1.1. Description
The E-type pumps in the EVISA series are lubricated-vane vacuum pumps.

The ambient air necessary to the cooling of oil through radiator is sucked in permanently by a turbine directly coupled
with the rotor of the pump.
The gas is sucked in through the suction filter (optional), the protective screen and the built-in valve, to fill the inlet
section of the pump (1). The centrifugal force resulting from rotation of the rotor forces the vanes against the inner wall of
the pump body, thereby forming three chambers leading to a succession of variable volumes that create a vacuum and
flow.

During phase (1), oil is injected for lubrication, sealing and cooling purposes. It can either be injected directly or passed
through an oil filter prior to injection. The gas / oil mixture is delivered from the body through the exhaust valve to the
exhaust unit where a first gas / oil separation takes place. Oil is removed from the gas by coalescence in the separating
filter, then the gas is discharged outside the pump. An automatic drain with float re-injects the oil separated by the
separating cartridge into the body of the pump.
The ambient air necessary to the cooling of oil through radiator is sucked in permanently by a turbine directly coupled
with the rotor of the pump.
When the pump is stopped, the suction valve prevents the entry of air and transfer of oil to the network under vacuum.
Bypassing of the exhaust valve enables the body to be brought to atmospheric pressure to avoid oil accumulating in the
body and thereby prevent irregular oil injection at start-up.
An gas ballast (optional) prevents the condensation of water vapour in the pump in the event of limited vapour suction.

1.2. Applications
These vacuum pumps are used to place under vacuum a process designed to resist vacuum conditions (0.05 mbar
absolute).
The pump operating range extends from atmospheric pressure to the ultimate vacuum rating of the pump in continuous
running.
The use of these pumps is exclusively reserved for the suction of non-aggressive gases, any
damage linked to a different use will not be considered as part of the contractual guarantee, and in
particular:
‐The pumping of gases containing more than 22% oxygen
‐The pumping of corrosive gases
‐The pumping of explosive gases and/or work in an explosive atmosphere (ATEX)
‐The pumping of a substance tending to sublimation
‐The use of lubrication oils other than those validated by the MIL'S SAS company
‐The use of the pump as a compressor.

The temperature of the sucked gas must be between +5°C and +40°C. (For temperatures outside this range, consult
us.). It is imperative to install a paper or polyester filter on suction, whatever the application.
If the gas contains condensable steam, it is mandatory that the pump be equipped with an opened gas ballast and the
pump attain its stabilised operating temperature.
The gas drawn by the pump must not contain any liquid or solid particles. It is necessary to trap them before the pump by
filters, separators and condensers. When using a filter connected to the suction port, this filter must be fixed to the pump
so that no solid particle or liquid can penetrate into the pump during replacement of the filter element. Contact us.
Certain gases can be trapped before the pump by placing a charcoal filter between the paper or polyester filter and the
application.
The surface temperature of certain parts of the pump can exceed +70°C.

SECTION 2. INSTALLATION SITE AND TRANSPORT
2.1. Installation site
The vacuum pump must be installed in an adequately ventilated dust-free and frost-free room.
The ambient temperature must be between +5°C and +40°C.
Consult us for temperatures outside this range.
Ensure that the pump is not installed near heat-radiating equipment or pipes.
If the vacuum pump is to be incorporated in a machine frame, ensure that ventilation is adequate.
The vacuum pump will operate correctly only on a horizontal surface capable of supporting the total
weight of the pump and its accessories. Any operation on an inclined surface may damage the
pump. Moreover, the oil level reading may prove to be incorrect. Make sure to install the pump so
that the name plate, the gas ballast (if present) at least of the oil gauges is visible and accessible.
Pump performance is modified above an altitude of 1000 metres (flow rate and ultimate pressure). Consult us for further
information.

2.3. Long-term shutdown
If the vacuum pump is to remain out of service for a fairly long period of time (more than 3 months) or is not going to be
put into service until a later date, empty the pump, fill it with rust-inhibiting oil, run it for 10 minutes then drain off the rust-
inhibiting oil. Blank the openings with adhesive tape; Close the gas ballast if present
Store the pump in a dry place. The pump must not be stored in a place that is damp and/or subject to large temperature
variations.

