General Power Tool Safety Warnings

Work area safety
1. Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or
dark areas invite accidents.
2. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmo-
spheres, such as in the presence of ammable
liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks
whichmayignitethedustorfumes.
3. Keep children and bystanders away while
operating a power tool. Distractions can cause
youtolosecontrol.
Electrical safety
4. Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never
modify the plug in any way. Do not use any
adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power
tools.Unmodiedplugsandmatchingoutletswill
reduce risk of electric shock.
5. Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded
surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and
refrigerators. There is an increased risk of elec-
tricshockifyourbodyisearthedorgrounded.
6. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet con-
ditions. Water entering a power tool will increase
the risk of electric shock.
7. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for
carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool.
Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges
or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords
increase the risk of electric shock.
8. When operating a power tool outdoors, use an
extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of
a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of
electric shock.
9. If operating a power tool in a damp location is
unavoidable, use a ground fault circuit inter-
rupter (GFCI) protected supply. Use of an GFCI
reduces the risk of electric shock.
Personal safety
10. Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use
common sense when operating a power tool.
Do not use a power tool while you are tired or
under the inuence of drugs, alcohol or med-
ication. A moment of inattention while operating

11. Use personal protective equipment. Always
wear eye protection. Protective equipment such
asdustmask,non-skidsafetyshoes,hardhat,or
hearing protection used for appropriate conditions
willreducepersonalinjuries.
12. Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the
switch is in the o󰀨-position before connecting
to power source and/or battery pack, picking
up or carrying the tool.Carryingpowertoolswith
yourngerontheswitchorenergisingpowertools
that have the switch on invites accidents.
13. Remove any adjusting key or wrench before
turning the power tool on.Awrenchorakeyleft
attachedtoarotatingpartofthepowertoolmay
resultinpersonalinjury.
14. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and
balance at all times. This enables better control
of the power tool in unexpected situations.
15. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or
jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing, and gloves
away from moving parts.Looseclothes,jewel-
leryorlonghaircanbecaughtinmovingparts.
16. If devices are provided for the connection of
dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure
these are connected and properly used. Use of
dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
Power tool use and care
17. Do not force the power tool. Use the correct
power tool for your application. The correct
powertoolwilldothejobbetterandsaferatthe
rate for which it was designed.
18.
Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn
it on and o󰀨.Anypowertoolthatcannotbecontrolled
with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
19. Disconnect the plug from the power source
and/or the battery pack from the power tool
before making any adjustments, changing
accessories, or storing power tools. Such pre-
ventivesafetymeasuresreducetheriskofstarting
thepowertoolaccidentally.
20. Store idle power tools out of the reach of chil-
dren and do not allow persons unfamiliar with
the power tool or these instructions to operate
the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the
hands of untrained users.
21. Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment
or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts
and any other condition that may a󰀨ect the
power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the
power tool repaired before use.Manyaccidents

22. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean.Properly
maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges

23. Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits
etc. in accordance with these instructions, tak-
ing into account the working conditions and
the work to be performed. Use of the power tool

result in a hazardous situation.
Battery tool use and care
24. Recharge only with the charger specied by
the manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for
onetypeofbatterypackmaycreateariskofre
whenusedwithanotherbatterypack.
25. Use power tools only with specically desig-
nated battery packs.Useofanyotherbattery
packsmaycreateariskofinjuryandre.
26. When battery pack is not in use, keep it away
from other metal objects, like paper clips,
coins, keys, nails, screws or other small metal
objects, that can make a connection from one
terminal to another.Shortingthebatterytermi-
nalstogethermaycauseburnsorare.
27. Under abusive conditions, liquid may be
ejected from the battery; avoid contact. If con-
tact accidentally occurs, ush with water. If
liquid contacts eyes, additionally seek medical
help.Liquidejectedfromthebatterymaycause
irritation or burns.
Service
28. Have your power tool serviced by a qualied
repair person using only identical replacement
parts.Thiswillensurethatthesafetyofthepower
tool is maintained.
29. Follow instruction for lubricating and chang-
ing accessories.
30. Keep handles dry, clean and free from oil and
grease.

