Installation Instructions
Designer-Style RF Maestro® Dimmers,
Switches, and Remotes
HRD-6D, -6ND, -10D, -10ND, -5NE*, -8ANS
HD-RD, -RS
120/127 V ~, 50/60Hz
Operation of a low-voltage circuit with lamps inoperative
or removed may result in transformer overheating and
premature failure. Lutron strongly recommends the
following:
a. Do not operate low-voltage circuits without operative
lamps in place.
b. Replace burned-out lamps as quickly as possible.
c. Use transformers that incorporate thermal protection
or fused transformer primary windings to prevent
transformer failure due to overcurrent.

Wallplates: Lutron Claro®and Satin ColorsTM wallplates
are recommended for best color match and aesthetic
appearance. Do not paint controls or wallplates.
Important Notes
Codes: Install in accordance with all local and national
electrical codes.
Danger: These controls must not be used to
control equipment which is not visible from
every control location. They must also not be
used to control equipment which could create
hazardous situations such as entrapment if operated
accidentally. Examples of such equipment which must not
be operated by these controls include (but are not limited
to) motorized gates, garage doors, industrial doors,
microwave ovens, heating pads, etc. It is the installer’s
responsibility to ensure that the equipment being
controlled is visible from every control location and that
only suitable equipment is connected to these controls.
Overheat Damage: To reduce the risk of overheating and
possibly damaging other equipment, do not install
to control receptacles or motor-operated appliances.
Environment: Ambient operating temperature:
0-40°C, 32-104°F, 0-90% humidity, non-condensing.
Indoor use only. It is normal for dimmers and switches to
feel warm to the touch during operation.
Spacing: If mounting one control above another, leave at
least 4.5" (114mm) vertical space between them.
Lamp Type: -6D, -6ND, -10D and -10ND are designed for
use with permanently installed incandescent, magnetic
low-voltage, or tungsten halogen only. -5NE is designed
for use with permanently installed incandescent or
electronic low-voltage only. -8ANS is designed for use
with all permanently installed lighting loads.
Low-Voltage Applications: Use -6D, -6ND, -10D and
-10ND with magnetic (core and coil) low-voltage
transformers only. Not for use with electronic (solid-state)
low-voltage transformers.
Use -5NE with electronic (solid-state) low-voltage
transformers only. Not for use with magnetic (core and
coil) low-voltage transformers.

Overview
The HRD-6D, -6ND, -10D, -10ND, -5NE dimmers and the
HRD-8ANS switch are for use with HomeWorks systems.
The dimmers and switch may be installed in either single-
pole, 3-way or 4-way applications.
The dimmers may be used with the HD-RD Remote
Dimmer, and the switch may be used with the HD-RS
Remote Switch for control from up to 9 additional
locations.

Multigang Installations
In multigang installations, several controls are grouped
horizontally in one multigang wallbox.
• When combining controls in a wallbox, derating is
required; however, no derating is required for
Remotes.
Note: Controls do not have fins that need to be removed
for multigang installations.
Control Location for Ganging
Cleaning: To clean, wipe with a clean damp cloth. DO
NOT use any chemical cleaning solutions.
Wallboxes: Lutron recommends using 3.5" (89mm) deep
wallboxes for easier installation. Several controls may be
installed in one multigang wallbox - see Derating Chart.
Single Location Installations: When using controls in
single location installations, cut off the uninsulated portion
of the control’s multi-location wire (blue wire) and cap off
using one of the provided wire connectors. DO NOT
connect the blue wire to any other wiring or to ground.
Remotes: Use only Lutron HomeWorks Maestro Remote
Dimmers (HD-RD) with -6D, -6ND, -10D, -10ND, and -
5NE controls. Use only Lutron HomeWorks Maestro
Remote Switches (HD-RS) with -8ANS controls. Up to 9
HD-RD or HD-RS controls may be used with a
HomeWorks RF Maestro Dimmer or Switch. Mechanical
3- or 4-way switches will not work.
RF Device Placement: RF Dimmers and Switches must
be located within 30 feet (10m) of an RF Signal Repeater
or an RF Processor. Remote Dimmers and Switches are
not required to be within a specific range of a repeater or
processor.
RF Dimmers or Switches cannot be controlled by the
system until they are addressed and programmed. See
the HomeWorks Utility online help.

Installation
Short Circuit Check: Check the installation for short
circuits before installing control(s). With power OFF,
install standard mechanical switch(es) between Hot and
load. Restore power. If lights do not work or a breaker
trips, check wiring. Correct wiring and check again.
Install control(s) only when short is no longer present.
Warranty is void if control is turned ON with a shorted
circuit.
Danger - Locate and remove fuse or lock
circuit breaker in the OFF position before
proceeding. Wiring with power ON may result
in personal injury.
1. Turn power OFF at fusebox or circuit breaker.
2. Prepare wires. When making wire connections,
follow the recommended strip lengths and
combinations for the supplied wire connectors.
Note: Wire connectors provided are suitable for
copper wire only.

