Before using your locomotive, this instruction booklet should be read by everyone that will be operating the locomotive. These are
important instructions on the locomotive's operation and directions on avoiding damage to it through misuse.
Most of the questions you will have about care and maintenance are answered here. If you have further questions about your
locomotive or accessories contact your AUTHORIZED LIONEL SERVICE CENTER using the listing included on a separate flyer
in the locomotive's packaging.
This locomotive is designed to have a voltage range of 5-15 volts A.C. or D.C. and under normal conditions, will pull at least 25
cars on a level grade track.
Your engine is equipped with "Tire-Traction". This means that one of the drive wheels is fitted with a rubber tire to permit greater
pulling power. Lionel engines with "Tire-Traction" grip the track and enable the engine to pull heavy loads at higher speeds.
OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

This locomotive is designed to use Lionel liquid smoke fluid. To fill the smoke generator, squeeze 4 to 8 drops of smoke fluid
into the smokestack. The locomotive will begin to puff smoke several seconds after track power is turned on. The locomotive
will puff smoke only when the wheels are turning. If more than 8 drops of smoke fluid are used, the generator may overflow
and fluid will spill out. If this should happen, lift the locomotive slightly, making sure all drive wheels remain in contact with the
track. Increase track voltage so drive wheels turn rapidly. After a few minutes, the locomotive will begin to puff smoke and
will operate normally.
NOTE: Do not leave the locomotive on the track in neutral for an e tended
period of time with track power applied. This may cause overheating of the
smoke generator.
NOTE: The “Smoke Fluid” contains a light liquid petrolatum. Smoke fluid stains
can be removed using standard cleaning agents, such as water soluble deter-

REVERSING UNIT
The life and performance of your engine depend to a considerable e tent, on proper care and lubrication of the motor and other
moving parts. You may wish to see your LIONEL dealer about purchasing a MAINTENANCE KIT. If you haven’t purchased
your MAINTENANCE KIT, use the point of a pin or a thin wire to apply a dab of OIL where indicated.Lubricate carefully but
never to e cess. A small amount of oil or lubricant properly applied, goes a long way. Be careful not to get any oil or lubricant
on the running surfaces of the wheels or the rails, or your engine will lose traction.
The moving parts of your engine such as gears and a les require periodic lubrication. When operating the train regularly,
inspect these parts frequently, to make sure they are not dry. Remove accumulations of dust and dirt. Also, clean and lubricate
the engine after storage. Use only small quantities of lubricant with each application. DO NOT OVER LUBRICATE.

REVERSING UNIT
ON/OFF SWITCH
This reversing unit is 100% solid state, utilizing the latest in micro-electronics. It has no electrical contacts to corrode or wear
out over a period of time so its operation is e tremely reliable. Each time current to the engine is interrupted, the unit trips,
causing the engine to move to the ne t function. This can be done by pushing the “direction” control button on the controller
or by moving the controller speed control dial to the OFF position, and ON again. The sequence of operation is Forward-
Neutral-Reverse-Neutral-Forward, etc.
Also, the engine can be “locked” into a certain mode of operation by throwing the switch located underneath the rear of the
cab (See Figure 7 above). When the switch is thrown to the OFF position, the engine will be locked in the ne t mode of oper-
ation in the sequence. For instance, if the engine is moving forward, then is stopped and the switch is thrown back, the
engine will be “locked” in neutral. If the switch is thrown back while the engine is under power, the engine will remain in the
mode it was in when the switch was thrown. The controller direction control will then have no effect on direction of the engine.
Additionally, this “Reversing Unit” has a “power up reset” feature which means that should the engine sit without power for a
short period of time, the “Reversing Unit” will automatically reset and start in the forward direction when the transformer is
turned ON or “powered up” regardless of the locking switch position. If the locking switch is in the OFF position, the engine
will start in the forward direction and be “locked” there.
ENGINE CARE
SERVICE
This product is proudly offered by Lionel Trains, Inc. and it carries a warranty to support its continued reliable operation. You
may choose to have the Lionel Service Department service your item even after its warranty e pires.If so, a reasonable ser-
vice fee will be charged. In either event, please follow the directions below.
If service is required within the warranty period, bring the item to the nearest authorized Lionel Trains Service Station along
with the warranty card. To find the nearest Dealer / Service Station to you, simply call 1-800-4 LIONEL . If you prefer to send it
back to the factory, you must first call (810)-949-4100, Fa (810)-949-5429 or write to Customer Service, P.O. Bo 748 New
Baltimore, MI 48047-0748 stating what the item is, when it was purchased and what seems to be the problem. You will be sent
a return authorization letter and label to assure your merchandise will be properly handled upon receipt.
CAUTION: Make sure the item is packed so as to prevent damage to the merchandise. The shipment must be prepaid and we
recommend that it be insured.
Please make sure you have followed the instructions carefully before returning any merchandise for service. This warranty
gives you specific legal rights and you may have others that vary from state to state.

