1. Introduction
ACTI-VOC™ (part no. C-LFP-01) is a robust low-ow pump for sampling volatile organic
compounds (VOCs) onto sorbent tubes for subsequent analysis by thermal
desorption (TD). Being lightweight, compact and intrinsically safe, ACTI-VOC is ideal
for personal, workplace and indoor air monitoring.
ACTI-VOC is optimised for sampling onto TD tubes, and automatically compensates
for different impedances, ensuring constant ow rates whatever the sorbent
packing. This automatic compensation prevents the need for re-calibration when
switching between tubes during sampling, minimising down-time – this makes it
ideal for use in Markes’ MTS-32™ multiple tube sampler (part no. MTS-32).
ACTI-VOC is compatible with industry-standard thermal desorption tubes and 6 mm
o.d. tubes, and samples in the region of 20–200 mL/min. ACTI-VOC can also be
used to sample air or gas into Tedlar® bags, and works perfectly with Markes’
SafeLok™ tubes.

CAUTION This product is intended for both indoor and outdoor use when protected
from splashed or wind-blown liquids. The unit is not waterproof, so never

CAUTION Use only the battery pack and chargers specied in this manual. Do not
insert any foreign objects into the contact slot. Shorting contacts will
blow the protective fuse.
CAUTION Do not operate the product with a dirty or blocked inlet lter or kinked
tubing. Pump failure or faulting may result.
CAUTION If the equipment is likely to come into contact with aggressive substances,
then it is the responsibility of the user to take suitable precautions that
prevent it from being adversely affected. Examples of aggressive
substances are acidic liquids or gases that may attack metals, or solvents
that may affect polymeric materials. Examples of suitable precautions
are regular checks as part of routine inspections or establishing from
material data sheets that it is resistant to specic chemicals.

1.5 Warranty
The manufacturer warranty for the ACTI-VOC is 12 months; this includes the battery.
NOTE The warranty becomes void if the cover is removed by anyone other than
a Markes-trained engineer.

1 Air inlet: Located on the pump lter, this provides a built-in means of attaching
tubing for suction sampling.
2 Pump fIlter: A 10 μm nylon air inlet pump lter protects the pump assembly from
dirt.
3 Flow adjustment: Requires a at-bladed screwdriver (provided).
4 Battery check: This green LED (B) indicates that sufcient battery power is
available to run the pump for 8 hours under normal load conditions.
5 ON/OFF switch.
6 Fault indicator: This red LED (F) indicates a ow fault due to excessive back-
pressure or insufcient battery voltage to maintain ow. If ow changes exceed
5%, a fault icon appears. If a fault exceeds 30 seconds, the pump shuts down
and the display will show sample time.
7 Clock display: Shows the continuous run-time (in minutes, to two decimal
places), and will lock-in the sample time upon fault indication. The time will reset
to zero when the power switch is turned OFF and then back ON again.

➑ Outlet port: Provides a receptacle for the bag sampling accessory. The screwcap
prevents dirt from entering the outlet port when not in use.
➒ Bag sampling accessory: Provides a means for lling air sampling bags.
 Base screws: Must remain tight and should be checked prior to beginning
sampling.
 Charging port: Used to connect a charger for recharging the internal battery.
 Belt clip.

 Back-pressure adapter: Gives the required minimum back-pressure the pump
needs for low-ow TD use. Use this in conjunction with the ⅛″ tubing with
standard ¼″ and 6 mm o.d. TD tubes for ows up to 100 mL/min.
 PTFE tubing and TD tube adapter: Use the adapter in place of the back-pressure
adapter when sampling onto SafeLok™ tubes or at ows greater than 100 mL/min.

3. Calibration
Calibration (ow rate verication) must be performed before sampling to ensure the
pump is working efciently, and when setting the ow rate. As the pump is
constant-ow, you need only set the ow rate at the beginning of your sampling
period with the use of a calibration tube – you will not need to re-calibrate when
switching between tubes.
■Ensure the ACTI-VOC is fully charged.
■Attach the PTFE tubing () to the pump and push your sorbent tube for
calibration into the relevant adapter (Figure 2). The sampling arrow on the TD
tube should be pointing towards the pump.
NOTE Use the back-pressure adapter when setting ows up to
100 mL/min; use the PTFE tube adapter when setting ows in
excess of 100 mL/min.

■Connect the sampling end of the TD
tube to a suitable ow-measuring
device, e.g. digital owmeter (part no.
C-FLMTR).
■Turn on the owmeter and the pump,
and adjust the ow on the ACTI-VOC
using the at-bladed screwdriver
provided with the ACTI-VOC (Figure 3).
■ When the desired ow rate has been
reached, turn off the pump and
owmeter, and remove the sorbent tube
used for calibration from the adapter.
■ The pump is now ready for sampling.

