So, how do babies nurse?
Babies nurse in two distinct phases:
n Fast and light sucking to start your milk flowing.
n A slower, deeper suck to get as much milk as quickly as possible.
Swing contains 2-Phase Expression, Medela’s latest research-based
technology that closely mimics a baby’s actual nursing:
n Phase 1, the stimulation phase, is a rapid rhythm to get
your milk flowing.
n Phase 2, the expression phase, is a slower rhythm for gentle
and efficient expression.
The combination of these two phases leads to
faster let down and milk flow.

IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS
This is a single user product. Use by more than one
person may present a health risk and performance
questions, and voids the warranty.
When using electrical products, especially when
children are present, basic safety precautions should always
be followed, including the following:
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS
DANGER: To reduce the risk of electrocution:
1. Always unplug electrical products immediately after using.
2. Do not use while bathing.
3. Do not place or store product where it can fall or be pulled into a tub or sink.
4. Do not place in or drop into water or other liquid.
5. Do not reach for a product if it has fallen into water. Unplug immediately.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of burns, electrocution, fire or injury to persons:
1. A product should never be left unattended when plugged into an electric outlet.
2. Close supervision is necessary when this product is used by, on, or near children or invalids.
3. Use the product only for its intended use as described in these instructions. Do not use
attachments not recommended by the manufacturer.
4. Never operate this product if it has a damaged cord or plug, if it is not working properly, if it has
been dropped or damaged, or dropped into water.
5. Keep the cord away from heated surfaces.
6. Do not use outdoors or operate where aerosol (spray) products are being used or where oxygen is
being administered.
7. Plug the power cord into the Swing breastpump first and then into wall socket.
8. Only use the power cord that comes with the Swing breastpump.
9. This product is a personal care item and should not be shared among mothers.
10. Make sure the voltage of the power cord is compatible with the power source.
11. Never use while sleeping or when drowsy.
12. Wash the appropriate pump kit parts before each use.
13. If the suction feels uncomfortable or painful, decrease the suction level. If this doesn’t help, turn
product off and remove from your breast. Consult your healthcare professional.
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
1. Make sure breastshield and connector are
securely attached.
2. Snap membrane onto valve until membrane lies
completely flat.
Be sure to take apart membrane from valve when
cleaning, and dry completely before reassembling.
3. Push assembled valve & membrane
onto connector.
4.
Screw container into connector .
5. Insert the round, yellow end of tubing into
opening on the pump body.
6. Insert the triangle, yellow end of tubing into
the triangle port on the motor.

Tip: Once you are finished pumping, unplug tubing from
back of breastshield prior to setting down bottle.
7. Plug the metal end of the power cord into the
AC adapter port as shown. Plug the cord into
a standard electrical outlet.
Battery Operation
Important Note: Remove the batteries if they
are not going to be used for an extended period
of time.
1. Use four (4) AA alkaline batteries.
2. Inserting batteries
a. Remove the battery cover by pushing
the button toward the clip.
b. Place the NEGATIVE (-) end of the
battery against the front of the spring
by pushing the battery in and down
in one motion until the battery snaps
into place.
(The POSITIVE (+) end of the battery should
be near the positive sign in the battery
compartment.)
c. Replace the battery cover.
3. Battery Replacement
a. Each set of fresh batteries will provide approximately 2-4
hours of pumping time.
b. Replace all batteries at the same time.
Important Note: If your breastpump does not turn on, make sure
the batteries have been inserted properly. If this does not solve the
problem, refer to the troubleshooting section of this instruction booklet

Pumping Instructions
Be comfortably seated and relax. Using a footrest, like the Medela
NursingStool®, helps you maintain proper positioning and avoid lower
back stress.
1. Center the breastshield over your nipple.
Note: Do not tilt or overfill containers while
pumping. Take care not to kink tubing while
pumping.
2. Press the on/off button to start Swing™
in the stimulation phase.
3. Adjust the vacuum to your comfort level
while pumping by pressing the increase (+)
or decrease (-) button. Holding down these
buttons will adjust vacuum more rapidly.
Note: The green LCD light will flash rapidly
when you have reached minimum and
maximum pumping settings.
4. After two minutes, the stimulation phase
will automatically change to the expression
phase. If you let-down (your milk starts to
flow) sooner than two minutes, you may
pump more efficiently by pressing the
let-down button at that time. Adjust to your
Maximum Comfort Vacuum™ for most
efficient pumping (see next section for details
on Maximum Comfort Vacuum).

everything you need.
Store your Swing and pump kit (after cleaning and drying) in the
included drawstring bag between pumping sessions to keep it clean
and all in one place.

