The Harmony™ Breastpump
The Harmony is a breakthrough in manual breastpump
technology. It is the first and only manual pump with
2-Phase Expression® technology – a dual pumping
pattern that comes closer than ever to the way a baby
naturally breastfeeds.
The first phase, called the stimulation phase, mimics
a baby’s initial rapid, shallow sucking that encourages
fast let-down. The second phase, the expression phase,
simulates a baby’s more relaxed, deeper sucking that
promotes efficient milk removal.
The Harmony breastpump is the BPA-free manual
pump of choice, preferred by 9 out of 10 moms. All
Medela products that come into contact with breastmilk
are BPA-free.
Your Harmony breastpump is designed to provide you
gentle comfort while pumping. The contoured handle is
ergonomically designed to fit either
hand comfortably. The handle
also swivels, allowing you to
position your hand and the
pump more easily and
comfortably on each breast.
As a one-piece unit, there is
no assembly or extra pieces
to clean and store.

Note: Handle (A) & diaphragm/stem (B) do not need to be
disassembled and cleaned after each use, unless it is apparent the
assembly has become soiled. White o-ring on stem does not need
to be removed.

Before You Begin
Before using your Harmony™ for the first time:
The Harmony sanitized version does not require washing before
first use.
Disassemble parts – refer to diagram on page 3 and
photos on page 5-6. Sanitize in boiling water for 10 minutes.
Prior to each use:
Disassemble the PersonalFit™ breastshield, pump body, valve,
membrane and bottle.
All parts are to be disassembled and washed separately for the
pump to function efficiently.
Under normal use, the pump handle (A) and diaphragm/
stem (B) only need to be cleaned periodically or when it is
apparent they have become soiled. Hint: Do not remove small
white o-ring from stem.
Wash remaining parts in dishwasher or in soapy water and
rinse well. Air dry parts on clean towel and cover when
not in use.
Do not use with Quick Clean™ Micro-Steam™ bags. Wash only
according to the instructions above.
Hygiene:
Wash hands thoroughly before pumping. If your physician
recommends it, clean breast and surrounding area with a
damp cloth. Do not use soap or alcohol, which can dry the
skin and cause cracked nipples.
Using a breastpump should never be uncomfortable. If you
experience any pain, contact your healthcare provider or
lactation specialist immediately.
Single User Caution:
The Harmony breastpump is a personal care item that should
not be shared between users.

1. Remove the PersonalFit™
breastshield (C) from the
pump body (D).
2. Remove the pump handle
assembly (A-B) from the
pump body (D). Check to
see if it needs cleaning.
3. Hold the pump body (D) and
unscrew from the bottle (G).

from pump body (D)
by twisting gently.

(E) from yellow valve (F).

1. Snap white membrane (E)
button into small opening
on yellow valve (F) until
membrane lies completely
flat on valve. (Both parts
should be completely dry
before assembly.)
2. Push yellow valve (F)
securely onto inner ring of
pump body (D).
3. Screw bottle (G) onto pump
body (D).

4. If the handle components
(A & B) have been
disassembled: place the
oval shaped base of the
stem into the diaphragm (B).
Hint: Make sure the oval
shape is lined up correctly
in the diaphragm.
5. Place silicone diaphragm/
stem (B) into pump handle
(A) and press down firmly
around entire edge to ensure
proper seal. The lines on the
diaphragm should line up
with the yellow dots on the
handle.
6. Insert stem of handle
assembly into opening on
top of pump body (D) and
push until you feel it snap in.
7. Insert PersonalFit™
breastshield (C) into
top opening on
pump body (D).