4. Sampling
The following sampling workows are recommended for TD applications, where the
pump has been calibrated before use as described in Section 3.
4.1 Personal/workplace monitoring
■Uncap your pre-conditioned TD tube for sampling, using the CapLok tool
provided.
■Place the pump, ⅛″ tubing, appropriate adapter and sample tube on the worker
as shown (Figure 4A), ensuring the sampling arrow on the TD tube is pointing
towards the pump. The tube can be held in position with a penclip (part no.
C-CL010).
■Turn on the pump using the at-bladed screwdriver provided (Figure 4B) and
leave to sample for a given time. Be aware that different analytes will have
different retention volumes on a given sorbent.
■After the sampling period has passed, turn off the pump (Figure 4C) and record
the sample time. This is displayed on the ACTI-VOC in minutes to the nearest
0.01 minutes.

■Remove the TD tube from the tubing adapter and cap with long-term storage
caps (C-CF020). You should do this by nger-tightening each cap, and then
quarter-turning with the CapLok tool provided.
■See CapLok tool ‘how-to’ video for further information.
■Calculate the total air volume sampled using the following formula:

■Your tube is now ready for analysis, and your pump can be used for additional
samples at the same ow rate.
4.2 Indoor air monitoring
■Uncap your pre-conditioned TD tube for sampling, using the CapLok
tool provided.
■Place the pump, ⅛″ tubing, appropriate adapter and sample tube on a level
surface in the atmosphere of interest (Figure 5A), ensuring the sampling arrow
on the TD tube is pointing towards the pump.
■Turn on the pump using the at-bladed screwdriver provided (Figure 5B) and
leave to sample for a given time. Be aware that different analytes will have
different retention volumes on a given sorbent.
■After the sampling period has passed, turn off the pump (Figure 5C) and record
the sample time. This is displayed on the ACTI-VOC in minutes to the nearest
0.01 minutes.
■Remove the TD tube from the tubing adapter and cap with long-term storage
caps (C-CF020). You should do this by nger-tightening each cap, and then
quarter-turning with the CapLok tool provided.

■Calculate the total air volume sampled using the following formula:

5. Maintenance
5.1 Battery
ACTI-VOC uses rechargeable nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries that must be fully
charged and properly maintained to obtain the maximum run time. The battery is
rated at 4.8 V (720 mA h).
WARNING Do not charge the battery in an explosive atmosphere.
CAUTION All NiMH batteries lose charge when not in use. If the battery pack has
not been charged for 3–4 days, recharge it before use. NiMH batteries
stored for extended periods should be recharged every 1–2 months to
avoid complete discharge.
CAUTION Make certain the charger plug is fully inserted into the port on the
battery pack.
CAUTION Ensure the ACTI-VOC is fully charged each time as partial charging can
reduce the battery capacity over time.
CAUTION The charger can be damaged by line transients and overvoltage.
Although this is not a common problem, long-term reliability can be
improved by use of a surge/overvoltage protector.
CAUTION Do not short battery terminals, as this will blow the internal fuse.
NOTES Both charger and battery pack become warm during charging.

The battery pack has an estimated life of 300–500 charge–discharge cycles,
depending on use. The table below shows the estimated battery life based on
usage level.

5.2 Pumplter
A 10 μm nylon air inlet pump lter protects the pump assembly from dirt. Under
normal operating conditions, the pump lter should be changed after approximately
six months or 250 hours of operation, or when needed.
CAUTION Failure to change the lter as it becomes dirty will decrease the pump’s
back-pressure capability and performance range.
To change the pump lter, follow the instructions below:
■ Blow all dust and debris from around the pump lter 2.
■ Grasp the knurled edge of the pump lter and rotate anticlockwise.
■ Check the new pump lter to make sure that the sealing O-ring is present on the
internal boss.
■ Install the new pump lter onto the pump,
rotating the knurled edge clockwise
(Figure 6).
CAUTION Do not overtighten the pump lter.
See Section 6.2 for the relevant part number.

5.3 Back-pressure adapter O-ring
The back-pressure adapter connects the TD tube to the pump using an O-ring seal. It
is recommended that this O-ring is replaced every twelve months, or whenever it is
noticeably damaged.
The replacement process is as follows:
NOTES You will require a replacement O-ring (part no. U-COV10), an O-ring
extraction tool (part no. SER Z-0351), an O-ring insertion tool (part no.
SERZ-0285) and a pair of tweezers.
■Use the O-ring extraction tool to hook out the O-ring (Figure 7A), taking care not
to scratch the groove in which the O-ring is seated, or to damage the white PTFE
insert behind.
■Take the replacement O-ring and compress it slightly into an oval shape
(Figure 7B). Pinch with tweezers and insert halfway into the back-pressure
adapter.
■Use the O-ring insertion tool to push the replacement O-ring into the groove
(Figure 7C).
■Run the O-ring insertion tool around the inner diameter of the O-ring to ensure it
is free from distortions.

5.4 6 mm o.d. tubes
The O-ring in the back-pressure adapter can be replaced with a smaller i.d. O-ring to
allow for use with 6 mm o.d. tubes.
To change the O-rings, see Section 5.3. The O-rings required are supplied with the
ACTI-VOC (part no. U-COV45).