Wash hands before touching breasts or containers and avoid touching
the inside of containers or lids.
Cleaning
Follow these cleaning instructions unless you are told otherwise by
your healthcare professional.
Maximum Comfort Vacuum™
Research has shown that you will pump more efficiently - meaning get
more milk in less time - when pumping at Maximum Comfort Vacuum in
the expression phase.
1. Begin in stimulation phase
First, start in the stimulation phase of
2-Phase Expression
®
technology (this happens
automatically in Medela 2-Phase Expression
breastpumps, like Swing
™
).
2. Switch to expression phase
Once your milk starts to flow, press the
let-down button on the motor to switch to
the expression phase. If you don’t press
the let-down button manually, the expression
phase will begin automatically after two
minutes.
3. Set your Maximum Comfort Vacuum
Maximum Comfort Vacuum is the highest
vacuum you can use and still feel comfortable,
and is different for every mom. To find your
Maximum Comfort Vacuum: increase vacuum
until pumping feels slightly uncomfortable
(never painful), then decrease slightly.

Important Note: If the temperature in the room, car or outdoors
exceeds 77° F / 25° C, chill milk immediately to preserve freshness.

If milk gets into the tubing:
1. Turn off the pump and unplug from power source.
2. Remove tubing from the pump. Wash in soapy water, then rinse in
cold clear water.
3. Shake water droplets out and hang to air-dry. For faster drying,
attach tubing to the pump and run for 1-2 minutes or until dry, or
pour a small amount of isopropyl alcohol through tubing to dry.
If milk accidentally gets inside the motor unit:
1. Turn off the pump and unplug from power source.
2. See troubleshooting instructions, page 11 part C.
Storing Breastmilk
Check with your hospital for specific storage instructions.
When freezing, do not fill containers more than 3/4 full to allow space
for expansion. Label containers with the date of pumping.
Prior to cleaning, disassemble all parts of your pump kit (PersonalFit™
breastshield, valve, membrane, bottles and caps). Be especially sure to
remove the yellow valve from the breastshield and separate the white
membrane from the valve prior to cleaning. See parts E & F on (page 1).
All pump kit parts, bottles and caps can be cleaned with soap
and water or boiling.
Prior to first use:
Disassemble all parts of your pump kit that come into contact with the
breast and milk (PersonalFit™ breastshield, pump body, valve, mem-
brane, bottles and bottle caps). Sanitize in boiling water for 10 minutes.
After each use:
Disassemble and wash all parts of your pump kit that come into
contact with the breast and milk (PersonalFit breastshield, pump body,
valve, membrane, bottles and bottle caps) in warm, soapy water. All
parts are to be disassembled and washed separately for the pump to
function efficiently.
• Rinse in clear water.
• Air-dry on clean towel and cover parts when not in use.
Do not wash the motor or power cord. Use a damp (not wet) cloth to
wipe down the motor if necessary (see part A on page 1)
Alternatively, use Quick Clean™ Breastpump Wipes or Quick Clean
Micro-Steam™ Bags for easy, convenient daily cleaning.
Tubing Care:
Inspect tubing after each pumping session for condensation and/or milk.
If condensation appears in tubing:
To eliminate condensation after you have completed pumping, continue
running the pump with the tubing attached for another 1-2 minutes or
until dry.

