Congratulations on your purchase of the Lionel Railroad Tugboat! This highly detailed accessory features interior lighting, realistic steam whistle and engine sounds, and an
operating smoke unit. With a removable base, the Tugboat is perfect for use on your layout or
for shelf display. This accessory is powered through a standard hobby transformer.
Your Tugboat is to be displayed on your layout, tabletop, or shelf. Do not attempt
to float it in water.

Your Tugboat’s mast is designed to fit through the hole in the upper deck and into the slot in the lower deck. Before you begin to install the mast, slide the bottom of the mast
through the knots tied in the two strings. As illustrated in Figure 1, carefully stand up the
mast, then slide it through the hole in the back of the upper deck until the mast rests in the
hole in the lower deck. Using tweezers or a pair of needle-nose pliers, gently slip the knots over
the rings. Be sure to position each “knot” above each ring on the mast, then gently pull on the
lines to tighten the knot.
Next, press the antenna into the roof of the pilothouse. Refer to Figure 1.
Finally, you are ready to install the smoke stack. Match the tabs on the bottom of the
smoke stack with the notches in the deck, then lower the stack into the opening. Refer to
Figure 7 on page 8. Note that each tab fits into only one of the notches. Rotate the stack
clockwise to lock it in place.

the holes in the lower deck. Lower the
lifeboat into the cradle, inserting the
lifeboat posts into the holes below. Refer
to Figure 2.

Your Tugboat has been secured to a durable molded base. You may choose to leave the boat on the simulated water wake, or you may remove the base. Simply remove the two base
screws as illustrated in Figure 3 and lift off the Tugboat.

The Railroad Tugboat was designed to operate at 15-18 volts (AC). Because this accessory is equipped with sensitive electronics, do not exceed the 18-volt maximum. If the accessory
is powered at less than 15 volts, you may find that the sound is distorted. There are three ways
to supply power to this accessory. First, you may connect the accessory to a separate power
supply, a FasTrack Accessory Power Wire (available separately, 6-12033), or to a Lionel Lockon
(available separately, 6-62900). Simply attach one wire to each of the AC POWER terminals
and connect them to the power supply, FasTrack accessory wire, or Lionel Lockon. Refer to
Figure 4 for the location of these terminals.
Alternately, you may choose to purchase a standard wall pack power supply from your
local electronics supply store. The wall pack should be capable of supplying 12-18 volts, 1A
(minumum) and have a 2.5mm barrel jack end. Plug in the jack at the location illustrated in
Figure 4.
Do not operate the Tugboat’s smoke generator without smoke fluid. Refer to page 8.
Do not exceed 18 volts. Damage to sensitive electronics may occur.

Before you operate the Tugboat, add four to eight drops of fluid to the smoke generator. To add smoke fluid, carefully rotate the stack counter-clockwise about an eighth of a turn,
then lift it away. Add the fluid into the hole in the circuit board as illustrated in Figure 6.
Be sure that the smoke fluid is not spilled onto the surface of the circuit board.

Power up the Tugboat, and you will hear the sounds of the Tugboat’s engine running and random marker buoy, foghorn, whistle and seagull sounds. Press the HORN/WHISTLE
button on your transformer at any time, and the whistle sound will play.
The lights, background sounds, and smoke feature are operational when the Tugboat is
powered up. To turn the sound and smoke features off, throw the switches on the life boat to
the Off position. Refer to Figure 7. Always be sure that there is some smoke fluid in the smoke
unit when the smoke unit switch is in the On position.

Two lamps illuminate the interior of your Tugboat. During the course of normal operations, you may find that they require replacement.
The first lamp is located under the removable hatch. Remove the corner button and the screw
from the deck of the boat as shown in Figure 8. Lift away the hatch to locate the lamp to the rear
of the battery holder. Gently unscrew the lamp and replace it with Lionel part no. 6104172300,
available from your authorized Lionel Service Center or from Lionel Service. Reposition the hatch,
securing it with the deck screw.
The second lamp is located directly below the pilothouse. To access this lamp, locate
the latch beneath the pilothouse stairs and swing it away from the structure as illustrated
in Figure 9 on page 11. Lift the pilothouse away from the Tugboat, making sure that the
two front tabs clear the Tugboat deck. Unscrew the lamp and replace it with Lionel part
no. 6104172300, then replace the pilothouse.
Your Tugboat’s navigation lights and spotlight are illuminated by LEDs (light
emitting diodes). The LEDs are expected to last for the life of the accessory.