SAFETY WARNINGS
Cutting procedures
1. DANGER: Keep hands away from cutting
area and the blade. Keep your second hand
on auxiliary handle, or motor housing. If both
handsareholdingthesaw,theycannotbecutby
the blade.
2. Do not reach underneath the workpiece. The
guardcannotprotectyoufromthebladebelowthe
workpiece.
3. Adjust the cutting depth to the thickness of
the workpiece. Less than a full tooth of the blade
teeth should be visible below the workpiece.
4. Never hold piece being cut in your hands or
across your leg. Secure the workpiece to a
stable platform. It is important to support the
workproperlytominimizebodyexposure,blade
binding, or loss of control.

5. Hold the power tool by insulated gripping
surfaces only, when performing an operation
where the cutting tool may contact hidden
wiring. Contact with a "live" wire will also make
exposed metal parts of the power tool "live" and
could give the operator an electric shock.

6. When ripping, always use a rip fence or
straight edge guide.Thisimprovestheaccuracy
of cut and reduces the chance of blade binding.
7.
Always use blades with correct size and shape
(diamond versus round) of arbour holes. Blades
that do not match the mounting hardware of the saw
willruneccentrically,causinglossofcontrol.
8. Never use damaged or incorrect blade wash-
ers or bolt. The blade washers and bolt were
speciallydesignedforyoursaw,foroptimum
performanceandsafetyofoperation.
Kickback causes and related warnings
—
kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched, bound or
misaligned saw blade, causing an uncontrolled saw to
lift up and out of the workpiece toward the operator;
— whenthebladeispinchedorboundtightlybythe
kerf closing down, the blade stalls and the motor
reactiondrivestheunitrapidlybacktowardthe
operator;
— if the blade becomes twisted or misaligned in the
cut, the teeth at the back edge of the blade can dig
into the top surface of the wood causing the blade
toclimboutofthekerfandjumpbacktowardthe
operator.
Kickback is the result of saw misuse and/or incorrect
operating procedures or conditions and can be avoided
bytakingproperprecautionsasgivenbelow.
9. Maintain a rm grip with both hands on the
saw and position your arms to resist kickback
forces. Position your body to either side of the
blade, but not in line with the blade. Kickback
couldcausethesawtojumpbackwards,but
kickbackforcescanbecontrolledbytheoperator,
if proper precautions are taken.
10.
When blade is binding, or when interrupting a
cut for any reason, release the trigger and hold
the saw motionless in the material until the
blade comes to a complete stop. Never attempt
to remove the saw from the work or pull the
saw backward while the blade is in motion or
kickback may occur. Investigate and take correc-
tive actions to eliminate the cause of blade binding.
11. When restarting a saw in the workpiece, centre
the saw blade in the kerf and check that saw
teeth are not engaged into the material. If saw
bladeisbinding,itmaywalkuporkickbackfrom
the workpiece as the saw is restarted.
12. Support large panels to minimise the risk of
blade pinching and kickback. Large panels tend
to sag under their own weight. Supports must be
placed under the panel on both sides, near the line
of cut and near the edge of the panel.
To avoid kickback, do support
board or panel near the cut.

13. Do not use dull or damaged blades.
Unsharpenedorimproperlysetbladesproduce
narrow kerf causing excessive friction, blade
binding and kickback.
14. Blade depth and bevel adjusting locking levers
must be tight and secure before making cut. If
bladeadjustmentshiftswhilecutting,itmaycause
binding and kickback.
15. Use extra caution when sawing into existing
walls or other blind areas. The protruding blade
maycutobjectsthatcancausekickback.
16. ALWAYS hold the tool rmly with both hands.
NEVER place your hand or ngers behind the
saw.Ifkickbackoccurs,thesawcouldeasilyjump
backwardsoveryourhand,leadingtoserious
personalinjury.
17. Never force the saw. Push the saw forward at a
speed so that the blade cuts without slowing.
Forcing the saw can cause uneven cuts, loss of
accuracy,andpossiblekickback.
Lower guard function
18. Check lower guard for proper closing
before each use. Do not operate the saw if
lower guard does not move freely and close
instantly. Never clamp or tie the lower guard
into the open position.Ifsawisaccidentally
dropped,lowerguardmaybebent.Raisethe
lower guard with the retracting handle and make
sureitmovesfreelyanddoesnottouchtheblade
oranyotherpart,inallanglesanddepthsofcut.
19. Check the operation of the lower guard spring.
If the guard and the spring are not operating
properly, they must be serviced before use.
Lowerguardmayoperatesluggishlydueto
damagedparts,gummydeposits,orabuild-upof
debris.

