Short Manual LAI-2000
1. Startup:
There are 5 connectors on the end of the control unit. See figure 1.
−X and Y in fig. 1 (two 15 pin D connector) for the LAI-2050 optical sensors
−1 and 2 in fig. 1 (BNC connectors) used with any LI-COR light sensor.
−RS-232C Port in fig. 1 (25 pin D connector) for data communication equipment (DCE)

1. Connect a LAI-2050 to the X connector
2. Press the ON key (upper right corner)
3. To turn the instrument OFF, press FCT followed by a 0 and a 9.
2. Instrument Settings:
Press SETUP to go to a list of tasks that the LAI-2000 can do and that have something to do
with instrument setting
Use ↓or ↑to scroll through the list. Make a choice by putting the desired function on the top
of the list, press ENTER
Important settings
1. Check the resolution setting. Press SETUP key, position 04 resolution on the top line,
ENTER. Set resolution preferably on high.

2. Set the operation mode. Press SETUP key, position 11 Set Op Mode on the top line,
ENTER. Use ↓or ↑to display ‘1 sensor X’ on the top line, ENTER. You are then
prompted for the sequence of above and below readings: ↑means above canopy
reading, ↓means below canopy reading. If needed, set a new sequence and press
ENTER. Choose the number of repetitions (reps) which is the number of times you
whish to repeat the pattern for one complete measurement.
3. Logging data and computing LAI.
Press LOG, this initiates the process of collecting the necessary above and below
measurements to calculate LAI.
Respond to the two prompts (1) What (which crop) and (2) Where (plot)
N.B.: While logging in ‘1 sensor X’ mode, one line of the display is in real time, the other is
the summary line. These lines will change positions with the position of the real time
line indicating whether the next reading is to be an above canopy, or below canopy
reading See figure 2. The *is always on the real time line. When the real-time line is
on the top of the display, the number to the left of the * indicates the number of above
canopy readings thus far. When the real-time line is on the bottom of the display, the
number to the left of the * indicates the number of below canopy readings thus far. If
wanted, the channel ID can be changed by ↓or ↑( or by ←or →if the real-time line
is at the bottom of the display). This is only needed when more than one optical sensor
is connected.
The summary line displays three numbers summarizing the measurement. (1) the
number of the above/ below pairs that have been accepted (SMP) (2) The running
average of LAI (LAI) (3) the standard error (SEL)

Measurement
1. Hold the sensor leveled just above the canopy.
2. Press ENTER or button on the sensor (beep sounds)
3. if the measurement is finished, a 2
nd
beep sounds.
4. When the last measurement has been logged, the display shows COMPUTING…
View measurement results
After logging, the viewing mode is automatically activated. If not, press FCT 27.

In view mode, press 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 for:
1. header information, remarks, results
2. Angels and distances.
3. CTNT# and STDDEV values
4. Angles and gaps
5. Observations.
To see the observations, press 5. Explanation, see below.
4. Get the data out of the instrument
First of all you need a PC or laptop with the LAI-2000 software installed
Via the RS-232 (see fig. 1) data can be transmitted to a computer or printer.
1. connect the LAI-2000 to the computer with appropriate cable
2. Run the computer program
3. Make sure the computer’s RS-232 port and the LAI-2000 are configured compatibly
4. Specify the destination for incoming data on the computer
5. Define the output format via FCT33 and transfer . File formats: FCT33 allows files to
be output in one of the two formats standard (for use in LAI-2000 software) or
Spreadsheet (for exporting to e.g. excel)
For computers that do not have a RS-232 port, use the serial-to-USB-adapter. (Explanation
below)
