outfit features a powerful Berkshire steam
locomotive and four detailed cars. With the
transformer, controller, and 16 sections of
track, you have everything you need to start on
your adventure!
The transformer included with this set should be periodically
examined for conditions that may result in the risk of fire,
electric shock, or injury to persons (such as damage to the
output cord, blades, housing, or other parts). In the event that
such conditions exist, the transformer should not be used until
properly repaired.

Joining the track sections
Join the track sections together by inserting the pins of one track section into the open
ends of another. For good electrical contact,
the pins must be carefully inserted and the
track joints tightly fitted.
If the track is difficult to connect, try this
installation tip. You can “break in” the track
sections by inserting and withdrawing a track
pin into one rail at a time before joining the
entire track section as illustrated in Figure 1.
If the openings become too large (causing
the track to fit loosely), pinch the rail together
around a track pin with a pair of pliers. If any
pins fall out of the track and are missing,
replace them with extras available from your
Lionel dealer.
Maintenance tip: The rails should be
kept clean, dry, and free from oil and grease.
Clean rust and dirt spots with a track eraser.
Wipe the track using a cloth dampened with
track cleaner from the Lionel Maintenance Kit
(6-62927), available from your nearest Lionel
Dealer.

Suggested track layouts
Figure 2 provides some examples of layouts you can build with eight straight
and eight curved sections of track.
Remember—the more track you own, the
more variations you can create in your train
layout. And that means more action and
more fun!
We recommend that you do not set
up your track layout on carpeted
surfaces. Carpet fibers may collect on your
engine’s wheels and drive gears, preventing
your engine from operating properly. For
best results, place the track on a hard
surface.

Attaching the Lock-On to the track
The Lock-On connects power from your controller to the track. As illustrated in
Figure 3, attaching the Lock-On to the track
is quick and easy. First, place the Lock-On
under any straight section of track. Fit the
center lip of the Lock-On onto the edge of an
outside rail. Press the Lock-On upward so
that the spring contact snaps onto the center
rail. The Lock-On should face outward when
setting up your track. Make sure it is firmly
connected.
Once the Lock-On is securely attached to
the track, you are ready to insert the wires
from the controller into the two spring clips
on the Lock-On.

Stripping the wire
Once your track is assembled and the Lock-On is securely attached, you can
connect the wires from the controller to the
Lock-On.
First you’ll want to check the ends of the
wires to make sure that the insulation is
stripped back about 1⁄4˝ to 3⁄8˝. To strip the
wires, use a pair of wire strippers or a sharp
knife as illustrated in Figure 4.

WARNING: When using electrical products,
basic safety precautions should be
maintained including the following:
• Read this manual thoroughly before
using this device.
• This device is not recommended for
children under eight years of age.
• Parents should periodically inspect the
BW/PowerHouse unit for potential
hazards and have unit repaired if
necessary by an Authorized Lionel
Service Center.
• The BW/PowerHouse is intended to be
used indoors. Do not use if water is
present. Serious or fatal injury may
result.
• Do not use the BW/PowerHouse for other
than its intended purpose. The unit was
designed to operate with the Type BW
controllers only.
• The BW/PowerHouse is designed to
operate on 120-volt, 60-Hertz power. Do
not connect to any other source of power.
• Do not operate the BW/PowerHouse with
a damaged cord, plug, or case.
• To avoid the risk of electrical shock, do
not disassemble the unit. There are no
user-serviceable parts inside. If damaged,
take BW/PowerHouse to your Authorized
Lionel Service Center. A list of Service
Centers is packed with this unit.
• CAUTION: Do not operate your layout
unattended. Obstructed accessories or
stalled trains may overheat, resulting in
damage to your layout.
• If the circuit breaker trips, turn the
BW/PowerHouse Off. Reset the circuit
breaker, then turn on the power and
resume operation.
• Always unplug the BW/PowerHouse from
the power source when not in use.

Installing your 80 Watt Type BW system
To connect Type BW to your track, start by attaching a Lock-On to your track.
Attach one wire to the center-rail spring clip
(#1) and connect it to the A terminal on the
Type BW Controller. Attach another wire to
the outside-rail spring clip (#2) and connect
it to the U terminal on the Type BW
Controller. Refer to Figure 6.
Type BW’s track U terminal and accessory
U terminal are common; therefore,
accessory ground connections can be made
to the track, if desired.
Use bare wire, banana plugs, or U-shaped
connectors on all Type BW connections, with
no more than two wires on each terminal.
On larger layouts where several track
connections are required, the use of separate
junctions/terminal strips is recommended to
prevent voltage drops.
Make sure all connections are very
secure. A loose connection can produce
extremely high temperatures. For this
reason, do not touch terminals or track
connections during use. Also, do not locate
scenery materials such as lichen or ground
foam near the terminals.
Next, connect the BW/PowerHouse by
inserting its connector into the Type BW’s
input jack. Refer to Figure 5 on page 7. Plug
the BW/PowerHouse into a wall outlet (120
volts, 60 cycles). Turn on the
BW/PowerHouse. (Always switch OFF the
BW/PowerHouse any time you’re not
operating your railroad.)

