5.2MountingConfigurations
Modulesmaybemountedat,appropriateorientationtomaximizesunlight
exposure.
Inordertopreventwaterfromenteringthejunctionbox(whichcouldpresenta
safetyhazard),modulesshouldbeorientedsuchthatthejunctionboxisinthe
uppermostpositionandshouldnotbemountedsuchthatthetopsurfacefaces
downward.Wealsowanttoremindthatthewatertightnessisnotensuredby
themodulesbutbythemountingsystemandthatdrainageshouldbewell
designedforACmodules.
Clearancebetweenthemoduleframesandstructureorgroundisrequiredto
preventwiringdamageandallowsairtocirculatebehindthemodule.The
recommendedassemblingclearancebetweeneachmoduleinstalledonany
mountingsystemisaminimumof5mmdistance.
Clearancebetweenthemoduleframeandroofsurfaceisrequiredtoprevent
wiringdamageandtoenableairtocirculatebehindthemodule.Thereforea
minimumof50mmisrequiredbetweenthemoduleframeandtheroofsurface.
Wheninstalledonaroof,themoduleshallbemountedaccordingtothelocaland
regionalbuildingandfiresafetyregulations.Incasethemoduleisinstalledina
roofintegratedPV‐System(BIPV),itshallbemountedoverawatertightandfire‐
resistantunderlaymentratedforsuchapplication
Modulesmountingsystemsshouldonlybeinstalledonbuildingthathavebeen
formallyconsideredforstructuralintegrityandconfirmedtobecapableof
handlingtheadditionalweightedloadoftheModulesandmountingsystems,by
acertifiedbuildingspecialistorengineer.
MaxeonSolarACmodulesareonlycertifiedforusewhentheirfactoryframes
arefullyintact.Donotremoveoralteranymoduleframe.Creatingadditional
mountingholesmaydamagethemoduleandreducethestrengthoftheframe.
Modulesmaybemountedusingthefollowingmethodsonly:
1) PressureClampsorClips:
Mountthemodulewith
theclipsattachedtothe
longersidesofthemodule.
Refertotheallowable
rangesinSection5.0(Table
1andTable2).Installers
mustensuretheclamps
areofsufficientstrengthto
allowforthemaximum
designpressureofthemodule.Clipsandclampsarenotprovidedby
MaxeonSolarTechnologies.Clampsthatsecuretothetopoftheframe
mustnotdeformthetopflange.Clampsmustapplyforcecollinearwiththe
‘wall’ofthemoduleframeandnotonlytothetopflange.Clampsshallnot
applyexcessiveforcetotheframe,warpthetopflange,orcontacttheglass
‐ thesepracticesvoidthemodulewarrantyandriskframeandglass
breakage.Figure1aillustrateslocationsfortopframeclampforce.Avoid
clampingwithin50mmofmodulecornerstoreduceriskofframecorner
deflectionandglassbreakage.Whenclampingtothemoduleframe,torque
shallneverexceed15N.mtoreducechancesofframedeformation.A
calibratedtorquewrenchmustbeused.Mountingsystemsshouldbe
evaluatedforcompatibilitybeforeinstallingspeciallywhenthesystemis
notusingClampsorclips.PleasecontactMaxeonSolarTechnologiesforthe
approvaloftheuseofnon‐standardpressureclampsorclipswheretorque
valuesarehigherthanotherwisestated.
2) EndMount:Endmountingisclipping/clampingofsolarmodulesatthe
cornerofshortsidetothesupportingrail.Theend‐mountingrailandclips
orclampsmustbeofsufficientstrengthtoallowforthemaximumdesign
pressureofthemodule.Verifythiscapacityforboth1)clampsorclipsand
2)endmountingsystemvendorbeforeinstallation.
5.3HandlingofModulesduringInstallation
Neverliftormovethemodulesusingcablesorthejunctionboxunderany
circumstances.Donotplacemodulesfaceforwardindirectcontactwithabrasive
surfacessuchasroofs,driveways,woodenpallets,railings,orwallsetc.Thefront
surfaceofamoduleissensitivetooilsandabrasivesurfaces,whichmayleadto
scratchesandirregularsoiling.
ACModulesarefeaturedwithantireflectivecoatedglassandtheyareproneto
visiblefingerprintmarksiftouchedonthefrontglasssurface.MaxeonSolar
TechnologiesrecommendshandingACModuleswithgloves(noleathergloves)
orlimitingtouchingofthefrontsurface.Anyfingerprintmarksresultingfrom
installationwillnaturallydisappearovertimeorcanbereducedbyfollowingthe
washingguidelinesinSection6.0below.Anymodulecoverage(coloredplastic
tarpsorsimilar)duringinstallationcanleadtopermanentfrontglass
discolorationandisnotrecommended.Theuseofvacuumliftingpadscancause
permanentmarksonthefrontglass.
ShadingincidenceneedtobeavoidedduringPVsystemoperation.Thesystemis
notsupposedtobeenergizeduntilthemountingscaffoldingorrailinghavebeen
removedfromtheroof.
Systemsshouldbedisconnectedinanycasesofmaintenancewhichcancause
shading(e.g.chimneysweeping,anyroofmaintenance,antenna/dish
installations,etc.).
6.0Maintenance
MaxeonSolarTechnologiesrecommendsvisualinspectiononaregularbasisof
ACmodulesforsafeelectricalconnections,soundmechanicalconnection,and
freedomfromcorrosion.Thisvisualinspectionshouldbeperformedbytrained
personnel.Thestandardfrequencyisonceayearaccordingtoenvironmental
conditions.
PeriodiccleaningofACModulesisrecommended,butisnotrequired.Periodic
cleaninghasresultedinimprovedmoduleperformance,especiallyinregionswith
lowlevelsofannualprecipitation(lessthan46,3cm(18,25inches)).Consult
installersupplieraboutrecommendedcleaningschedulesforyourarea.Donot
cleanorspraymoduleswithwaterduringnormaloperation(moduleglasssurface
ishot).Tocleanamodule,sprayitwithpotable,non‐heatedwater.Normalwater
pressureismorethanadequate,butpressurizedwater100bar(min50cm
distance)maybeused.Fingerprints,stains,oraccumulationsofdirtonthefront
surfaceofthemodulemayberemovedasfollows:rinsetheareaandwait5
minutes.Re‐wettheareaandthenuseasoftspongeorseamlessclothtowipe
theglasssurfaceinacircularmotion.Fingerprintstypicallycanberemovedwith
asoftclothorspongeandwaterafterwetting.NEVERuseharshcleaning
materialssuchasscouringpowder,steelwool,scrapers,blades,orothersharp
instrumentsto
cleanmoduleglass.Useofsuchmaterialsonthemoduleswillvoid
theproductwarranty.
