C. (2) Adjustable Swivel
D. (2) 6.5' Compact LiteStands
E. (2) 45" Silver Umbrellas
Replacing the Lamps
The First Star lamps give approximately 800 hours of use, but a spare is a
good idea. Bulbs can be replaced when cool, the same way a household
bulb is changed. The inner tungsten halogen lamp is protected by a shaer
resistant Pyrex® outer shell, so no worries about the oil in your hands
causing blistering or otherwise damaging the bulb. For replacment bulbs
use the 250 wa bulb (SKU # DP-250B). Other bulbs may be used, as long
as they do not exceed 250 was.
Connecng the FirstStar Lamphead to Your Swivel
1. First loosen the securing knob on the swivel. Figure 2
2. Line up the Swivel with the yoke of the lamphead and slide into center

A quick word about SAFTEY:
The high waage bulbs in the FirstStar will burn hands when they are hot,
so please keep children away from lamps. When you leave the room, be
sure to turn o the lamps. Always disconnect power supply when changing
the lamps.

Installing Your FirstStar Lamp Head
9. Loosen the knob on the receiver of the swivel. Figure 11
10. Slide the receiver on to the top of the LiteStand and re-ghten the knob to
secure the FirstStar onto the LiteStand. Figures 12 and 13
11. Loosen the handle with a turn to adjust the lt of the lamp head, then

Installing Your Umbrellas
13. Smoothly and slowly open the umbrella as you would open any
umbrella unl it clicks into the open posion; as rapid opening could
compromise the life expectancy of the product. Figures 16 and 17
14. Pass the umbrella sha through the hole in the reector and connue
passing the sha through the umbrella hole in the swivel, loosening the
umbrella securing knob if necessary; then ghten at desired posion.
Figure 18
Determining Your Umbrellas Distance from the Lamp Head
15. Plug your First Star lamp head into a standard home power outlet and
switch the lamp on using the switch on the power cord. Figure 19
16. The fully illuminated umbrella becomes your light source, which is what
will illuminate your subject. The larger the light source in relaon to your
subject, the soer the light. For best results, the lamp head should evenly
illuminate the enre umbrella, which will allow for some light spillage
around the edges of the umbrella. This is achieved when the umbrella
sha has about 4 inches showing on the side of the swivel closest to the
subject you are photographing (Figure 20). If you want a lile harsher light
with a more dened shadow at your subject, move the lamp head closer
to the umbrella. Figure 21

Preparing Your Camera for Using the FirstStudio Lighng
The 250 wa bulbs are a tungsten light source rated at 3200 Kelvin. This color will be
closest to the color of standard interior light bulbs. Daylight is a bluer color of light and
should not be mixed with the FirstStudio light, unless you are intenonally using it for
eect. An example of a daylight mixing scenario would be to illuminate your subject
with window light and then use the FirstStudio light posioned behind your subject to
create a warm rim light or a warm hair light (well suited for darker hair)
Other styles of lamps are available in the marketplace, such as compact Fluorescent or
LED. Both of these choices will be closer to daylight , however likely not as much light
output as the tungsten bulbs included in the kit. As long as the waage is 250 or less,
the FirstStudio xture can handle it. (Be sure your alternate lamp ts in the reector
housing, as many opons are too wide around the base.)
1. For the Tungsten lamps included in the kit, set your camera ISO to 3200 Kelvin or
if you do not have a manual seng for that, set your camera to the light bulb
symbol for interior light. If your test shot is too warm on the color scale, move
your white balance down a lile to 3100. If you are using a lm camera, use
tungsten balanced lm.
2. A tripod will allow you to use a slower shuer speed
3. For the soest most aering light, move your umbrella lights as close as
possible to the subject without geng them into the shot.
4. For most portraiture it is best to have the center of the lights a lile above
the subjects head.