Preparing Breastmilk
Caution: Do not thaw frozen breastmilk in a microwave or in a pan of
boiling water.
• Thaw breastmilk overnight in the refrigerator. Thawed breastmilk
is safe in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Do not refreeze thawed
breastmilk.
• Quickly thaw breastmilk by holding the bottle under warm running
water.
• Place the sealed bottle in a bowl of warm water for 20 minutes to
bring it to body temperature.
• If you are adding expressed breastmilk to a container of already
frozen breastmilk, make sure to add a lesser amount than the
already frozen amount.
Feeding Breastmilk
Warning: Do not microwave breastmilk. Microwaving can cause severe
burns to baby’s mouth from hot spots that develop in the
milk during microwaving. (Microwaving can also change the
composition of breastmilk.)
• Prior to each use, all feeding components must be washed. Follow the
instructions in the cleaning & hygeine section.
• It is recommended that breastfeeding is well established prior to
bottle feeding your baby.
• Always test temperature of milk before feeding your baby.
• Always inspect the bottle, nipple and other components immediately
before and after each use. If nipple appears cracked or torn,
discontinue use immediately.
• To prevent possible choking hazard, test strength of nipple by pulling
on bulb portion of the nipple.
• Do not attempt to enlarge the nipple hole.
• Infants must not be bottle fed without adult supervision.
• Nipple should not be used as a pacifier.

Troubleshooting
A. If There Is Low or No Suction:
1. Make sure all connections of the kit and pump are secure.
2. Make sure the breastshield forms a complete seal around the
breast.
3. Make sure the white membrane is laying flat against the yellow
valve. Check that the yellow valve is clean and not damaged. Refer
to assembly instructions on page 3.
4. Make sure the tubing end fits securely into the pump body & motor.
5. Take care not to kink tubing. If milk is getting into tubing, check
that the tubing is not kinked or pinched.
6. Perform rinsing procedure as described on page 12
(troubleshooting, section C).
B. Pump will not turn on:
1. Make sure pump is plugged in correctly. Pump will NOT turn on if
tubing is plugged into the AC adapter port.
2. Make sure the “on” button is being held between 1 and 3 seconds.
3. Do not repeatedly hit the on/off button, or hold the on/off button
down longer than 3 seconds.
4. If using batteries, make sure transformer is not plugged into pump.
5. If using batteries, make sure batteries are installed correctly
inside pump.

C. If milk accidentally gets into the motor:
Turn off the pump and unplug from the power source.
Use a damp (not wet) cloth to wipe the motor and proceed as follows:
1. Remove battery compartment cover from
bottom of motor.
2. Remove small, black foam piece from bottom
of pump.
3. Rinse the foam piece with clear lukewarm
water, and squeeze out excess water.
Allow to dry thoroughly before inserting
back into pump.
4. Pour about 2 ounces of warm soapy water
into a container.
5. Connect the tubing to the motor, leaving the other end
unconnected.
6. Connect the power cord to the motor, then plug into electrical
outlet (do not power with battery).
7. Hold the end of the tubing that is not connected to the pump in the
container with the soapy water.
8. Place the motor over a dry sink and switch on. The water will pump
through the tubing into the motor and flow out through the opening
beneath the battery cover. Allow it to pump until all the water has
been flushed through.

9. Repeat this procedure again with 2 ounces of warm clear water.
10. Leave the motor switched on for an additional 3 minutes so it dries
completely.
11. As soon as the foam piece is dry, put it in place again, and
re-install the battery compartment cover.
12. If necessary, clean the pump kit according to cleaning instructions.
D. Other troubleshooting:
1. The pump is designed to automatically turn off 30 minutes after last
setting adjustment.
2. When traveling outside the U.S., use battery power only. If you
experience discomfort while pumping, contact a breastfeeding
specialist.

be free from defects in material and workmanship for the period of 1 year
from the date of purchase. In the event of a defect, Medela will repair or, at
Medela’s option, replace this product, without charge for such replacement
parts or labor. Purchaser shall bear all expense for returning this product
to Medela. This warranty does not apply to any product used commercially
or which has been subjected to misuse, abuse or alteration.
ANY AND ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING THE WARRANTY OF
