional
communication (IEEE 1284-compatible), such as
Lexmark P/N 1329605.

4b. Secure the connections
1Fasten the metal clips on the printer to the parallel
cable.
2Connect the parallel cable to the computer. Make
sure you tighten the screws.
5Plug in your printer
1Connect the power cord to the printer.
2Plug the power cord into an electrical outlet.
You will hear some movement inside the printer
when you plug it in.

6Load paper
6a. Pull the paper load lever
toward you
6b. Insert paper
Load up to 30 sheets of paper against the right side
of the sheet feeder.
Note: Overloading the printer may cause paper
jams or misfeeds.

6c. Adjust the paper guide
Slide the paper guide to the left edge of the paper.
6d. Push the paper load lever
away from you

7Install the printer
software
The Lexmark 1000 Series compact disc includes
printer drivers for Windows 95, 98, 3.1, and 3.11.
If your computer does not have a CD-ROM drive:
•Visit our website at http://www.lexmark.com
to download a printer driver to your computer.
•You can create driver diskettes using another
computer with a CD-ROM drive and the
Creating Diskette button on the CD that came
with your printer.
•Ask our Technical Support Center to mail you
diskettes. Refer to the printer registration card
for the number in your country.
Refer to the Lexmark 1100 User’s Guide for more
information about installing from diskettes.
7a. Insert the CD-ROM
If Windows 95 or 98 displays a New Hardware
Found screen and prompts you to install a printer
driver, choose Do not install a driver and click
OK.

1Make sure Windows is running on your computer.
2Insert the Lexmark 1000 Series CD into your CD-
ROM drive.
•If the menu screen appears after a few
moments, continue with Step 7b.
•If nothing appears on the screen after a few
moments, follow these steps:

From the Start menu choose Run.
Windows 3.1, 3.11
From the Windows Program Manager
menu bar, choose File, then choose Run.
bIn the command-line text box, type the
letter of your CD-ROM drive, followed
by setup (for example,d:\setup), and then
click OK.
7b. Install the printer driver
1When the menu screen appears, click Install
Printer Software.
2Follow the instructions on the screen.
When the Install New Cartridge dialog appears,
continue with Step 8, “Install the print cartridge”.

8Install the print cartridge
8a. Open the front cover 8b. Unpack the print cartridge
1Remove the new print cartridge from its
packaging.
2Remove the sticker and the transparent tape
covering the copper area on the cartridge.

copper contact area!

8c. Insert the cartridge
When the Install New Cartridge dialog appears, the
cartridge carrier automatically moves to the load
position inside the printer.
Insert the print cartridge into the cartridge carrier as
shown.
8d. Snap the cartridge into
place
Push back on the cartridge until it snaps securely
into place.
Note: If the print cartridge moves loosely in the
carrier, it is not locked into place. Repeat this
step.

8e. Close the front cover 8f. Click “Cartridge Installed ”
In the printer software, click the appropriate
Cartridge Installed button (depending on the type of
cartridge you installed).

Install New Cartridge
Open the printer’s front cover and install a new
cartridge then click on <Cartridge Installed> to indicate
completion. If you are not installing a new cartridge,
please click <Cancel>.

8g. Align the print cartridge
You will be prompted to align your print cartridge.
If you decide to align the cartridge, the printer prints
a test page with a bidirectional alignment pattern.
Each pattern has a number under it.

1On the printed test page, locate the number under
the Bidirectional Alignment pattern that comes
closest to forming a straight line.
2In the Align Cartridge dialog box, enter the
number as the Bidirectional Align setting.
3Click OK.