2.4. Shipping
The machines must be correctly packed in their original packaging before shipping. It is preferable to secure the package
to a European pallet so that it cannot overturn. The pump must be drained before being shipped.
2.5. Mounting
The vacuum pumps have four silent blocs with tapped holes in the base : 4 x M10.
We recommend that you use these tapped holes to mount the pump on a base frame.
2.6. Handling
Use the lifting rings provided for that purpose. Never place slings under the pump.
SECTION 3. INSTALLATION AND PUTTING INTO SERVICE
3.1. Installation
The suction and discharge ports are protected during transportation by caps and stickers. Remove these protections
before commissioning the pump.
3.1.1. SUCTION
Connect the suction intake to the process, preferably using a hose, after inserting filters if required. The hose must
withstand the final pressure (0.05 mbar absolute). The hose diameter should at least match the connection diameter.
Remember to seal the connections.
To protect the pump, it is recommended to install a filter or a separator upstream, connected to the suction port. This
filter must be fixed on the pump so that no solid particle or liquid falls into the pump when replacing the filter element.
The pump is equipped with a non-return valve enabling to avoid any upwelling of oil if the chamber upstream of the
suction port remains vacuumed when the pump stops. However, this check valve is not a safety device. It is
recommended to isolate the pump from the vacuum network when it is stopped. Install an automatic isolating valve that
closes when the pump stops, or a non-return valve between the pump and the enclosure.
Never run the vacuum pump with a suction port open.
Pump performance will be reduced if the suction pipe is of too small a diameter and/or too long.
3.1.2. EXHAUST
Do not restrict or close the exhaust port. If the discharge is canalized, the section of the piping must
have an inside diameter equivalent to at least that of the pump's discharge port. The pipes must be
sized so that the pressure in the piping connected to the discharge never exceeds 100mbar relative.
If several pumps are connected to the same exhaust piping, the section of the latter must at least be equivalent to that of
the sum of sections of the pumps' discharge ports. The manifold must be designed so that, if condensation forms in the
exhaust piping, it cannot flow suck to one of the pumps. It is recommended to place a draining system at the lowest point
of the discharge piping.
If the discharge is connected to an extraction system, the relative pressure at the pump discharge must not drop
below -50mbar.
Depending on the application, the gases or vapours discharged may be noxious to the health and/or
environment. Respect the current regulations.

3.1.3. FILLING WITH OIL
Remove the oil filler cap and fill up to the middle of the oil level sight situated at the bottom of the oil box.
To use the pump without oil or with an insufficient amount can damage it
The use of not adapted oil can destroy the pump. Using another oil instead of that recommended by
MIL’S engage your responsibility or that of your supplier
3.1.4. ELECTRICAL CONNECTION
It is obligatory for electrical connection to be carried out by a qualified electrician to ensure that it is
done in accordance with the rules of good working practice and in accordance with the current
regulations in the country of use.
The electrical characteristics of the motor must correspond to those of the main power supply (voltage, frequency,
current).
Protect the motor with a magneto-thermal circuit breaker. Select the rating of the circuit breaker with respect to the
current indicated on the motor. The motors are IP 55 class F.
If the thermal magnetic circuit breaker cuts off the power supply to the pump:
‐Find the cause and eliminate it
‐Wait for the oil to cool until it reaches the ambient temperature before restarting the pump
The maximum number of recommended start-ups is limited to 6 per hour (see § 3.2.).
The motors are IP55, class F.
The standard motors are dual voltage: 400V / 690V. Contact us for other voltages.
Types of starting:
Direct starting: the pump can start direct on line, even while being under load, but the in-such current will be very
significant. It is necessary that the electric installation is designed to hold this type of starting.
To check the rotation direction, it's essential to have an over-pressure manual valve.
When checking of the rotation direction, the over-pressure manual valve must be
open. At the end of the operation, the over-pressure manual valve must be closed.
If the over-pressure manual valve is missing, there will be rotor
breaking and motor locking.
Reference of the option : 621715
Star/delta starting: for the "star" period, it is necessary to have a venting
to the atmospheric air between the inlet valve of the pump and the pump
body to ensure the launching of the motor rotation. The bypass diameter
must be at least of dia.25 mm.
Progressive starter: it is necessary to take a progressive starter with a starting booster function in order to give
the maximum torque during few thousandth seconds before attacking the slope of starting.
With a standard progressive starter, it is necessary to envisage a venting to the atmospheric air like previously.
Speed controller: the pump can be started and stopped by a variable speed drive without adding a venting to the
atmospheric air. The solution is rather expensive, but it is most pleasant for the pump.

