INTRODUCTION
Congratulations on yourpurchase ofa Motorola Memo
EXPRESS alphanumeric pager. This compact
pager incorporates many advances in electronic, mi-
crominiaturization and wireless technology. The
Memo EXPRESS pagerallows youto receivealphanu-
meric messages (words and numbers) instantly and
affordably.
This user’s guide explains how to operate your pager,
and providessuggestions for first-time aswell as expe-
rienced pager users. Familiarity with the user’s guide
assures you get the most from your
Memo EXPRESS
pager. Keep it handy for quick reference.
OPERATING YOUR Memo EXPRESS PAGER
When someone needs to contact you, a call to your
paging service or phone generates a radio signal that
sends messages directly to your
Memo EXPRESS
pager. This signal carries alpha and numeric informa-
tion that can only be received when your pager is on.
ACTIVATION
Paging service providers require certain procedures in
order to activate your new
Memo EXPRESS pager.
Contact your provider to begin paging service.

CONTROLS
Read
W - used to turn the pager on and to display
messages
Mode
U - used to scan pager modes
Select Q - used to select pager functions
After performing any pager functions described in this
manual (settingthe time, date,alarm, etc.), your
Memo
EXPRESS pager automatically returns to the standby
mode andyour selections are activated. Or press Read
W to return to the standby mode and activate your
selections.

TURNING YOUR PAGER ON AND OFF
•Press Read W to turn your pager on. An alert indica-
tor in the upper left-hand corner indicates that the
pager is on and ready to receive messages.
Whenthe pager is on and no activity istaking place,the
standby screen is displayed. The standby screen looks
like this:
•To turn your pager off, press Mode U until TURN
PAGER OFF? is displayed.
•Press Select Q .
The time of day and the date are still displayed on your
pager even when it is off.
SETTING THE CLOCK AND THE DATE
1. Press Mode U until SET TIME? is displayed.
2. Press Select
Q . The hour digits begin to flash.
3. Press Mode
U repeatedly to set the correct hour
digits.
4. Press Select
Q . The minute digits begin to flash.
5. Press Mode
U repeatedly to set the correct min-
utes.

6. PressSelect Q . The A.M./P.M. field begin toflash.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to set your pager for
A.M./P.M., 12/24 hour, and the date.
8. Press Read
W or allow the pager to automatically
return to the standby screen. The time and date are
displayed.
Notes: When adjusting any of the time and date fields,
press and hold Mode
U to fast-forward to your selec-
tion.Toskipafield,pressSelect

get to the desired field. For example, if you only need to
change the date, press Mode
U until SET TIME?
appears, then press Select

SETTING THE INCOMING MESSAGE ALERT
You can set your pager to alert with either an audible
(pleasing alert), a vibrate (vibration with no beep tone),
or a chirp alert (short beep tone).
•Press Mode U until SET ALERT MODE? is dis-
played.
•Press Select Q .
•Press Mode U until your choice is displayed.
•PressSelect Q orRead W .Thealertmodeindicator
is displayed in the upper left-hand corner of the
screen.
The choices are Ä for audible,
D for chirp, or õ for
vibrate (silent).

SETTING YOUR PAGER’S PLEASING ALERTS
You can set your Memo EXPRESS pager to alert with
one of four musical alerts or one standard beep alert.
•Press Mode U until SET ALERTS? is displayed.
•Press Select Q . The current setting is displayed.
•Press Mode U until your choice of ALERT 1, ALERT
2, ALERT 3, ALERT 4 or ALERT 5 is displayed.
•Press Read W to return to the standby screen.
Note: Your pager’s incoming message alert mode must
be set to AUDIBLE in order to choose one of the
pleasing alerts.
READ MODE
This featureallows you to choose themost comfortable
way to view messages.
•PressMode U untilSETREADMODE?is displayed.
•Press Select Q .
•Press Mode U repeatedly until your choice of LINE
BY LINE, SCROLL 1, SCROLL 2, or SCROLL 3 is
displayed, then press Select
Q or Read W .
In the LINE-BY-LINEmode, each screen of a message
is displayed for two seconds.
In the SCROLL mode, messages automatically scroll
across the screen until the entire message is displayed.
SCROLL 1 (slow), SCROLL 2 (medium), and SCROLL 3
(fast) sets the speed at which the message is displayed.
Note: Read messages Line-by-Line when operating
your pager at temperatures below freezing.

