Pum Overview
The Razel R99-E multiple speed syringe pump is ompatible with syringe sizes from 5 to 50
and in ludes a safety shut-off swit h that stops the pump when the end of the syringe is rea hed.
The R99-E has a movable flow rate hart that is used as a guide for determining the swit h
setting ne essary to a hieve the desired flow rate. The flow rates on the movable hart apply
only when using BD Multifit
TM
syringes; however other syringe brands may be used. The R99-E
flow rates range from 0.25 to 143 /hr and the flow rate an be hanged during an infusion.

Automatic Shut-Off Switch
The automati shut-off swit h stops an infusion if the pump rea hes the end of the syringe. In
addition, the green ON/OFF swit h light will turn off and if the pump is equipped with Option F,
the audible alarm will sound.
The automati shut-off swit h uses an internal mi ro-swit h that dete ts when the slide assembly
rea hes a ertain point. This point is adjustable so that the pump an a ommodate various sizes
and brands of syringes.
To adjust the automati shut-off swit h, insert an empty syringe with the plunger at the desired
shut-off position. Move the slide assembly until it omes in onta t with the syringe plunger
(Figure 1.9A). When the pushbutton swit hes are all set to 0, and the pump is turned on, turn
the adjustment s rew (Figure 1.9B) until the green ON/OFF swit h light turns off. Ea h lo kwise
½ turn of the adjustment s rew will ause the swit h to a tivate .025 in hes later, and ea h
ounter lo kwise ½ turn of the adjustment s rew will ause the swit h to a tivate .025 in hes
sooner.
In order to reset the swit h and resume pump operation, squeeze the tabs on the slide assembly,
and move it ba k until the swit h is dea tivated.

Loading a Syringe
Care should be exer ised so that the syringe is positioned orre tly. A urate flow rates annot
be assured if the syringe is not properly loaded. It is important that the slide is making onta t
with the syringe plunger. Complete the following steps to properly load a syringe.
1. Move the slide to the rear (towards the motor) by squeezing the jaws and sliding it ba k, as
shown in Figure 2.1.
Figure 2.1 – Moving the Slide Assembly to the Rear of the Pump
2. Sele t a syringe and fill with the appropriate fluid.
3. Insert the syringe by lifting the lamp over and pla ing the syringe barrel into the lamp, as
shown in Figure 2.2.

S ecialty Syringes
Glass Syringes
Extra aution is needed when using glass syringes with a ground glass plunger. These syringes
exhibit almost no sliding fri tion, and thus an ause an un ontrolled infusion in the following
ways:
1. The weight of the plunger may be suffi ient to push the fluid out of the syringe if the syringe
is held with the plunger above the syringe.
2. The weight of the fluid in the tubing may be suffi ient to siphon the fluid out of the syringe if
the atheter infusion site is below the height of the syringe.
To test for these two onditions, it is re ommended that the syringe be onne ted to the tubing
and held verti ally at the height of the pump. If no motion o urs, the syringe an then be
pla ed in the pump.
The following may redu e the danger of an un ontrolled infusion:
1. Lower the relative height of the infusion pump in relation to the infusion site. With the pump
below the infusion site, the instrument will pump the fluid to the higher elevation.
2. Use a smaller bore atheter, whi h will redu e the weight of the fluid in the tubing and
in rease the fri tion on the flowing fluid.
3. Use a syringe with a rubber seal on the plunger, i.e. an o-ring sealed or plasti syringe.
Small Syringes
Syringes with a apa ity less than five milliliters an be held more se urely in the syringe lamp if
the R-ACC Mi ro Syringe Adapter is used. This adapter slides into the standard syringe lamp and
an hold one mi ro syringe.

the movable hart and set the swit hes a ordingly.
For example, to find the swit h setting ne essary for a flow rate of 25 /hr using a 30 BD
Plastipak syringe:
25 / 0.91 = 27.47 /hr
Lo ate the rate losest to 27.47 /hr on the movable hart, as shown in Figure 0.2. Set the
swit hes to 29 to a hieve a flow rate of 25 /hr using the 30 BD Plastipak syringe.

Other Syringe Brands and Sizes
Syringe brands and sizes not in luded in Figure 0.1 may also be used with the R99-E. The ross-
se tional area of the syringe must be used to al ulate the appropriate swit h setting. The
equation for al ulating the swit h setting is as follows:
For example, if a flow rate of 50 /hr is desired using a 20 Monoje t plasti syringe, the
al ulation is as follows:
Figure 0.3 and Figure 0.4 are lists of ross-se tional areas of various syringes from different
manufa turers. These sizes have some importan e when using a syringe type pump, be ause
of the a ura y of the flow rate is determined by the ubi entimeters of fluid per unit length
of syringe.

Pum Motor
The R99-E pushes a syringe by imparting linear motion through the rotation of a stainless steel
lead s rew. The relationship between rotary speed and linear travel is:
1 revolution = .07692 in hes = .19538 m
The motor is a stepper type and ea h step is .09375°, whi h is equivalent to 3840 steps per
revolution. Thus ea h step is equivalent to .00002003 in hes or .00005088 entimeters of linear
motion.
When the pushbutton swit hes are at the following settings, the orresponding motor speeds and
number of pulses per se ond are:
