Dear Customer,
with the “K501“ you have purchased a grinder in the well-known
MAHLKÖNIG quality.
Our over 80 years of experience in the production and development of
grinders have helped us to develop a new product in the MAHLKÖNIG
company.
As usual, this product guarantees top-quality by grinding of all types
of coffee.
Before putting the device into service, please read these operating in-
structions including the safety instructions carefully and observe them
at all times. Also instruct your personnel accordingly.
Enclosed you will find many useful tips that will make it easier for you
to use the grinder. Keep these operating instructions in a safe, easily
accessible location. In case of any unclear points or additionally re-
quired information, please contact your local dealer or us directly as
the manufacturer.

1. Safety
Please read and observe the following operating
instructions carefully. Non-observance can result in
damage to the device as well as in health-threaten-
ing risks for the user.
1.1 Symbols
The following two symbols are used in this manual of operating in-
structions:
Safety instruction:
In case of non-observance, extreme risk of accidents
exists.
General instruction:
In case of non-observance, the device can become
damaged or optimum operation not be guaranteed.
1.2 Safety Instructions
Never use the grinding mechanism to grind other products or objects
than coffee beans. Ground material is never allowed to be filled into
the hopper.
Do not carry out any modifications or changes on the grinder. In case of
non-observance, the manufacturer shall be liable for resulting damage
in no case whatsoever.
Never operate the grinder in moist or, even worse, in wet surroundings.
Never put your fingers or objects into the rotating grinding mecha-
nism underneath the hopper.
Always pull the power supply plug out of the outlet before carrying
out any maintenance or cleaning work on the device. Never start the
grinder with a defective power supply cable.
Check the grinder regularly for any signs of damage on the power sup-
ply cable, plug, finger protector, etc. Any repairs that may be required
are only allowed to be carried out by experts. Please contact an au-
thorized customer service centre, your local dealer or us directly as the
manufacturer.
Do not exceed the permissible maximum operating period of 40 min-
utes. Afterwards, allow the motor to cool down for approx. 30– 40 min-
utes.
When unpacking the device, please check to determine whether the
power supply voltage (volts) corresponds to the device voltage on the
rating plate.
Children do not recognize the risks that may arise when handling elec-
trical devices; therefore never leave children alone with electrical de-
vices without proper supervision.
Never immerse the grinder in water and do not op-
erate it with wet hands.

1.3 Purpose of Use
The grinder you have purchased is only allowed to be used to grind
whole coffee beans. Never fill already ground coffee into the hopper.
1.4 User Requirements
No special requirements are specified for the users of this grinder. It
is, however, assumed that this manual of operating instructions has
been carefully read and understood and that all instructions provided
in this manual will be observed. In addition, working with the device on
a safety-conscious basis is also expected.

4. Safety Devices
Thermal overload circuit breaker
The motor of the grinder is protected by an overload circuit breaker,
which interrupts the electric circuit of the motor when the device is
subjected to electric overloading. To be able to re-start the grinder, the
reset button at the back of the casing must be pressed (Pos.9).
The user has no influence whatsoever on this op-
eration. In case of repeated tripping of the circuit
breaker, contact a service partner since this could
cause damage to the motor winding.
Finger protector / Magnet holder
A combined finger protector / magnet holder is fitted in the hopper of
the grinder. It is supposed to prevent the user from reaching into the
running grinding mechanism. At the same time, it also prevents fer-
rous foreign objects from getting into the grinding mechanism. Every
now and then clean the magnet since adhering foreign objects could
block the coffee supply.
Magnet Switch
The key plate with the grind adjustment scale (Pos. 4) is secured by a
magnetic switch. Once that key plate is removed the grinder cannot be
started anymore.
Never remove the finger protection!
5. Set-up and Basic Adjustment
A grinding test run is carried out on each grinder in the factory. This is
why you may find ground coffee residue in the grinding mechanism!
5.1 Setting-up Area
Place the grinder on a level surface free of vibration.
Never operate the grinder in moist, or even worse,
in wet surroundings.
5.2 Installation
You have received your grinder in operating condition. Now you only
need to connect it to a power supply system. Proceed as follows:
Protect your device with a separate pre-fuse (not
included in the scope of supplies) according to the
information provided under 2. Technical data.
Make sure that the pre-fuse is not overloaded by
other consuming devices (e.g. fan forced heaters,
deep freezers).
Determine whether the mains voltage and fre-
quency correspond to the information on the rat-
ing plate.
Insert the plug into the available grounded outlet.