LAMP REPLACEMENT
Due to the comple ity of removing the cab from the chassis to replace the bulb, it is recommended that this engine be
taken to your nearest Lionel Authorized Service Station for bulb replacement. To find the nearest Dealer / Service Station
to you, simply call 1-800-4 LIONEL. Replacement Bulb No. is 600-8516-009. For those who wish to replace the bulb them-
selves, reference the following procedures:
Remove the rear truck assembly by first removing the screw and washer, then tilting the screw end upwards and pulling
the drawbar forward to clear the cab. (See STEP 1).
Remove the screws in the center wheels which retain the drive rods. Remember the e act position of one eccentric crank
to be sure to replace them correctly. ( The other eccentric crank is positioned 180° or opposite in direction). (See Step 2).
With a long thin phillips type screwdriver, loosen but do not remove the two screws securing the chassis to the cab. (See
STEP 1). If the screws come out completely, they will need to be started into the chassis tabs two turns prior to reassem-
bly. Once these are loosened, the chassis can be completely removed from the cab by lifting on the front end to clear the
smoke stack and then sliding out the back and lifting the back end.

COUPLING
The new bulb can be spliced into the wires or can be soldered to the wires at the smoke unit. (See STEP 3). All wiring con-
nections need to be taped with electrical tape to prevent shorting. Bulb No. is 600-8516-009 and is available from your
local Authorized Lionel Service Station or the Lionel Consumer Services Department.
For reassembly, locate the chassis back into the cab and insert the bulb into the headlight opening. It may be necessary to
use tweezers to guide the bulb into the opening. Be careful not to pinch any wires. The smoke unit will drop into the smoke
stack when correctly positioned. Locate the chassis tabs over the screw bosses in the cab, then retighten the screws.
Reassemble the side rods, spacers, and eccentric cranks. Position center wheel so screw hole is aligned to the opening in
the side rod. Note: The eccentric cranks are keyed to fit the wheels. (See STEP 2A on previous page). They must be rein-
stalled in the e act position they were originally in. Fully tighten screws. Replace the rear truck assembly by sliding the
drawbar back through the slot in the cab. Position the drawbar hole over the mounting boss, then locate the truck. Replace
the screw and washer. Test the engine to make sure the wheels and linkage rotate freely. If they jam, the eccentric cranks
have probably been reinstalled in the wrong position, and should be reversed. Remember the eccentric cranks point in
opposite directions, i.e. if one is at 12 o’clock, the other must point at 6 o’clock.
STEP 3:
The 4-6-2 locomotive and tender are joined by hook-
ing their flat drawbars together (See Figure 6). The
coupler on the rear of the tender is an operating
coupler that can hook up with all LIONEL 0/027
Gauge rolling stock. To connect the tender to other
cars, open the coupler and slowly back the tender
into the car on any straight stretch of track. The cou-
pler will engage.
The tender coupler is of the “magnetic” type and can
be opened using a remote uncoupling track, which is
available in 0 and 027 Gauges at your local Lionel
Hobby Dealer. If you uncouple the 4-6-2 and tender
from your train while the train is in motion, keep one
hand on the voltage control and be ready to cut
down the speed as the locomotive will accelerate
immediately when its train load is released.
To manually open the knuckle of the coupler push
down on the flat bar protruding from beneath the
coupler head.
