Get your train set moving. Press the DIRECTION button on your Lionel
transformer. This command sequences the locomotive’s reverse unit to the next
operating state in the repeating sequence: forward, neutral, reverse, and neutral.
The operation of the headlight and back-up light corresponds with the direction of
the locomotive.
Adjust track voltage until your train set moves at your desired speed. To
increase speed, increase track voltage. To decrease speed, reduce voltage. To stop the
locomotive, turn off track power.
See page 4 for information on locking your locomotive into a single
operational state.
Place your train set on Lionel or Lionel-compatible
O gauge track.

2Power up your locomotive with your transformer.
Your locomotive is designed to operate on 8-18 volts alternating
current. Virtually all Lionel and Lionel-compatible alternating-current
transformers are suitable.
Do not power your locomotive with direct current (DC). Damage to
sensitive electronic components may occur.

The electronic reverse unit inside your Lionel locomotive acts like the transmission in a car. When you apply power to the track, the locomotive moves in the direction specified by the
reverse unit—or it sits in neutral, awaiting another power interruption. Power interruptions
are the signal that tells the reverse unit to sequence to the next operational state.
To interrupt power and sequence the locomotive’s reverse unit, press the direction control
button or briefly bring the throttle lever all the way back to the OFF position. The reverse unit
alternates between three states: forward, neutral, and reverse.
Also, the locomotive can be “locked” into a certain mode of operation by throwing the
reverse unit switch located on the underside of the frame. See Figure 1. To lock your
locomotive into a specific operational state, sequence the locomotive into the desired state and
reduce track power without completely powering down the locomotive, then throw the switch
to the OFF position. The DIRECTION button or other track power interruptions will then have
no affect on the direction of the locomotive. If you would like to resume forward-neutral-
reverse operation, simply throw the reverse unit switch back to the ON position.
Additionally, this reverse unit has a “power-up reset” feature. If the locomotive sits without
power for an extended period of time, the reverse unit will automatically reset and start in the
forward direction when the transformer is turned on or “powered up,” regardless of the reverse
unit switch position. If the switch is in the OFF position, the locomotive will start in the forward
direction and be “locked” there.

The no. 610-5906-001 button works with any Lionel AC transformer except
no. 6-4690 Type MW.
Note!
Press the WHISTLE button on your controller to sound the locomotive's whistle. Be sure that the whistle ON/OFF switch is in the ON position. Refer to Figure 1 on page 4 for the
location of that switch.
If your controller does not have a WHISTLE button, install a Lionel Sound Activation Button
(available separately, part no. 610-5906-001). Connect the button as shown in Figure 2.
If you would like to disable the whistle sounds, throw the whistle ON/OFF switch to the OFF
position.
All track power must feed through the Sound Activation Button. Do not bypass the
button.

Uncoupling your locomotive
Your locomotive is equipped with two magnetic couplers, which are designed for use with Remote-Control Track sections (available separately, 6-65149 or 6-12746 for O-27 gauge;
6-65530 for O gauge; or 6-12020 for FasTrack layouts). To uncouple your locomotive, simply
position the uncoupling trigger over the magnet on the Remote-Control Track section and
press UNCOUPLE on the controller. Also, you may use the rolling stock’s uncoupling tabs, if
the car is equipped with this feature. As illustrated in Figure 3, the magnet will pull down the
uncoupling trigger to release the coupler.

Uncoupling your slag cars
The slag cars feature magnetic couplers. To operate the couplers by hand, slide the uncoupling tab on the side of the coupler arm towards the car. Do not push down on the
tab. To operate the couplers with a Remote-Control Track section (available separately, 6-
65149 or 6-12746 for O-27; 6-65530 for O gauge; or 6-12020 for FasTrack layouts), simply
position the uncoupling trigger over the magnet on the track and press UNCOUPLE on the
controller. Refer to Figure 4 for the locations of the uncoupling tab and uncoupling trigger.

Rotating the slag car buckets
Rotate the bucket by hand to either side of the car. The buckets will not rotate past approximately 90 degrees in either direction.

Adding smoke fluid to the smoke generator
Your locomotive is equipped with a smoke generator that produces clean, white smoke. The smoke unit will operate only if the smoke unit switch is in the ON position. Refer to
Figure 1 on page 4 for the switch location.
The smoke generator requires the periodic addition of smoke fluid in order to function.
Your locomotive includes a bottle of smoke fluid. To add smoke fluid, press down and unscrew
the cap. Pierce the end of the nozzle with a pin, then add four drops of smoke fluid directly to
the locomotive’s stack.
Smoke production will begin when the smoke unit heats up. Increasing track voltage will
cause the smoke generator to smoke faster. When smoke production decreases, add an
additional four drops of smoke fluid. Keep in mind that the locomotive will not smoke while it
is in neutral.
If you prefer to operate the locomotive without smoke, be sure to slide the smoke
unit switch to the OFF position.
When the smoke unit switch is in the ON position, always keep a small amount
of smoke fluid in the smoke generator. The generator’s heating element can
become damaged if it is operated without smoke fluid. This is particularly true if
the locomotive sits in neutral for an extended period of time without smoke
fluid in the generator.

Lubricating your locomotive
Help your Lionel locomotive lead a long and productive life on your railroad by maintaining it properly.
We recommend that you purchase a Lionel Lubrication and Maintenance Kit (6-62927),
available from your Lionel dealer. Two basic rules to keep in mind: never over-lubricate (a
small amount will do), and avoid getting grease or oil on the locomotive’s wheels or your
track. You’ll know your locomotive requires lubrication when visual inspection reveals dryness
on the parts indicated in Figure 5. Remove accumulated dirt and dust before lubricating and
always lubricate any locomotive emerging from prolonged storage.

Replacing the traction tires
Your locomotive is equipped with two traction tires. During the course of normal operations, the traction tires may become worn out. To replace the traction tires, use a
3/16” nut driver to remove the side rod screw. Slip off the worn tire and position the
replacement tire around the wheel. Carefully fit the tire into the groove. Position the side rod,
spacer, and drive rod against the wheel, then secure them in place with the side rod screw. If
you are uncomfortable with this operation, you may choose to have the traction tires replaced
by your authorized Lionel Service Center.

Servicing your locomotive’s lamps
Your locomotive is illuminated by two lamps. During the course of normal operations, you may find that the lamps require replacement. Because of the delicate soldering operations
required, we recommend that you have the lamps serviced at an authorized Lionel Service
Center. Refer to the Service Center list that is included with this unit.
Servicing the slag car lamps
Your slag cars are illuminated by two small lamps. During the course of normal operations, the lamps may require replacement. Lamp replacement should be performed
only by an authorized Lionel Service Center.