3.2. Putting into service
If the pump starts on line (direct starting), see §3.1.4.
Before starting the pump, check its oil level (see § 3.1.3.).
Start the pump briefly to check the direction of motor rotation (red arrow on the electric motor). If necessary, change the
direction by switching over the two motor power supply phase wires.
Operation in the incorrect direction of rotation can damage the vacuum pump
Restart the pump and let it run for three minutes, then stop it to top up the oil level if necessary.
In case of pumping condensable steam:
Use open gas ballast.
When restarting after a shut-down of more than an hour, let the vacuum pump heat up, with the suction closed and
gas ballast open, before use. It is advised to follow this recommendation for about 30 minutes.
After use, let the vacuum pump run with the suction port closed and gas ballast open. It is advised to follow this
recommendation for about 30 minutes.
The purpose of this procedure is to limit the formation of condensates inside the pump.
The maximum permissible water vapour pressure (Pwo) and pumping capacity of the water vapour (Cwo) values
indicated in the table of § 1.3 are valid only if the gas ballast is open and if the pump has attained its stabilised operating
temperature, for an ambient temperature of 20°C.
In case of frequent start-ups:
The number of start-ups per hour must not exceed 6.
If possible, leave the gas ballast open when the pump is stopped.
In case of a cyclic process (pumping time less than 2 minutes):
The pump must not be stopped between cycles but must be isolated from the chamber by a valve in order to let it run in
full vacuum. The power consumption of the pump is very low when it runs in full vacuum.
3.3. Servicing and preventive maintenance
Do not dismantle the pump more than necessary during repair, servicing or maintenance operations.
Take every possible precaution to protect the environment. In particular, all waste fluids should be
recovered and recycled. Never dispose of these fluids directly into the environment.
Call on the services of an accredited body in the country where the equipment is used to recycle the
oils, greases and filters.
It is vital during servicing and maintenance operations to take steps to protect against the risks
associated with moving or live parts.
Before performing any servicing or maintenance operation on the pump:
‐The pump must be powered off and electrically locked out.
‐Wait for the oil to cool until it reaches the ambient temperature.
‐Isolate the pump from the application.
Depending on applications, the pump parts may have been contaminated by the substances
pumped. Apply elementary hygiene rules and use suitable personal protective equipment.
These operations are to be performed by qualified and accredited personnel
All rubber seals removed, gasking or O-ring, must be changed.

3.3.1. Specific precaution for Oxygen vacuum pumps
Full caution must be taken to avoid any contact between oxygen and greasy parts (not compatible
with oxygen).
During maintenance operations, all tools, replacement or spare parts, working area and hands must be
degreased.
If accessories, are add, they must be compatible with oxygen.
Oil and greases must be compatible with oxygen.
3.3.2. Oil changes
Check the oil level regularly. Perform the first oil change after the first 500 hours of operation. At the same time change
the oil filter.
Then change oil every: 3000 hours or once a year for MIL'S synthetic oil (MV99S).
Some pumping applications pollute the oil more than others. Only experience enables one to
determine the frequency of oil changes and the choice of oil quality to use. The frequencies
indicated above are usual encountered values.
An oil change is required at least once per year.
Recommended oil:
- special vacuum pump oil,
- general characteristics: rust-inhibiting, anti-oxidant, extreme pressure, anti-foaming, flash point 250°C
The use of a type of oil other than that recommended by MIL'S is under your responsibility and/or
that of your supplier. The use of an unsuitable or immiscible type of oil can cause the pump to be
damaged beyond repair.

