Replacing the fan tray in an 8003 Chassis
The 8003 Chassis has a single fan tray that is installed on the right side of the chassis (Figure 1). The
fan tray contains three high-capacity, multiple-speed fans and a control or monitor circuit board.

If one of the fans in the fan tray fails, the LED lights amber. If a fan fails, replace the fan tray as
quickly as possible to maintain high-availability operations. Failure to replace the fan tray can cause
the chassis to overheat.
You can replace the fan tray in the 8003 Chassis with the power on or off.

To replace the fan tray:
1Loosen the two retaining screws that fasten the fan tray to the chassis (Figure 2).

2Wait 10 seconds for the fans to stop turning, and then pull the fan tray out of the chassis
(Figure 2).
3Slide the new fan tray into the chassis until the connectors at the rear of the fan tray engage
(Figure 3).
If the chassis is powered on, the fans start turning when the fan tray connectors are fully
engaged.

Caution: Grasp the fan tray at the middle of the front panel. Be careful to keep your
fingers out of the fan blades.

4Tighten the captive screws to fasten the fan tray to the chassis (Figure 3).
5With the chassis power on, verify that the green status LED is lit.
Replacing a fan tray in an 8006 or 8010 Chassis
Figure 4 illustrates the fan tray used in the 8006 Chassis. This fan tray contains six high-capacity
fans and a control or monitor circuit board. The 8006 Chassis has a single fan tray that is installed on
the right side of the chassis.

Figure 5 illustrates the fan tray used in the 8010 Chassis. This fan tray contains eight high-capacity
fans and a control or monitor circuit board. The 8010 Chassis has two fan trays installed on the right
side of the chassis.

Table 1 describes the LED on the fan trays.

If one of the fans in a fan tray fails, the Fan 1 or Fan 2 LED on the switch fabric module lights amber.
If a fan fails, replace the fan tray as quickly as possible to maintain high-availability operations.
Failure to replace the fan tray can cause the chassis to overheat.
You can replace a fan tray in the 8006 Chassis or in the 8010 Chassis with the power on or off.
State Meaning
Off A fan has failed or the control or monitor circuit
is malfunctioning.
On Fan tray and circuitry are operating normally.

To replace a fan tray:

2Wait 10 seconds for the fans to stop turning, then pull the fan tray out of the chassis (Figure 6).
3Slide the new fan tray into the chassis until the connectors at the rear of the fan tray engage
(Figure 7).
If the chassis is powered on, the fans start turning when the fan tray connectors are fully
engaged.

Replacing a fan tray in a 8010co Chassis
The 8010co Chassis has two fan trays that are installed at the top of the chassis (Figure 8). Each fan
tray contains two high-capacity, multiple-speed fans and a control or monitor circuit board.

If one of the fans in a fan tray fails, the Fail LED lights red. If a fan fails, replace the fan tray as
quickly as possible to maintain high-availability operations. Failure to replace the fan tray can cause
the chassis to overheat.

Table 2 describes the fan tray LEDs on the 8010co Chassis.
You can replace a fan tray in the 8010co Chassis with the power on or off.
To replace a fan tray:
1Attach the antistatic wrist strap that was shipped with the chassis.
aLocate the antistatic wrist strap in the shipping container.
bVerify that the cable is attached to the wrist strap.
cPlace the strap around your wrist.
dAdjust the strap to ensure that the metal buckle inside the strap touches your skin.
eInsert the plug into the ground port on the front of the chassis (Figure 9).

Pass Green Steady The fan tray is functioning normally.
Off The fan tray is not receiving power.
Caution: Electrostatic discharge can damage hardware. Follow the procedure in this
section to protect your equipment from damage.

2Turn the fan tray lock to the unlocked position (Figure 10).

3Press up on the inside of the handle to disengage it from the chassis back panel, then pull the fan
tray part way out of the chassis.
4Wait 10 seconds for the fans to stop turning, then pull the fan tray out of the chassis (Figure 11).

6Turn the fan tray lock to the locked position (see Figure 10 on page 11).
