2. IntroductiontoRelayServiceandMobileCaptionsServiceTM
RelayServicesconnectpeoplewhoarehardofhearingandusespecializedtelephone
equipmenttopeoplewhousestandardtelephones,providingword‐for‐wordtextofthe
conversations.WithournewMobileCaptionsService(MCS),youwillbeabletoSpeak,Listen,
andRead!SM,allonagreatmobiledevicethatyoucantakeanywhereintheU.S.
RelayServicesweresetupinrecognitionthatallcitizensdeserveequalaccesstobasicservices
suchascommunications.Wehaveextendedthataccessibilitytomobilecommunications.
ConsumerCellular,haspartneredwithMobileCaptionsCompany,atechnologyandservice
provider,andHamiltonRelay,anestablished,professionalrelayprovider,tobringyouthis
service.ThereisnochargetoyoubeyondyournormalcellserviceforMCS,andit’savailable
24/7.

3. HowitWorks
TheMCCapplicationonyourphoneautomaticallyconnectstotheRelayServiceCenterforyour
stateoneverycallyoumake,allowingaspeciallytrainedCommunicationsAssistant(CA)to
listenandtypeonesideoftheconversation.Thetyped“captions”aresentdirectlytoyour
handsetsoyoucanreadandrespond.
Finally,CatchEveryWord!SM
ImportantNote:All911callswillbeautomaticallyrouteddirectlytoEmergencyServices.No
CommunicationsAssistantwillbeontheline,andnomobilecaptioningwillbeprovided.
4. TurningonthePhone,LockingandUnlockingtheKeyPad
Toturnonthephone,pressandholdtheredbuttonuntilitstartsup(“End/Power”keybelow).
Makesurethebatteryhassomecharge,andwerecommendchargingovernight.Ittakesabout
45secondsforthephonetocompletelyload,eventhoughyouseethehomescreen.
Ifyouarecarryingthephoneinyourpocketorpurse,youmaywanttolockthekeypad,sono
buttonsarepushedunintentionally.Todoso,pushtheleftandthenrightlock/unlockkeysin
quicksuccession(within1second).Tounlock,repeatthesameprocedure.

5. UsingYourPhoneWithCaptions
Sinceyouwillbereadingatthesametimeastalkingandlistening,werecommendthatyou
eitherusetheloudspeakerfunctiononthephone,oraheadsetsuchastheonethatcamewith
thephone,andincludesearbudsandamicrophone.Formoreinformationonheadsets,see
Section9inthisguide.
Asshownbelow,theloudspeakershouldbeactivatedduringyourcallbypressingthe“soft”or
“selection”keyintheupperrightpartofthekeyboardwhentheword“Loudsp.”isabovethe
key.Thewordabovewillchangeto“handset,”andyoucantogglebackandforthbetweenthe
twomodes.TheLoudspeakerfunctionisonlyavailableonacall.


Thevolumekeyislocatedontheupperrightsideofthephone.
6. MakingCalls
FromthehomescreenofyourE5,youdialusingthenumberkeysonthekeypadorbyselecting
anumberfromyour“Contacts”list.Also,ifyoupressthegreen,orCall/Answerbutton,you
willseealistofDialednumbers.UsethecenterNaviTMorscrollkeytogoleft,andyouwillsee
yourReceivedcalls.Onceyouhaveselectedthenumberyouwant,pressthegreenCall/Answer
keytoinitiatethecall.YourcallwillautomaticallybeconnectedtotheRelayCenter.

WhentheRelayCommunicationsAssistant(CA)comesonthelineheorshewillsendtheirID,
suchasMCC1234(F)meaningtheCAisafemaleandhasnumber1234.TheCAwillinformyou
bycaptionsifthelineisbusyorringing,orifvoicemailpicksup.Notethatitusuallytakesabout
20secondsfortheparty’sphonetoring.Duringthattime,theMCCapplicationiscallingthe
RelayCenter,theCAiscomingontheline,andtheoutgoingcallismade.TheCAwillalsoenter
anyfurtherdigitsyouneed,suchasforvoicemailoptions.

