SECTION I. Installing light fixture
duringnewpoolconstruction
A. Preparatorystepswhichmustbecompleted
by the electrician before light fixture is
installed;seeFigure1.
1. Verify that the pool meets the
requirementsofthe currentNational
ElectricalCodeandalllocalcodesand
ordinances. A licensed or certified
electrician must install the electrical
system to meet or exceed those
requirements before the underwater
light is installed. Some of the
requirementsoftheNationalElectricalCodewhichthepool’selectricalsystemmustmeetarelistedbelow.
a. Thelighting circuitmust haveaGroundFaultCircuitInterrupter(GFCI), andanappropriatelyratedcircuit
breaker.
b. TheJunctionBox(or,for12voltmodels,thelowvoltagetransformer)mustbelocatedatleast8inchesabove
waterlevel,4 inchesaboveground level,andat least48inchesfrom theedgeof thepool;seeFigure 1.
c. Thelightfixtureandallmetalitemswithin5feetofthepoolmustbeproperlyelectricallybonded.
d. Thewet nichemustbe properlyinstalledso thepilotscrew holeisat the12o’clockpositionandthatthetop
edgeoftheunderwaterlight’slensisatleast18inchesbelowthesurfaceofthewaterinthepool;seeFigure1.
NOTE
The required orientation of all Pentair lights is with the pilot screw at the 12 o’clock position. This is guaranteed by proper niche installation.
e. ThewetnichemustbeproperlyelectricallybondedandgroundedviatheNo.8AWGgroundconnectorlocated
at the rear of the niche; see Figure 1.
NOTE
The pool or spa electrical system can be verified with a Pool and Spa Electrical Qualification Test Kit. The test kit is available from Pentair
Water Pool and Spa. The electrical system inspection using this kit must be performed by trained and certified personnel.
2. Tobecertainthatthepool’selectricalsystemmeetsallapplicablerequirements,theelectricianshouldalsoconsult
thelocalbuildingdepartment.
3. UseonlyPentairWaterPoolandSpawetnichestoinsureproperbondingandgroundingconnections.
B. Stepsto performaftertheelectricalsystemrequirementsaremet.
1. FeedcordthroughconduittoJunctionBox,leavingatleast4feetofcordatthelightfixturetocoilaroundthelight;
seeFigure 1.This4feetof cordaroundthelightallows thelighttobeserviced afterthepoolisfilledwithwater.
2. Cutthe cordatthe JunctionBox,leaving atleast6 inchesofcordtomakeconnections.
3. Strip6inchesoftheouter cordjacket toexpose thethreeinsulatedwires.Becarefulnottodamagetheinsulation
onthethreeinnerwires.
4. Connectallthreewirestothecorrespondingcircuitwiresinthe JunctionBox(blackwiretopower,whitewireto
common,and greenwiretoground)andsecurethe JunctionBoxcoverinplace.
WARNING
Neveroperatethisunderwaterlightformorethan10secondsunlessitistotallysubmergedinwater.Withouttotalsubmersion,
the light assembly will get extremely hot, which may result in serious burns or in breakage of the lamp or lens. This may result
in serious injury to pool users, installers, or bystanders, or in damage to property.
5. Replacethe lightassemblyintonicheand tightenspecialpilotscrew.

6. Fillthepooluntiltheunderwaterlightiscompletelysubmergedinwaterbeforeoperatingthelightformorethan
10seconds.Turnon mainswitch orcircuitbreaker,aswellastheswitchwhichoperatesthe underwaterlight
itself,to checkforproperoperation.
SECTIONII. Replacing light fixture in existing pool

