Focusing/Zooming
With the Nikon F4-ser i es, F-S01 / NSOOS' , F-501/N2020" or
F-
401 / N4004', au to fo cus is po ss ible. To fo cus manually, ro-
t ate the focu s ing r ing until th e image in the viewfinder appears
sharp and crisp. The effective focal length may vary in extreme
heat or cold. To compensa te for this , the lens f ocus i ng ri ng is
designed to turn sligh tly beyond the 00 (i nfin ity ) position.
To zoom III and out , turn the loom ring s tr a ig ht ahead or back
unt il t he desired composition is f ramed in th evi ew finde r. In
manual fo cus, you ca nal so zoo m by ho ld i ng t he f oc us in gring
and moving it st ra ight forwa rd or ba ck . For p in point fo cusi ng,
fo cus w ith the len s in the 135mm zoom position , t hen c hange
to the desired focal length .

Macro Focusing
Nor mal focus ing lets you focus from infi n ity to 1.5m ( app ro x.
4 .9 tt) Macro focus i ng is poss ible w ith t he zo om r in g se t at
35 mm. For macro f ocusing down to 0.3m ( ap prox . 1It), push
t he macro button , then turn t he zoom ri ng to the correct posi-
ti on wi thin th e mac ro range (t he o rang e li ne ). Next. t urn the
foc us ing r ing for fin ef ocus adj us tment. At th e closes t macro
focus distance , the rep ro duc tio n ratio is 1:4 . In macro fo cus -
in g, alt hou gh yo u cannot use th e lens fo r au to focusing wi th th e
Nikon F4- series, F- S01 / NSOOS ,F- 501 /N2 020 or F-401 / N4 00 4,
it
ca n be used for focus assist operation.
To return to no rmal f ocusing, turn the zoo m ring clockwise until

Variable Aperture
Zooming the le ns in from 35 mm to 13 5m m decreases the max -
imum aperture approx . 2/ 3 of an fls top. For this purpose , the
lens has two aperture indexes: The green inde xis used for the
35mm focal le ngth setting ; the yellow one fo r 1 35mm se tti ng .
Click stops are provided at t he green inde x with each ape rtu re
sett ing .
For correct aperture
For cameras with TTL metering , you need no t worry about ad-
lus ti ng apertu re . However , whe nu si ng an independ en t exposure
m eter, select t he appropriate ape rtu re index according to the
focal leng th se ttin g. Fo r intermediate focal length settings, al ign
the ape rtu re ring between the two indexes. Refer to diagram 1
for the relations hip between fo c al l eng th and maximum aperture .

Foca l Length
Flash Photography Care
Beca use lens aper ture varies accordi ng to focal length se ttin g,
spec ial care is req ui r ed when performing flash photography.
For TTL automatic flash photography
When the flash-to- sub j ec t distance approaches either th e ne ar
or f ar limit of the automatic shooting ra nge , aperture may nee d
to be adjusted as you zoom in or o ut.
For non-TTL automatic or manual lIash photography
S li ght ad j ustm ent of apert ure is re qui red - us ing t he inter-
mediate setting be tw ee nt he green and yellow a perture indexes
gives you ap pro x im ately correct e xposures for all focal l eng th
sett ings . For prec i se ly cor r ec t exposures, adjust the aperture

To use depth-of-fietd scale
1. Cut out the scales a lo ng th el ines indi cated .
2. Pl ace sc ale B over sca le A so the top edge of sca le B is
a
li gn ed with the foc al length in use and the dist a nce is
al igned with the cent ral in di ca tor lin e of sca leA.
3.
Re ad the sc a le B numbers t ha t corresp ond to t he aperture
in use. For ex a mple, if the lens is pref oc used at 4m w it h the
foc al length at 35mm a nd the aperture at 1/ 11 , th e depth
of field will be f rom approx. 2m to i nf inity .
Minimum Aperture lock

minim um aperture lock l eve r to l ock the lens aper ture at f122 .

ough cle a ning must be avo ided . Wipe with a salt. clean cotton
cloth moistened with al coho l to rem ove gre ase or fillgerprints
from the lens sur f aces .
If you use ether in c le an in g the lens , as mudge s omet imes
appears on the surf ace ofa multi -coated le ns. If this ha ppe ns,
wipe it agai n with a cotton c loth moistened wi th al coho l.

an L37C filter is rec ommen ded at all times. The lens hood

Unli ke most Nikkor lenses. the AF Zoom-Nikkor 35-135mm
f/ 3.5-4 . 5Iens has no depth-of-fie ld indi cator engraved on the
lens barrel. It is possible, however. to determine depth of field
by us in g the sca le provided on this sheet.
To use depth-of-field scale
1 Cut out the scales along t he lines IIldicated .

an L 37C filter is recommended at a ll times . The lens hood

• Keep th e len s cap in p lace whenever th e len s is not in use.
• Attach both the f ro nt and rear caps when the lens is stored
separately.
• To ensure proper fit of the l ens w hen s tor ed in the le a the r
len s case, set th efens focus r ing to th einfinity (co) and the
zoom r ing to th e 35 mm setting .

If you will not use th e lens for a long time , store it in a cool.