For the oxygen version vacuum pumps:
It is imperative to use only compatible oil with oxygen in order to avoid any risk of spontaneous
combustion or explosion.
Oil to be used is oil FOMBLIN (can of 1kg/0.5 liter – reference 361126)
When draining, oil FOMBLIN being chemically very stable, can be filtered then can be re-used with a possible additional
filling until the correct level is reached.
3.3.3. Oil filter
Always replace the oil filter cartridge located at the bottom of the oil box at each oil change
3.3.4. Separating cartridge
The speed at which the separating cartridges get soiled depends on the quantity of impurities sucked in. These
cartridges are not reusable. We recommend replacing them at 3000 hours.
The frequency has to be adapted to suit your pumping application.
Excessive clogging of the separating cartridges will lead to an increase in pressure drop. The flow
will diminish the motor current and pump temperature will increase. The cartridges risk splitting and
the pump will emit fumes through its exhaust.

Assembly instructions :
Remove the nuts (1) and plate (2) with its gasket. Unscrew (3) so as to release and remove the clamping bow (5).
Remove the oil separating cartridge (6).
Reassembly :
Position the tip of the cartridge correctly in the exhaust unit recess so that the O-ring (7) bears against face (A) of the
seat. Reinstall clamping bow (5) and screw in (3) in order to push O-ring (7) up against face (A). Once the new cartridges
are installed, before putting back on the closing plate (2) and if the applications so permits start up the pump to ensure
there are no fumes. If fumes are emitted, one or several cartridges are not correctly positioned: O-ring (7) is not bearing
correctly against face (A). Adjust the installation of the cartridges. Reinstall plate (2) with its gasket. Retighten the nuts
(1).

3.3.5. Suction valve
A screen (1) is in the inlet of the pump. According to the degree of sucked up
impurities, it is to be regularly cleaned by wash or blowing. Replace it if
necessary.
Remove the suction inlet flange (2). Remove and clean screen (1). Replace
the valve (3) and its o’ring (4)
3.3.6. Coupling
The coupling ring is subject to wear that relates to the service conditions
(number of stop/start cycles, temperature, etc.); check the condition of the
coupling ring and the fingers of the 1/2 sleeves that accommodate the ring. If
necessary, replace them by removing the electric motor.
3.3.7. Lip seals
Tightness the rotor shaft outlet is made by lip seals. These seals are subject to wear
that depends on the running conditions. This wear can be characterized by two
phenomena: oil leakage or reduction in the final vacuum due to air intake.
These lip seals (1) rub against a wear ring (2). If you have to replace the wear ring (2),
replace the O-ring (3) at the same time.
Assembly instructions: For the front plate: remove the motor assembly, remove the
rotor shaft 1/2 coupling sleeve. Remove the front plate. Check the condition of wear
ring (2), change it if it’s necessary. Remove the lip seal (1) and fit a new one using a
tool that ensures its perpendicularity with respect to the rotor axis by having
beforehand applying a light coat of glue Loctite 542 to the outside diameter of the lip
seal. The main lip is directed towards the interior of the body. Reinstall the assembly.
For the back plate : remove the fan assembly, remove the back plate and proceed as
before.
3.3.8. Gas ballast filter (optional)
The gas ballast has an air filter and a diaphragm seal that has to be replaced every
3000 hours.
Remove the Aluminium cover (1) and replace the filter element (2), the two o’ring (3)
and the valve.
3.3.9. Air filter (optional)
The rate of clogging of the suction filter cartridge will depend on the amount of impurities sucked in. We recommend
replacing the cartridge every 1000 hours at least. This frequency has to be adapted according to your pumping
application. Clean the inside of the filter.
Charcoal filter: the weight of the charcoal filter provides an indication of its service condition.