Always disconnect the power to the pool light at the circuit breaker before servicing the light. Failure to do
so could result in death or serious injury to serviceman, pool users or others due to electrical shock.
A. Beforereplacingthelightfixture.
1. VerifythatthepoolmeetstherequirementsofthecurrentNationalElectricalCodeandalllocalcodesand
ordinances.Alicensedorcertifiedelectricianmustinstalltheelectricalsystemtomeetorexceedthose
requirementsbeforetheunderwaterlightisinstalled.SomeoftherequirementsoftheNationalElectricalCode
whichthepool’selectricalsystemmustmeetareasfollows:
a. ThelightingcircuithasaGroundFaultCircuitInterrupter(GFCI),andhasanappropriatelyratedcircuit
breaker.
b. TheJunction Box(or,for12volt models,thelowvoltagetransformer)islocated atleast8inchesabove
waterleveland atleast4inches abovegroundleveland atleast48inches fromtheedgeof thepool;see
Figure1.
c. Thelightfixtureandallmetalitemswithin5feetofthepoolareproperlyelectricallybonded.
d. Thewet nicheisproperlyinstalledsothatthe topedgeoftheunderwater light’slensisatleast 18inches
belowthesurface ofthewaterin the pool;seeFigure1.
e. Thewet nicheisproperlyelectricallybondedandgrounded viatheNo.8AWGgroundconnector located
at the rear of the niche; see Figure 1.
NOTE:

B. Replacinglightfixtureafterelectricalsystemrequirementsaremet.
WARNING
Failure to bring the pool’s electrical system up to code requirements before installing the underwater light will create an
electrical hazard which could result in death or serious injury to pool users, installers, or others due to electrical shock,
and may also cause damage to property.
1. Turnoffmainelectricalswitchorcircuitbreaker,aswellastheswitchwhichoperatestheunderwaterlight.

2. Toremovelightassembly,removethespecialpilotscrewattopoffacering,removelightassemblyfromniche,
andplace assemblyondeck.
WARNING
Be sure to keep the special pilot screw from this underwater light. This screw mounts and electrically grounds the
housing securely to the mounting ring and wet niche. Failure to use the screw provided could create an electrical hazard
which could result in death or serious injury to pool users, installers or others due to electrical shock.
3. RemoveJunctionBoxcover,disconnectthelightfixturewires,andpullthecordthroughtheconduit.
4. FeedthenewlightfixturecordthroughtheconduitfromthenichetotheJunctionBox.
NOTE:
Depending on the length of the conduit, special tools may be required to pull the cord through the conduit.
5. Leaveatleast 4feetof cordtocoilaround thelightfixture; seeFigure1.This 4feetof cordcoiledaroundthe
lightallowsthelighttobeservicedafterthepoolisfilledwithwater.
6. Cutthe cordatthe JunctionBox,leaving atleast6 inchesofcordtomakeconnections.
7. Strip6inches of the outercordjacketfrom the cordtoexposethethree insulated wires.Becarefulnot to
damagetheinsulationonthethreeinnerwires.
8. Connectallthreewirestothecorrespondingcircuitwiresin theJunction Box(black wireto power,white wire
tocommon, andgreenwiretoground)andsecurethe JunctionBoxcoverinplace.
WARNING
Never operate this underwater light for more than 10 seconds unless it is totally submerged in water. Without total
submersion, the light assembly will get extremely hot, which may result in serious burns or in breakage of the lamp or
lens. This may result in serious injury to pool users, installers, or bystanders, or in damage to property.
9. Replacelightassemblyintonicheandtightenspecialpilotscrew.
WARNING

housing securely to the mounting ring and wet niche. Failure to use the screw provided could create an electrical hazard
which could result in death or serious injury to pool users, installers or others due to electrical shock.
10. Fillthepooluntiltheunderwaterlightiscompletelysubmergedinwaterbeforeoperatingthelightformorethan
10seconds.Turnon mainswitchorcircuitbreaker,andtheswitchthatoperatestheunderwaterlight itself,to
checkfor properoperation.
SECTIONIII. Replacing a lamponly
DANGER
Always disconnect power to the pool light at the circuit breaker before servicing the light. Failure to do so could
result in death or serious injury to installer, serviceman, pool users or others due to electrical shock.
1. Turnoffmainelectricalswitchorcircuit
breaker,as wellasthe switchwhichoperates
theunderwaterlightitself.
2. Youwillneedthefollowingitems.
a. A new lens gasket (p/n 79101600).
b. A lamp, for proper type and wattage;
see Table 1.