20. Lower guard should be retracted manually
only for special cuts such as "plunge cuts"
and "compound cuts". Raise lower guard by
retracting handle and as soon as blade enters
the material, the lower guard must be released.
For all other sawing, the lower guard should oper-
ateautomatically.
21. Always observe that the lower guard is cov-
ering the blade before placing saw down on
bench or oor. An unprotected, coasting blade
will cause the saw to walk backwards, cutting
whatever is in its path. Be aware of the time it
takes for the blade to stop after switch is released.
22. To check lower guard, open lower guard by
hand, then release and watch guard closure.
Also check to see that retracting handle does
not touch tool housing. Leaving blade exposed
is VERY DANGEROUS and can lead to serious
personalinjury.
Additional safety warnings
23. Intended use
This tool is intended to cut wood products
only. Accumulated sawdust on the lower guard
andhubfromothermaterialsmaye󰀨ectthe
proper closure of the lower guard which could lead
toseriouspersonalinjury.
24. Use extra caution when cutting damp wood,
pressure treated lumber, or wood containing
knots. Maintain smooth advancement of tool with-
out decrease in blade speed to avoid overheating
the blade tips.
25. Do not attempt to remove cut material when
blade is moving. Wait until blade stops before
grasping cut material.Bladescoastafterturno󰀨.
26. Avoid Cutting Nails. Inspect for and remove all
nails from lumber before cutting.
27. Place the wider portion of the saw base on that
part of the workpiece which is solidly sup-
ported, not on the section that will fall o󰀨 when
the cut is made. As examples, Fig. 1 illustrates
the RIGHT way to cut o󰀨 the end of a board,
and Fig. 2 the WRONG way. If the workpiece is
short or small, clamp it down. DO NOT TRY TO
HOLD SHORT PIECES BY HAND!

28. Before setting the tool down after completing
a cut, be sure that the lower guard has closed
and the blade has come to a complete stop.
29. Never attempt to saw with the circular saw
held upside down in a vise. This is extremely
dangerous and can lead to serious accidents.
30. Some material contains chemicals which may
be toxic. Take caution to prevent dust inhala-
tion and skin contact. Follow material supplier
safety data.
31. Do not stop the blades by lateral pressure on
the saw blade.
32. Do not use any abrasive wheels.
33. Only use the saw blade with the diameter that
is marked on the tool or specied in the man-
ual.Useofanincorrectlysizedblademaya󰀨ect
the proper guarding of the blade or guard opera-
tionwhichcouldresultinseriouspersonalinjury.
34. Keep blade sharp and clean. Gum and wood
pitch hardened on blades slows saw and
increases potential for kickback. Keep blade clean
byrstremovingitfromtool,thencleaningitwith
gum and pitch remover, hot water or kerosene.
Never use gasoline.
35. Wear a dust mask and hearing protection when
use the tool.

IMPORTANT SAFETY
INSTRUCTIONS
FOR BATTERY CARTRIDGE
1. Before using battery cartridge, read all instruc-
tions and cautionary markings on (1) battery
charger, (2) battery, and (3) product using
battery.
2. Do not disassemble battery cartridge.
3. If operating time has become excessively
shorter, stop operating immediately. It may
result in a risk of overheating, possible burns
and even an explosion.
4. If electrolyte gets into your eyes, rinse them
out with clear water and seek medical atten-
tion right away. It may result in loss of your
eyesight.
5. Do not short the battery cartridge:
(1) Do not touch the terminals with any con-
ductive material.
(2) Avoid storing battery cartridge in a con-
tainer with other metal objects such as
nails, coins, etc.
(3) Do not expose battery cartridge to water
or rain.
A battery short can cause a large current
ow, overheating, possible burns and even a
breakdown.
6. Do not store the tool and battery cartridge in
locations where the temperature may reach or
exceed 50°C (122°F).
7. Do not incinerate the battery cartridge even if
it is severely damaged or is completely worn
out. The battery cartridge can explode in a re.
8. Be careful not to drop or strike battery.
9. Do not use a damaged battery.
10. Follow your local regulations relating to dis-
posal of battery.

