MAINTENANCE OVERVIEW
In clean, closed loop ow applications, turbine ow meters should
not require frequent maintenance. A suggested interval for
inspection and/or replacement of components is dependent upon
ow velocity, run time, and water quality. With 24-hour service,
visual inspection of the meter after ve years has proven to be a
conservative approach to preventative maintenance.
In applications which contain more dirt or debris, the ow meter
should be inspected at regular intervals to determine the amount
and type of dirt buildup on the turbine assembly. Based on
the results of these inspections, a regular cleaning interval and
procedure can be developed.

F-1100 AND F-1200 INSERTION STYLE METERS
IMPORTANT NOTE
Disassembly of the turbine is not recommended. If the turbine assembly cannot be cleaned without disassembly,
please contact ONICON to obtain a Return Authorization for cleaning and maintenance service.
For light debris and low scale build up:
1. Carefully remove the ow meter from the pipe, slide the hot tap adapter up to allow room for cleaning.
2. Use the soft bristle brush, soap and water to gently remove dirt and debris from the turbine assembly.
3. Use the tweezers to remove any debris from the shaft(s) and bearings.
4. Use a cloth or paper towel with cleaner to clean the meter stem and hot tap adapter. Slide the hot tap adapter up and
down on the meter stem so you can clean the stem under it.
IMPORTANT NOTE
Blow on the turbines to ensure they spin freely.
• Soft bristle brush
• Fine point tweezers
• Non-gritty, degreasing soap (such as dish washing liquid)
• White vinegar (to dissolve calcium buildup)
• Lime-A-Way or CLR: For removal of water deposits.
• Hydrochloric Acid (HCL) or Muriatic Acid*: Used to remove extremely heavy mineral deposits. Use a mixture of 1 part
acid to 9 parts water. Do not use a stronger acid mix. Soak the aected area in the solution for 1- 5 minutes depending
on how dirty the meter is. Then rinse thoroughly with clean water.
*Muriatic acid should be used as a last resort due to the hazards involved in handling it.
PROCEDURE
RECOMMENDED TOOLS
WARNING - READ CAREFULLY BEFORE HANDLING ACID!
• Muriatic acid can cause severe irritation or burns to the skin and eyes. Use caution and PPE when handling acid.
• When handling acid, wear face and eye protection and protective gloves which are rated for exposure to acid.
• NEVER add water into acid! Serious injury could result. Always add the acid into the water.
• Acid vapor may irritate the respiratory tract. Avoid breathing acid vapor and use only in a well ventilated area.
• NEVER mix acid with any other chemicals.
• Neutralize spilled acid using Sodium Bicarbonate.
• Muriatic acid is classied as a hazardous waste and should be disposed of according to the manufacturer’s
recommendations.
• Silicon grease
IMPORTANT NOTE
NEVER use any petroleum based lubricants (such as WD-40, machine oil, etc.) on the ow meter. Petroleum based
lubricants will damage the ow meter’s o-ring seals.

F-1134 AND F-1101 INLINE STYLE METERS
The F-1134 and F-1101 meters are in-line style, access to the turbine assembly is not possible without removing the
turbine assembly from the meter brass body. Cleaning should be done without removing the turbine assembly from the
meter body. If the turbine assembly needs to be removed, please contact ONICON for assistance.
1. Use a ashlight to visually inspect the turbine for debris, dirt or damage.
2. Use tweezers to remove any foreign material stuck or wrapped in the turbine.
3. Flush water through the ow meter brass body to wash out smaller debris and dirt.
CAUTION
Use care not to get water in or on the electronics housing of the meter.
4. To remove additional dirt, place the ow meter body in a shallow pan and ll to the top of the body opening with
cleaner. Let the meter soak for anywhere between 5 minutes to a few hours.
• If using household cleaners, soak between ve minutes to a few hours, depending on scale build up.
• If using Muriatic Acid and water solution, soak 1 - 5 minutes maximum.
• After soaking and rinsing, put some of the cleaning solution or soap on a small brush and lightly brush around the
For hard to remove mineral deposits and excessive dirt:
1. Place enough cleaning solution into a container to cover the entire turbine assembly.
2. Place the assembly into the solution and let soak.
• If using household cleaners, soak between ve minutes to a few hours, depending on scale build up.
• If using Muriatic Acid and water solution, soak 1 - 5 minutes maximum.
• After soaking and rinsing, put some of the cleaning solution or soap on a small brush and lightly brush around the
ends of the turbines, exposed bearings & shaft, and the turbine support brackets.
• After cleaning the ow meter, rinse thoroughly to remove all cleaner and dirt from the meter stem and turbine
assembly. Use a wire brush to clean pipe dope or thread tape out of the threads on the hot tap adapter and ush
with water to rinse.
CAUTION
Use caution not to get water in or on the electronics housing of the meter.
3. With the turbines exposed, blow the excess water o of the turbine assembly. Hold the ow
meter so the turbines are as a ship’s propeller would be and blow gently on the turbines to
see if they turn freely. If not, clean again. If they spin freely, the turbine assembly has been
successfully cleaned.
4. Apply a small amount of silicone grease to the meter stem and slide the hot tap adapter up
and down to lubricate the o-ring seal in the hot tap adapter and reinstall the ow meter in

• Use a wire brush to clean pipe dope or thread tape out of the body threads and ush with water to rinse.
• Blow any excess water out of the meter body and then blow air through the meter body to see if the turbine spins freely.
If not, clean again. If they spin freely, the turbine assembly has been successfully cleaned.

The meter will not generate a ow signal unless the turbine is in water.
