choiceofthemostwidelyusedlocallengthsfrom35mmwideanglethrough
50mmnormal,to70mmmoderatetelephotowitheverythinginbetween.In
addition, atthe70mmfocallengthsettinga specialmacrofocusingbutton
allowsyoutoshootmacrophotographydownto0.35m{1.2ft)camera-to-
subjectdistance.Atthisdistance,thesubjectispictured1/4Xlifesize.
Contributingtoitscompactdesign,thefrontattachmentsizewasreducedto
62mm—appreciablysmallerthanthe72mmsizeusuallyfoundonotherNikon
wideanglezoomlenses.Inaddition,ithasindependentfocusingandzooming
rings, allowingrapidchangesoffocallengthwithoutaffectingthefocusing.
Withaninnovativeopticaldesignof10elementsin9 groups,theZoom-Nikkor
35-70mmdeliverssharpimageswithvirtuallynodistortion.Moreover,Nikon
IntegratedCoating(NIC)wasappliedtotheair-to-glasssurfacesoflenselements
tominimizeghostimagesandflarewhileinsuringbettercontrastandcolor
rendition.
Actuallyfourfunctionsinone(wideangle,normal,telephotoandmacro),the
Zoom-Nikkor35-70mmf/3.5isperfectforsnapshots,travelandweddingphotog-
raphy,portraits,andmacrophotography.
Thelenscouplesfullytoboththefull-aperturemeteringsystemsandautomatic
diaphragmmechanismsofallNikonandNikkormatcameras.
MOUNTINGA
Aligntheapertureindexofthelenswiththemountingindexofthecamera;then
positionthelensinthecamera'sbayonetmount.Twistthelenscounterclockwise
untilitclicksintoplace.
Whenmountingthelensona camerawitha metercouplinglever(Altype),
makesurethatthecamera'smetercouplingleveriscorrectlypositioned;when
mountingonacamerawithoutthislever(non-AItype),"manual"maximumaper-
tureindexingisrequired.Inbothcases,refertothecamera'sinstructionmanual.

TheZoom-Nikkor35-70mmf/3.5focusesfrominfinitydownto0.7m(2.5ft).Note
thatthelongerthefocallength,thelargertheimageandtheshallowerthedepth
of field. Tofocus,rotatethefocusingringuntiltheimageontheviewfinder
screenappearssharpandcrisp.(Youdon'thavetorefocuseverytimeyou
changefocallengths.)Youcanprefocusbyusingthedistancescale,whichis
engravedinbothmetersandfeetonthefocusing ring. Makesureyoualignfor
distanceindex(blackdot)withthecamera-to-subjectdistanceasmeasuredor
estimated.
MacroFocusing
Bysettingthezoomingringto70mm(engravedinorange)andpullingbackthe
macrofocusingbutton(sothatthearrowonthebuttonisdirectlyabovethe
orangeM onthezoomingring),youcanfocuscontinuouslyfrominfinity(»)
downto0.35m(1.2ft).Atthisdistance,thereproductionratiois1/4X.The
macrofocusingrangeisindicatedbyanorangelineonthefocusing ring. With
themacrofocusingbuttonengaged,thezoomingringislockedatthe70mm
setting.
Toreturnthelenstonormalzoomoperation,turnthefocusingringuntilthe
orangelineisnolongeroppositethewhitedistanceindexandpushthemacro
focusingbuttonforward.Now,youcanrotatethezoomingringasusual.
RecommendedFocusingScreens
VariousinterchangeablefocusingscreensareavailableforNikonF3-andF2-
seriescamerastosuitanytypeoflensorpicture-takingsituation.Thosewhich
arerecommendedforusewiththisZoom-Nikk'or35-70mmf/3.5lensarelisted
below.AstothescreensusedforNikoncamerasotherthanF3-andF2-series