READING MESSAGES
When a message is received, the pager alerts with an
audible or a vibrate alert and a flashing message indi-
cator

•Press any button to stop the alert.
•Press Read W to display the message. If there are
additional message screens, the message-continu-
ation arrow N is displayed.
•Press Read W to continue to the next screen.
The time of day the message was received is displayed
at the top of all message screens.
In the LINE-BY-LINE mode, each message screen is
automatically displayed for two seconds.
In the SCROLL mode, messages automatically scroll
across the screen until the entire message is displayed.
•Press Read W to “pause” the message.
•Press Read W again to continue to the end of the
message.
•Press Q to display the next message.
•To activate the pager’s backlight, press and hold
Select
Q for two seconds. The pager displays the
next stored message.
Unread Messages
When unread messages exist, the iconin the upper-left
hand corner of the screen flashes, and the pager vi-
brates or chirps (depending on the current alert mode
selected) every two minutes until all unread messages
are read.

Reading Stored Messages
Your
Memo EXPRESS pager can store up to 15 mes-
sages.
•To reada stored message, press Read W thenpress
Select
Q to move the cursorthrough the messages.

•Press Read W to display the message.
LOCKING AND UNLOCKING YOUR MESSAGES
You can lock up to three messages so they will not be
erased or replaced by new messages. The message
that you wish to lock/unlock must be displayed on the
screen.
•Tolockamessage,pressMode U whilethemessage
is displayed until LOCK PAGE? is displayed.
•Press Select Q . The message symbol © is replaced
by a lock symbol ë .

upper portion of the screen.
•To unlock a message, press Mode U while the mes-
sage isdisplayed until UNLOCKPAGE?is displayed.

ERASING MESSAGES
Erasing Individual Messages
•Press Mode U while the message is displayed until
ERASE PAGE? is displayed.
•PressSelect Q . Themessage symbol © disappears.
All remaining messages are moved to the next avail-
able message slots.
Erasing All Messages
•Press Mode U until ERASE PAGES? is displayed.
•Press Select Q . All read, unlocked messages are
erased from pager memory.

SETTING YOUR PAGER’S ALARM
You can set your pager’s alarm to alert you at a certain
time of day.
•Press Mode U until SET ALARM? is displayed.
•Press Select Q .
Follow the instructionsunder “Setting theClock and the
Date” to set the time for the alarmto sound.
To enable or disable the alarm:
•Press Mode U until SET ALARM? is displayed.
•Press Select Q until you get to the ON/OFF field.
•Press Mode U until your choice of ON or OFF is
displayed.
When the alarm is enabled, Â is displayed on the
standby screen.
Note: The alarm symbol  is displayed even when the
pager is off and the alarm is enabled.

AUTOMATIC ON AND OFF
You can set your Memo EXPRESS pager to automat-
ically turn on and off. This feature can greatly improve
battery life.
To enable:
•Press Mode U until PAGER AUTO? is displayed.
•PressSelect Q . The current setting is displayed and
the symbol ö appears around the alert mode indica-
tor.
To set the on/off times:
•Press Mode U until SET AUTO ON/OFF? is dis-
played.
•PressSelect Q . The current setting is displayed and
the “auto on” time hour digits flash.
Follow the instructionsunder “Setting theClock and the
Date” to set the “turn on” and “turn off” times. The left
series of digits are the “turn on” time. Theright series of
digits are the “turn off” time.
Notes: Only the “hour” can be selected and set for
automaticon/off.Whenoperatingintheautomaticon/off
mode,the pagercan still be manuallyturned on and off.
To disable:
•Press Mode U until PAGER MANUAL? is displayed.
•PressSelect Q . The symbol ö disappears from the
standby screen.

