KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN
MIOX is a high-tech municipal water treatment system shrunk to fit in your pocket.
The purifier uses ordinary salt, a few drops of water, current from two CR123 Lithium
batteries, and its proprietary technology to create a small batch of mixed oxidant
solution. The treatment, when added to water and given a little time, transforms
questionable water into drinkable water. Required treatment times vary for the
different microorganisms: Viruses and Bacteria, 15 minutes; Giardia, 30 minutes;
Cryptosporidium, 4 hours.
Combining salt and a small amount of
water starts the purification process.
Electrical activation of the
Salt Solution creates potent
mixed oxidants. Add the treatment solution to the
contaminated water, wait a little time, and
you will have drinkable water.

treatment products.
Purifier
A harmless white salt crust around the Salt Chamber may form but can be easily rinsed or wiped off.
Batteries
Buy inexpensive, replacement CR123 batteries in bulk online at www.surefire.com.
Use body heat to warm batteries in below freezing temperature.
To avoid corrosion, only handle batteries with dry hands in a dry environment.
Salt
Use any food-grade salt in the purifier.
Use crystals rather than granules for better water flow and longer use.
Safety Indicator Strips
The Safety Indicator Strips do not need to be used every time water is treated.
Use the strips for these important times:
Use Safety Indicator Strips to learn the operation of the MIOX® Purifier. Use Safety Indicator Strips with
new water sources to establish the correct number of treatments needed for that source. In most cases,
one treatment is enough; however, there are some sources with high mineral, particulate, dissolved
solids, and/or bacterial content that will require additional treatments.
Use Safety Indicator Strips whenever a weather event occurs (rain, etc.) that may change the water
source’s composition.
Do not test tap water not treated with the MIOX Purifier because its chlorine content is not strong
enough to register on strips. Strips measure free chlorine in the specific range produced by the
MIOX Purifier.
Replacements
Buy MIOX® Purifier Replacement Test Strips/Salt with replacement Rock Salt and Safety Indicator Strips
at any local or online MSR dealer.
Water Collection
Use the cleanest water available.
Use a bandana or MugMate™ Coffee/Tea filter to remove solid particles.
Use a Packtowl® or sponge to collect water in very small streams.
To improve the taste of water collected from less clean sources use vitamin C (ascorbic acid) or drink
mixes after waiting the full treatment time.
Operation
The Purifier Cell holds a very small amount of water (less than 1/4 teaspoon).
Cold water does not affect treatment times.
In freezing temperatures the Salt Solution may freeze on the Salt Chamber screen and need to be
rubbed or scratched clean with a fingernail.
Water containing ice may not be effectively treated by MIOX or other disinfectants.
Ice can protect microorganisms.
Purifier Storage Temperature Range -20-160 F / -28-70 C
Remove batteries with dry hands in a dry environment before long-term storage.
Rinse and dry inside of Purifier Cell and Salt Chamber before
long-term storage.

WARNING
Do not use seawater. MIOX does not make drinkable water out of salty or
brackish water. Choose cleanest water available. Avoid water sources with high
levels of chemical contamination, such as mining tailing ponds and sources near
large agricultural operations. MIOX does not effectively reduce heavy metals or
high levels of chemical contamination. Know how to effectively use this product to
create clean, drinkable water.
WARNING
Do not wait more than 15 seconds to read the strip or the color may fade.
Do not reuse the test strips if they have turned purple.
WARNING
Do not touch your eyes while using the purifier. MIOX creates a chemical oxidant
that can damage your eyes. The same oxidant can also irritate skin and perma-
nently stain clothing. Keep at least 12 inches (30 cm) away from your face and
clothing during Step 4. Rinse purifier and hands after use.
Also, see First Aid.
WARNING
Wait the full appropriate treatment time. Do not add more water to the container
after the treatment process. Adding water after this step will dilute the strength of
the treatment solution and increase the risk of contamination. Do not add drink
mixes to treated water before treatment time is complete or treatment process may
stop. To prevent drinking any contaminated water, the threads on the container
and the cap must be rinsed with treated water.