TheRelayCommunicationsAssistant(CA)willhaveminimalinvolvementinyourcall.Ifyousee
thephrase“toofast,”itmeanstheCAishavingtroubletyingeverythingtheotherpartysays.
Youmaywanttoaskyourpartytoslowdownorrepeat.Youareincontrolofyourcall.

ToEndthecall,pleasepresstheredEnd/Powerkeyontherightabovethekeypad.

Ifyouareinaremotearea,orthenetworkisverybusy,itispossiblethatautocallsetupwill
notbeavailable.Ifthishappens,youwillgetamessageinredtotellyourparty’snumbertothe
CA.Onceyoudoso,theCAwillmakethecallforyou.

Youmayalsodial“0”toreachaCAanytime,thentelltheCAthenumberyouwishtocall.
7. ReceivingCalls
ForsomeonetocallyouusingRelay,theymustdialyourstates’800Relaynumberor711
andgiveyourcellnumbertotheoperator1.

1711canbeusedbyanyoneinyourstateorthestatesinAppendix1.Ifyourpartylivesoutsidethese
states,pleaseaskthemtousethetollfreenumberforyourstateinAppendix1.Thisnumberwillwork
fromanywhereintheU.S.

Whenacalliscomingin,thephonewillring,vibrateandflash.Answerbypushingthegreen
Call/AnswerkeyandallowingafewsecondsfortheCAtosetupandsendyoucaptions..When
youreceivetheCA’sgreeting,youknowyouareconnected.
SometimespeoplewillcalldirectlywithoutgoingthroughRelay.Onceyoupickup,youcanask
themtocallyour800numberor711first,orletthecallgotovoicemailandretrievethe
voicemaillaterandcallthemback.Ifnocaptionshavecomeafterabout5seconds,itis
probablynotarelaycall.

8. MobileCaptionsServiceSMApplicationandYourNokiaE5Phone
YourNokiaphoneispreloadedwiththeMobileCaptionsServiceapplication:

TheMCSlogoissetintheupperlefthandcornerofthehomescreen,andfirstonthelistof
itemswhenyouselecttheMenubutton.TheHome/Menukeyisthebuttonwiththelittle
houseonitjustabovethegreenbutton.Pushitoncefromwithinanyapplicationandittakes
youtothehomescreen.Pushitfromthehomescreen,andittakesyoutotheMenu.
YoudonotneedtostarttheMCCapplicationunlessyouhavepreviouslyturneditoff.All
outgoingcallsareRelaycalls.ForincomingcallstobeRelaycallstheymustfirstbedirectedto
theRelayServiceCenter.SeeSection7,above.
Navigationonthephoneisaccomplishedbythecenter,silver,Navigation,or“NaviTM”/Scroll
keyandthe“Selection”keysontheupperrightandleftofthekeypad.Youcanalsousethe

redEnd/Powerbuttonto“getback”quicklyfromanymenuitemtothehomescreenaswellas
toendacallandturnthepoweroffandon.
9. UsingaHeadset,Tcoil,BluetoothorLoudspeaker(Speakerphone)
BecausetheMCCapplicationisdesignedtoletyouSpeak,Listen,andRead!SMatthesametime,
thereareseveralmethodstoassistyouwithusingthephonewhilelookingatthescreen.The
useoftheLoudspeakeriscoveredinSection5,above.
UsingtheLoudspeaker
ThequickestwaytousetheMSCapplicationiswiththephone’sloudspeaker,RefertoSection5
fordetails.
UsingHeadsetsandEarbuds
AhandsfreeheadsetisincludedwiththeE5phone.Ifyouarenotwearinghearingaids,you
caneasilyusethethisheadset.TheheadsetplugsdirectlyintotheportonthetopoftheNokia
E5.ThephonehasaNokia3.5mmA/Vconnector.
UsingT‐CoilHearingAids
TheNokiaE5isratedM3/T3forTcoilhearingaidmode.Ifyouareahearingaidwearerwitha
T‐switchonyourhearingaid,youcanturnontheT‐coilonthephone,andthenonyourhearing
aids.TosetyourE5inT‐coilmode,goto:
MainMenu>ControlPanel>Settings>General>Personalization>Tones>Tcoilhearingaidmode
andselect“On”.Whenitisactivatedtherewillbealittleiconwiththeearonthebottomofthe
screen.Onceyouaresetup,youcanholdthereceivernearyourhearingaid,andthesoundwill
alsobeamplifiedtoassistyouinhearingasyouread.
OnedevicemadeforusewithT‐coilhearingaidsistheNokiaWirelessLoopsetLPS‐which
connectstoyourT‐coil‐equippedhearingaidandoffersexcellentaudioquality.