Single location installation: See Wiring Diagrams 1
and 2 (page 4). When using power boosters or
interfaces, see Wiring Diagrams 5, 6, and 7 (page 5).
Note: When using controls in single location

Up to nine HD-RD or HD-RS remotes may be
connected to the -6D, -6ND, -10D, -10ND, -5NE, or
-8ANS controls.

4. Push all wires back into the wallbox and loosely
fasten the control to the wallbox using the control
mounting screws provided. Do not pinch the wires.
5. Attach Lutron Claro®or Satin ColorsTM wallplate
adapter and wallplate.
a. Loosely install control mounting screws.
b. Tighten wallplate adapter mounting screws
snug.
c. Tighten control mounting screws until
wallplate adapter is flush to wall (do not over-
tighten).
d. Snap wallplate onto wallplate adapter, and
verify that control is not submerged.
e. If control is submerged, loosen mounting
screws appropriately.
6. Restore power. Check for correct local operation (see
page 6).

Local Operation
Pressing the Tapswitch on any Dimmer, Switch, or
Remote will alternately turn the lights ON and OFF.
For -5NE, -6D, -6ND, -10D, -10ND, and HD-RD, the ON
level will be the level previously set using the Dimming
Rocker to the right of the Tapswitch. The LED (on
Dimmer only) that is glowing slightly brighter than the
others indicates the level to which the lights will turn ON.
Press and hold the top or bottom of the Dimming Rocker
to raise or lower the light level. Double-tapping the
Tapswitch (on the Dimmer or the Remote) will turn the
lights ON to full. Pressing and holding the Tapswitch for
1/2 second (while ON) activates a 10-second long fade-
to-off.
Setting High/Low-End Trim (Dimmer Only)
High/Low-End levels may be adjusted with the following
procedure:
a. Press the Dimming Rocker to set the dimmer to the
desired new High/Low-End level (>50% for high-end,
<50% for low-end), and then turn OFF. Note: Middle
LED cannot be used for High-End or Low-End
settings.
b. While pressing and holding the Tapswitch:
1. The dimmer will turn ON to its preset level,
2. The preset LED will light,
3. After 10 seconds, the load will turn OFF and then
back ON,
4. The preset LED will begin to flash quickly (for two
seconds).
c. While the LED is flashing, release the Tapswitch. The
LED will remain ON and the dimmer will be at its
preset level. The High/Low-End value has been
changed.
High/Low-End levels may be restored to their factory
default setting with the following procedure:
a. Press the Dimming Rocker to set the dimmer to >50%
to reset high-end, or to <50% to reset low-end, and
then turn OFF.
b. While pressing and holding the Tapswitch:
1. The dimmer will turn ON to its preset level,
2. The preset LED will light,
3. After 10 seconds, the load will turn OFF and then
back ON,
4. The preset LED will begin to flash quickly (for two
seconds) and then turn OFF. Continue holding the
Tapswitch for at least six seconds after the LED
stops flashing.
c. The load will turn OFF then back ON to its preset
level. The preset LED will flash (for two seconds) and
then remain ON. The default High or Low-End value
has been restored.
Lamp Replacement
For routine lamp replacement, remove power from the
fixture(s) by sliding the Front-Accessible Service Switch
(FASS) to the OFF position (left). After replacing lamps,
slide the FASS back to the ON position (right) to restore
power.
Danger - For any procedure other than routine
lamp replacement, power must be
disconnected at the main electrical panel.

• Circuit breaker OFF or tripped. Perform Short Circuit Check (see page 3).
• FASSTM in the OFF position. Move FASS to the ON position by sliding it to the right. Check both the
dimmer/switch and all of the remote dimmers/switches.

• Wires shorted. Make sure the blue wires are not grounded or shorted to any other wires.
• Wiring error. Check wiring to be sure it agrees with installation instructions and wiring diagrams.
Lamps burned out
• Replace lamps.
Dioded lamps
• If dioded lamps are being used, replace with non-dioded lamps.
Wiring
• Wiring error. Check wiring to be sure it agrees with installation instructions and wiring diagrams.
Tapswitch stuck
• Tapswitch stuck at another location. Check to see that tapswitches are not sticking for all control
locations in the circuit.
Load is less than minimum load requirement
• Make sure the connected load meets the appropriate minimum load requirement for that control. See
Load Specifications (page 1).
Wiring
• Wires shorted. Make sure the blue wires are not grounded or shorted to any other wires.
• Wiring error. Check wiring to be sure it agrees with installation instructions and wiring diagrams.
Wiring

Solid-state control dissipation
• Solid-state dimmers and switches internally dissipate about 2% of the total connected load. It is normal
for dimmers and switches to feel warm to the touch during operation.