WARNING
Replace lamp with a similar type and wattage. Failure to replace lamp with the same type of lamp will damage the light
assembly and may cause an electrical hazard resulting in death or serious injury to pool users, installers, or others due
to electrical shock, and may also cause damage to property.
WARNING
Always install a new lens gasket (part number 79101600) whenever disassembling the light. Failure to do so may permit
water to leak into the assembly which could cause:
(a) an electrical hazard resulting in death or serious injury to pool users, installers or others due to electrical shock; or,
(b) breakage of the lamp or lens, which could result in serious injury to pool users, installers, bystanders, or in
propertydamage.
3. Toremovelightassembly,removethespecialpilotscrewattopoffacering,removelightassemblyfromniche,
andplace assemblyondeck.
WARNING

housing securely to the mounting ring and wet niche. Failure to use the screw provided could create an electrical hazard
which could result in death or serious injury to pool users, installers or others due to electrical shock.
4. Disassemblelightfixtureandremovebulb.Removeanddiscardoldgasket;seeFigure2.
5. Installnewgasketduringreassemblyoflight,PentairWaterPoolandSpapartnumber79101600.
WARNING

6. Alignthepilotscrewonthefaceringwiththefirst“E”intheword“BEFORE”onthelensface.Thenalignthelens/
faceringassemblytothehousingbyliningupthepilotscrewwiththearrowonthewarninglabel.
7. Secureringtolightfixture.Sealingscrewsmustbetightenedinthefollowingmannertoassureaproperseal;
a. For lights with chrome or brass face ring:
(1) Partlytightenthescrewatthe12o’clockposition,andthenpartlytightenthescrewatthe6o’clockposition.
Partlytighten thescrewatanother‘opposite’position,andthen partlytightenthescrewdirectly across
fromit.
(2) Continuepartlytighteningallscrewsintheabovesequenceuntilallscrewsareevenlyandsecurelytightened.
Recommended20inchpoundstorque.
b.
Forlightswithstainlesssteelfacering:
(1) Withthelightrestingonitsbase,align the face ring, and lens/gasket on top of the light shell as described in
Step6. A NEW LENS GASKET MUST BE USED EACH TIME THE LIGHT IS REASSEMBLED.
Thelockingleversshouldallbehangingfreelydowntoinstalloverthelensandgasket.Beforeinstallingthe
UnitensionClampbesurethatthegapattheendsoftheclampis
approximately1in.apart.PulltheendsoftheUnitensionClamp
pastoneanothertoaccomplishthis.
(2) Withthebentendsofthecircularunitensionclamppointing
downspreadtheclampand placeitinthe“U”recessesofthe
lockinglevers.Besurethebentendsoftheclamparelocated
between the pair of locking levers as shown in Figure 3,
locationA. Checktosee thattheclamp isproperlyengaged
withallofthelevers.
(3) Turnthelightsothatitisnowrestingonitslens.Tightenthebolt
andnut untilthedistance betweentheends oftheclamp equals1/4inch orless;see Figure4.

8. Replacelightassemblyintonicheandtighten
specialpilotscrew.
WARNING

9. Fillpooluntiltheunderwaterlightis
completelysubmergedinwaterbefore
operatingthelightformorethan10seconds.
Turnonmainswitchorcircuitbreaker,as
wellastheswitchwhichoperatesthe
underwaterlightitself,tocheckforproper
operation.

Bolt and nut are to be tightened at approx. 45 degrees
from the pilot screw between the tabs on the face ring
as shown above.
