NORTHERN DIVER FINS MANUAL
Thank you for purchasing Northern Diver Fins. To help ensure your future diving
safety, do not use this product before reading this manual. It is important to
fully understand its proper handling for safe usage. This manual is supplied as a
guideline for equipment use and care. It is not a substitute for proper qualified
instruction and is not supplied as such.
Type of fin
Your fins will either have a full foot pocket or an open heel. Fins with full foot
pockets, for example our Tropical Pool Fins, are designed for light diving
applications such as wetsuit diving in warm conditions. Full foot pocket fins are
not normally worn with wetsuit or drysuit boots. They should fit comfortably – not
too tight or too loose.
Open heel fins are more commonly used than full foot pocket fins. These fins
are used across a wide range of diving conditions and should be worn with in-
water footwear such as wetsuit or drysuit boots. Due to the bulkiness of in-water
footwear like drysuit boots, the foot pocket may seem bigger than that of a full
foot pocket fin. Your foot is secured in this type of fin by means of a strap running
across the open heel.
Open heel fin straps
Our open heel fins are supplied with rubber straps as standard. These connect
to the fin’s anchor points and can be released by means of their quick release
buckles. The straps can be tightened by pulling on the ends of the strap and
loosened by pressing the strap’s buttons near both anchor points. You may need
to pull on the strap slightly when loosening.
You can opt for our metal Spring Fin Straps for an extra charge. These straps
aren’t adjustable, as the tension from the metal spring secures your foot in place,
but they are available in different sizes.

Our Spring Fin Straps are available with either plastic or metal buckles. Fins with
‘soft’ rubber anchor points, such as our Jet Fins, can only be used with the plastic
buckle variant. This is because the metal buckles can damage this type of anchor
point. Get in touch with us if you are unsure if your fins can be used with our
metal Spring Fin Straps.

Note: Our Jet Fins are available with rubber fin straps with clamp buckles.
To tighten the strap, the rubber strap folds back on itself through the buckle
(and vice versa for loosening), and the strap is then pulled towards the fin’s
foot pocket to clamp the strap in place. Pulling the other way releases the
buckle.
The plastic variant of the Spring Fin Straps features quick release buckles like the
ones found on our rubber fin straps. The metal Spring Fin Straps do not have this
feature.
Before diving
Remember that it’s your responsibility to use and store your diving equipment
responsibly.
Inspect your fins (and straps if used) thoroughly before putting them on, checking
for any signs of damage. If damage is suspected, do not use your fins.
When putting your fins on and taking them off, we recommend that you either:
• Sit down
• Stand and hold your diving buddy’s shoulder for support
Full foot pocket fins
You may find it easiest to fold down the down the back of the foot pocket when
inserting your foot, folding it back up to its original position when your foot is fully
inserted. Alternatively, grip the back of the foot pocket and insert your foot, using
your other hand to steady the fin if you are sat down.
Open heel fins
Ensure the strap is moved downwards out of the way of the foot pocket and that
it has been loosened if it is a rubber strap. Insert your foot into the fin, using your
hands to steady the fin if you are sat down. Once your foot is inserted, bring the
strap back to its operational position.
If you are using rubber straps, pull each end of the strap until you have a snug but
comfortable fit.
If you are using Spring Fin Straps, the strap should automatically secure your foot.
If you are using rubber straps with clamps, tighten the strap by folding it back on
itself through each buckle and pulling the ends of the strap. Secure each end of
the strap by pulling it towards the foot pocket.

After diving
Remove your fins as soon as possible after you leave the water, ensuring it is safe
to do so. Remember – sit down or stand, using your diving buddy’s shoulder for
support if standing.
Note: Remove your fins when walking through shallow water, i.e. if you are
walking to shore.
Full foot pocket fins
Again, you can fold down the rear of the foot pocket to assist with this, folding
it back up to its original position once done, or you can grip the rear of the foot
pocket, steadying the fin with your other hand if you’re sat down.
Open heel fins
If you have plastic Spring Fin Straps, you can press the quick release buckle to
release your foot from your fin.
If you have metal Spring Fin Straps, pull the strap out and downwards to release
your foot.
If you are using rubber straps with clamps, pull each end of the strap away from
the foot pocket to release the strap, and thread the strap back through the buckle
to loosen.
Rinse your fins with fresh clean water and dry with a towel or similar.
Store your fins in a cool, dry place.
Warning: Do not leave your fins in direct sunlight.
