OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS

DESCRIPTION
An SCBA cannot be up raded until the followin inspec-
tion and all required chan es have been completed.
1997 NFPA COMPLIANCE INSPECTION

stablishing an insp ction program.
Do not inspect the apparatus before cleanin if there
is dan er of contactin hazardous contaminants.
Clean and disinfect first, then inspect. Failure to follow
this precaution may cause inhalation or skin absorp-
tion of the contaminant and result in serious personal
injury or death.
Prior to installation of th ICM Unit 2000 Plus, th SCBA
must b upgrad d to b compliant with th 1997 dition
of th NFPA-1981 standard. Th compon nts must b in
good working ord r, fr of damag and significant w ar.

INTRINSIC SAFETY
ETL approv d intrinsically saf p r UL/ANSI 913 for us in
Class 1, Division 1, Groups A thru D hazardous locations.
Test the ICM Unit 2000 Plus device for proper opera-
tion before each use. Failure to follow this warnin
can result in serious personal injury or death.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Th ICM Unit 2000 Plus attach s to th SCBA gaug
hos . S installation instructions for prop r installation
proc dur s.
Th ICM Unit 2000 Plus turns on automatically wh n th
us r op ns th SCBA cylind r valv . Th GREEN light on
th unit flash s to signal that it is activat d and op rating.
Th ICM Unit 2000 Plus has 3 control buttons:
Th RESET/OFF y llow button r s ts th d vic from th
full alarm mod . It also shuts th unit off aft r th cylind r
valv is clos d and all air pr ssur is bl d from th unit.
Th c nt r r d (alarm) button activat s th full alarm
mod with or without air pr ssur .
Th mod button (gr n) will chang th digital display
window. S th during us s ction for d tails.
Th PASS function us s RED and GREEN light- mitting
diod s (LEDs) to display its status visually:
GREEN LEDs start to flash wh n th cylind r valv
is op n d and shows that th d vic is
op rational.
RED LEDs flash slowly wh n th d vic is in
pr -alarm;
LEDs flash rapidly wh n th d vic is in full
alarm.
Follow th donning proc dur s in th Air Mask instruction
manual to pr ssuriz th syst m. As th pr ssur r ach s
approximat ly 200 psig, both visibl and audibl alarms
activat automatically, indicating that th unit is functional.
Wh n th syst m is fully pr ssuriz d, th alarm nt rs th
Monitor (normal) Mod . Th unit r mains in s nsor mod
until th us r shuts off th cylind r air and pr ss s r s t
button twic in quick succ ssion.
If th us r is motionl ss for approximat ly 18 s conds th
ICM Unit 2000 Plus go s into a pr -alarm. During pr -
alarm, th d vic sounds 3 progr ssiv ly loud r ton s and
th RED light flash slowly. Mov m nt of th unit canc ls
th pr -alarm. If th us r r mains motionl ss for 12 mor
s conds (approx.) th ICM Unit 2000 Plus go s into full
alarm. During full alarm th PASS r p at dly sounds two
high-pitch d ton s follow d by a buzz. During full alarm
th RED lights also flash rapidly.
Th ICM Unit 2000 Plus can b s t into full alarm at any
tim ( v n without air pr ssur ) by pr ssing th alarm but-
ton.

Th ICM Unit 2000 Plus is also a multi-mod , batt ry-

bl and visibl warning that air cylind r pr ssur has
r ach d approximat ly 25% of s rvic lif r mains. Th r
ar two warning indicators:

blink.
• An audibl alarm r p ats singl ton bursts.
INSTALLING THE BATTERY
You must install a 9-volt alkalin batt ry. Us only r com-
m nd d batt ry typ Durac ll NEDA 1604A 9 Volt batt ry
or quival nt.
1. R mov th four scr ws from th batt ry compart-
m nt of th unit.
2. Ins rt batt ry by using instructions insid batt ry com-
partm nt. Ins rt th batt ry bas firmly into th cas ,
th n pr ss down and in on th top of th batt ry.
3. V rify that th batt ry cov r gask t is h ld in plac in
th batt ry cov r.
4. R plac cov r.
5. Ev nly tight n cov r scr ws by moving in an X patt rn
around th cov r. Do not ov rtight n th scr ws. Do
NOT us a thr ad s alant on th scr ws.
Replace the battery when the low battery warnin
sounds. Use only recommended battery type as
defined inside battery compartment. Chan e the bat-
tery in non-hazardous area only.

personal injury or death.