CAUTION: Only use genuine Makita batteries.
Use of non-genuine Makita batteries, or batteries that
havebeenaltered,mayresultinthebatteryburst-

Tips for maintaining maximum
battery life
1. Charge the battery cartridge before completely
discharged.
Always stop tool operation and charge the bat-
tery cartridge when you notice less tool power.
2. Never recharge a fully charged battery car-
tridge.
Overcharging shortens the battery service life.
3. Charge the battery cartridge with room tem-
perature at 10°C - 40°C (50°F - 104°F). Let a hot
battery cartridge cool down before charging it.
4. Charge the battery cartridge if you do not use
it for a long period (more than six months).

itintoplace.Insertitallthewayuntilitlocksinplace
withalittleclick.Ifyoucanseetheredindicatoronthe
uppersideofthebutton,itisnotlockedcompletely.

Tool / battery protection system
Thetoolisequippedwithatool/batteryprotectionsys-
tem.Thissystemautomaticallycutso󰀨thepowerto
extendtoolandbatterylife.Thetoolwillautomatically
stopduringoperationifthetoolorbatteryisplaced
under one of the following conditions:
Overload protection
This protection works when the tool is operated in a
mannerthatcausesittodrawanabnormallyhighcur-
rent.Inthissituation,turnthetoolo󰀨andstoptheappli-
cation that caused the tool to become overloaded. Then
turn the tool on to restart.
Overheat protection
Thisprotectionworkswhenthetoolorbatteryisover-
heated.Inthissituation,letthetoolandbatterycool
before turning the tool on again.
Overdischarge protection
Thisprotectionworkswhentheremainingbattery
capacitygetslow.Inthissituation,removethebattery
fromthetoolandchargethebattery.

Adjusting depth of cut

CAUTION:
• Afteradjustingthedepthofcut,alwaystighten
theleversecurely.
Loosen the lever on the side of the rear handle and
move the base up or down. At the desired depth of cut,
securethebasebytighteningthelever.
For cleaner, safer cuts, set cut depth so that no more
thanonebladetoothprojectsbelowworkpiece.Using
proper cut depth helps to reduce potential for danger-
ousKICKBACKSwhichcancausepersonalinjury.

Loosen the lever on the bevel scale plate on the front
base.Setforthedesiredangle(0°-50°)bytilting
accordingly,thentightentheleversecurely.Usethe45°
stopperwhenyoudoprecise45°anglecutting.Turnthe
stoppercounterclockwisefullyforbevelcut(0°-45°)
and turn it clockwise for 0° - 50° bevel cuts.
For Model DSS611
Loosen the lever on the bevel scale plate on the front
base.Setforthedesiredangle(0°-50°)bytilting
accordingly,thentightentheleversecurely.

For straight cuts, align the A position on the front of the
basewithyourcuttingline.For45°bevelcuts,alignthe
B position with it.

position when released.

breakage.
Topreventtheswitchtriggerfrombeingaccidentally
pulled,alock-o󰀨leverisprovided.Tostartthetool,
pressthelock-o󰀨leverandpulltheswitchtrigger.
Release the switch trigger to stop.
WARNING:
• Foryoursafety,thistoolisequippedwith
lock-o󰀨leverwhichpreventsthetoolfromunin-
tended starting. NEVER use the tool if it runs
whenyousimplypulltheswitchtriggerwithout
pressingthelock-o󰀨lever.ReturntoolaMAKITA
service center for proper repairs BEFORE fur-
ther usage.
• NEVER tape down or defeat purpose and func-
tionoflock-o󰀨lever.

