Battery Discharge Chart

•Built in thermal protection shuts off battery charging when internal
temperature reaches 40 ºC (105 ºF).
•What impacts device temperature?
•Ambient temperature:
•Normal device operations can some additional heat to the device.
•Voltage Draw:
•Extra activities, such as, searching for cell signal in poor cellular coverage
area can generate additional heat.
•Environmental factors:
•If the device is exposed to high temperatures, it is possible the device will
experience an interrupted charge cycle.
•Recommendations
•Keep device away from direct sunlight (e.g. car dashboard, other
electronics)
•Charge in a cool place, near AC or fan.
Battery Thermal Protection

•When the device is in the charging cradle and reaches full charge, the
power management system allows the battery to discharge to a certain
level (4v ~ 75%) before it resumes charging until the battery reaches full
charge again. This is done to preserve a long battery life.
•When the user pulls the device from the charger, the battery level will
depend on the state of the battery in this top-off/discharge cycle. This
is why the battery level could be lower than 100%, when pulled off the
charger, after a full 4 hour charge cycle.
–This has low impact on the 36 hour use time but could cause battery
warnings to go off sooner than expected.
•If device goes below the expected discharge, new charge management
logic will then reboot the device to restore proper charging operation.
Charge Management

Fall Detection

•Libris is designed to sense when the user has fallen and
automatically contact the response team.
•Fall data is gathered from an array of sensors located on the
device, including accelerometers, a magnetometer and
gyroscope.
•Over 190 different parameters, such as orientation change,
impact intensity and impact speed.
•Immediately after the sensors notice atypical activity:
•Gathers data for up 10 seconds.
•Sends data over cellular network to Libris classifier (cloud based) for
analysis.
•If classifier determines a fall occurred, call placed to response team.
•Process takes 35-40 seconds.
Fall Detection - How Does it Work?

•Why does the device make a call when I have not fallen?
•Activities of daily living that exhibit movement patterns similar to a fall
•Example, quickly lying down onto a bed or getting out of car
•Feature is calibrated to the motion activity of an older population
•Accidental button push
•Why does the device not go off when it’s dropped or thrown on the
floor?
•Parameters captured from a dropped or thrown device do not resemble
those of a person who has fallen
•How should the user wear the device for best results?
•The Libris can be worn at the waist using the belt clip or around the neck
using the lanyard
•If worn around their neck, ensure that Libris remains close to the chest, worn
under clothing, for best results
Fall Detection - FAQs

•If a fall is detected while the device is in a poor coverage area and a
voice call cannot be made:
–Device will play a message for the user announcing why the call could not be
made, and that it will continue to retry the call
–The device will retry in increments of 30 seconds up to 3 minutes, and then every
3 minutes thereafter until cancelled, placed in charger, or the device runs out of
battery