DONNING THE SCBA (AND OPERATING THE ICM UNIT
2000 Plus)
1. Don th SCBA following th instructions in your SCBA
instruction manual.
2. Wh n you op n th cylind r valv to p rform th SCBA
“syst m ch cks,” list n for th ICM Unit 2000 Plus
automatic activation indicator as d scrib d in tabl .
3. Th Audi-LarmTMb ll must ring bri fly as th SCBA is
pr ssuriz d.
4. Look to v rify that th GREEN lights on th unit ar
slowly flashing.
5. Stand motionl ss for about 18 s conds. List n for th
pr -alarm to sound th low volum r p at d ton s.
Look for th RED light to alt rnat ly flash slowly.
6. R main motionl ss until th full alarm activat s. List n
for th alarm to sound th incr asing loud r p at d
ton s. Look for th light to flash RED rapidly.
7. R s t th ICM Unit 2000 Plus by pushing th RESET
button on th sid of th unit 2 tim s within approxi-
mat ly 1 s cond.
8. To ch ck manual activation of th full alarm, push th
alarm button on th front of th unit.
9. R s t th Alarm. Pr ss RESET button 2 tim s within
approximat ly 1 s cond.
10. Stand motionl ss until th pr -alarm sounds. Shak
unit to r s t th alarm.
11. If th ICM Unit 2000 Plus ch cks out, compl t all
r maining SCBA donning st ps in th instruction man-
ual.
12. Crack th bypass valv slowly to bl d off pr ssur
until th gaug n dl drops b low approximat ly;
530 psig - approximat ly (low-pr ssur syst m) or,
750 psig - approximat ly (3000psi Syst m),
1050 psig - approximat ly (high-pr ssur syst m)
Th alarm will sound, th front pan l will flash, and
y llow light will continu until you turn th alarm off.
13. Wh n th pr ssur falls b low 200 psig, turn th alarm
off (Sl p Mod ) by pr ssing th r s t button 2 tim s in
rapid succ ssion.
If the ICM Unit 2000 Plus does not function as
described in the donnin procedure, do not use the
SCBA. The condition must be corrected before usin
the SCBA.
Failure to follow the above warnin can result in seri-
ous personal injury or death.
PRECAUTIONS DURING USE
P riodically ch ck th pr ssur indicat d on th ICM Unit
2000 Plus pr ssur gaug . It continually displays th
cylind r pr ssur . Wh n th n dl r ach s th r d zon ,
th alarm will b gin sounding. Wh n th alarm starts
sounding, or wh n th pr ssur r ach s approximat ly
25% of th rat d s rvic pr ssur , r turn to fr sh air.
Th ICM Unit 2000 Plus r dundant alarm activat s wh n
cylind r pr ssur drops b low a l v l corr sponding to
approximat ly 25% of s rvic tim r maining.
Wh n th ICM Unit 2000 Plus r dundant alarm or audi-
alarm activat s, imm diat ly r turn to fr sh air.
Th ICM Unit 2000 Plus stor s data for downloading to a
comput r through an IR link. MSA s lls a kit that contains
all of th quipm nt n c ssary for that purpos . S your
local MSA sal s associat , your local MSA distributor or
contact MSA custom r s rvic dir ctly at 1-800-MSA-
2222 for d tails.
Th top gr n (mod ) button will illuminat th front pan l
with on pr ss of gr n button, and will chang th digital
display by pr ssing gr n button.
• Actual time remainin may be less than time dis-
played.
• Increases in breathin rate may reduce remainin
time more than expected.
• Use time indicator as eneral uide only.
The time displayed is based on the continuation of the
avera e breathin rate over the last three minutes.
Increases in the breathin rate after checkin the dis-
played time may result in less time than anticipated.
Failure to account for the reduced time can result in
serious personal injury or death.
DOFFING THE SCBA (TURNING THE ICM UNIT 2000
PLUS OFF)
1. Clos th cylind r valv compl t ly and r l as all