Electric brake
For Model DSS610 only
This tool is equipped with an electric blade brake. If the
toolconsistentlyfailstoquicklystopbladeafterswitch
trigger release, have tool serviced at a Makita service
center.
Thebladebrakesystemisnotasubstituteforlower
guard. NEVER USE TOOL WITHOUT A FUNCTIONING
LOWER GUARD. SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY CAN
RESULT.
Lighting the lamp
For Model DSS610 only
CAUTION:
• Do not look in the light or see the source of light
directly.
Onlytoturnonthelight,pulltheswitchtriggerwithout
pressingthelock-o󰀨lever.Toturnonthelightandrun
thetool,pressthelock-o󰀨leverandpulltheswitch
triggerwiththelock-o󰀨leverbeingpressed.
NOTE:
• Useadryclothtowipethedirto󰀨thelensof
lamp. Be careful not to scratch the lens of lamp,
oritmaylowertheillumination.
• Do not use gasoline, thinner or the like to clean
the lens of lamp. Using such substances will
damage the lens.
ASSEMBLY
CAUTION:
• Alwaysbesurethatthetoolisswitchedo󰀨and
thebatterycartridgeisremovedbeforecarrying
outanyworkonthetool.
Installing and removing circular saw
blade
CAUTION: Be sure the circular saw blade is
installed with teeth pointing up at the front of the
tool.
CAUTION: Use only the Makita wrench to
install or remove the circular saw blade.
Installing circular saw blade
NOTE:Thecircularsawblademayhavealready
been installed at the time of shipment.
To install the circular saw blade, do the following steps.
1. Loosen the lever on the side of the rear handle
and move the base down.
2. Presstheshaftlockfullysothatthemounting
shaft cannot revolve and use the wrench to loosen the
hexbolt.Thenremovethehexboltandouterange.

4. Press the shaft lock and tighten the hex bolt.
WARNING: BE SURE TO TIGHTEN THE HEX
BOLT SECURELY. Also be careful not to tighten
the bolt forcibly. Slipping your hand from the hex
wrench can cause a personal injury.
WARNING: If the ring is needed to mount the
blade onto the spindle, always be sure that the
correct ring for the blade's arbor hole you intend
to use is installed between the inner and the outer
anges.Useoftheincorrectarborholeringmay
result in the improper mounting of the blade causing
blade movement and severe vibration resulting in
possible loss of control during operation and in seri-
ouspersonalinjury.

Removing circular saw blade
1. Loosen the lever on the side of the rear handle
and move the base down.
2. Presstheshaftlockfullysothatthemounting
shaft cannot revolve and use the wrench to loosen the
hexbolt.Thenremovethehexbolt,outerange,circu-
larsawbladeandring(countryspecic).
3. Whenstoringthetool,installtheouterangeand
lightlytightenthehexboltbyhandtopreventloss.
Blade guard cleaning
When changing the circular saw blade, make sure to
also clean the upper and lower blade guards of accu-
mulated sawdust as discussed in the Maintenance
section.Suche󰀨ortsdonotreplacetheneedtocheck
lower guard operation before each use.

aMakitavacuumcleanertoyourtool.Installthedustnoz-
zle on the tool using the screw. Then connect a hose of the
vacuumcleanertothedustnozzleasshowninthegure.

the upper side of the button, it is not locked com-
pletely.Insertitfullyuntiltheredindicatorcannot

tool,causinginjurytoyouorsomeonearoundyou.
• Be sure to move the tool forward in a straight
linegently.Forcingortwistingthetoolwillresult
in overheating the motor and dangerous kick-
back,possiblycausingsevereinjury.

Ifthetoolisoperatedcontinuouslyuntilthebattery
cartridge has discharged, allow the tool to rest for
15minutesbeforeproceedingwithafreshbattery.

grip and rear handle. Use both to best grasp the tool. If
bothhandsareholdingsaw,theycannotbecutbythe
blade. Set the base on the workpiece to be cut without
theblademakinganycontact.Thenturnthetoolonand
waituntilthebladeattainsfullspeed.Nowsimplymove
the tool forward over the workpiece surface, keeping
itatandadvancingsmoothlyuntilthesawingiscom-
pleted.