Operating your Type BW control unit
As you move the throttle forward, power to the track is increased. The farther
forward the throttle is turned, the faster your
train will go.
Remember that the greater the load on the
engine (adding more cars for the engine to
pull, for example), the farther forward the
throttle must be turned before it will operate
the locomotive.
Whistle/Horn
Activates the whistle or horn sound
effect in your Lionel locomotives. Press
Whistle/Horn to begin the sound; release
the button to end it.
Bell
Starts or stops the tolling
bell in any RailSounds-
equipped locomotive.
Press Bell to begin the
sound,again to stop it.
Direction
Press the Direction button to go
forward or reverse,or to place the
locomotive in“neutral”(no
movement,headlight is on).
Throttle
Controls your locomotive’s speed. Throw the
throttle forward to increase locomotive
speed,backward to slow it down.

Type BW control features
Refer to Figure 7 on page 10 for the locations of these controls.
Bell
The Bell button will activate all
RailSounds bells. Press and hold Bell two to
three seconds to begin the sound; press and
hold again to stop it.
Whistle/Horn
Press the Whistle/Horn button to activate
Lionel sound-equipped locomotives,
including those equipped with RailSounds.
The sound will continue until the button is
released. No external sound activation
buttons are needed.
Notes on sound activation
In RailSounds-equipped locomotives and
tenders, a continuous horn/whistle or bell
trigger can occur if the sound buttons are
pressed before RailSounds is “awake.” To
instantly correct this condition, turn
PowerHouse off and back on again. For best
results, do not activate RailSounds horns,
whistles, or bells until track power has
stabilized.
The Type BW may cause random whistles
in the Lionel Mighty Sound of Steam™
tender with a three-pin connector. We
recommend that you a purchase a
RailSounds-equipped tender to replace your
Mighty Sound of Steam tender.
Power-on indicator
The green light on the Type BW will
illuminate whenever the unit is receiving
power from the BW/PowerHouse.
Throttle
For more realism, turn the throttle slowly
to gradually increase or decrease locomotive
speed. The locomotive can then be brought
to a stop without triggering the direction
control; when the throttle is turned up
again, the locomotive will proceed in the
same direction.
Direction
The direction control button interrupts
track power to activate the reverse unit in
locomotives with forward-neutral-reverse
operation. This button has no effect on
locomotives not equipped with reverse units
or on locomotives with the reverse unit in
the OFF position.

Your Type BW provides a total output of five amps. The track (variable) output
will deliver five amps to the track when no
load is connected to the accessory (fixed)
“U” terminals. The accessory terminals also
provide a maximum output of five amps,
but the total output cannot exceed five
amps. For example, if your track output is
three amps, you have two amps of fixed
output to run your accessories. This built-in
flexibility will provide power for virtually
any small- to intermediate-sized railroad.
Available voltage varies depending on how
much load is on the two outputs. Generally,
track voltage is 0-18VAC. Accessory voltage is
12-16VAC.
The Type BW will operate trains up to and
including dual-motored AC engines. To
operate at this level of track power, it may be
necessary to disconnect any accessory load.
Always clean and lubricate engines for best
results. It may be necessary to power up
slowly at this load to prevent surge current
from tripping the Type BW’s protection
circuit.
The Type BW will operate any single
locomotive and consist. However, when a
locomotive with RailSounds is pulling
several illuminated cars, the current will
approach the trip point at certain times. In
this case, a light touch on the throttle may
be required.
Unlike older transformers with
mechanical current protection,
the Type BW reacts instantly to
overload conditions. Therefore,
the Type BW will react much
faster to an overload than
conventional transformers, but
power reset time will decrease as
well.
Type BW functions
Type BW and short circuits
To protect against overheating and damage due to short circuits, Type BW is
equipped with an electronic current-sensing
circuit breaker. When a short circuit occurs,
the green light will flash on and off and
power output will cease. This will also occur
if the 5-amp current limit is exceeded. The
unit will reset automatically once the short
has been corrected,
In rare instances, the BW/PowerHouse’s
mechanical circuit breaker may trip. To
reset the circuit on the BW/PowerHouse,
turn off the PowerHouse, then push the
circuit breaker in (see Figure 5 on page 8).
To prevent sudden train starts,
always move the throttle to zero
before resetting the PowerHouse
breaker.