YourE5phoneisBluetoothcompatible.Ifyouarenotwearinghearingaidsagoodwaytouse

10. ReceivingCaptions
Onceyouroutgoingorincomingrelaycallissetup,youwillreceivecaptionsautomatically.
WhentheCommunicationsAssistant(CA)comesonline,theywillsendtheirIDtothephone:
MCCCA1234M,meaningthisisanMCCcallandtheyareCA1234,male.TheCAcanhearyou
duringthecall,andyoumayaskforhelp,ifneeded.Theyaretheretomakethecallasuccess.
NatureofCaptions
TypingforRelayisgenerallywithlittlepunctuationorcapitalization.Thismakesitfaster,but
maytakesomegettingusedto.Inaddition,theCAmayuseabbreviations.Mostofthe
abbreviationsareintuitive,suchasUforyou.Wehaveprovidedalistofabbreviationsin
Appendix2.

Thespeedofthecaptionsdependsonseveralfactors,includinghowfastyourpartyis
speaking,howfasttheCAistyping,andtheconditionofthenetwork.NotethattheCA’sare
highlytrainedprofessionals,andtheymayaskyoutoslowyourpartydowniftheycannotkeep
up.
NetworkSpeeds
Thenetworkhastwospeeds,3Gand2G.MobileCaptionsServicehasbeenoptimizedfor3G
service,butitwillworkwithin2Gareasaswell.OntheupperleftcorneroftheE5screenyou
willseea“3G”whichindicatesyouareinoptimizedcoveragearea.Ifyouareoutsidea3Garea
(orinalocalareathatmayhavepoorreceptionsuchasinabigbuilding),thecaptionsmaybe
deliveredmoreslowly.Youmayfindthatslowingdowntheconversationorspellingoutunique
wordswillhelp.Mostofall,onceyouandyourcallingpartygetsusedtothepace,the
conversationwillfloweasily.

11. ScrollingandTextSizing:UseoftheMiddle“NaviTM”Key
Dependingonyourneeds,youmaywanttomakethetextlarger(easiertosee)orsmaller
(morewordsonthescreen).Youmayalsowanttolookbackintheconversationtochecka
numberorseeifsomeonereallysaidthat!Allthiscanbeaccomplishedusingthemiddle,or
Navikeyasshownbelow:

Adjustingthetextsize.DuringaMCScall,youcanmakethetextsmallerorlargerby
pressingtheouterbuttonright(bigger)orleft(smaller).

Scrolling.WhenonanMCScall,presstheouterbuttonuptoscrollyoubackinthe
conversation.Thisisusefulifyouwanttogetanumberorrecallwhatwassaid.Toget
back,youcanpushtheouterbuttondown,orwaitafewsecondsandyouwillbetaken
backtowheretheconversationiscomingin.
12. SavingandRetrievingSessions
Sessionscanbesavedandretrievedforreading,editingandcopyingtootherapplicationssuch
asSMSoremail.Attheendofeachsessionyouwillbeaskedwhetheryouwanttosavethecall.
SelectYestosave,orNotodelete.
Toretrievesavedsessions,whileinMCC,gotoOptions>Recentcalls.Therewillbealistofthe
sessionsyouhavesavedbydateandtime.Onceacallishighlighted,theOptionsare,View,
SendasSMS,DeleteorDeletePrevious.OnceyouViewasession,youwillhaveotheroptions,
suchasEdit,orDelete.Ifyouwishtoseesessionsfurtherback,youcanscrolltoseethem.

