SUBJECT: LC800 Shelf Life of Toner/OPC Cartridges
Q: What is the operating life and shelf life of the NEC OPC Cartridge and NEC Toner?
A: Optical Photoconductor Cartridge
Operating Life: 7000 pages
ShelfLife: 2 years
Toner Cartridge
Operating Life: 3000 pages
ShelfLife: 2 years
SUBJECT: OPC Cartridge Life
Q: What is the average life of the OPC cartridge and are there any special handling procedures.
A: The expected average life of the OPC cartridge is approximately 7,000 printer pages or 4 toner refills, which ever occurs first.
Recognizable signs that the OPC cartridge needs replacing:
* Characters are faded or clipped
* Background is blurry or contains black stripe (Note: Be sure to clean the led head)
* Pages are dirty (i.e. gray background etc.)
OPC Cartridge DONT’S
* The quality of output obtained from an LC800 series printer can be influenced in the handling of the OPC
* Foreign objects can scratch or mar the surface of the OPC.
* The OPC drum cannot be exposed to light indefinitely without being damaged. We recommend not exposing the OPC to
light for more than approximately 60 seconds. However, tests have shown no adverse affects when exposed to 5-10 times
that amount.
* Do not touch the OPC drum; finger prints will appear on your output.
Storage
The OPC cartridge should be stored in the shipping case provided.
SUBJECT: LC800 OPC Page Count Set
Q: Why does the LC800 flash “PC LIFE” after the OPC has been replaced and how do you reset the page count?
A: The reason the LC800 flashes “PC LIFE” is because the page count has not been reset. When replacing the OPC with a new
OPC, the LC800 needs to be powered on. Before placing the new OPC into the LC800, press the PC Reset button (lower right
hand corner) and place the new OPC into the printer. Close the hood assembly and release the PC Reset button. This procedure
resets the page count. To verify if the page count has been reset, turn off the LC800. Hold down the SELECT and NEXT buttons
and then power on the printer. The LCD will display the page counts. The number on the left is the OPC count and the one on the
right is the machine count.

SUBJECT: LC890XL/Accessing Second Bin
Q: When using an LC890XL with Ventura 2.X (PostScript Driver) the second bin can’t be accessed, but when using an LC890 there is
no problem. Why?
A: When using Ventura 2.X with a PostScript printer the driver “PostScript” is selected. To select the second bin of a PostScript
printer “ALT #1” is chosen under the paper tray selection when choosing the print function.
When “ALT #1” is selected, the driver looks for the product name of the PostScript printer. In the case of the LC890/LC890XL, the
product name listed is “Silentwriter.” However, the LC890XL has two different product names depending on the start page
heading. The following chart crossreferences each product, start page heading and product name:
Product Heading on Start Page *Product Name
LC890 Silentwriter LC890 Silentwriter
LC890XL LC890XL LC890XL
LC890XL SilentwriterLC890XL SilentwriterXL
* The product name is easily obtained bysending the following PostScript operator program to the printer:
Times-Roman findfont 12 scalefont setfont
100 moveto
statusdict begin
product end show
show page
Once the correct product name is determined, the Ventura 2.X file “PS2.PRE” must be modified. The name “Silentwriter” appears
on line 1 of this file. When using an LC890XL that name will have to be changed to either “LC890XL” or “Silentwriter XL”,
depending on the results obtained on the output page after sending the aformentioned PostScript program to the printer.
SUBJECT: LC890XL Auto Paper Tray/Auto Tray Switch
Q: Does the NEC LC890XL Silentwriter support the Auto Paper Tray/Auto Tray Switch Feature, and if so, what must, what must be
done to the printer to allow it to perform this function?
A: The NEC LC890XL Silentwriter does support Auto Paper Tray/Auto Tray Switch Feature. In order to allow this function to work
the LC890XL must have the Auto Tray Switch feature selected feature, both trays on the LC890XL must have the same paper length
selected (this function is also selected through the front panel).
NOTE: Auto hopper select is software independent.
SUBJECT: LC890 Manual Feed Selection
Q: How do you select the manual feed slot using the PostScript operators?
A: The manual feed slot can be accessed by sending the following PostScript operator:
statusdict begin / manualfeed true store end
If the second bin is not on the printer the LC890 will see only one active bin. Hence, the PostScript operator must be used in order
to access the manual feed slot. If a command. is sent to the printer for bin 2, it is ignored and the default bin (i.e. bin 1) becomes
the active bin.

SUBJECT: LC890 Setting Wait Time Through Software
Q: How can the LC890 Silentwriter’s wait time be set through software?
A: The following 2-line PostScript operator program should be used to change the printer wait time through software:
serverdict begin 0 exitserver
statusdict begin 0 60 ‡ setdefaulttimeouts start
WHERE:
‡ = A value in seconds selecting the desired wait time
0 = Infinite
5 = 5 sec
15 = 15 sec
30 = 30 sec
Example: The following will set the wait time to 300 seconds:
statusdict begin 0 60 30 setdefaulttimeouts start
SUBJECT: Envelope Specifications for the LC800
Q: What type of envelopes can be used with my LC800 Silentwriter?

1. Envelopes should be between 16 and 20 lbs.
2. ONLY use envelopes with side seams and square flaps.
3. ONLY use envelopes with high temperature adhesive.
4. Be sure to test envelopes prior to purchase.