Mounting the Type BW on your layout or control panel
To mount the Type BW controller on your layout or control panel, choose a
suitable position in which to place the
transformer. Then mark the 4 mounting
holes. Drive a screw into each of these four
points.
The BW/PowerHouse can also be mounted.
It has four mounting centers in a
1-3/4˝ x 4-3/8˝ (48mm x 131mm) pattern.
Troubleshooting guide
Solution
• Be sure that the BW/PowerHouse is plugged into a
working outlet.
• Check the connection between the Type BW Controller
and the PowerHouse.
• Check that BW/PowerHouse ON/OFF switch is ON.
Check wiring, looking for short circuits. Disconnect all
wiring. Reconnect circuits until the defective circuit is
found.
Check the track connections to the PowerStation. The
Whistle/horn, Bell, and Direction buttons function only on track
output terminals.
Be sure that the locomotive reverse unit is in the ON position.
Check for loose, shorted, or improper wiring connections.
On larger layouts, additional track resistance may cause a
voltage drop. Attach additional Lock-Ons to the remote
portion of your track and connect them to the controller.
The capacity may have been exceeded. Disconnect
accessories and turn off or remove powered cars one at a
time until problem ceases. Check for track short circuits.
Check the track wire connections. Switch the wire
connections at the Lock-On or on the controller.

Move ‘em out!
Place your locomotive on Lionel or
Lionel-compatible O or O-27 gauge track.
With track power OFF, connect the drawbar between the locomotive and tender as
illustrated in Figure 8.

Power up your steam locomotive with your transformer.
Your locomotive is designed to operate on 8-16 volts alternating
current. Virtually all Lionel and Lionel-compatible alternating-current
transformers are suitable.
Do not power your locomotive with direct current (DC). Damage to
sensitive electronic components may occur.
Get your locomotive moving. Press the DIR button on your Lionel transformer.
This advances the Lionel reverse unit to the next operating state in the repeating
sequence: forward, neutral, reverse, and neutral.
Adjust track voltage until your locomotive moves at your desired speed. To
increase speed, increase track voltage. To decrease speed, reduce voltage. To stop the
locomotive, turn off track power.

Locomotive operation
Locking your locomotive into a single operational state
The reverse unit inside your Lionel locomotive is an electronic device that
acts like the transmission in your car. When
you apply power to the track, the locomotive
moves in the direction specified by the
reverse unit—or it sits in neutral, awaiting
another power interruption. Power
interruptions are the signal that tells the
reverse unit to sequence to the next
operational state.
To interrupt power and sequence the
locomotive’s reverse unit, press the direction
control button or turn the throttle to the
OFF position and then ON again. The
reverse unit alternates between these states:
forward, neutral, reverse, and neutral.
Also, the locomotive can be “locked” into
a particular mode of operation by throwing
the reverse unit switch located inside the cab
(see Figure 9). When the switch is thrown to
the OFF position, the locomotive will be
locked in the next mode of operation in the
sequence. For instance, if the locomotive is
moving forward, then is stopped and the
switch is thrown, the locomotive will be
“locked” in neutral. If the switch is thrown
to the OFF position while the locomotive is
under power, the locomotive will remain in
the mode it was in when the switch was
thrown. The controller direction button will
then have no affect on the direction of the
locomotive.
Should the locomotive sit without power
for a short period of time, the reverse unit
will automatically reset and start in the
forward direction when the transformer is
turned on, regardless of the reverse unit
switch position. If the switch is in the OFF
position, the locomotive will start in the
forward direction and be “locked” there.

Locomotive operation
The rear of your Lionel locomotive’s tender is equipped with an operating
magnetic knuckle coupler, a revolutionary
design first introduced by Lionel in 1945.
These magnetic couplers react to the
magnetic field generated by a Lionel
Remote-Control Track section (available
separately, 6-65530 for O gauge, 6-65149 or
6-12746 for O-27 gauge).
Place your locomotive’s tender coupler
trigger disc over the central coil of a
Remote-Control Track section and press
UNCOUPLE on the controller. The magnetic
field pulls the disc downward, and the
knuckle opens as illustrated in Figure 10.
One operating technique favored by Lionel
railroaders is the “moving uncouple.” Press
the UNCOUPLE button as the locomotive
passes over a Remote-Control Track section.
The magnetic field will open the coupler;
the consist remains behind as the
locomotive moves on. But be careful—the
speed of a newly uncoupled and moving
locomotive can increase dramatically.