3.3.10. Automatic drain
Reminder: This drain re-injects the oil from the separating
cartridges into the pump. It is located in the separating
cartridge compartment (see view in separating cartridge
section - item (8)).
Operating check: Stop the pump. Remove the plate giving
access to the compartment of the separating cartridges. Add a
1/4 litre of oil to the drain: the float should rise. Start up the
pump: the additional 1/4 litre of oil should be sucked in, the
level in the separating cartridge compartment drops.
Maintenance: Remove screws [1] and take the drain assembly out. Drive out the pin [2] then change the float [3] and the
seal [4]; clean the nozzle [5] (blowing). Reinstall the assembly by changing the o’ring [6].
3.3.11. Replacing vanes
Remove the cover. Remove the cooling system, then remove the back
plate. Replace the vanes one by one, taking care to position the vane
chamfer correctly.
3.3.12. Oil level sensor (optional)
It is possible to install a float that
triggers an alarm if the oil level drops. It

The pump must be dismantled. The materials must be sorted, collected, recovered according to current regulations.
The main wastes to be recovered are:

‐DEEE
‐Oil
The collection and recovery must be done by service providers authorised in accordance with the current regulations.

SECTION 4. TROUBLESHOOTING ADVICE IN CASE OF MALFUNCTIONING
Do not dismantle the pump more than necessary during repair, servicing or maintenance operations.
INCIDENT PROBABLE CAUSE
1 - The motor cuts out. 1.1. Mains power supply voltage or frequency incompatible with motor characteristics.
1.2. Check the circuit breaker setting.
1.3. Check the electrical connections.
1.4. The oil is too viscous or the room temperature is too low.
1.5. Rise of pressure in the exhaust unit:
- oil separating cartridge clogged,
- pump exhaust line restricted or blocked.
1.6. Hard spot felt when pump rotated by hand: check the vanes.
2 – The pump flow rate is too
low. 2.1. Pump inappropriate for the application.
2.2. Suction intake screen clogged
2.3. Suction filter (optional) clogged
2.4. Oil separating cartridge clogged.
2.5. Piping too long or diameter too small, causing excessive head loss.
3 – Insufficient vacuum
created. 3.1 Leaks in the vacuum pipes or monitoring and control gear.
3.2 Insufficient lubrication: add oil; or filter clogged.
3.3 Pump too hot.
3.4 Air being taken in at automatic trap (impurities, etc.).
4 – Vacuum pump
overheating. 4.1 Room too small, poorly ventilated or room temperature is too high.
4.2 Insufficient distance between the wall and the pump fan.
4.3 Unsuitable oil.
4.4 Temperature of sucked in gas is too high.
4.5 Start of clogging of the separating filter.
4.6 Exhaust line cross-sectional area too small.
4.7 Poor lubrication: add oil; or oil filter clogged.
4.8 Clean oil cooler.
4.9 Electric fan out of order.
5 – Vacuum pump emits
fumes at exhaust, or oil
consumption is high.
5.1 Separating cartridge incorrectly installed.
5.2 Separating cartridge broken or burst.
5.3 Automatic trap for re-injecting oil is blocked or its float is filled with oil.
5.4 Oil filler cap not properly tightened.
5.5 Vacuum pump overheating.
5.6 Unsuitable oil.
6 – Oil backs up by suction to
vacuum chamber 6.1 Non-return valve faulty.
6.2 Motor running in reverse
7 – Abnormal noises 7.1 Pump makes clicking noise: vanes worn or deformed.
7.2 Metallic noises: fan is touching another part or the cover is touching a
lubrication pipe.
7.3 Oil viscosity too high or oil too cold.
8 – Presence of water in the oil 8.1 Pump is sucking up fluids: trap fluids upstream of pump.
8.2 Install an gas ballast system.
8.3 Pump temperature too low due either to insufficient operating time or because
room is too cold: install a preheating and rinsing system. Consult us for this.
8.4 Exhaust channelled and condensates returning into the pump: install a low
point trap.
