General
-How to use this document
Put the colored schematics behind this manual.
Now you are able to follow these specifications with graphical layouts and it is easier for you to find the
components and measuring points.
-Component characteristics
Some components contain important data such as tuning values or security data; therefore several steps
described are only feasible if you are able to reflash/ realign the phone and/or rewrite IMEI/SIMlock in certain
cases. Please pay attention to separate notes.
-Broken balls / underfill, µBGAs
Reflow with uncontrolled hot-air fan is strictly forbidden! It is also not recommended only to reflow the old
µBGA using a µBGA rework station! µBGA must only be soldered with NMP approved µBGA rework machines
(e.g. Zevac/ OK-Metcal/ Martin) to get durable soldering joints.
After removing a µBGA check soldering points; if necessary rework oxidated solderings (broken balls)
carefully by tinplating these areas with few flux and a hot soldering iron. Before placing a new component
remove the tin and clean the PCB; e.g. with help of solder wick and flux cleaner such as “Kontakt LR”.
Use only recommended flux type and an appropriate amount of it – avoid drowning the PCB in flux as this
will result in additional faults!
Also check underfilled parts for broken underfill material below. In this case carefully evaluate possible repair
actions as the phone probably was exposed to strong mechanical stress.

-PWB handling & cleaning
To avoid damages of PWB and/or components through electrostatic discharging, handle the module in
ESD protected area. When handling PCBs outside an ESD-bag always wear ESD-bracelets, which must be
connected to earth bonding point. Damage by electrostatic discharge often leads to a module not failing
directly but in a short period of time!
For cleaning use only appropriate materials, do not use scratching or rubbing tools. Useful tools for cleaning
are flux cleaners such as “Kontakt LR” or “Electrolube FLU” in connection with ionized compressed air.
-Screw torques
To disassemble the phone, use a Torx T6 Plus screwdriver. Unscrew the 6 screws in the order shown in the
picture below. To assemble the phone, use the reverse order and torque of 17Ncm.
-Realign after repair
Characteristics of replacement parts may vary.
To prevent additional faults after repair (e.g. low standby time, losing network etc.) it is necessary to retune
phone values after repair; but never try to cover up a fault by justing the phone settings!
-Fault report in fault log (Phoenix)
It is very important to report all repaired failures in fault log after finishing the complete phone repair.
The report content should only contain the self-observed fault symptom, except “no fault found”.
In this case the report content should contain the symptom code that is given from the customer
e.g. “Does not switch on”(2101) and the fault code “no fault found”(470).
If the symptom code from the customer is not the same as the observed symptom, use always the self-
observed symptom code.

Introduction
IMPORTANT:
This document is intended for use by authorized NOKIA service centers only.
The purpose of this document is to provide some further service information for NOKIA 2100 phones.
It contains a lot of collected tips and hints to find faults and repair solutions easily.
It also will give support to inexperienced technicians.
Saving process time and improving the repair quality is the aim of this document.
It is built up based on fault symptoms (listed in "Contents"), followed by detailed description for further
analysis.
The document is to be used additionally to the service manual and other service information such as Service
Bulletins. For that reason it does not contain any circuit or schematic diagrams.
All measurements are made using following equipment:
Nokia repair SW: WINTESLA Version 6.48.001
MCU SW: 5.56
Nokia module jig: MJS - 9
Digital multimeter: Fluke 73
Oscilloscope: Fluke PM 3380A/B
Spectrum Analyzer: Advantest R3131 with an analog probe
RF-Generator / GSM Tester: Rohde & Schwarz CMU 200

Chapter 2: Phone does not switch on
Pre-check
Check mechanical appearance of battery connector (X101); especially check spring-contacts if bent,
soiled or corroded; change connector if necessary.
Check contact-pads of battery connector on PWB for dirt. If necessary clean the PWB with an
appropriate amount of alcohol. Do not use any scratching or rubbing tools!!!
First you should try is to perform a software update.
Repair instructions
Check voltage at S330, 4VDC when power switch is not pressed.
If voltage is not ok, check resistance and soldering of R118; otherwise CCONT (N100) is defective.
Swap the phone, because CCONT is underfilled and therefore not changeable.
If voltage at S330 is ok, it must decrease to 0V while pressing the power switch;
otherwise change S330.
Check sleepclock 32.768kHz square wave at J228.
If signal is not measurable, check if voltage at pads of B100 is 1.4VDC. If voltage is not ok, check
resistance of R100/102/154; otherwise CCONT N100 is probably faulty.
Swap the phone because CCONT is underfilled and therefore not changeable.
32.768kHz sleepclock at J228
Check VXO 2.7 VDC at C831 and VCON (varies between 0.3 VDC and 2.3VDC, normally 1.2VDC) at C832.
If these two voltages are ok, you must be able to measure 26MHz Clk-frequency at C830. Even
without control-voltage the oscillator must work on a frequency around 26MHz – if not, you have
to change G830.

