contained in subsequent chapters.
Maintenance
Use only original replacement parts for maintenance

Chapter 1 – Device description
Intended Use
The reverse osmosis unit is used to produce de-mineralized water and functions according to the reverse
osmosis principle. This process presses water through a semi-permeable RO membrane (osmosis
module) where the salt content of the cold water is reduced by some 95 %.
The inflowing water is separated into two flows:
a) water with a low salt content (permeate)
b) water with increased levels of salt (concentrate) which is disposed of into the effluent system
Mode of functioning
An ion exchanger is connected to the reverse osmosis unit to achieve the level of water quality necessary
for operation of the Cliniclave 45 M/Cliniclave 45 MD, even with poor quality cold water. The ion exchanger
is filled with a mixed-bed resin. The ion exchanger is able to reduce the residual salt content of the
permeate to a minimum. The produced permeate is saved in a pressure tank, which is connected to the
steam sterilizer via a hose. When the pressure tank is filled, the pump and so the cold water supply is
deactivated. All operating runs in the reverse osmosis unit are automatically controlled via the water
pressure.

Requirements of the installation location
The following requirements must be fulfilled:
The installation location is clean and frost-free.
The installation location is accessible for the installation, operation and regular replacement of the
filter.
The hose connections are freely accessible.
Space requirements
The reverse osmosis unit is installed in the floor unit of the Cliniclave 45 M/Cliniclave 45 MD.
Installation
Proceed as follows to connect the reverse osmosis unit:
1. Switch off the steam sterilizer at the power
switch.
2. Remove the caps from the hose connections
on the underside of the steam sterilizer and
the reverse osmosis unit and store them
safely. They could be required for transport
or decommissioning.
3. Remove the valve cap (a) on the rear side of
the pressure tank and measure the primary
pressure with the manometer included in the
scope of delivery. The nominal pressure is
0.6 bar. Should the primary pressure of an
empty pressure tank exceed these values,
reduce the pressure by pressing in the valve
tappet. Following insufficient pressure, this
pressure must be increased using e.g. a foot
pump.

4. Connect the waste water line (b

) and the
cold water line (c1) to the underside of the
steam sterilizer.
5. Only at Cliniclave 45 M: Place the hoses
over the bracket (d) in the rear area of the
steam sterilizer, so that it protrudes from the
floor unit.
6. Lead the waste water line (b
2
) and the cold
water line (c2) through the duct on the right-
hand side of the osmosis unit and connect it
to the corresponding connections on the
osmosis module.
7. Connect the end of the feed water hose to
the free screw connection (e) behind the
manometer.
WARNING
The hoses may not be allowed to suffer
kinking or crushing.
8. Connect the power plug of the reverse
osmosis unit with the power plug of the
steam sterilizer (f) on the underside of the
steam sterilizer and then connect the
bracket.
DANGER
When the steam sterilizer is switched on,
a voltage of 230 V is found on the power
plug of the reverse osmosis unit to the
Cliniclave 45 M/Cliniclave 45 MD.

Rinsing the reverse osmosis unit
Following careful installation, the reverse osmosis unit can be commissioned in accordance with the
following points:
1. Close the manometer shut-off valve.
2. Unscrew the filter housing of the ion
exchanger (a).
3. Remove the mixed-bed resin cartridge and
screw on the empty filter housing to flush the
reverse osmosis unit.
4. Place and hold the free end of the feed
water line in a 5 l container or similar.
5. Switch on the steam sterilizer at the power
switch.
6. Operate the reverse osmosis unit for c.
20 minutes in order to remove all
preservatives and dust residue.
7. Switch off the steam sterilizer.
8. Unscrew the filter housing of the ion
exchanger.
PLEASE NOTE
The filter housing is full to the brim with
water.
9. Remove the water of the filter housing
10. Return the mixed-bed resin cartridge in
accordance with Chapter 4 - Maintenance,
Replacing the mixed-bed resin cartridge
and screw-on the filter housing again.

11. Connect the free end of the feed water line
(b) to the free connection on the underside
of the steam sterilizer in the floor unit.
12. Place the reverse osmosis unit together with
the pressure tank in the floor unit and slide it
backwards to its fullest extent.
WARNING
The hoses may not be allowed to suffer
kinking or crushing.
13. Switch on the steam sterilizer.
14. Check whether the reverse osmosis unit and the hose connections are free from leaks.
15. Open the manometer shut-off valve completely.
16. The first filling of the pressure tank lasts 2-2.5 hours. When the warming Feed water pressure
low disappears on the steam sterilizer display a program can be started.
The reverse osmosis unit now works fully-automatically.
Checking the operational readiness
Operating pressure
Perform a daily check of the pressure on the pressure tank manometer before first program start.