5.3 Basic setting
1. A grinding test can be conducted when the grinder is ready for
operation.
2. The basic setting has been set in the factory and the grinding de-
gree is already set to the finest grind.
For this reason make no alterations, as this could
lead to damage of the grinding discs.
6. Operation
Use the K 501 grinder only in accordance with the instructions listed
under 1.3.
Never place fingers or objects into the grinding
gears!
Never exceed the maximum allowable operating
time of 40 minutes. Afterwards, allow the motor to
cool off for around 30-40 minutes prior to switch-
ing the grinder on again.
Proper operation requires the steps described as follows. When you
have carefully read these operating instructions, you can refer to the
abbreviated instructions located in the grinder lid in the future.
1. Adjust the hopper with the grind adjustment knob (Pos. 3) to the
desired grinding degree. There are 15 positions available
Turn left = fine
Turn right = coarse
2. Open the hopper, observing that the hinge is completely locked
into place. Pour roasted coffee beans into the hopper. Never pour
in coffee powder.
3. Completely open the coffee bag, smooth out the fold creases and
pull it over the spout.
4. Fix the bag with the dual-purpose lever (Pos. 5) by pushing the
lever down. The grinder now begins the grinding process.
5. After the grinding process is completed release the dual-purpose
lever by pushing it up. This simultaneously switches off the grind-
er.
6. Remove the bag now filled with ground coffee from the spout.

7. Operating Faults
Defect
The grinder
hums but does
not grind.
Cause
The spout is
clogged.
Grinding is set
too fine.
A foreign object
is in the grinding
mechanism.
Remedy
Set grinding fineness to
„coarse“ and start the grind-
ing process. The grinder will
then grind itself free. After-
wards, return the setting to
the desired grinding fine-
ness.
Turn the grinding fine-
ness setting to the right,
to „coarse“, and trigger the
grinding process. The grinder
will then grind itself free. Af-
terwards, return the setting
to the desired grinding fine-
ness.
Clean the grinding mecha-
nism as described and re-
move the foreign object. Ob-
serve the safety instructions!
Defect
The grinder does
not start.
Cause
The power sup-
ply plug is not
inserted.
The overload cir-
cuit breaker has
been tripped.
The pre-fuse was
tripped.
Remedy
Insert the plug into the out-
let.
Check whether the reset but-
ton of the circuit breaker has
jumped out. Press the reset
button in again if appropri-
ate. In case of repeated trip-
ping of the circuit breaker,
contact your authorised
customer service centre or
dealer.
Check the pre-fuse. Restore
the pre-fuse to its initial
state or replace it. Determine
whether other consuming
devices are also connected to
this fuse.

Defect
Grinder rotates
but without
grinding.