tion manual.
2. Wh n th pr ssur falls b low 200 psig, turn th
d vic off by pr ssing th r s t button 2 tim s in rapid
succ ssion.
3. Th ICM Unit 2000 Plus will b p 1 tim wh n th
button is pr ss d onc . Pr ssing th button a s cond
tim will th n sound thr b ps (“b -bop-bop”) to
indicat that th unit is turn d off. Th lights will also
stop flashing.

SPECIFICATIONS
You must turn the ICM Unit 2000 Plus off after you doff
the SCBA. If you do not turn it off, the battery will be
drained.
INSPECTION

lowing th instructions for Donning and Doffing th
SCBA (Turning d vic on and off).
2. If all th st ps ar p rform d succ ssfully, r mov th
SCBA and insp ct th ICM Unit 2000 Plus unit as fol-
lows:
a. Ch ck for xt rnal cracks in th cas or housing.
b. Ch ck for missing scr ws or loos cov rs.
c. Ch ck for signs of l aking cov rs or wat r r t ntion
in th cas .
d. Ch ck rubb r cov r for damag .
. Ch ck for damag d or missing buttons on th unit.
f. Ch ck for any visibl signs of damag to compon nts.
g. Ch ck for prop r op ration of buttons.
h. Ch ck for prop r and s cur attachm nt of all com-
pon nts to th hos and gaug .
If th SCBA pass s all th insp ctions sp cifi d in th
SCBA instruction manual, and th ICM Unit 2000 Plus
pass s all insp ctions sp cifi d abov , th unit is r ady to
b plac d in s rvic .
If th SCBA and ICM Unit 2000 Plus do not m t all
insp ction r quir m nts, th unit must b r mov d from
s rvic until thos conditions which fail d ar corr ct d
and th SCBA is r -insp ct d satisfactorily.
CLEANING, STORAGE AND MAINTENANCE
All repair and replacement of subassemblies must be
carried out by a trained repair person. Do not disas-
semble the ICM Unit 2000 Plus beyond the limits of
this instruction manual. Failure to follow the above
warnin will void the intrinsic safety certification, void
the NFPA & NIOSH certifications and can result in seri-
ous personal injury or death.

soap and wat r. DO NOT APPLY CLEANING SOL-
VENTS.
2. Units contaminat d by ch mical or radioactiv mat ri-
als must b d contaminat d or dispos d of according
to all applicabl r gulatory standards.
3. In th v nt of any malfunction, r turn th unit for
r pair. Contact MSA Custom r S rvic for r turn
authorization.
4. Stor th unit in a dry, v ntilat d ar a at ambi nt t m-
p ratur s consist nt with th batt ry manufactur r’s
r comm ndations.
5. NFPA 1500 as w ll as ANSI Z88.2 and Z88.5 pr scrib
SCBA insp ctions which ar to b p rform d “Aft r
ach us ” and “Monthly”. Th ICM Unit 2000 Plus
insp ctions must also b p rform d during th s
SCBA insp ctions.

ICM UNIT 2000 PLUS DEVICE TECHNICAL SPECIFICA-
TIONS THERMAL ALARM (THERMISTOR)

Th chart shows th ICM Unit 2000 Plus th rmal alarm

on th s v rity of conditions. This may occur v n though
th t mp ratur is abov th th rmal curv .
Althou h this thermal alarm provides an indication
that the time-temperature curve is exceeded, the
curve may not represent the threshold to injury due to
variations in individuals and the protective clothin
worn. Use this alarm as a reference only to increasin
time-temperature. It should not be a substitute for
standard operatin procedures re ardin escape from
time-temperature extremes. Failure to do so can result
in serious personal injury or death.