Replace the mixed-bed cartridge in the ion exchanger and then measure
the conductivity of the permeate.
The reverse osmosis unit requires maintenance every 12 months together with the steam sterilizer. This is
to be performed by a service technician who has been trained for this task. The maintenance manual for
the reverse osmosis unit can be found in the maintenance instructions of the steam sterilizer.
Poor local water quality requires bi-annual maintenance of the reverse osmosis unit in accordance with
sections Regular checks and maintenance.
WARNING
Regular replacement of the filter cartridge is required in order to maintain the life-expectancy of
the osmosis module.
Replacing the fine filter (pre-filter)
Replace the cartridge of the mechanical fine filter (pre-filter) once a year. Given a higher degree of turbidity
in the cold water (higher pressure loss), perform this as often as necessary.
1. Switch off the steam sterilizer and close the
pressure tank shut-off valve.
2. Unscrew the filter housing (a) from the filter
body (b) using the filter key. Guide the filter
key upwards from below over the filter
housing and turn the filter key in a clockwise
direction.

The filter housing is full to the brim with
water. Remove the water.

3. Remove the fine filter cartridge (1) and flush the filter housing with tap water.
4. Remove the sealing ring from the filter housing (a).
5. Clean and grease the sealing ring lightly with silicone grease (art. no. 24371).
6. Insert the new fine filter cartridge in the filter housing.

7. Screw on the filter housing lightly with the filter key.
8. Switch on the steam sterilizer and open the shut-off valve at the manometer.
9. Check whether all the parts are secure and that the reverse osmosis unit is free from leaks.
Replacing the activated carbon filter
Replace the cartridge of the activated carbon filter once a year or when replacing the fine filter.
1. Switch off the steam sterilizer and close the
shut-off valve at the manometer.
2. Unscrew the filter housing (a) from the filter
body (b) using the filter key. Guide the filter
key upwards from below over the filter
housing and turn the filter key in a clockwise
direction.
WARNING
The filter housing is full to the brim with
water. Remove the water.

3. Remove the activated carbon filter (1) and rinse the filter housing with tap water.
4. Remove the sealing ring from the filter housing (a).
5. Clean and grease the sealing ring lightly with silicone grease (art. no. 24371).
6. Insert the new activated carbon filter in the filter housing.
7. Screw on the filter housing lightly using the filter key.
8. Switch on the steam sterilizer and open the shut-off valve at the manometer.
9. Check whether all the parts are secure and that the reverse osmosis unit is free from leaks.
Replacing the mixed-bed resin cartridge
If the mixed-bed resin in the ion exchanger is exhausted (poor permeate quality), replace the mixed-bed
resin cartridge. Check the permeate conductivity after every replacement of the mixed-bed resin cartridge.
1. Switch off the steam sterilizer and close the
shut-off valve at the manometer.
2. Unscrew the filter housing (a) from the filter
body (b) using the filter key. Guide the filter
key upwards from below over the filter
housing and turn the filter key in a clockwise
direction.
WARNING
The filter housing is full to the brim with
water. Remove the water.
3. Remove and replace the mixed-bed resin cartridge (1).
4. When inserting a new cartridge, please ensure that the flat seal of the mixed-bed resin cartridge
(1) points upwards (see arrow).
5. Remove the sealing ring from the filter housing (a).
6. Clean and grease the sealing ring lightly with silicone grease (art. no. 24371).
7. Replace the mixed-bed resin cartridge (1) in the filter housing.
8. Screw on the filter housing lightly using the filter key.
9. Remove the permeate line at the filter housing of the ion exchanger (see Fig. 1, pos. 6).

10. Switch on the steam sterilizer.
11. Collect the outflowing water of the filter housing for 5 minutes in a cup.
12. Switch off the steam sterilizer.
13. Determine the conductivity of the water (˂5 µS/cm).
14. Connect the permeate line to the filter housing.
15. Switch on the steam sterilizer and open the shut-off valve at the manometer.
16. Check whether all the parts are secure and that the reverse osmosis unit is free from leaks.
Cleaning the filter insert in the dirt filter
Clean the filter insert of the dirt filter once a year or when replacing the fine filter or the activated carbon
filter. Replace the filter insert where necessary:
1. Switch off the steam sterilizer and close the shut-off valve at the
manometer.
2. Remove the cover of the osmosis module.
3. Remove the dirt filter from the bracket. Loosen both hose screw
connections (1a and 1b).
4. Open the filter housing (3 and 5).
5. Remove the filter insert (4) and the sealing ring (2) from the filter
housing.
6. Check the filter housing (3 and 5) for soiling and rinse out if
necessary.
7. Insert the filter insert (4) and sealing ring (2). Replace a worn
sealing ring.
8. Grease the seal face on the lower filter housing (5) with the
corresponding grease (art. no. 24521).
9. Screw on the filter housings (3 and 5).
10. Connect the dirt filter to the hoses and tighten the hose screw
connections (1a and 1b). Ensure that the arrow points in the flow
direction of the pump.
11. Place the dirt filter in the bracket.
12. Switch on the steam sterilizer and open the shut-off valve at the
manometer.
13. Check whether all the parts are secure and that the reverse
osmosis
unit is free from leaks.
14. Replace the cover of the osmosis module.