Turn the shaker rod by 180°.
If this does not improve the
noise, exchange the shaker
rod by dismantling the vi-
brating plate and pulling out
the rod.
Grasp the spout from below
and pull it firmly into the cor-
rect position
In case of other malfunctions or continued faults, please contact your
dealer or your authorised customer service centre.
8. Cleaning
Always pull the power supply plug out of the outlet
before carrying out any maintenance or cleaning
work on the device! Observe the safety instructions
under 1.2!
Avoid allowing foreign objects to fall into the grind-
ing gears!
8.1 Cleaning with GRINDZ™ Grinder Cleaner
We recommend cleaning your shop grinder once a month with our
GRINDZ™ Grinder Cleaner.
Simply take the recommended dose of 70 - 80g and drop it into the
empty grinder hopper (2 caps of the jar / 2 sachets).
Adjust the grind setting to coarse and operate as if grinding coffee
beans. Once complete, we recommend passing twice as much coffee
through to purge any residue.
8.2 Cleaning the Hopper
1. Open the lid.
2. Clean the hopper interior and exterior with a damp cloth only. Do
not rinse. For cleaning, only use cleaning agents approved for food
product applications.
3. To dry, rub the hopper with a dry, non-fluffy cloth.

8.3 Cleaning the Grinder Surface Area
1. Pull out the electrical plug!
2. Tip the grinder to the side and clean the placement surface area
and the bottom of the case.
3. Both surfaces must be dry and oil-and-fat-free.
4. Replace the grinder on its base.
8.4 Cleaning the Grinder Housing
1. Clean the housing and shaker externally from time to time with a
cloth.
2. Observe the safety instructions under 1.2!
Be careful of sharp edges when cleaning. The dan-
ger of injury exists!
9. Maintenance and Repair
Always pull the power supply plug out of the outlet
before carrying out any maintenance or cleaning
work on the device!
Check the device regularly for any signs of damage
on the power supply cable, plug, finger protector,
etc. Any repairs that may be required are only al-
lowed to be carried out by authorized experts.
Please contact an authorized customer service cen-
tre or your local dealer.
9.1 Cleaning of the Grinding Gears
Always remove the electrical plug from the outlet
before conducting cleaning or repair work on the
appliance!
Avoid allowing foreign objects to fall into the grind-
ing gears!
Never reach into the rotating grinder discs with the
fingers or other objects!
For cleaning, use only cleaning agents approved for food product ap-
plications.

1. Pull the key plate with grind adjustment scale (Pos. 4) off the
grinder towards the front. Now the grinder blocked.
2. Dismantle the spout by pushing it up and pulling it towards you
off the grinder body.
3. Turn the hopper/grind adjustment knob to fine and with some
more pressure further to the left until the grinder casing cover is
released.
4. Lift off the hopper together with the grinder casing cover.
Make sure that you do not change the position of the movable compo-
nents within the upper part.
5. For cleaning the disc casing use a brush or a vacuum cleaner. Make
sure to remove all foreign objects from the discs.
6. Replace the cover/hopper on the grinder casing and relock it by
turning it to the right until the insert for the spout is facing to the
front.
Make sure all surfaces touching each other are
completely free of coffee or other particles. If the
discs do not lie plane, the grind adjustment will be
misaligned.
7. Reassemble the spout. Push the two pins into the holes of the disc
casing cover and push it against the grinder body. Pull it down into
place. Reinsert the key plate.
9.2 Grinding Disc Replacement
Always remove the electrical plug from the outlet
before conducting cleaning or repair work on the
appliance!
Avoid allowing foreign objects to fall into the grind-
ing gears!
1. Loosen the grind adjustment knob (Pos. 3) with a 8 mm jaw
wrench and pull off the whole hopper to the top.

2. Pull the key plate with grind adjustment scale (Pos. 4) off the
grinder towards the front. Now the grinder is blocked.
3. Disassemble the spout by pushing it up and pulling it towards you
off the grinder body. (see 9.1)
4. The complete upper part of the disc casing can now be turned to
the left manually and taken off the grinder.
5. In the upper part of the disc casing, unscrew the cover component
to release the disc with the circular spring.
6. Place the new disc making sure the pin of the casing fits into the
gap in the disc. Screw back in the cover.
Make sure all surfaces touching each other are
completely free of coffee or other particles. If the
discs do not lie plane, the grind adjustment will be
misaligned.
Do not screw the cover back in all the way. That
might damage the discs when touching each other
after reassembly. The fine-adjustment is done in
the end (see chapter 9.3).