13. TurningCaptionsOnandOff
ToturntheCaptionsOffgototheMCCapplicationselectedOption>TurnCaptionsOff>Yesto

theNaviKey.
ThephonewillautomaticallystarttheMCCapplication,turningcaptionson,everytimeyou
poweronyourphone.
14. Voicemail
Yourvoicemailboxhasbeenpre‐setupwithastandardgreetingandisreadytoreceive
messages.
ToretrieveyourVoiceMessageswithcaptions,simplyDial(press)1andholdforasecondor
two.YouwillbeautomaticallyconnectedtoaCA.Onceconnected,telltheCAyouwantto
retrieveyourmessagesandgivethemyourpassword.
Thedefaultpasswordis1234.
YoucancreateacustommessageforthevoicemailboxtoincludetheRelayServicephone
numberanddirectpeopletocallthatnumberinthefuture.

15. CallForwardingFromYourOtherNumbers
Ifyouwishtoforwardyourcallsfromanothernumber,youcanforwardthemdirectlytothe
yourstate’stoll‐freeRelayNumberinAppendix1.ThenyourcallerswillreachRelayandbe
askedwhatnumbertheywanttoreach.YoucanalsoforwardthemdirectlytotheNokiaE5
phonenumber.Then,unlesscallerIDisblocked,youcanknowwhoiscallingandchooseto:
1. Letthecallgotovoicemail,pickingituplater(asacaptionedRelayCall)

16. CallWaiting
IfyouareonaMCCRelaycall,andyougetanothercall,youwillseethenoticeonthescreen
thatanothercalliscomingin.Ifyouwanttocontinuethefirstcall,youhavetwooptions.
1. Letthesecondcallgotovoicemail.Thenlater,whenyouretrieveyourvoicemailyou
canbesureyouaregettingthecaptionsservice.
2. Takethesecondcallasfollows:
a. HitandholdtheGREENbuttonforabout½second.
b. Thiswillconnectyouwiththesecondcaller.IfthecallcalledthroughRelayusing
711orthe800numberforyourstate,youcanreceivecaptionsofthatcall.They
willcometoyourscreenfollowingthepreviouscaptionedcall.Ifnot,youcan
tellthemtouseRelay.
c. Whenyouaredonespeakingwiththesecondperson,youcangobacktothe
firstcaller:hittheREDbuttonquickly.Ifyouholditdown,bothcallswillbe
disconnected.Ifyouhititquickly,justthesecondcallerwillbedisconnected.
d. Youcannotgobacktothesecondcalleronceyougavelefthimorher.Butyou
canseethenumberinthecalllog.
e. IfthesecondincomingcallhascallerIDturnedoff,youwillnotgetanoticeon
thescreen.Youwillgetasoftbeepontheline,butitisdifficulttohear.Soit
maybebettertoletthatcallgotovoicemail.
f. Notethatyoushouldtellthefirstpersonyouareputtingthemonhold.Itis
possiblethatbothstreamsofcaptionswillcomeintothephoneiftheperson
keepstalkingandtheCAkeepstyping!


19. ConservingBatteryLife
Therearesomesimplethingsthatwillhelpyouconservebatterylifeandnotrunout.
1. Besidescaptions,beawarethatusingtheinternet,GPSandWiFialluseextrapower.
2. Makeahabitofchargingyourphoneovernight.Thatwayyouwillalwaysstartwith
afullcharge.
3. Getatravelchargertoplugintoyourcar’slighterorchargingportifyouaregoing
onatrip,especiallyifyouuseGPS,theInternetand/orBluetooth.
4. Plugthephoneinwhenyoucan,especiallyifyouareusingitheavily.
5. IfyouuseWiFi,whenyouaredone,disconnectitinConnectionmanager(see17.4)
6. Ifyouarerunninglowonbattery,youcanturnoffthephone,ordisconnectall