With Conventional RailSounds, you experience the sounds of real
railroading like never before. Simply put, it’s
the most sophisticated, authentic model
railroad sound system in the world.
Be sure to install a nine-volt alkaline battery
in the tender as illustrated in Figure 11. This
ensures interruption-free operation of the
RailSounds sound system.
Begin by removing the tender body to
access the battery clip. Remove the four
tender body mounting screws and lift the
body shell away. Refer to Figure 11 for the
location of these screws. Snap the battery
into the harness, then lower the battery into
the clip. Finish the battery installation by
replacing the tender body, securing it with
the four screws.

Features of your locomotive’s RailSounds sound system
Whistle. Press the WHISTLE button on
your controller and your locomotive’s
whistle will sound as long as the button is
pressed.
Authentic bell. Press the BELL button on
your controller to start ringing the bell;
press the button again to discontinue the
ringing. Even the final “hit” is muted—just
like the real thing!
Train brakes. Quickly slow down from a
medium speed, and you will hear authentic
braking sounds.
Wheel flange squeal. Depending on your
track layout, you may hear brake sounds to
simulate the sound of wheel flanges against the
rails when you enter a curve.
Shutdown sequence. When you turn off
track power, you will hear an air release
sound. You have seven seconds to power up
your locomotive. If you don’t, RailSounds
will commence with an authentic steam
locomotive shutdown sequence.
A nine-volt alkaline battery must
be installed for your locomotive to
play the shutdown sequence.
Variable chuff rate. The speed of your
locomotive determines the rate of steam
chuffing.
TowerCom announcements. TowerCom
features several “Stand by” and “Clear for
departure” messages from the dispatcher
with responses from the engineer. Each time
TowerCom is triggered, a random message
will be played.
When the train is stopped, a short whistle
blast triggers the first message. If the train
has been stopped for less than 15 seconds, a
“Stand by” message is played. If the train
has been stopped for more than 15 seconds,
a “Clear for departure” message will play.
The 15-second interval is marked by the first
time a CrewTalk message plays auto-
matically after the locomotive has stopped.
CrewTalk communications. These
“call” and “response” radio messages occur
automatically after the train has stopped.
You will hear them at random intervals,
ranging from thirty seconds to three
minutes.

Notes on Conventional RailSounds
• The volume control knob is located on
the underside of the tender. Refer to
Figure 11 on page 17. You will need a
small screwdriver to turn the volume set
screw clockwise or counter-clockwise to
adjust the volume.
• Listen for incidental locomotive sounds
during RailSounds operation. They’re
automatic and, of course, authentic.
• The nine-volt alkaline battery you
installed ensures continuous steam
locomotive sounds. (Use alkaline batter-
ies only.)
• Longer track-power interruptions
(including locomotive derailments)
cause RailSounds to shut down after
about seven seconds.

Maintaining and servicing your locomotive
Your locomotive’s headlight and marker lights are illuminated by one lamp.
During the course of normal operation, the
lamp may require replacement.
Carefully remove the three cab screws (see
Figure 13 on page 20 for their locations),
then lift the body off of the frame. Locate
and unscrew the expired lamp shown in
Figure 12. Replace the lamp with Lionel
part no. 600-2314-300, available from your
authorized Lionel Service Center. (See the
Lionel Service section on page 24 for more
information.) Reinstall the cab and the
three screws, taking care to not pinch any
wires during reassembly.

Adding fluid to your locomotive’s smoke stack
Your locomotive is equipped with a smoke generator that produces safe,
clean, white smoke during operation.
The smoke generator requires the periodic
addition of Lionel smoke fluid in order to
function. Pierce the tube end with a pin,
then add four to eight drops of fluid directly
into the locomotive’s stack. Smoke
production will commence momentarily,
faster if you run your locomotive at speed.
When smoke production wanes, add more
fluid (four to eight drops).
If you prefer smoke-free locomotive
operation, there is a switch located inside the
cab (see Figure 9 on page 15 ). Move the switch
to the OFF position and your locomotive will
stop smoking.
When the smoke unit is on, always keep a
small amount of smoke fluid in the
locomotive’s smoke generator; the generator’s
element can become damaged if operated
without fluid. Smoke production is greater at
higher voltages and when the locomotive is
pulling a heavy load or long consist.

Maintaining and servicing your locomotive

Help your Lionel steam locomotive lead a long and productive life on your railroad
by maintaining it properly. We recommend
that you purchase a Lionel Lubrication and
Maintenance Kit (no. 6-62927), available
from your Lionel dealer. Two basic rules to
keep in mind: never over-lubricate (a small
amount will do), and avoid getting grease or
oil on the steam locomotive’s wheels, contact
rollers, or your track.
You’ll know your steam locomotive
requires lubrication when visual inspection
reveals dryness on the parts indicated in
Figure 13 below. Remove accumulated dirt
and dust before lubricating, and always
lubricate any locomotive emerging from
prolonged storage. Also, lightly lubricate the
steam locomotive’s side rods after every ten
hours of operation.