26MHz Clk-frequency at C830
In case that CCONT N100 seems to be the responsible for not power on, check VB 3.6VDC at C129.
Check 32.768kHz square wave at J228.
Check that PWRONX decreases to 0V at S330 when pressing the power switch. Also check R118.
If these conditions are fulfilled, output voltage lines must rise to their supposed values and PURX is
released after some milliseconds by CCONT:
VBB 2.8VDC at C107
VCORE 1.8VDC at C140
VXO 2.8 VDC at C152
If one of these voltages is not measurable CCONT is faulty in all probability.
Swap the phone because CCONT is underfilled and therefore not changeable.
Also responsible for this fault could be the MAD D200. In this case check 32.768kHz square wave at
J228.
Check 13MHz Clk-frequency at C213.
Check following voltages:
VBB 2.8VDC at C201
VCORE 1.8VDC at C140
SLEEPX 2.8VDC at J226
PURX 2.8VDC at J2327
If all above mentioned works but the phone does not switch on, MAD is faulty in all probability.
Swap the phone because MAD is underfilled and therefore not changeable.

Chapter 3: Flash update is not possible
Pre-check
First of all try to make a flash update. If flash update is not possible check flashing contact-pads for
dirt. If necessary clean them with an appropriate amount of alcohol.
Repair instructions
Disable watchdog by connecting R118 to ground, and try to update again. If fault remains, check
the following voltages:
VBB 2.8VDC at C107
VCORE 1.8VDC at C140
VXO 2.8VDC at C152
SLEEPX 2.8VDC at J226
PURX 2.8VDC at J227
13MHz system clock at C213, 1Vpp sine wave
If only one of the above mentioned signals is not measurable, in all probability CCONT N100 is
faulty, but not changeable due to underfilling.
In case that all above mentioned signals are ok but fault persists; check MBUS/FBUS-lines for shorts
to ground:
check MBUS-line (J103) to GND: ~ 50k Ohm
check FBUS_RX-line (J102) to GND: ~ 220k Ohm
check FBUS_TX-line (J101) to GND: ~ 70k Ohm
To ensure function also check resistors R109, R201, R203 and R215. If these parts are ok but SW-
update still is not possible, in all probability MAD D200 is faulty, but not changeable due to
underfilling.
If “Algorithm code fail / alias ID missing” is the failure message during flashing, update your
prommerbox, and try to flash the phone again. If fault persists even though the prommerbox has
been updated, in all probability combo memory is faulty. Save phone data if possible, exchange
D210 with µBGA rework station, and try to perform SW-update once more.
In case of failure message “External RAM failure” in all probability combo memory D210 is faulty.
Exchange D210 with help of µBGA rework station and try to flash the phone again.
Remember that it is necessary to rewrite phone data and perform baseband/RF-tunings after
changing D210!
Note that you have to rewrite IMEI and SIM lock data. Furthermore you have to run all
RX/TX-tunings and energy management calibration after changing combo memory (D210).

Chapter 4: Not charging
Pre-check
In case of any fault in the charging circuit: First run energy management calibration to define the
fault!!!
Also run calibration if battery gets hot, charging stops too early.
Always check whether the fault only appears intermittent or if it is permanently impossible to
charge the battery. In case that the fault appears only from time to time, check if spring-contacts
of DC/HS-connector and battery-connector are bent, soiled or corroded. Also check contact-pads for
connectors on PWB. If necessary clean them with an appropriate amount of alcohol.
In no way use any scratching or rubbing tools!!!
Repair instructions
Nothing happens if charger is connected:
Check voltage at voltage divider R103/104, should be 0.9VDC if charger (ACP-7) is connected. If
there is no voltage, check VCHARGE-line for disconnection:
Check mechanical appearance of DC/HS-connector, especially check spring-contacts if bent, soiled
or corroded.
Check solderings and resistance of fuse F101 and coil L104 (both 0 Ohm).
Check resistance of R103/104; also check that VCHARGE-line has no short circuit to ground:
resistance normally is 50k Ohm.
Check V100 and C103/114 if not ok.
If nothing happens when charger is connected to the phone, but voltage at R103/104 is ok, it is
necessary to swap the phone because CCONT is underfilled and therefore not changeable.
Display message “Not charging”:
In case of this fault, first you should run energy management calibration to get more information
about the fault. If calibration works without failure message, check if charging does work now.
If calibration does not work, following failure messages are possible:
Battery temperature failed:
Check voltage at C161or C163, normally 0.5 VDC in service jig. If voltage is not ok, check
R120/122 for defect or broken solderings, also check C121/161/163 have no shorts to
ground. If the mentioned parts are ok but fault persists, it is necessary to swap the phone
because CCONT is underfilled and therefore not changeable

Battery size failed:
Check voltage at C160 or C162, normally 0.5 VDC in service jig. If voltage is not ok, check
R120/122 for defect or broken solderings, also check C120/160/162 have no shorts to
ground. If the mentioned parts are ok but fault persists, it is necessary to swap the phone
because CCONT is underfilled and therefore not changeable
Battery voltage failed:
This A/D-value is generated inside of CCONT (N100), so that you have to swap the phone
because CCONT is underfilled and therefore not changeable, if A/D-value is out of limit.
Charge current failed:
Probably VCHARGE-line is interrupted. Check resistance of R131 (0.22 Ohm) or change CHAPS
(N101). If this does not solve the problem, swap the phone because CCONT is responsible for
this fault.
Charge voltage failed:
In case of this message, first of all check voltage at voltage divider R103/104. Voltage here
normally is 0.9 VDC with connected charger ACP-7. If this voltage is ok, it is necessary to swap
the phone because CCONT is underfilled and therefore not changeable.
Remember to run energy management calibration if any part in the charging circuit has been
replaced!!!