1. Center breastshield over
nipple. Caution: pushing
shield too firmly into breast
may actually reduce milk flow.
2. The adjustable handle can be
positioned for your maximum
pumping comfort. The level of
vacuum is controlled by the
compression and the speed
of the handle stroke. You
decide the pumping rhythm
that is best for you.
3. Start pumping in the
stimulation mode, by pressing
down on the milk drops
symbol on top of the pump
handle. Press and release
quickly until you see milk flow
begin. This mode mimics
baby’s initial rapid sucking
and is designed to stimulate
milk flow/let-down.
4. Once let-down has begun,
switch to the expression
mode by pressing the bottom
of the pump handle. This will
give you a longer stroke that
mimics baby’s deeper, more
relaxed sucking and is
designed to maximize
milk flow.
5. Once you are finished pumping, parts should be
cleaned following directions on page 4.

When to Use the Harmony™ Breastpump
The Harmony Breastpump…
• allows you to pump manually on an occasional
basis. That is, you are available to nurse your
baby for most feedings each day, except
for a few occasions during the week.
• is ideal to collect breastmilk for a feeding
that will be missed due to an evening out.
• is also ideal to relieve occasional breast
engorgement or sore nipples.
When long-term pumping is required, e.g. when the baby
is not available to feed at the breast at least part of the
time each day (a premature infant, for example), it is
recommended that you use a hospital-grade electric
breastpump such as the Symphony® breastpump. This
pump may be rented for short to extended periods of
time, depending upon your needs. For the names

the US or Canada.

Tips for Success and Troubleshooting
1. Prior to pumping, relax, take a few deep breaths and
think of your baby.
2. Using a breastpump should be easy and comfortable.
The first few times may seem a bit awkward, but you
will quickly find your best position and pumping speed.
3. Each mother reaches let-down at a different pace.
Sometimes, you may not need to use the stimulation
mode at all and can start with expression pumping.
4. If you feel the pump is not giving sufficient suction, you
can check several things:
a. Make sure the white membrane (E) lies completely
flat in place on the yellow valve (F) and is clean.
b. Make sure the stem
assembly (B) on the
pump handle is seated
all the way into the pump
body (D) until it will go
no farther. Make sure the
white o-ring is in place in
the stem handle (B).
c. Make sure the pump body (D) is firmly screwed
onto the bottle (G) and that the breastshield (C) is
firmly seated into the pump body (D).
d. Make sure the oval base of the stem (B) is properly
seated in the oval base of the
diaphragm (B).
e. Finally, make sure the diaphragm (B) is pushed all
the way onto the circular rim on the underside of
the handle (A).

Storing and Handling Breastmilk
Storage:
(Please check with your hospital for specific storage
instructions, if needed.)
1. Wash hands before touching
bottles and avoid touching
the interior of bottles or caps.
2. Pump or express into
clean bottles.
3. If you do not intend to use
the expressed breastmilk
within a few days, freeze it.
4. Label bottles with the collection date if you are not
using the milk immediately.
5. Freeze milk in small portions, 2 to 4 ounces per
bottle. Smaller amounts thaw more quickly.
6. When freezing milk, do not fill bottles more than 3/4 full
to allow room for liquid to expand. Cool milk
prior to freezing. Never refreeze breastmilk that has
been frozen.
7. Use solid lids and seal bottles tightly if you intend to
refrigerate breastmilk for several days or freeze it.
8. Refer to the following chart for maximum storage
periods under varying conditions.

Breastmilk Storage Guidelines
Warming/Thawing Breastmilk
1. Place sealed container of frozen or refrigerated
breastmilk in a bowl of warm water for about 30
minutes. Or hold under warm running water.
2. Do NOT thaw breastmilk in a microwave oven. High
temperatures can destroy important nutrients in the
breastmilk and there is a danger of scalding baby.
3. Once thawed or warmed, swirl container to blend
fat, which may have separated during storage. Test
for temperature on the inside of your wrist. It should
be lukewarm.
4. Feed thawed milk immediately or store in refrigerator
for up to 24 hours. Do not let thawed breastmilk sit
out at room temperature.
5. If you are traveling or transporting breastmilk to the
baby’s caregiver, a cooler carrier equipped with ice
packs will help keep breastmilk cool until you reach
your destination.

El sacaleches Harmony es un gran adelanto en lo que
