• Note the pull of Magne-Traction®between your SD60-M and the steel track
Magnetized wheels and axles increase pulling power (more than 25 cars on
straight and level track) and keep your SD60-M on track while passing swift-
ly through curves Because the wheelsets are magnetized, take care to prevent
small metallic objects from attaching to the wheelsets and working their way
into the SD60-M’s motor assembly They can damage your locomotive
• Magne-Traction is not effective on nonferrous track

• Your SD60-M is designed to operate on 7-18 volts alternating current
Virtually all Lionel and Lionel-compatible alternating-current transform-
ers are suitable; we recommend the TrainMaster Command model rail-
road control system
• DO NOT POWER YOUR SD60-M WITH DIRECT CURRENT (DC) Damage to sen-
sitive electronic components may occur
• When you first power up your track, the SD60-M will wait between 3 and 8
seconds as it “listens” for digital language from the TrainMaster Command
Base (available separately) When it’s determined that it’s on a conventional
(nonCommand) railroad, the SD60-M’s headlight will illuminate and
Railsounds will fire up At this point, the SD60-M is in neutral (This occurs
when placing the SD60-M on your railroad for the first time Thereafter, it
starts in forward after every three-second power interrupt )

or Lionel transformer This sequences the Liontech Command reverse
unit (LCRU2) to the next operating state

only during forward/neutral operation Have fun!

To select a single operational state for
your Lionel SD60-M (example: for-
ward only), you can deactivate the
LCRU2’s sequencing function with the
reverse unit control switch, located on
the underside of the locomotive
Get your locomotive moving in the
desired direction, then slow it down
without stopping. Set the reverse unit
control switch to PROGRAM/LOCK
The SD60-M is now “locked” into your
chosen direction
When you no longer want single-
direction operation, just slide the
reverse unit control switch back to
FORWARD/ RUN
Your SD60-M’s front and rear
Electrocoupler™will respond to the
coupler release buttons on your CAB-1
remote when operated in the TrainMaster
Command environment (see page 9 for
button location) During conventional
operation, the Electrocouplers will react
to the magnetic field generated by a
Lionel remote-control track section (avail-
able separately)
In TrainMaster Command operation,
simply press the COUPLER F (front) or R
(rear) button on your CAB-1 remote, and
the coupler opens, accompanied by the
Railsounds coupler release sound
In the conventional mode, place the
coupler’s “trigger disc” over the remote-
control track’s coil and press UNCOUPLE on
the controller The magnetic field pulls the
disc downward, and the coupler opens
One operating technique favored by
Lionel railroaders is the “moving uncou-
ple ” Press the COUPLER R button on your
CAB-1 remote or, in the conventional
mode, press the UNCOUPLE button as the
SD60-M passes over a remote-control sec-
tion The coupler will open and the consist
will remain behind as the locomotive
moves on
But be careful when uncoupling—the
speed of a newly uncoupled and moving
locomotive can increase dramatically

RPM roar—automatically, if you prefer:
idle, medium, or full-speed output

CAB-1 or transformer to begin the effect,
again to discontinue
• Full control of RPMs Prefer hands-on
control of diesel RPM roar? Want to
“ramp up” RPMs before pulling out, just
like real diesels do? It’s easy with
Railsounds Place your SD60-M in neutral
and increase track voltage to maximum
RPMs will continue to increase as long as
the SD60-M remains in neutral, eventual-
ly reaching their highest level
Now, decrease track voltage to the
desired speed level, press DIR on your
CAB-1 remote or transformer, and
head out, your SD60-M at full churn,
just like the real thing RPMs will
remain at that level until the locomotive
has come to a complete halt. Experiment
with controllable RPMs—it’s a blast!
• Reverse unit reset sound Power
down your track, wait for 3-5 seconds,
and listen for the air-release sound—
that’s the SD60-M telling you its Lionel
Command reverse unit has just reset to
forward operation.
• Shutdown sequence No other
model railroad sound system shuts
down like Railsounds Turn off track
power, and after the air-release reset
sound, you have two seconds to
restart your SD60-M If you’re done
with operations, Railsounds will com-
mence with an authentic SD60-M
shutdown sequence about two sec-
onds after the air-release reset occurs

To operate the bell and horn sounds
when operating your SD60-M with
conventional transformers, you’ll need to
install the Lionel no 610-5906-001 sound
activation button (available separately)

TrainMaster Command operations
Your SD60-M in the TrainMaster Command environment
Lionel TrainMaster Command is the
fun and sophisticated model railroad
control system from Lionel Your SD60-M
features the Lionel Command reverse
unit, which acts as both a conventional
reverse unit as well as the key to unlock-
ing many extra features when you oper-
ate in Command mode
TrainMaster Command gives you the
power to operate multiple Command-
equipped locomotives on the same track,
at the same time. It’s the most fun you
can have with electric trains, and it’s
incredibly easy too! Just follow the
directions below and you’ll be on your
way
TO OPERATE IN COMMAND, YOU NEED A
COMMAND BASE AND A CAB-1 REMOTE
Find them both at your authorized
Lionel retailer
Place your SD60-M on Lionel or Lionel-compatible
O gauge track.
• Make sure track power is OFF before placing it on track
• Make sure your Lionel Command Base is ON and its communications
wire is connected to the COMMON post on your Lionel transformer
or the U on any of your installed PowerMasters
• Once positioned on the track, increase track voltage to FULL (on
PowerMaster, slide the CMD/CONV switch to CMD)
Address your SD60-M with CAB-1.
• Press ENG and 1 on the numeric keypad of your CAB-1 remote This
command is sent by CAB-1 to the Command Base, which then trans-
lates your commands into digital code That code is sent around your
railroad’s outside rails in the form of a digital “halo ” All Command-
equipped Lionels listen to this digital communication, but they do
not respond until they hear their own ID number
• The digital language of TrainMaster Command—and not track
power—controls the actions of Command-equipped Lionels Track
power is simply like gasoline in the tank of your car—it gives you the
power to go places, but it doesn’t tell you where to go or how fast to
get there
• All Command-equipped Lionels come factory-programmed with an
ID# of “1 ” To change your SD60-M’s ID#, see page 12

Tuning your SD60-M’s performance
MOMENTUM
TrainMaster Command’s momentum
feature simulates the labored perfor-
mance of a locomotive pulling a heavy
load Press L, M, or H (located under
CAB-1’s removable panel) for light,
medium, or heavy momentum The
SD60-M’s LCRU remembers this set-
ting until you change it For quick loco-
motive response, choose L For delayed
response, choose H
BRAKING AND BOOSTING
There’s more to starting and stopping
than just turning the CAB-1 throttle
Use the BOOST and BRAKE command
buttons—they give you incremental
control of speed and are the superior
way to handle grades, gradual stops-
and-starts, and more
Plus, using BRAKE in the Com-
mand environment gives you a bonus
Railsounds effect—the ultrarealistic
sound of squealing brakes

you use your SD60-M’s volume control

Assigning your SD60-M a new ID#
As your fleet of Command-equipped
Lionels grows, you’ll want to give
your SD60-M a more individualized
number Choose from any between 1
and 99 To make things easy, use a por-
tion of your SD60-M’s cab number
Turn the Command Base ON and
place the SD60-M on track Power up,
then set the SD60-M’s reverse unit con-
trol switch to PROGRAM/LOCK (see
the illustration) Using CAB-1, press
ENG, the locomotive ID# (example: 55),
then press the SET button located under
CAB-1’s removable panel Hear the horn
blow (or see the headlight flash if
Railsounds is off); that’s the LCRU con-
firming the new ID# Set the reverse unit
control switch to FORWARD/RUN

We recommend you purchase a
Lionel Lubrication and
Maintenance Kit (no 6-62927),
available from your Lionel
dealer Two basic rules to
keep in mind: never over-
lubricate (a small amount
will do), and avoid getting
grease or oil on the SD60-M’s wheels or
your track
You’ll know your SD60-M requires
lubrication when visual inspection
reveals dryness on the parts
indicated in the illustration
Remove accumulated dirt
and dust before lubricating,
and always lubricate any
locomotive emerging from
prolonged storage

Maintaining and servicing your SD60-M
Lubricating your SD60-M’s Pullmor®motor armatures
Your SD60-M will require occasional
lubrication of its Pullmor®motor
armatures If you hear excess noise dur-
ing operation, or if the locomotive slows
down intermittently, you may need to
oil the top armature bearing
Start by removing only those screws
with brackets and the two cab screws at
the arrow locations in the illustration
below The cab can now be seperated
from the frame, taking care not to pull
on the connecting wires Next, carefully
remove the set screw from the top of the
motor brush plate using a 050" Allen
wrench Apply a small amount of Lionel
oil (two drops) in the set screw hole
Reinstall the set screw tightly, then ack
off one-half turn. Duplicate these steps for
the other Pullmor motor
Finish the job by reinstalling the
body shell Align the frame brackets so
that they do not interfere with the
trucks’ swing
The Lionel Command
reverse unit and Railsounds
sound system are sophisti-
cated electronic devices and
are extremely sensitive to
static electricity Please avoid
all physical contact with
Railsounds and the LCRU

After removing the .050" set screw, place a small amount of Lionel oil (two drops

Replacing your SD60-M’s lamps
Your SD60-M is illuminated by two
12-volt lamps During the course
of normal operation, they
may require replacement
Begin by removing the
SD60-M’s shell; see the previ-
ous section on armature
lubrication for detailed shell-
removal information Care-
fully lift the shell away from
the frame Take care with the
various wiring assemblies
connected to the shell
Locate the assembly con-
taining the expired lamp It’s
held in position by a retain-
ing clip; carefully remove the
target lamp assembly from
the retaining clip, then gently
pull the expired lamp from the socket
Replace it with Lionel part no 600-8352-
311, available from your autho-
rized Lionel Service Center or
Lionel Service See the Lionel
Service section on page 16 for
more information Reinstall the
shell
Your Lionel SD60-M is
equipped with ocillating ditch
lights These small bulbs
(Lionel part no 10-8232-009)
are located in the pilot

from its retaining clip, and replace the expired lamp.

Your Lionel SD60-M is equipped with a roof mounted flashing
strobe light, this small bulb (Lionel part no 10-8803-009) is located
inside the cab During the course of normal operation it may require
replacement
Because installation requires soldering, we recommend that you have
your local Authorized Lionel Service Center perform this service

T
he snowplow and hydraulic hose
included with your SD60-M locomotive
gives it the authentic look of a real loco-
motive! These parts are packaged sepa-
rately and need to be attached
To attach the snowplow, simply insert
the two inner pins into the corresponding
holes on the pilot of the front motor truck
as illustrated
To attach the hydraulic hose assembly,
loosen the screw holding the front (cab
side) railing Slip the notched part of the
hose bracket under the screw in the posi-
tion shown and retighten