EFFECTIVE USE OF
YOUR Memo EXPRESS PAGER
Your Memo EXPRESS pager can help you keep in
contact with everyone important to you . . . children or
child care providers, business office, data services, and
voicemail.Besurethatyourchildren’sschool,physician,
and friends have the number so that you can be con-
tacted in emergencies.
Give your pager number to family, friends, and associ-
ates to assure contact at any time, any place. When
callingyourpagernumber,theyenterthenumberwhere
they can be reached on a tone-type keypad. This num-
ber is then displayed on your
Memo EXPRESS pager.
Software programs used on a personal computer along
with a modem or stand-alone page-entry device allow
you to receive or send alphanumeric messages. For
example, your children can page you with the message
“At Jimmy’s 555-1234.” You would know where your
children are and the phonenumber in case youneed to
contact them. Contact your service provider or local
software outlet for alpha-entry options.
If you have a cellular phone, give your pager number
instead of your cellular number. Then you can decide
who to call back on your cellular phone, without paying
for incoming cellular calls. The

STANDARD FEATURES
Time of Day/Day and Month: The time of day and the
date and month are displayed whether the pager is on
or off.
UserSelectablePleasingAlerts:Whenthepagerisin
the audible alert mode and a message is received, the
pager alerts with a pleasing musical sound.
Message Lock: Up to three messages can be locked
so that they will not be removed from memory.
AutomaticReset:Pageralerts automaticallystopeven
if you do not press any of the pager’s buttons.
Reminder Chirp: The pager chirps or vibrates every
two minutes until you read all unread messages.
Low-Battery Indicator: When the battery is nearing
the end of its life, the low-battery symbol ó is dis-
played and the pager gives a 2-second alert. Replace
the battery within five days after the first appearance of
the low-battery indicator.
Endless Line Display (Scroll): Messages automat-
ically scroll across the screen until the entire message
is displayed.
Backlight:Inlow-lightconditions,pressandholdSelect
Q fortwosecondswhilereadingamessagetoactivate
the pager’s backlight. The backlight can also be acti-
vatedbypressingSelect
Q whileinthestandbymode.
Timestamp: The time of day that a message was
received is displayed on all screens of the message.
Message Erase: When messages are no longer
needed, they can be erased to free up space for new
messages.
Memory Retention: All messages remain in memory
even when thepager is turned off or when changingthe
battery.
Automatic On/Off:Thepagercanbesettoturnon and
turn off at pre-selected times.

BATTERY INFORMATION
The Memo EXPRESS pager operates with one AAA-
size alkaline battery.
To install the battery, hold the pager in both hands and
use your thumbs to press down on the battery door.
Slide the door until its locking tabs release. Continue
sliding the door until it is free of the housing. Align the
battery so the positive (+) and negative (–) markings
match the direction of the polarity markings. Insert the
battery. To replace the battery door, align the grooves
on the battery door with the grooves on the front and
backhousing.Slidethebatterydooruntilitisfullyclosed
and a “click” is heard. The battery door is self-locking.

PROPER CARE
The Memo EXPRESS pager is durable, reliable, and
can provide years of dependable service, but it is a
precision electronic product. Water and moisture, ex-
cessive heat, and extreme shock may damage the
pager. Do not expose your pager to these conditions.
CLEANING YOUR Memo EXPRESS PAGER
To clean smudges and grime from the exterior of the
Memo EXPRESS pager, use a soft, non-abrasive cloth
moistened in a mild soap and water solution. Use a
second cloth moistened in clean water to wipe the
surface clean. Do not immerse in water. Do not use
alcohol or other cleaning solutions.
REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE
Your Memo EXPRESS pager, properly handled, is ca-
pableofmanyyearsoftrouble-freeoperation.However,
is service is required, Motorola’s National Service Or-
ganization, staffed with specially trained technicians,
offers conveniently located repair and maintenance fa-
cilities throughout the country. Contact your service
provider for more information.