10. If the disc casing does not sit tightly after reassembly, readjust the
eccentrics by slightly loosening and tightening them again care-
fully with a screwdriver. They tighten automatically when screwed
back on.
11. Reassemble the spout. Push the two pins into the holes of the disc
casing cover and push it against the grinder body. Pull it down into
place. Reinsert the key plate.
7. For the rotary disc in the lower part of the casing place the service
tool on top. It locks in with the three eccentrics. Use the disc key to
loosen the thumb screw in the middle.
Take off the old disc.
When fitting the new disc, make sure that the disc
carrier is completely clean. If the discs do not run
plane, the grind adjustment will be misaligned.
8. Tighten the thumb screw with the special disc key again.
9. Replace the cover of the grinder casing and re-lock it by turning it
to the right until the insert for the spout is facing to the front.

12. Put back on the hopper, turn the grind adjustment to fine and re-
tighten the knob with the black ball.
13. For the readjustment of the fineness, follow the instructions in
chapter 9.3.
Do not start the grinder before re-adjusting the
fineness. The discs might get damaged.
9.3 Re-adjusting the Grinding Fineness
The grinder has been precisely adjusted by the manufacturer. However,
if the ground coffee is no longer fine enough after a longer period, the
grinder must then be re-adjusted according to the following proce-
dure:
1. Turn the hopper to the finest setting.
2. Use the 8 mm jaw wrench to loosen the grind adjustment knob
behind the black ball (Pos. 3).
3. Turn the hopper towards coarse, setting „4“.
4. Now tighten the grind adjustment knob again (manually).
5. Switch on the grinder.
6. Very slowly and carefully turn the hopper to the left towards fine
until you feel some resistance and you hear the discs touch (rat-
tling noise). If you can go all the way to „1“ repeat the process by
loosening the screw again, turn to „4“, tighten the screw and move
back slowly towards „1“.
7. Turn back the hopper one number towards coarse. For coffee
grinder Type K 501T (Turkish coffee) turn the hopper back half a
number.
It is important that you cannot hear a “rattling”
noise of the grinding discs in standard operation!
Otherwise the service life of the grinding discs is
considerably reduced!
8. Loosen the grind adjustment knob again.
9. Carefully turn the hopper back to “1“. The rattling noise should not
occur again.
If the discs touch again when turning the hopper back to „1“, loos-
en the grind adjustment knob further and slightly lift the hopper
when going back to the finest setting. The discs should not touch
each other at the finest setting!
10. Tighten the grind adjustment knob again and fix it with the 8mm
jaw wrench, so it cannot be loosened manually.
11. Now check the correct setting by turning the hopper from posi-
tion “1“ to position “8“ several times. The rattling noise must not
occur again.
12. Switch off the grinder
13. The coffee grinder is now ready for use again and set to the finest
degree of grinding.

12. Warranty Conditions
1. The warranty period is 1 year from the date of purchase.
2. The warranty covers all damages that can be attributed to infe-
rior materials or defective workmanship. Corresponding grinders
will be repaired or replaced free-of-charge, with the exception of
transport or freight charges. Transport is the responsibility of the
customer. Therefore, avoid damages with all returns by correct
packing.
3. The grinder may only be opened for cleaning purposes in accor-
dance with the Operating Instructions.
4. This warranty does not cover damages which have occurred
through: Improper usage, improper maintenance, lack of servic-
ing, usage for purposes other than those intended, incorrect in-
stallation, incorrect voltage, breakage, natural wear or for reasons
beyond our sphere of influence.
5. In order to maintain the warranty, only original spare parts and
accessory parts may be used.
6. Observe in addition our General Delivery Conditions in their re-
spective current version.
7. The manufacturer is in no way liable for consecutive or secondary
damages.
8. The warranty does not cover costs emerging from repairs con-
ducted by non-authorized personnel.
